    Virginia Woolf is my favourite author, I'm so glad you've started reading Mrs. Dalloway! Woolf's writing is very unique on a sentence structure level -- her sentences are often long and meandering, but never feel run-on because the words are so carefully chosen and arranged. Liquid sentences! I've read all her novels, most of her letters, and I'm working my way through her complete journals (I'm on vol 4 of 5).
    Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Mrs. Dalloway! I would recommend picking up To the Lighthouse or Orlando next.

    • @circleofleaves2676
      @circleofleaves2676 2 роки тому +2

      Favourite author here too. I read all her novels 20 years ago, starting with Orlando. Then I read A Room of One's Own (that's an essay, not a novel, for anyone else reading this), then devoured everything else. I now have 32 books on my shelf that are either by her or about her (novels, essays, short stories, diaries, letters, memoir, biographies, bloomsbury stuff etc). Jacob's Room was my favourite for awhile, but I haven't re-read it in a long time. The Waves has always had a special place in my heart; when I moved to the UK for 18 mths (from Australia) it was one of two books I took with me. I plan to re-read all of her novels this year, which will be interesting, because while I've re-read a few of hers, there are some I haven't re-read since my first read through 20 years ago.

I am currently reading; Slow Days, Fast Company by Eve Babitz, The Bookseller's Tale by Martin Latham, Cultish by Amanda Montell, and Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney. I have many more books that I will pick up this month, plus I have Audible, so I can listen to many of them. I have also decided to record what I read this year, which I have never done, despite being a lifelong reader. I discussed it in a blog post of mine, the somewhat narcissism/ego boost of it, and how it makes us fall into a cycle of competition.

    The first of Virginia Woolf's novels that I read was "Jacob's Room" which - coincidentally - was published 100 years ago. I then devoured pretty much everything that she ever wrote with the exception of "The Waves" which I'm ashamed to say I have never been able to finish! I now live about 200 metres from the ocean so perhaps ( though not exactly a beach read!) I should give "The Waves" one more try! (.P.S. Hope you liked the Bookshops Of The World calendar!)

    I love that The Body Keeps the Score is on your list! I've been picking away at it myself. It's a fantastic look into the body's innate tissue memory and the impact of trauma on the subconscious... and it highlights areas of traumatic experiences that are not as recognized in mainstream psychiatric guidelines/understanding. A brilliant read and really enlightening in terms of understanding psychiatric pharmaceuticals and the medical system too. I seriously encourage everyone to read it. The book is full of true stories and accounts of trauma of all kinds (physical and mental), including sexual assault. So take care of yourself if you know you are sensitive or triggered by the subject and go easy! I myself have had to take it very slow (but it's well worth it). Really looking forward to your content this year Emma! 💫💖

    I'm also starting the year with Mrs. Dalloway!! I read To The Lighthouse for uni and it was amazing, so I'm really excited for this one. I'm also in a faust "project", so I'll be reading the many renditions of the myth - from Marlowe to Pessoa.

    Thomas Hardy month: Under the Greenwood Tree; A Pair of Blue Eyes; Far From the Madding Crowd; and (hopefully) The Return of the Native. Of course, I am still deciding on other novels for the rest of the reading month. 💕

    In my gothic lit class during our Frankenstein module, we had to watch a lecture by Anne F. Mellor. In it, she argued that Victor fears female sexuality and that, by trying to appropriate the birth process (in the creation of his monster), he is trying to eliminate the need for women. Your blue tabs reminded me of her argument since your looking at the contrast between Victors creation and nurturing of life and that of the women in the story.

    You should see if The Brain's Way of Healing, by Norman Doidge is something you fancy reading at some point. It's not always brain injuries, but it's about the neuroplasticity of the brain in many different conditions and how we can use that to heal so many brain-related things. It's really accessible and I loved his writing style. :)

    Oooh, I hope you get Spinning Silver soon! I read it last month and LOVED it! Last night I finished the "Shadow and Bone" trilogy - quick YA read, quite imaginative, with great twists - and today started a religious history book I want to finish before I read "S" on your recommendation. Hopefully the library copy has all the inserts, LOL!
    I love to read recreationally but also want it to be edifying, you know what I mean? So I try to intersperse non-fiction in among the fantasy. My recent favorite non-fiction is a WWII memoir called "A Higher Call", about a damaged American bomber that made it back to England because a German fighter escorted it past the Atlantic wall and out to sea. It recounts the soldiers' histories, and how they reconnected 40 years later. It was phenomenal!

    Omg, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who struggles to decide what to read next because there's so many options 😅 I'm currently actively reading One Last Stop, The Poppy War, and The Bloody Chamber, and I have a bookmark in The Priory of the Orange Tree, Love's not Color Blind, and Death Note. I have currently sorted my bookshelves by read, priority tbr and whenever, but that's only the tip of the iceberg because most of my books are on my ereader. And as much as I love my ereader, picking books from there always feels a bit like picking recipes without pictures.

    I think Mrs Dalloway is a good intro to Woolf. It’s the style she’s famous for, but not as difficult as To the Lighthouse or The Waves. Try to read Cunningham’s The Hours too

    I loved Mrs. Dalloway-how it shows that you don’t have to be doing anything grand with your life for it to be meaningful. Or maybe that all the details of everyone’s life are what makes every life grand.

It feels like I'm going on an exciting new journey and I'm getting so so much more out of reading now.
