Witold Urbanowicz one of the best polish pilot ( was showed in this film ) said one famouse sentence " We are not begging for freedom, we are fighting for freedom ". This forced them to fight on the Western Front, i.e. in defense of countries such as Great Britain, the Battle of Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, France or the capture of Monte Cassino in Italy. As you can see, our grandparents fought to weaken the Germans in any way. However, they contributed more to saving Western countries than their own country. After the war, they were not even in the procession celebrating the victory over Germany. This is how the British paid us back. Moreover, even though they worked in England, they were no longer welcome there. This is how they repaid them, so this story gives a lesson for us Poles. Don't trust anyone, don't trust any alliances. Here the Poles made a mistake, but they had no choice. Britain continues to see secret files relating to Poland in World War II. There's probably a lot to learn there. Now we know that Great Britain knew before us about the secret Molotov-Rubentrop Pact, i.e. the division of Poland between Germany and the USSR. However, they wanted Poland to fight and gained as much time as possible to prepare for a German attack on Great Britain.
And as we know, Great Britain and France had an alliance with Poland. They were supposed to help and enter and fight the Germans. This help never came even though they declared war on Germany.

Warto też pamiętać, że po wojnie rząd Wielkiej Brytanii za użyczenie Polakom paliwa, samolotów i lotnisk kazał sobie zapłacić złotem, które wywieźliśmy we wrześniu 1939 roku z Warszawy. Żeby przelać Polską krew w obronie Anglii musieliśmy angolom zapłacić polskim złotem. Razem 107 650 000 funtów.

Hello! Dywizjon 303 to tylko fragment. Polacy mieli też Dywizjony 302, 306, 307, 308, 309, 315, 316, 317, 318, 663 i Dywizjony bombowe - 300, 301, 304, 305. Latali do końca wojny w bitwach nad Europą, Afryką Północną, Atlantykiem. Wojska lądowe walczyły od pierwszego, do ostatniego dnia II Wojny - Polska, Norwegia, Francja, Afryka Północna, Włochy, Belgia, Holandia. 1 i 2 Armia Polska walczyła też od wschodu, składała się głównie z tysięcy więźniów Stalina wypuszczonych z obozów, drogę bojową zakończyli bitwą o Berlin. (!) Do tego w wojnie na Atlantyku uczestniczyły polskie okręty, które w 1939 przepłynęły do UK. Jeden z nich, "Błyskawica" jest dziś okrętem muzeum i stoi w polskim porcie Gdynia. / W 1943 zasłynął też w Afryce Polish Fighting Team "Cyrk Skalskiego". Mając 15 pilotów i 10 samolotów zestrzelili 28 samolotów, 9 uszkodzili. Bez strat własnych. Pozdrawiam! :)
Facinating story. I've never seen this before. I've had the priviledge to work with Polish people over many years in the UK, and in my opinon they are a great bunch of people. It would appear that they were sadly sold out by the power sharing politics following WW2. Not something you necessarily want to hear as a Brit, but you can't turn back the clock. Thanks Starr. 👍

