- In this video I show you how I set up the Vonets ASIAIR WiFi Extender so I can use the ASIAIR Pro on my home network.
It took me a while to get this right, so I hope this helps folks get theirs going.

At first I was a little confused as to how to set up vonets ,but then I realized I needed to make the ASIair pro the hosting WiFi network instead of my home WiFi. Thanks for taking the time to show us.
Thanks for the video. I was really struggling with set up. It finally dawned on me that I had to use a separate device to set the Vonets device and type in the IP address to enter the Vonets software to enter the Wizard. The rest was easy thereafter! Just make sure that you use some black tape to hide the LEDs on the Vonets as the yellow green and blue LEDs play havoc with night vision as well as images!

Just had my first try with ASI AIR Pro with
: Vonets VAP11S-5G, ASI 2600MM Pro, ASI 290 micro guider on a Takahashi FSQ106 EDX3. As usual problems occurred... I used my phone and iPad but was not able to get the Vonets applications for either of them. I end up plugging the VAP11S in the ASI AIR RJ45 socket. Changed the ASI air Pro for Vonets in wifi setup. It seems to work... for now...
Hi Dave, good video but I think you have missed the fact that you don't actually need to connect to the home network. I have a TP LInk travel router which I connect to the ASI via an ethernet cable and then I wirelessly connect to the TP Link. This also works in the field as requested by Simon and it can still be accessed indoors at home. If needs be I just run a longer ethernet cable from the ASI to the TP which I can place is indoors and then access it wirelessly using the app. I can't remember which mode and what settings I used on the TP link but these were all explained in the TP Link leaflet when I set it up.
ZWO hadn't got their act together on this problem at the time which is why I got the TP Link. It had been mentioned on one of the Forums. If I was starting from now I would get the Vosnet simply because it runs off 12v whereas my TP Link needs 5v so is more awkward to power in the field, esepcially since ZWO discontinued the old 12v to 5v adapter.
I hope ZWO alter the design in future by addign an inbuilt booster or an external aerial. I think the current problem is caused by the lovely robust metal box that acts as a shield and educes the wifi signal.

If you want to control it from other devices, or computers on the network as I do, then you do need to connect to the network. I haven't tried it away from the house, so cannot comment on using it that way yet.

@@grahamfinch1253 but doesn't that disconnect the device from the home WI-FI network, thus leaving you with no internet access on that device connected to the TP-Link/router.
I thought that was the whole purpose for Station Mode. You can connect the AAP to the home WI-FI network whilst also having your tablet, mobile, etc connected to the home WI-FI network. Thus not losing internet access as is the case with Access Point mode.
@@AB-ft2lb - no idea. I wasn't bothered about internet access, just about better wifi strength for using the ASIAir from indoors or from inside a car.
Hi Dave, great explanations as always. My imagining site is about 120m away, do I have any options for remote access to the AAP, neither home network or AAP extender will make it that far - appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks
Hi Chris. My home network extends into the garden.
So I am able to set up the AAP and it connects OK.
Now I've added the Vonets Router it doesn't jump off quite as often.
I'm looking forward to trying the AAP Pro Plus when I get it.
Thank you for your excellent video. I use the AsiAir Plus and loose WiFi connection from about 20 feet away. Would a longer Asiair antenna on the Asiair Plus help? Also, how does one turn on the 12-volt power ports on the AA+? Mine are not lit, so assume they have no power.

I've never used a longer antenna, but some folks have reported they work.
The Power Output Settings where they can be switched on are found under the first menu where the WiFi and network settings are.
You can set the power ports as a dew heater controller and adjust the power setting.
Good video. I tried the Vonets but gave up as the signal was still poor. I probably done something wrong in the set up 🙄 I just use an ethernet cable from the Air into a BT Home disc in my conservatory. This gives me signal all round the house.
My Vonets connects to a BT disk located closer to the garden, which gives me a fairly good strength signal to the bottom of the garden.
Thanks for that Dave. What do i do though when i'm at a dark site away from home with no wifi. I want to extend the AAP own hotspot to my ipad, so I can go and sit in my car without loosing signal! Thanks

I've not tried it, but could you leave the settings as these are and just connect to the extenders WiFi?
@@DaveEagle-Star-Gazing yes that is what I was hoping to do, when I connect my iPad toAAP in the field, it connects no problem and quickly, but if I move too far away, as you said, I loose connection! Hopefully if I connect an extender to the AAP, I can connect to that!

