I just finished watching this. As someone that grew up watching 80s & 90 action & horror movie, I had never seen this. But I gave it a watch & it was great! I love how 80s it was, it had a gothic feel
Cant believe i didn't see this until last year. I thought id watched every vampire flick from the 80's. The whole cast was awesome but Bill Paxton killed it in this.RIP
@@MetalMe55iah sheeit i didnt even know about this movie till recently, when i originally made this comment, i must of been out of it or somethin and didnt read it correctly and thouvht he said somethin else
Like Dracula meets Natural Born Killers! This movie does rule! The atmosphere and music in the opening scenes is unlike any other movie. Truly original.
Fascinating, charismatic characters, beautiful visuals, superb acting, music and writing, wonderfully directed by Kathryn Bigelow all combine to make Near Dark (1987) one of the best vampire movies ever made. Enjoy! 😎
Near Dark is 35 today! One of my favorites by Kathryn Bigelow, this was actually her directorial debut Amazing this was Adrian Pasdar pre-Heroes, the father and sister characters are really likable too Love the late Bill Paxton's lovely performance next to Jeannette Goldstein and Lance Henriksen Great mix of western biker and vampire movies with the shots of sunsets, desert plains, and foggy shadowy streets Sadly this bombed at the box office with the studio backing it going out of business and there was no promotional material But I love how it handles these vampires being very subtle and not the obvious in your face kind with sharp fangs red eyes or turning into bats etc being more grounded Quite the poignant family tale too The music was done by Tangerine Dream which is one of my favorite scores, totally reminds me of Witness
Vasquez, Private Hudson, and Bishop star as vampires in a movie by James Cameron's wife. Also stars the guy who got his ass kicked by the T-800 in the biker bar but this time he gets his ass kicked in a bar by vampires.
Jenette Golstein, Bill Patxon and Lance Henriksen were in Aliens and Near Dark. Aliens was directed by James Cameron, Near Dark was directed by Kathryn Bigelow. At the time James Cameron was married to Gale Anne Hurd, producer of Aliens. After their divorce he married Kathryn Bigelow. This movie is like a Cameron family reunion, only missing Arnie, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton and Sigourney Weaver...
One of my favourite films of all time. Love it as much now as I did when it came out. So understated and didn't try too hard, especially considering the subject matter, made it seem more 'real' than it's contemporaries and beautifully dark. Love it.
TCM showed this film last night. I thought what is this huh? But I loved it. I came to youtube to find reviews of it & came across the short documentary of the film with the main cast -that also appears in Aliens. Also includes Adrian Pasdar. . Listening to Bill Paxton really got to me. May he always rest in peace. Lance Heriksen apparently really gets involved in his roles. I never knew that but now I know why I'm such a fan of his. Director Kathryn Bigelow also made the documentary enjoyable. I'm glad I found it.
Very good movie no doubt. I remember watching it when I was 11. I never forgot any of it all these years later like I watched it yesterday. Bill Paxton rocked in this movie. Ya know 3 of the cast here all played in Aliens . I thought that was cool if anyone didn’t know. If you haven’t watched this yet you got to. You won’t regret it. I hope they never do a remake it will never be as good as the original.
Watching this now on shudder must be over 30 years the last time I have seen it the quality still holds up different from your typical vampire movie reason this will always remain a cult classic 😎
This is one of those movies that I absolutely had to own after I first saw it. It took a while to track down, and it wasn't cheap, but I'm glad to have a copy. It's great that it will also be easily accessible on Shudder. It's kind of a perfect movie for those familiar the old World of Darkness games, specifically Vampire: The Masquerade. I believe this movie was actually one of several influences on the game.
I saw this when I was an unattended toddler on Cinemax... wow man... the memories... of my father doing coke in snake skin cowboy boots with matching belt and a led zeppelin t-shirt .... the 80s baby
I like that... And that could work, because although vampirism stops the aging process, in that world it could also make the bearer of the curse appear slightly younger then their age at the time they were turned.
Saw it for the first time tonight. Found a used 2004 DVD for about $7. Quite good, not outstanding or anything, but very good. The massive amount of film grain enhanced the film for me. One of the more stylish films I've seen and one of the much better vampire films. Not as good as Subspecies, which I consider the ultimate vampire movies, but very good and worth a buy.
Rest in Peace Bill Paxton 😢. He has such a modest grave. Weird Science is a great move, but if you want to see a wild role of his, check out Near Dark. It’s from the 80’s & he plays a vampire.
