I used to be a security officer and what I find annoying is when people complain about someone doing something that they don't like. Like okay, you're not king of the world. If they aren't causing a big scene or hurting themselves or anyone I'll let it go. Some people just need to grow up. Some security officers need to stand up for themselves.

It wasn't a shoot, and we didn't get kicked out but once a bunch of friends and I went to a mall in cosplay just to hang out in cosplay because the con season was over for the year and we wanted to cosplay together more. It was in November and we were walking along when this old lady sneered at us "It's CHRISTMAS, not Halloween!" we tried to ignore her but she kept harassing our choice to go out in public dressed as characters. Normally we got asked if we were in a play or something, but this lady was so rude about it and made us afraid she'd call security on us and all we were doing was shopping in cosplay. Our cosplays weren't even the "out there" ones. mostly modern day human characters.

Pro tip: if the mall or place you want to cosplay at has a website or phone number, just some way to contact them, do give them a heads up if you plan going there, just in case they have any rules such as no photography or no cosplays/costumes allowed in general, to avoid awkward combination with people that own the place or work there.

I saw a guy dressed as Joker from Persona 5 while Christmas shopping. I really wanted to compliment him, but he was power walking, so I got the feeling that moment wasn’t a good time to bring more attention to him.
Aw, cheez, I just had an idea for a P5 photo shoot set in a mall as a cognitive Palace. Guess I’d better get to work on my gender bent Joker.

I think this happened last year in the early summer. We went to a con that was connected to the mall and we were working as featured cosplayers at the time at this con. It was around 2ish and I was getting extremely hungry but I had already scouted out the mall with a couple friends to see where we could eat when my dad finally got off. I was in full Karkat including grey body paint, contacts, and horns and my friends were cosplaying characters from voltron and we had talked to security about where the best food areas were in the mall. They were really nice to us since I guess they understood that there was a con going on in the next hall so it was fine that we were in there getting food plus I had cosplayed at that mall before in the past when I was with a different group of friends for a friend’s birthday party. When my dad got off, he was starving so I walked with him into the mall since he couldn’t see well because he was in a bunch of latex prosthetics and the contacts he was wearing weren’t his prescription so he couldn’t see at all. We sat down at this little sushi bar right near the doors to the con and we got our food ordered when a security guard came up to my dad and told him he had to leave. I explained that we were working at the convention that was just 15 feet away from where we were I told him that that nobody stopped me when I came in an hour beforehand. The guy then said that the only way I was allowed in the mall is if I took off my makeup and contacts (which I needed to be able to see) and if my dad took off the prosthetics which were tightly secured onto his face. My dad was not happy about this and explained that we were working at the con so there was no way we could do that and the guard started reaching for my dad’s face to take the latex off of him which could’ve caused burns or the whole thing to fall apart. I pushed my dad back since he couldn’t really tell what was happening and we were kicked out before getting our food. We then told the people running the con and that guard wasn’t allowed to work that area of the mall for the rest of that day and we finally got our food.

One weekend in my early days of cosplay, I was walking with my friends outside our high school after shooting some poses of my Ishida Uryuu, and we were going to another street to get more shots. For context, I had a big, very stylized longbow that's about 5 feet tall (and no arrows).
A very terrified person must have called the cops, because a police car came rolling up and stopped in front of us. The police dude, who had this amused look on his face, told us that there was a report of someone wielding a "crossbow" in the area, asked to see our ID and then sent us on our merry way.
Was I the one with the mistakenly identified "crossbow"? Or was that something else completely? We can't know for sure, but it sure makes for a silly story. :P

I've not had it happen for Cosplay, but I was stopped when taking photos in a shopping centre for first year college photography. It was a little awkward since the goal of the shoot was using LEGO minifigures with real world objects and places and taking pictures, so I had to scramble to get these tiny LEGO figures in a bath product shop

The malls where I live (near New York) actually have a rule that unless you’re a very small child on Halloween you’re not allowed to wear bright colored wigs or things that can be construed as costumes. I actually had two younger classmates who got actually thrown out of the mall closest to where we live because they went to the mall dressed as Vocaloid characters. I have severe social anxiety so I don’t tend to do stuff like that 😅 But I did do an on location shoot at a park... And we were asked by park security to move since there were three wedding parties trying to do photos lol

(Surprisingly) we've never been kicked out of the mall for a shoot (but a con kicked us out for being in the hallway :)) but we DID have a man try take pictures of us "sneakily" and when we called him out he was like: "oh, this is just a BIGGG pop culture thing, I can't not take pictures" and the lady who worked at Hot Topic warned us because in past years a group of Homestuck cosplayers was caught shoplifting and buying sex toys underage and all the employees around from that time still hate the "kids in wigs"

Intresting fact, at the mall near my house, going as a Girl Guides Unit all wearing the same Guides shirt makes you a GANG, and warrants being escorted out by two security guards.
And even though we were mainly there for a scavenger hunt, it wasn't like we didn't buy anything. I had a bag with manga in it myself, and a couple girls had gotten some Tim Horton's as well.