Use the ASIair pro as the hosting WiFi instead of your home WiFi , it worked for me.
Yes the ASIAir Pro Wifi is terrible with drop out and lost of connection as the telescope rotates shadows the signal. I bought the ZWO ASIAir Vonets extender and its worse and with the flashing disco LED coms it lights up the back yard. Its so bad holding an IPAd or Iphone next to it. I turn my back to walk away a few meters and loses signal. Have been running with 20 meters of Cat 6 ethernet cable (a pain to do each time) to home router and no drop outs and very fast. ZWO just released a new ASIAir Pro with and Aerial (which it always should of had in the first place) and want $500 AU for it to fix what should of worked in the first place! Now using WIndows 10 Pro remote laptop wireless to a 27" iMac on home Wifi. Can run any software (NINA Sharp Cap PHD2 and strong fast Wifi with no drop outs and not locked into ZWO ASIAir ZWO only cameras.
Hi, Thanks for doing this video. Mine seems to be working although with some quirks. I could not leave the Ethernet cable disconnected. I could not connect so I put the Ethernet cable into my laptop then I could login to the extender. OK everything was setup as you said from then on. I connected to my ASIair as you said and it seems to work but I have yet to bring it outside. One thing bothers me. I cannot login to the extender at all now. It shows up on my network but even the password does not work. Is some kind of firewall going on? Is it just proprietary to the ASIair. Can't figure it. I have the same Vonet model as you.
Update. You should mention to connect the phone to the extender and not to the ASI air wifi. Then it will wire connect to ASIair. This was not clear in your video. I did that and it has been connecting better. ZWO has an updated connection blurb here (4 ways): astronomy-imaging-camera.com/asiair/asiair-guide-four-ways-to-connect-the-asiair-pro-to-network-updated.html. It was helpful.
Hi Dave, following your tutorial I've been able to install and use the Vonets wifi extender. Thanks for that. I use PrimeOS on my pc to run AAir but I would like to use LDPlayer on windows so that I can use other application as well. However I'm having problems using LDPlayer with ASIAir. I can do everything else but use Asiair. It won't connect, whatever I do. Could you, please, give me some help? Thanks.
See if you can find the IP address of the ASIAIR on your network once it is connected. Then use that address to connect to it from the ASIAIR app if it can't find and connect to it automatically.

Does the usb cabel on the vinets vbg1200 directly plug into a home routers usb for power, and how does it set up?
I need something that is an actual wifi repeater for outdoor cameras.
This is powered from a 12v positive centre power supply.
I am under the impression that the Vonets WiFi extender is intended for AP (Access Point) mode only, where it is designed to amplify the AAPs WiFi signal strength.
Are you saying it also makes it easier for the home WI-FI network to detect it? As in Station Mode?
Yes, indeed.
@@DaveEagle-Star-Gazing okay, makes sense. The metal casting on the AAP not only dampens it's own WiFi range, but also makes it difficult for it to connect to home networks.
The WiFi extender is essentially bridging the home networks connection and sending it directly into the AAP through the short ethernet cable.
Just hope my WiFi will be able to reach the extender outdoor..
Are you running the Vonets setup wizard on your phone? I can't use ASI Air Plus on any device other than my phone.
The vonets setup is accessed using a Web browser through its IP address. Once you've done that and set the configuration, you should then get everything linked together with the Asiair.
How to use the extender in the field to extend the range of the AAP?
You can set it up the same if you wish, or leave the wireless router at it's default settings.
Connect the Vonets (or another wireless router) to the Network port on the AAP.
Then connect your device to the stronger WiFi from the router.
As long as the APP is connected OK, The ASIAIAR App should then be able to connect to it.
If the app cannot pick the APP up automatically when connected in this way:
Log into the wireless routers config using a Web browser.
You can then find the IP Address the AAP has picked up in the wireless routers network.
You can then type the IP Address in manually in the ASIAIR App to connect.