So what? Do you believe wars are paid for by charity and cost nothing? Do you stupidly expect OTHER PEOPLE (i.e the UK taxpayer) to pay for the Polish part of the war effort to topple the murderous nazi regime and remove its evil from POLISH SOIL? Polish "honour" meant that when it was graciously allowed to set up its exiled government in London in June 1940 it signed various agreements with the British government, one of which was to pay for all the goods and services it received from Britain, the exiled Polish government preferring to be an "independent national force" rather than a ragged bunch of itinerant mercenaries. For its own part, Britain had by 1942 handed ALL 1,400 TONS of its OWN pre-war gold reserve over to the US government to pay for the arms and equipment it was using to continue the fight against the conquerors of YOUR country. Once all that gold had been spent, we then handed over ALL of our own cutting edge British scientific research to the US as well as global basing rights on empire territory to the US armed forces, and then when all that had been accounted for, we ran the British part of the war effort and indeed our whole UK economy on US Loans. Not "GIFTS"... but "LOANS" that needed repaying. We only finished repaying the tens of BILLIONS of pounds worth of debt to the US in 2006. As a result of this unforeseen ruinous expenditure we could no longer afford to maintain our own empire, which hastened the collapse of both the British Empire & the entire UK economy after WW2. By the end of WW2 Great Britain had been transformed from the world's richest nation in 1900 to the world's largest debtor in 1945. What you also will have utterly no awareness of is that the majority of Polish war debt was written off by the UK as it was clear that there was no way that the postwar Polish communist regime were ever going to pay the rest of it back. And then clueless commenters like yourself complain about having to pay a pittance for YOUR part in freeing YOUR country from nazi death camps & tyranny. You should have let us know in 1939 that you were going to beat the nazis alone, then we could have left you to it, and saved ourselves all our OWN gold reserve, 460,000 British lives and our empire. I am Polish, so I know this story, I read the book "303 Squadron" at school. Despite this, it was worth spending almost an hour to see this story through your eyes. Your natural and true emotions made a huge impression on me. The fact that you are not Polish and yet you experience it in such a way as if you were, deserves admiration and recognition. You are a very sensitive and empathetic person, which is why your story is true, sincere and moving, bringing the viewer to tears. What you do, bringing information about Poland to English-speaking viewers in a very emotional way, deserves respect and recognition. I have not read all the comments under this film and I do not know if it has already been explained. Poles were not invited to the great victory parade in London because in Yalta the Allies established the division of influence that would be after the war and Poland, like other countries in this part of the world, found itself under the influence, or rather occupation, of the USSR. At that time, the Poles began to demand that the USSR admit to the murder of thousands of Polish officers in Katyn. The English did not want to irritate their ally Stalin. Despite the fact that the Polish Armed Forces in the West numbered 200,000 soldiers who had shed blood on various battlefields, they were not invited. The only exception was made for the 303rd Squadron. The pilots, in solidarity with other Polish soldiers, refused to take part in the parade. You are doing a great job. Thank you. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
With regard to the non-appearance of Polish forces during the London "1946 Victory parade" the problem lay SQUARELY with POLAND. The first invites sent out by the UK Labour Govt of Clement Attlee to ALL the nations who had fought for the Allied cause during WW2 (INCLUDING Poland, USSR & Yugoslavia) were sent out weeks in advance of the parade. The Polish invite in particular was quite understandably delivered to the Polish "Provisional Government of National Unity" ( the "TRJN" or Tymczasowy Rząd Jedności Narodowej) based in Warsaw, which was the OFFICIAL Polish govt as recognised by the international community in the form of the "United Nations", and NOT just by Britain alone. The TRJN was the same govt that it was intended the London based Polish nationalist Govt in exile would become an intrinsic part of, as agreed to by ALL sides at the Yalta conference in Feb 1945.... (although the soviets subsequently saw to it that this never actually happened). This invite sent directly to Warsaw immediately raised a storm of protest from the Polish nationalist govt in exile based in London who, with some justification, felt they had been sidelined in the matter, their anger was supported by many British MPs, senior ranks within the UK armed forces & members of the British public. With only days left before the parade was due to take place, and with no reply or even acknowledgement of the British invite from the OFFICIAL Polish TRJN govt in Warsaw, the British govt then hurriedly & belatedly sent out a SECOND INVITE to the Polish Govt in Exile in London, (as well as directly to many individual Polish service personnel), but as one united group they CHOSE to ignore the British invite to register their anger and disgust at being treated as "second fiddle" to the Warsaw govt. And the final Ignominy? The Warsaw TRJN govt never did answer or even acknowledge the original invite from the UK (as neither did the USSR or Yugoslavia) and never attended the parade either. As you can see the Polish "non appearance" was solely down to a poisonous bitter mix of POLISH political hatred (from Warsaw) and hubris (from the London Poles), and NOTHING to do with this imaginary "Poles weren't invited to the parade" nonsense. As I've described above the Polish nation was actually the ONLY allied nation to receive TWO invites to the parade. Now please go and burn the communist schoolbooks your country was forced to read between 1945 and 1990.

