For other little details about Bishaten, and its connection to the various aspects of Tengu from their cultural amalgamation and connection to religion, Bishaten has a few little animation flares that offer even more hints to its inspirations. When it is about to transition to standing on its tail, it first bows its head and clasps its hands in front of and above itself - putting itself in a position reminiscent of prayer. This also ties neatly to the next point, as, in this pose, Bishaten's arms cover its ears, but the rest of the face is visible. Now, this isn't much in itself, however, it has two other moves of note that go along with this. When it slams a Flash-Fruit into the ground to stun hunters, it has to cover its eyes with its fore-limbs to not blind itself as well, and, finally, when it smashes a Poison-Fruit down to break it open, it has to cover its own mouth to not inhale the toxic fumes. So, it covers its ears, eyes, and mouth in highly specific and intentional ways, and it is a primate-like creature, so... See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Most people are familiar with the saying, and its connection to monkeys, and this comes from East Asian tradition, especially Japanese where the Three Wise Monkeys have names that are simultaneously negative conjugations of the verbs of seeing, hearing, and speaking, but also use the modified form of the word for monkey (Mizaru, Kikazaru, Iwazaru). The principle of the Three Wise Monkeys, and even depictions of them, are common in Japan, and can often be found at shrines and other places of worship as a reminder to the followers of such core tenets of proper behavior.

There's also how the Bishaten Horn+ description says that it's often used as a monk's hat and that longer horns mean slyer Bishaten, and I'm guessing you'd have to be pretty sly to fool a religious devout into following a highway to hell. Plus, it's constant spinning could reference the whirlwinds that tengu can whip up. Plus, the way Bishaten greedily eats those Jumbofruits reflects how Tengu-dou promotes pride and self-indulgence for power (it starts eating the second one before even finishing the first one).

@@empoleonmaster6709 It does exist, but it's rarely seen for obvious reasons. Although, while Bishaten is on its hindlegs tossing fruit around, its forelimbs almost look like it's surrendering, or rather, doing nothing.

Judging how there are Aztec-inspired pyramids in the Flooded Forest (one of the Bishaten’s habitats), and how it has that hand-tail-thingy, Bishaten might also be a reference to the Ahuizotl from Aztec mythology, a creature prominent for the hand at the end of its tail which is “similar to a monkey’s”.

Is there any connection between Tengu and the Chozo from Metroid?
I ask because the Chozo are monk like bird people who were at one time the most powerful force in the galaxy who train Samus and supply her with powerful weaponry, but are also directly responsible for almost every galactic threat in the series, and when it's not them, it's the Space Pirates who are trying to reverse engineer their tech.

@@thecorruptedgamer7032 I'm gonna guess before WW2. The Japanese Monkey vs Crab story and the Korean Old Woman vs Tiger story parallels were probably made during the Imjin War from 1592 to 1598 where Toyotomi Hideyoshi was effectively called a monkey, Yi Sun-shin had a turtle motif (not necessarily crabs but they do have a similar way of defending) and the Japanese invaders were often compared to tigers to the Koreans who are also often compared to old women.

Oh...well considering the update coming this summer is bringing back one of the big hermit crab monsters I hope they have a unique Turf War with Bishaten as another reference to The Battle of Crab and Monkey. Also I noticed that in one of the pictures for that battle, timestamp of 4:44 (oof to monkey) it wasn't a Usu for mochi that was dropped on Monkey to break his back but a Quern, you can see the handle used for spinning the top half and it was in two halves over monkey's back. This was used for hand milling grain..actually in Japanese the name for a millstone, mortar, or quern is "Sekiusu"..so it IS a type of Usu dropped on monkey in that picture..just not the big mortar kind for making mochi.

It is possible, not long ago their Twitter posted "We're working hard on finishing the monsters in Sunbreak", which had a crude picture attached... which is very similar to the picture used to tease the Bishaten, though in this case, the long nosed mask is red with brown hair and a brown fan, which seems to indicate that Sunbreak will also have a subspecies of Bishaten

I'd like to add that, apparently (according to Wikipedia, at least) Sarutahiko Ōkami, leader of the earthly kami, is said to be the "original model" of Konoha-Tengu. And his name, 猿田彦大神, literally means "monkey-field prince great god". Unfortunately, there's no citation assigned to the whole "Konoha-Tengu were based off of Sarutahiko" thing, so I can't ascertain its accuracy. But it does seem to imply that there is at least _some_ connection between tengu, monkeys and birds, however loose that connection might be.

This monster also reminds me of Ahuizotl of Aztec Myth. Which is basically a demon dog with a hand on the end of its tail. While most of its depictions do picture it as a dog, another common depiction is a monkey, but this is very surface level since, the Ahuizotl is a water dweling creature, not an avian.

I forgot about the take of crab and monkey- but I’m glad I nailed most of them- and that tie to Bishamonten is more so in their armor then in any physical characteristic- interestingly they parallel more so the more benevolent images of Tengu and the overal nobility of Bishamonten- one part that intrigued me is that Bishamonten/Vaiśravaṇa is the ruler of the Yaskas, who are nature spirits like Tengu- yet Bishamonten is explicitly is against the self indulgence that Tengu are known for
Heard a fun fact: Bishaten is based on a wolf monkey- which may be a subtle reference to how the first Tengu were originally heavenly dogs who chased comets- or were comets

  • @MisterDragon

There is one other reference in the Bishaten which is extremely obvious if you're familiar with South American mythology.
The Ahuizotl. A beast with a hand on its tail. Coincidentally the Bishaten is most commonly encountered on the Flooded Forest map which happens to contain several ziggurats that mimic the design of cultures from that part of the world.
Not to mention it's coloration resembling that of more tropical birds found in those jungles.

The two animals that live prominently on many mountains said to be home to Tengu are hawks and macaques. Then there is Sarutahiko, the Tengu kami who protected the crossroads to Izumo when Susanoo left the Sacred Realm to seek out the kami of the land. A video covering the early boss Arzuros would be really cool. I think there is definitely some inspiration from the Onikuma and Ao Bozu

If Bishaten gets a turf war with Shogun Ceanataur(or Daimyo Hermitaur if it also returns), we'll know now it's a nod to that story lol.

I'd love to see an analysis of the bosses from Toukiden Kiwami. I know that most are normal youkai but I feel like it would still be interesting to watch.

10:18 - GG, you just answered a twenty five year-old question I had from when I first watched _Tenchi Muyo!_ When Tenchi was fighting Kagato, he did some kind of transformation and there were these pom-poms on his outfit and that just completely perplexed me. I don't know *why* that stuck with me, but it's been a headscratcher since I was about twelve years old.
So I think you just drive-by *Culture Shocked* me on another anime entirely while talking about a video game.

Combining a tengu and monkey in Monster Hunter Rise is brilliant. Because in Rise, the player has a dog companion, harkening back to the Japanese tale of a dog fighting a monkey that was terrorizing a village, allowing for players own gameplay to reference the tale, fighting a saru-tengu with an inu to protect villagers. Since the dog in that tale was brought by a Buddhist monk, Rises saru-tengu being hunted with a dog companion further references the conflict between Buddhist monks and tengu. Also, if monkeys are seen as more bestial primates than humans, it makes sense a monster based on a ko tengu, a bird-man, would be a bird-monkey instead.