PLEASE HELP ME! First of all, thank you for being the only person on the planet, who decided to make this tutorial, but I have an issue: I have done everything in my power to get this to work, and while the hot spot is working and extending AAP's range, I can't connect to the extender over home wifi - even cmd ping command doesn't find it in my home network... I don't understand how is this possible, because the extender is obviously connected to my wifi, as I am able to use wifi by connecting to the repeater... I am actually typing this comment on vonets hotspot. I was able to find the new IP of the extender and any request still always times out. Do you have any ideas of what to do?
Have you plugged the router into the AAP via the network port? If the extender is connected to your home WiFi network, the AAP should pick up an IP address. This is the one you'll need to use to connect to the AAP from within the app, once your device is connected back onto your home network.
@@DaveEagle-Star-Gazing thank you for the quick response, but yes, i did successfully get the new IP address of the extender and then tried to connect to the AAP via home network, through the vonets extender with the ethernet cord plugged into the jjrc port (i think that's what you call it at least, the ethernet one anyways). The problem is, that I am unable to pick up the extender and AAP in my network, as if it's hidden in some way, even though home wifi shouldn't be the problem as I was able to find AAP in station mode before I got the extender no problem (It was just a really bad connection, as expected). I will bang my head at the wall, until I get through it and fix the issue, but I was hoping you might have encoutered a simillar problem through your rich experience. Thank you again for helping me find the solution. (edit before posting: the new IP address starts with the same numbers as my home wifi, just the last number is different, proving everything should be connected correctly)
@@DaveEagle-Star-Gazing Hi I've been trying to find the asiair through my network, but then just randomly decided, to check it on my phone app, and forgot to switch from wifi to hotspot on my phone and... it just started working, i don't understand how or why or when, but now it's working (at least on android, I can't quite find it on ldplayer, even though i could connect to it via asiair hotspot (but interestingly not via vonets hotspot). Anyways, turned out I was actually missing one thing you mentioned above so that might have solved it... But at the end of the day, i am just super happy i got it to work. Thank you again for taking the time to first make the tutorial and then also responding to my comment.
Why don’t you connect the Ethernet cable from the Vonets?
You can, and I do!
But if you don't have a long enough cable, or a nearby network port then wireless the most convenient option.
Watched the video and it is great. Thanks for doing this. I have successfully added the Vonets WiFi extender. Now my issue is trying to use the ASIAir App in Bluestacks. I cannot get it to connect. The ASIAir Pro connects perfectly to my ipad, that is connected to my home network. The laptop is also connected to my home WiFi, If I close the app open ASIAIR App in BlueStacks it says no ASIAir found. I hit next the ASIAir Pro shows I click connect and get "Connection Failed please check IP and reconnect. Any thoughts?
Have you tried adding the ASIAIR IP address manually in the app?

@@DaveEagle-Star-Gazing Update, I have been able to successfully connect in bluestacks running teh app, but only if I select the ASIAir_XXXXXX hotspot, which then I don't have internet so I cannot stream the capture. I'm getting close I think. I put what I thought was the IP address 10.0.0.59, but it did not connect.
@@jgcheak you'll need to find the IP address of the ASIAIR on your home network once it is connected to the home network. Usually something like 192.168.***.***. You can get this info from your home router.
Sorry I found this very confusing, especially the bit about "just connect the Vonets Wfi Extender". At the start you had the AAP turned on and the Vonets turned on but the ethernet cable not connected. Then you went to the "Connect the WFI Extender Network to the Home network" etc. A dot point summary at end of the video would have been good, I am none the wiser
I did mean just to connect the network cable from the router into the ASIAIR.

@@DaveEagle-Star-Gazing 1) when you are showing the initial setups around 5:00 mark, were you showing an iPhone or iPad screen ? Or were you in the PC emulator program ( I use Bluestacks ) running ASI Air Pro software ?
2) How did you get into the Vonets setup screen ?
3) ASI owners manual tells you to Turn On the Station Mode - please explain why you advise to Leave Off ?

1) At 5.00 I was accessing the initial ASIAIR settings using the Android Emulator after attaching to the ASIAIR's WiFi directly.
Any screen shots shown from my ASIAIR are from LD Player (An Android emulator similar to BlueStacks).
Shots shown of the router settings are taken from my Web browser.
2) To initially attach to the router, connect your device to the WiFi of the router. Then you put in the IP Address of the router which is shown in the Vonets manual into your Web Browser to open the Vonets settings to change them to mirror your home network.
3) I found that if I put Station Mode on within the ASIAIR, it just did not work properly. I almost ditched the router as useless at one point.
So switching that setting to OFF and then it starting to work really well, surprised me.
Now I have set it up the way I have, I just switch the AAP on now, and once the Vonets is up and running and on the network, the ASIAIR connects and can be accessed from any device on my home network.
If using a new mobile device to run the app, I occasionally have to manually put in the ASIAIR's IP Address within the app, but apart from that, I only had the occasional weak signal drop-outs, but's that because I am out in the bottom of the garden where the home network signal is weak.
I have since put another home network WiFi booster in since setting it all up, but not had a clear, dark night to test it out to see if that helps further.
I hope that clarifies things a bit.
