Lang wrote this to celebrate the installation of the tuba stop in the chapel organ at Christ's Hospital. I knew a gentleman who was a student there at the time, and remembered how proud Lang was of the new stop!
I remember when I discovered this piece back in the 70s, I was maybe 11 or 12, I thought it was the best thing ever. LOL. And I still thinks it's rather charming, been playing it for, christ, over 40 years now!
Hi - I have only just recently bought the score and wonder if you can help. On the phrase starting at !:01 in this video the last chord before the repeat is printed as A D# and F# over a D pedal. I don't really know what to play here but a D# note and D pedal is not a good sound? Thanks very much
Oh my, Johnathan Scott at Centenary UMC in Lexington, KY would be the epitome recital of this. No negativity intended to this recording. Centenary UMC has an absolutely wonderful tuba; and I've been wishing for Johnathan Scott to come to Kentucky for a long time. Did I mention, CUMC also has a brilliant Trumpet en Chamade? Cause it does. Honestly; there are half a dozen brilliant reeds in Lexington; but the tuba at CUMC gives me chills every time.

For those wondering, this is using a Trompette en Chamade, and appears to be played on an Italian organ, probably the one pictured here: ua-cam.com/video/hI9yChTZMOk/v-deo.html

Yes! This is totally a'=390 Hz, so 2 semitones below the normal a'=440 Hz --> A d sound's like a c. ;) My guess is, that this was recorded in the Church of St. Maxmin de la sainte Baume in France. The organ there sounds really similar to that recording! ;)
Tra le varie esecuzioni ascoltate per me questa è la migliore , anche come timbro dell'organo, la tuba è fantastica
Beautiful!!
Happy and pleasant composition!
Magnificent piece. and beautifully performed 😊
Magnifica esecuzione , eccezionale il timbro della tromba
Really enjoyed listening and following the music. Well played, thanks for sharing.
waaaa it's sooo goooood and beautiful 🥰🥰

John Mitchell - that tuba stop has certainly woken a number of pupils after a long sermon!
John - here’s a recording from CH of Lang’s hail gladdening light with the tuba stop being front and centre!

@@DJW147 That is a misprint, it is a D major chord, D, F#, A.

I don't think this is at concert pitch. It sounds like it's in C Major, not D Major.
so what? maybe too pipes in DMajor were out of tune . . .
Alternate tuning!
