  • Artist: Queensrÿche
    Album: Empire
    Genre: Heavy Metal
    Year: 1990
    Lyrics:
A child alone in daddy's room
    The gun was hidden here
No one home to catch me when I fall
A young man now in a private chair
I've seen the world through a bitter stare
But my dream is still alive
I'm going to be the best I can
I want to be a busy man
I want to see a change in the future
I'm gonna make the best of what I have
I want to write for a magazine
I'm gonna be the best they've ever seen
I know I'll win if I give it all I can
I won't let go, gotta make the grade
No, I won't let it go
To be the best man, the best man that I can
Back street hoop star you've got it good
You were the wonder of the crumbling neighborhood
Now taking bids on the next six digit plan
Showed me that my will survived
The tragedy that came into my life
giving me hope and the new start
    that I have
I won't let go, gotta make the grade
No, I won't let it go
To be the best man, the best man that I can
Step by step I dream the plan
From my chair to walking man
This constant dream is on my mind
Chase the light I see ahead
    Luminate the path I tread
I live to be the best I can
    Now I'm moving forward
    And I'm never looking back
Straight ahead, focused on the big attack
On a roll and I'm never slowing down
    I won't be torn between
    The man in the chair
And the man that's in my dream
I'm going to melt the two men into one
I won't let go, gotta make the grade I set
No, I won't let it go
    To be the best man,
the best man that I can

Superb album. Queensryche at the top of their career. Saw them headlining on this tour. Magnificent. It was a dream come true for me as a fan to see my favorite band on earth headlining arenas. It meant a lot for me that this band that had integrity and made such great music had some success. They sold out four nights at Long Beach Arena and I saw them three nights in a row. Amazing band!

Wow haven't heard this in a while. Listening now I'm actually getting a lot of late-80s Rush vibes. Some of those synths sound very Power Windows/Hold Your Fire to me. Also hearing some Lifeson-esque guitar arrangements.

    • @Scott-nr2ji
      @Scott-nr2ji 2 роки тому +1

Damn you, fella Rush fan! I remember having older friends of mine saying they hated "Hold Your Fire". It was near the bottom of my list of their (at that time) albums., But I was a big fan of it! Anyway, thank you for your comment, because it reminds me of WHEN Rush and Neil Peart existed together. (Neil is another indisputable perpetuall badass!)

This album in its entirety has quite a few Rush esque moments. Especially this song with the 7/8 part and how the synths play over top the guitars in the chorus reminds me a lot of Signals in particular

I was first introduced to this incredibly underrated album in my middle school years. My father was working selling secondhand items at swap meets during those years. I would help him on weekends. After the workday was over i always looved looking for abandoned items left by sellers. I found a laundry bag full of cassette tapes which included this album. I was a hip hop and R&B fan at the time but after i heard this album i was hooked. It has inspired me to seek out other great Rock and Metal bands. In my oppinion this album has a fine line between Rock and Metal. It was a sort of bridge for me into the journy of Metal music. It must have been incredibly experimental at the time of release yet after so many years i can totally hear elements used by current Metal bands.

You might like these few other bands, on that same premise. They were considered Progressive, and inspired many progressive metal bands. Extreme ( 3 sides to every story ) Smashing pumpkins( melancholy and infinite sadness ), and Dream Theater ( Images and words) all great albums that You can listen through the whole thing. They were inching closer and closer to metal, until Dream theater did become the standard Progressive metal band. They have an endless ammt of musical elements that are beautiful, heavy, experimental, and everything between. Check them out.