The Polish government in Warsaw was invited (the same government on whose orders the pilots returning from the West to Poland after the war were murdered. The government, a thug in the hands of Stalin, whose troops occupied Poland, and you are surprised that Polish soldiers in the West considered this a slap in the face and did not want to take part in the parade. Yes, England betrayed us twice during WWII. Betrayal was one thing, but what they did next was even worse. After the war, England billed Poland for the destroyed planes on which Polish pilots flew, for spare parts for these planes and for fuel for them. This is not the end of how England treated us, but the beginning, just one of hundreds of examples of how England behaved towards Poland and Poles.

We were Lucky in Lincolnshire. Many Polish Airmen and other Soldiers stayed. Because they had Nothing to go home to. They Put backbone into our Area many had integratory and Honour. I was lucky to have many Polish friends. The fact is without Polish Airmen Britian would have Fallen.
@@newton18311 I know plenty.....the pilots of 303 squadron were creditied with 57.5 of the close to 2000 luftwaffe aircraft losses during the battle of Britain. The UK was NEVER under ANY threat of invasion while the world's largest navy (The RN) existed. It was Britain ALONE who saved the Poles.

You need to read a bit of history, it was as much the french that betrayed the Poles after ww2 no surprise really, Chuchill was trying to use French airfields to figure out ways of actually engaging the Russians to force them out of Poland but the good old french wouldn't allow the UK to use french airspace if war broke out with Russia. So the plans was abandoned so Poland got left to the USSR. Britain alone couldn't take on Russia even less so with france not allowing troops or planes to be based in france for fear of reprisal from the Russians. Its no suprise really. But you most defiantly cant hold your heads high on what amounted to france solely betraying poland. Britain didn't jump straight to war because they could see france folding like a PIEACE OF PAPER at the start of Germanys invasion of Poland and france what the hell you expecting of Britain. There are a lot of Polish people living in the UK, my schools Art teacher was Polish, inspiring. There was a refugee camp, where they lived, the locals supported them. Now we have supermarkets with Polish food sections. I wish I knew how to thank them in their own lannguage (Google translate didn't exist then). The film "The Battle of Britain" has a cameo of Polish Pilots. The knew what the Nazi invasion really meant, they wanted to get up there and fight, for Poland. A neighbour who recently died, joined the RAF at 16, by saying he was older. Life expectancy for a pilot was a few weeks, how did he manage to survive? All but one of his squadron were killed. These were mainly young men. Yalta was a betrayal, it seems to be kept quiet.

I przydałoby się gdybyś doczytał, że Brytyjczycy też dostali rachunek że Stanów Zjednoczonych za używanie ich sprzętu. A UK z kolei wystawiło rachunek za sprzęt i amunicję nie tylko Polakom, ale i Francuzom, Grekom czy Włochom. To się nazywa polityka i interesy i tak to działa. Niemcy też uzbrajali w Panzerfausty, sprzęt przeciwlotniczy, czołgi czy samoloty Rumunów, Węgrów czy Finów nie za darmo, a za grube miliony. Za darmo to można co najwyżej w ryj dostać. I to głupie myślenie pokutuje u polskich polityków do dziś. Oddawali wszystko Ukrainie a potem wielkie zdziwienie, jak Ukraińcy podali Polskę do sądu za blokowanie zboża 😂 Tak wygląda polityka! Druga sprawa, że Polaków na paradę zaproszono. Wystosowano zaproszenie do uznawanego oficjalnie przez Aliantów rządu polskiego w Warszawie. Rząd ludowy w Polsce odmówił, żeby się przypodobać Stalinowi. Więc zaproszenie ponowiono do polskich sił w Wielkiej Brytanii. Oni odmówili, bo poczuli się urażeni że rząd UK najpierw zaprosił komunistów z Warszawy. Na koniec Brytyjczycy wystosowali zaproszenie dla pilotów polskich walczących w bitwie o Anglię. Ci w ramach solidarności z resztą sił zbrojnych na uchodźstwie też odmówili. Wskutek czego Polski na paradzie nie było. Trzecia sprawa, napisałeś że Niemcy wypowiedzieli wojnę Anglii w 1940 roku. Ciekawe, bo już w 1939 Niemcy i Brytyjczycy stoczyli bitwę morską u ujścia River Plate, a niemieckie U-Booty zaczęły zatapiać brytyjskie statki na Atlantyku. To tak sobie dla jaj walczyli? A dopiero w 1940 wypowiedzieli? Otóż nie - Niemcy nie wypowiedzieli wojny ani Francji ani UK. Zresztą nawet ZSRR zaatakowali bez formalnego wypowiedzenia wojny.

