1:26 I remember that sound from when i was a 6 year old living close to an airbase in Sweden in the 80s. Sometimes they came in for a turn, flying in pairs with slightly different enginerevs which made a very certain phasing sound in the air and it was just amazing for a young aviationentusiast. The sound of a Dragon 🎵🎶 Thanks for sharing! 😊
Draken was build as a high speed interceptor with a decent amount of offensive weapons. Fast gain altitude, attack the target and then return to base. As a domestic, engineering project in Sweden, I think they came up with an excellent high speed interceptor. Draken can perform the famous Cobra maneuver. Thanks for the upload!
Saab had some german speaking Aero engineers (klopf) helping out with the ground breaking design plus getting the very best British engine there was (legend has it SAAB got the very best RR jet engine after winning a game of snookers! vs the British defense officials.).
remember these powerfull birds on any summer hollidays visiting our Swedish relatives in Askersund in the early sixties. What wonderfull times back then.
Got to love the small tail wheels .... Swedish practicallity :-) I saw this plane and the viggen when I was in Sweden in 1990 (IACE). Best voyage ever.
Turning money into noise with the loud lever on 'full loud'. Wonderful. Great filming and a truly wonderful aircraft. Still so clear to see the lineage in all the Swedish fighters; Viggen, Draken, and the Gripen. All great aircraft.
In the nordic mythology, and also others, the DRAKEN (Dragon) is standing for enormous Power, Destruction and Might. This flying weapon, the SAAB 35 is showing it perfect - until today... really a Dragon ! LIKE and Thank You , PaddyPatrone !!!
If they rolled that out of a hangar for the first time this year it would frighten the fighter community! It still has the coolest look of almost any fighter ever designed (IMHO). Almost spacecraft-like.
Seing those scramble usually meant broken windows on my grandparents farm. Impressive to say the least. They look alien even compared to modern fighters.
Of-course! But we need a modern engine. The RM6 / Rolls Royce Avon is no longer in production, and a modern engine will have a much better fuel economy. As you said, we need to replace all electronics, including avionics, handling of contemporary weapons, a completely new radar of modern standard, new defensive countermeasures, highly integrated communications and information sharing with other units of the Swedish (and now NATO) armed forces. Next we should modify it to be able to perform all mission types previously done by separate aircraft models: Interception (Swedish "Jakt", attack ("Attack") and surveillance ("Spaning"). Finally (?) we would like to modify it to be extremely maneuverable, maybe even make it an instable plane using computer controlled canard wings to keep it in a stable state. With all that we might as well give it a new name. Since Swedish airforce planes have had their names prefixed with letter(s) denoting its role/mission , and since this modified J35 now can do three mission types I would suggest "JAS". 😊
And the swedish pilots invented the Cobra maneuver in that plane........many 5th or 6th generation figther are having problems doing that, Draken was like made for it
The Swedish Air Force Historic Flight maintains and operates a number of vintage Saab aircraft: One J29, one J32, one J35, one SK35 (two-seater Draken), and two Saab 37 (one AJ37 and one SK37). They're frequently seen at airshows around Europe. Pretty soon, I'm guessing they'll add Saab 105 to the line-up, it's in the process of being retired from service (mid-2024).
way back in 1962 I was at the signal corps NCO school. We cadets were pressganged into being monitors, seat allocators etc. for some airshow. I happedned to be standing next to the russian Air attache (easy to see who he was with a chest full of medals etc), two Drakens flew by right side up, and with like the flick of a switch they flew upside down. the attache saw it too, and lost his jaw. an improvement on the "Immelmann turn"
It's hard to believe the Draken first flew back in 1955 because even now in 2022 it's a sleek, beautiful, futuristic-looking fighter jet.
True
Damned, they were loud! With an afterburner loud as hell!
Just a 18 years old boy was wandering how old plane Draken really was.
Really? You must love Ho 229.
@@teleman07 I do, actually.
Yes, only 10 years after the II World War!!
Definitely one of the coolest Cold War Era designs.

Still got it after all these years, that's what you call a proper airshow display, beats all this new stuff.
The last climb on afterburner, before landing, was awesome!
one of the Loudest planes I have heard
Swedish technology: understated and rockin'!

Einer der schönsten und beeindruckendsten Jets für mich 😎 Ich hoffe die kommen auch zur Airpower wieder👍

Had no idea it was that agile! Gotta love turbo jets, afterburners and the smell of their exhaust.
Finnish AF had them too.
They were LOUD!
I am pretty sure what we saw here is nowhere near it's limits. As far as I can find it was capable of a sustainde 9G in turns.

Godhet nådig. 🤓 What an intimidating aircraft for 1955. The Draken must’ve given the Soviets pause if they had any thought of invading Sweden.

First aircraft to perform the cobra maneuver
Whats so spectacular about it really?? its turnrate is slow as a snail, same with the rest, it does a few slow turns, thats it, boring as heck.
clearly you have no idea what the draken is capable of, also this thing was made in the 1950s, so pushing its airframe is just asking for trouble

Slow as a snail yet the first aircraft to do one of the most aggressive maneuvers in history?
