September 16 commemorates the day Malaysia was born 61 years ago when Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah) and Sarawak joined together to form Malaysia as what it is known today. More significantly, this is a day to celebrate the love for the nation and appreciate the unique mix of culture amongst its people from different races and religions.

Unfortunately, some less educated Indonesians, to this date, still believe that the formation of Malaysia (Malaya + Sabah & Sarawak in the northern Borneo) was a neo-colonialist agenda initiated by USA & Great Britain. The 1st. Indon Pres. Sukarno was very mad when 2 northern Borneo regions joining Malaysia out of the internationally recognized referendum organized by the United Nations. Luckily many open minded Indonesians can move on.

It is the perfect tourist destination, but not as many people visit. I like it that way though! It keeps it's roots and is much less touristy than other countries I have visited in SEA!