On 1st September 1939 Hitler invaded Poland. Britain and France gave him 48 hours to withdraw his forces. He failed to do so. On 3rd September 1939 Britain and France declared war on Germany. Apparently there was dancing in the streets of Warsaw when the Poles heard the news of the British and French support. That month the British succeeded in penning the German 'pocket battleship' Graf Spee into Montevideo harbour, and her captain sank her. On 14th October 1939 a German U-boat sneaked into Scapa Flow harbour in Orkney and sank HMS Royal Oak. Britain's army crossed the Channel to try to help the defence of France, but were kicked back into the sea in 1940 and France surrendered. Much of France then collaborated with the Nazis. The Royal Navy was forced to sink the French fleet, out of fear it would fall into Nazi hands. So there was no betrayal on Britain's behalf. The British Army was no match for the Wehrmacht. The RAF was tiny in comparison with the Luftwaffe. And even the German capital ships were better than ours, though we had more of them. So Britain launched into a war, in support of Poland, despite being completely unready for it and half-expecting to lose it. At the end of the war there was no way on earth that the western allies could have kicked Stalin's Red Army out of Poland. It would have been World War Three, fought on Polish soil, with the result that none of us might ever have been born. Britain ceased to pay its war debts for World War Two in about 2006, so don't ever think you're the only ones with a hard-luck story.

There was also an American squadron flying for the British Air Force. A good old movie to watch is The Battle of Britain which includes The Polish pilots.
The Eagle Squadron did NOT take part in the battle of Britain, as it only became operational in Feb 1941. The NINE US pilots who did take part, did so as gallant individuals, and against the wishes of their neutral government, who during the battle of Britain were happily supplying BOTH sides of the European conflict.

Wing Commander Witold Urbanowicz died in 1996, in New York. He lived long enough to visit a free Poland, where he was welcomed as he deserved, like a hero. He was also promoted to general. His son said, his father was the happiest man in the world when he returned from his trips to Poland. So this story has a happy ending.
Yes, we learned about the Polish, especially in our Air Force. They were so darned angry at the Germans they wouldn't be held back. I know some stayed in England as when I was first married, my landlord (married to an English girl) was our Landlord. More recently, 60+ years after the war I +my daughter, were holding a motorbike a friend wanted to sell. The person who applied to purchase it was Polish. He turned up, happy, friendly and the deal was done. He later texted my daughter to query if I was really her mother - 'because she (me) was gorgeous'. My daughter laughed as I had been a war baby and this sale/meeting was back about 4 years ago. No wonder I'm all for the Polish people who are, even still, proud and strong! Those who chose to stay or, later came to live here, are welcome indeed.

Any documentary film on the subject of war is extremely important, because it shows what a senselessness and what a great evil every war is without exception. During World War II, young healthy people, instead of living, died to defend their countries, families, homes. Innocent people, civilians, children died horrible and cruel deaths - shootings, starvation, concentration camps, torture, rape, experiments. We must always remember that no war is justified, cannot be justified. The conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, the conflicts in Africa, the Russian onslaught on Ukraine, the war in Syria - all these things should not happen after the experience of World War II. Yet we still fight, kill, destroy and hate each other. I am from Poland, I watch with trepidation what is happening in the world, I look to the future with fear.