Malls where I live are super open for people taking photos, especially since we have a lot of outdoor/open-air malls. Disney loves to film here too haha!! There was one time we did have security talk to us, but it was mostly because we were a pretty large group of cosplayers, and the majority were kinda loud. We didn't get kicked out, just told to be respectful of the other shoppers, which we respected.

Not really a “traumatic cosplay experience”, but one time I was cosplaying Miku with a friend who was dressed as Rin, who was live streaming from her phone on Instagram. When we walked by the food court, I guess this one table with 5 or 6 people sitting at it noticed us, and just started belting out “World is Mine” 😆 It took 2 minutes for other vocaloid fans in the food court to sing along (remember, my friend was in the middle of live streaming 🤣). It was fun and awkward at the same time 😂

I remember a couple of years ago I was attending a convention in London with a group of friends. The place we were staying was a couple of miles from the convention centre which involved us having to go through Canary Wharf. At the time we were there security was high as the terror threat was still high so I'd decided to go as the Joker as that involved not having to take any props. One of my friends went in his Destiny cosplay which he had a gun 3D printed for. As we were walking through Canary Wharf we noticed that security was following us. It turns out my friend had not thought to cover his gun up and security continued to follow us until we were well clear of the area.

I remember my first cosplay excursion outside of our usual venue. Our usual venue was pretty chill about cosplayers hanging out--even though we were Homestuck cosplayers, and many were in full grey--and some shops would even give us discounts if they couldn't guess our character.
However, this venue was used for more official events, so we once had to change to a different place. And we were treated like criminals. None of us were grey because we knew this part of town was more conservative, but we were still constantly trailed in every store we went in. We'd touch something and the employee would usually make a noise or glare violently at us. We even got kicked out _after_ one of my friends said she was thinking about buying a certain shirt for an upcoming cosplay!

About 9 years ago I was cosplaying as Belle in her yellow gown. I had to pick up something at the mall and meet up with a friend who was also going to the convention. I had my convention pass in my bag so that my name wasn't hanging around my neck. I had no problems getting to the store to pick up the one item and meeting my friend but as I was trying to leave the mall to head to the convention. I was stopped by a kid for a picture. I wasn't going to say no. Then another and before I knew it I had a crowd of parents with their kids wanting photos. Now people were still able to move around in the hall as it's a huge hall. At this point my friend had my bag and security had approached my friend saying we weren't allowed to be there. My friend explained what had happened and the male security guard was okay with it cause I in no way endangering anyone but the female security guard had an issue with it. She had the crowd disperse and I was escorted out of the mall with my friend. To this day we still believe she may have been jealous of not getting a picture. We also never saw that security guard again.

I used to sit inside the doors of a mall in the winter time while I was waiting for my bus in the morning in the winter ( I live in Edmonton so it’s freezing) and one day a guard came in and started screaming at me and telling me that if I didn’t leave he’d have to BAN me from the mall and when I froze from panic he literally said if I didn’t move he’d have to restrain me and throw me out, I was so freaked I couldn’t move so he grabbed me and put my arms behind my back and shoved me out of the mall, he banned me and yelled at me that I was a little delinquent and I was going nowhere in life. I WAS 13. I should’ve called the real police on that guy

This summer I had such a weird encounter with two security guards ;A; It was August, hot as hell and me and my bf where at this con wich was right next to a beautiful park. Sooo since the summer sun pretty much killed everyone, most of the cosplayers stayed next to this huuuuge ass fountain dipping their feet in. We even saw some cosplayers take action and shoot some cute pics in the water. Me and my bf think " oh that is such a great idea let's shoot some cosplay pics in the water".
I take off my shoes walk in the fountain and we start shooting. Suddenly I hear someone yelling at us. Two security guards walked up to us screaming at us to get out the fountain immediatly!!! I'm already dead at this point but I try to be nice asking what's the matter. Apparently one is not allowed to go into the fountain ? We disclaimed that we are sorry and we never saw a sign saying so. The security guard gets rly angry yelling even louder if we are dumb and cannot read ( for real there was no sign ;A; ). I try to deescalate and just say "Oh I'm so sorry it won't happen again. Have a nice day !" Well security guy did not want to have a nice day shouting at me again if he should call the police on me and my disrespectful manner. Well after some discussion they let go of us but I was so shocked - why are some ppl like this ? :c (At least I still got some very cute pics :'D )

I was at a cosplay meet years ago and we were hanging out in this big shopping centre, and because we were a big group, maybe a dozen of us or so, we had security come up to us and tell us we couldn't walk around together 🙃 I absolutely understand as I'm sure they got groups of bad teenagers causing them trouble, heck we experienced two later that day, but yeah we had to like.. split into smaller groups? 😂

My fiancé (then boyfriend) and I go to Sequoia National Park nearly every summer. A few years back I decided to bring my Attack on Titan cosplay to take pics. We decided on a small grove of giant Sequoias that were close to a road, I was hoping no one would be there but there was. There weren’t many people, maybe 10 tops. I got some the looks I and it made me feel kinda awkward. But I got good pics and no one said anything but the awkwardness was real.