We can only live in harmony, but we can never forget or forgive. We know the stories of waxen grandfathers, soldiers who, when Poland was already conquered, wanted to continue fighting for their country. This forced them to fight on the Western Front, i.e. in defense of countries such as Great Britain, the Battle of Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, France or the capture of Monte Cassino in Italy. As you can see, our grandparents fought to weaken the Germans in any way. However, they contributed more to saving Western countries than their own country. After the war, they were not even in the procession celebrating the victory over Germany. This is how the British paid us back. Moreover, even though they worked in England, they were no longer welcome there. This is how they repaid them, so this story gives a lesson for us Poles. Don't trust anyone, don't trust any alliances. Here the Poles made a mistake, but they had no choice. Britain continues to see secret files relating to Poland in World War II. There's probably a lot to learn there. Now we know that Great Britain knew before us about the secret Molotov-Rubentrop Pact, i.e. the division of Poland between Germany and the USSR. However, they wanted Poland to fight and gained as much time as possible to prepare for a German attack on Great Britain.
And as we know, Great Britain and France had an alliance with Poland. They were supposed to help and enter and fight the Germans. This help never came even though they declared war on Germany.

Polski dywizjon 303 był najlepszy wśród wszystkich walczących w tej bitwie. Warto też pamiętać, że po wojnie rząd Wielkiej Brytanii za użyczenie Polakom paliwa, samolotów i lotnisk kazał sobie zapłacić złotem, które wywieźliśmy we wrześniu 1939 roku z Warszawy. Żeby przelać Polską krew w obronie Anglii musieliśmy angolom zapłacić polskim złotem. Razem 107 650 000 funtów.
To nieprawda. Korzystaliśmy ze sprzętu na zasadzie pożyczenia. Od złota jakie było w Wielkiej Brytanii odliczono jedynie za utrzymanie cywilów. Resztę zwrócono rządowi PRL. To co Ty napisałeś komunistyczna propaganda rozprzestrzeniała z sobie wiadomych powodów.

Hello! Dywizjon 303 to tylko fragment. Polacy mieli też Dywizjony 302, 306, 307, 308, 309, 315, 316, 317, 318, 663 i Dywizjony bombowe - 300, 301, 304, 305. Latali do końca wojny w bitwach nad Europą, Afryką Północną, Atlantykiem. Wojska lądowe walczyły od pierwszego, do ostatniego dnia II Wojny - Polska, Norwegia, Francja, Afryka Północna, Włochy, Belgia, Holandia. 1 i 2 Armia Polska walczyła też od wschodu, składała się głównie z tysięcy więźniów Stalina wypuszczonych z obozów, drogę bojową zakończyli bitwą o Berlin. (!) Do tego w wojnie na Atlantyku uczestniczyły polskie okręty, które w 1939 przepłynęły do UK. Jeden z nich, "Błyskawica" jest dziś okrętem muzeum i stoi w polskim porcie Gdynia. / W 1943 zasłynął też w Afryce Polish Fighting Team "Cyrk Skalskiego". Mając 15 pilotów i 10 samolotów zestrzelili 28 samolotów, 9 uszkodzili. Bez strat własnych. Pozdrawiam! :)
Facinating story. I've never seen this before. I've had the priviledge to work with Polish people over many years in the UK, and in my opinon they are a great bunch of people. It would appear that they were sadly sold out by the power sharing politics following WW2. Not something you necessarily want to hear as a Brit, but you can't turn back the clock. Thanks Starr. 👍

Seeing as you like "fun facts" here are a few more for you to enjoy....
Polish "honour" meant that when it was graciously allowed to set up its exiled government in London in June 1940 it signed various agreements with the British government, one of which was to pay for all the goods and services it received from Britain, the exiled Polish government preferring to be an "independent national force" rather than a ragged bunch of itinerant mercenaries.
For its own part, Britain had by 1942 handed ALL 1,400 TONS of its OWN pre-war gold reserve over to the US government to pay for the arms and equipment it was using to continue the fight against the conquerors of YOUR country. Once all that gold had been spent, we then handed over ALL of our own cutting edge British scientific research to the US as well as global basing rights on empire territory to the US armed forces, and then when all that had been accounted for, we ran the British part of the war effort and indeed our whole UK economy on US Loans. Not "GIFTS"... but "LOANS" that needed repaying. We only finished repaying the tens of BILLIONS of pounds worth of debt to the US in 2006.
As a result of this unforeseen ruinous expenditure we could no longer afford to maintain our own empire, which hastened the collapse of both the British Empire & the entire UK economy after WW2. By the end of WW2 Great Britain had been transformed from the world's richest nation in 1900 to the world's largest debtor in 1945.
What you also will have utterly no awareness of is that the majority of Polish war debt was written off by the UK as it was clear that there was no way that the postwar Polish communist regime were ever going to pay the rest of it back.
And then clueless commenters like yourself complain about having to pay a pittance for YOUR part in freeing YOUR country from nazi death camps & tyranny.
You should have let us know in 1939 that you were going to beat the nazis alone, then we could have left you to it, and saved ourselves all our OWN gold reserve, 460,000 British lives and our empire.
Now please go and burn the communist schoolbooks your country was forced to "learn" from between 1945 and 1990.

I am Polish, so I know this story, I read the book "303 Squadron" at school. Despite this, it was worth spending almost an hour to see this story through your eyes. Your natural and true emotions made a huge impression on me. The fact that you are not Polish and yet you experience it in such a way as if you were, deserves admiration and recognition. You are a very sensitive and empathetic person, which is why your story is true, sincere and moving, bringing the viewer to tears. What you do, bringing information about Poland to English-speaking viewers in a very emotional way, deserves respect and recognition. I have not read all the comments under this film and I do not know if it has already been explained. Poles were not invited to the great victory parade in London because in Yalta the Allies established the division of influence that would be after the war and Poland, like other countries in this part of the world, found itself under the influence, or rather occupation, of the USSR. At that time, the Poles began to demand that the USSR admit to the murder of thousands of Polish officers in Katyn. The English did not want to irritate their ally Stalin. Despite the fact that the Polish Armed Forces in the West numbered 200,000 soldiers who had shed blood on various battlefields, they were not invited. The only exception was made for the 303rd Squadron. The pilots, in solidarity with other Polish soldiers, refused to take part in the parade.

With regard to the non-appearance of Polish forces during the London "1946 Victory parade" the problem lay SQUARELY with POLAND. The first invites sent out by the UK Labour Govt of Clement Attlee to ALL the nations who had fought for the Allied cause during WW2 (INCLUDING Poland, USSR & Yugoslavia) were sent out weeks in advance of the parade. The Polish invite in particular was quite understandably delivered to the Polish "Provisional Government of National Unity" ( the "TRJN" or Tymczasowy Rząd Jedności Narodowej) based in Warsaw, which was the OFFICIAL Polish govt as recognised by the international community in the form of the "United Nations", and NOT just by Britain alone. The TRJN was the same govt that it was intended the London based Polish nationalist Govt in exile would become an intrinsic part of, as agreed to by ALL sides at the Yalta conference in Feb 1945.... (although the soviets subsequently saw to it that this never actually happened).
This invite sent directly to Warsaw immediately raised a storm of protest from the Polish nationalist govt in exile based in London who, with some justification, felt they had been sidelined in the matter, their anger was supported by many British MPs, senior ranks within the UK armed forces & members of the British public.
With only days left before the parade was due to take place, and with no reply or even acknowledgement of the British invite from the OFFICIAL Polish TRJN govt in Warsaw, the British govt then hurriedly & belatedly sent out a SECOND INVITE to the Polish Govt in Exile in London, (as well as directly to many individual Polish service personnel), but as one united group they CHOSE to ignore the British invite to register their anger and disgust at being treated as "second fiddle" to the Warsaw govt.
And the final Ignominy? The Warsaw TRJN govt never did answer or even acknowledge the original invite from the UK (as neither did the USSR or Yugoslavia) and never attended the parade either.
As you can see the Polish "non appearance" was solely down to a poisonous bitter mix of POLISH political hatred (from Warsaw) and hubris (from the London Poles), and NOTHING to do with this imaginary "Poles weren't invited to the parade" nonsense. As I've described above the Polish nation was actually the ONLY allied nation to receive TWO invites to the parade.
Now please go and burn the communist schoolbooks your country was forced to read between 1945 and 1990.