My group got kicked out of the mall when we were having a meetup. Thing was, he completely lied about the situation. The parents of one the attendees called the security office to ask questions and he said we were running up to people and bothering them, they knew it wasn't true as she wouldn't do that. I was an adult and called and issued a compliant about it as did some others. The guard did face discipline and the mall said we could come back but the leader of the meetup group was hesitant to set up a meetup there again.

My town has three malls. One never has cosplayers, the small one used to be the place for meetups and no one would care that we were there and then there was the big mall. Younger cosplayers (a lot of them were homestuck, OCs or FNAF) would like run arround obnoxiously and get in trouble so every one like hates on the cosplayers at that mall. which sucks because thats the prime place to go hang out in cosplay

I live in a small rural town in England so imagine a quaint town with lots of cool places to take photos but there’s this massive, ridiculous posh, high end furniture shop just outside of the town centre (we’re talking everything costs thousands of pounds). For some reason we though it would be a good idea to go in there in cosplay (there was about 10 of us) so we go in one weekend, get some stupid photos of us just messing around and leave but the next weekend we go in again and this worker comes up to us and has a go at us for being in there and it was so awkward. I still don’t know why we thought it was a good idea but oh well.

However it doesn’t mean HARASS THE PRINCESSES. Mallrat douche teenagers tend to do this, or to any cosplayers period.
My local mall security... they said; ‘then why do they dress like that if they don’t want attention? We can’t stop people going up to them.’

My brother and I went to a restaurant while in cosplay at a convention and the employees ended up getting in trouble with how excited they got. The shop hasn't been open during the convention since. :( :side note, they weren't anime fans until my brother and I explained what was going on.

Back in junior high years i cosplayed Tavros with 2 other friends who were Nepeta and Dave from Homestuck at the mall and after quite a while of us just walking around (we didn't go to take photos just walk around) this little like 3ft nothing security guard approached us and said one, to me to take off my horns cause apparently they would get in the way, which granted could be a concern even though we stayed away from a majority of people and i was sure to watch where i was going or turn my head so as not to hit anyone, and to my Dave friend, to take off her sunglasses?? in case they needed to identify her?? which was like really? there's probably plenty of people wearing sunglasses. And after that identification comment, the only thought that entered my mind was "If you really had to identify US wouldn't it be easier to do if we are dressed like this." How hard would it be to spot orange horns and fake hair in a mall. Not to mention this lady had a tone to her voice that was like, Im not putting up with this today just get out. So our mall is basically against dressing any different than what they deem as "normal".

I went to the mall dressed as Anna from Frozen the other day, because it was right after a convention, and it was a big mall in the area that my friend had never gone to and that her friends were wanting to go to as well, and so I was like "Yeah, sure, i'll do that". Um, I forgot it was the holiday season, honestly, and because this is such a big mall and it's holiday time it got SUPER busy. Like there's hundreds, if not a good thousand amount of people in this mall, and I'm running around as Anna. Amazingly, no one told me I couldn't? I didn't get kicked out, which I thought was wild, and everyone was super nice to me while I was dressed up. I stayed clear of the Disney Store though, because I knew that could be a big no-no and didn't want people to think I was affiliated with them (especially because the people I were with... swore a lot around me) but over all?? It was a really good time! Im actually a part of a party princess company, so when I had a ton of kids sworm up to me I know how to deal with them, so I think it was just a good time for everyone involved. c: but I got free soap out of it and I had a good time so totally worth it!

Venelope was my first real cosplay, actually only finished it in september, and me and my friends tend to go places in costume together cuz its alot of fun, and once we decided to go bowling in cosplay. When planning it we got paranoid that the bowling alley would kick us out and most of us we all too akward to ask, but then my friend, my mom friend (she was cosplaying alice angel), the only one who wasn't too scared to ask called and very confused bowling alley employees said yes and later that night a group of costumed children showed up and it was great. Im too nervouz to ask my friends ro help me get good pictures though lol. Maybe eventually we'll all team up and get pictures for eachother since we all are starting off cosplaying n need help from eachother lol.

That reminds me of a time when i wanted to do a photoshoot in the mall with my friend but my sister who was my ticket to because of her best friend who was my crush that time who i wasnt allowed to hang out with without her hated my costume, it was shiemi from blue exorcist, and did an ultimatum that shes not going if i wore it then my parents who were judgmental about cosplaying forbade me to the point they gave me an alternative to do it at home but said i cant post it on facebook which was so fucking annoying since my time to cosplay was about to expire already due to them judging it where i havent gotten to cosplay with a partner and have a photoshoot. That time i was beyond pissed because not only were my plans ruined because of my sister who is overly sensitive to outfits she hates that i cant wear it around her but i never had the chance to maximize my cosplay experience before i was forced to quit
Seeing this video makes me get why my parents were against me cosplaying in the mall because it wont be proper if there is no event though their main concern was if i was seen by my relatives or cousins who are judgmental of cosplaying