The Polish government in Warsaw was invited (the same government on whose orders the pilots returning from the West to Poland after the war were murdered. I invite you to the Powąski cemetery, you will see their graves there). The government, a thug in the hands of Stalin, whose troops occupied Poland, and you are surprised that Polish soldiers in the West considered this a slap in the face and did not want to take part in the parade.
I will not enter into further polemics with you on this topic, not because I lack arguments but because this is not the place for such discussions. I invite you to the discussion on websites dealing with the history of Poland.

@@marekLuk66 I'm glad you've changed your viewpoint ad agree that as I stated above the Polish armed forces WERE invited to the 1946 London Victory parade and that the FIRST British invite was quite correctly sent to the OFFICIAL Polish govt in Warsaw. The fact that that Polish govt turned out to not take the form that had been decided on at Yalta was NOT a fault of the British.
If you re-read my first post you will see I CLEARLY stated that the London Polish Govt in exile were JUSTIFIED in feeling a sense of discourtesy at how the invite was handled by the British govt, but that Clement Attlee's govt had been strictly correct in what they did, although the spirit of how it was handled was slightly off the mark.
I'm glad that you do not seek to inflame our exchange because that is also my own hope. I actually admire the Polish nation and its people for their proud national spirit, but I also feel the same about the WW2 British people, it is just that I HATE the misinformation that is now posted by largely ignorant modern day Poles in comments sections. Yes, England betrayed us twice during WWII. Betrayal was one thing, but what they did next was even worse. After the war, England billed Poland for the destroyed planes on which Polish pilots flew, for spare parts for these planes and for fuel for them. This is not the end of how England treated us, but the beginning, just one of hundreds of examples of how England behaved towards Poland and Poles.

We were Lucky in Lincolnshire. Many Polish Airmen and other Soldiers stayed. Because they had Nothing to go home to. They Put backbone into our Area many had integratory and Honour. I was lucky to have many Polish friends. The fact is without Polish Airmen Britian would have Fallen.

Apparently there was dancing in the streets of Warsaw when the Poles heard the news of the British and French support. That month the British succeeded in penning the German 'pocket battleship' Graf Spee into Montevideo harbour, and her captain sank her. On 14th October 1939 a German U-boat sneaked into Scapa Flow harbour in Orkney and sank HMS Royal Oak. Britain's army crossed the Channel to try to help the defence of France, but were kicked back into the sea in 1940 and France surrendered. Much of France then collaborated with the Nazis. The Royal Navy was forced to sink the French fleet, out of fear it would fall into Nazi hands. So there was no betrayal on Britain's behalf. The British Army was no match for the Wehrmacht. The RAF was tiny in comparison with the Luftwaffe. And even the German capital ships were better than ours, though we had more of them. So Britain launched into a war, in support of Poland, despite being completely unready for it and half-expecting to lose it.
At the end of the war there was no way on earth that the western allies could have kicked Stalin's Red Army out of Poland. It would have been World War Three, fought on Polish soil, with the result that none of us might ever have been born.
Britain ceased to pay its war debts for World War Two in about 2006, so don't ever think you're the only ones with a hard-luck story.

You need to read a bit of history, it was as much the french that betrayed the Poles after ww2 no surprise really, Chuchill was trying to use French airfields to figure out ways of actually engaging the Russians to force them out of Poland but the good old french wouldn't allow the UK to use french airspace if war broke out with Russia. So the plans was abandoned so Poland got left to the USSR. Britain alone couldn't take on Russia even less so with france not allowing troops or planes to be based in france for fear of reprisal from the Russians. Its no suprise really. Polish pilots were flying biplanes and inter war planes in Poland and were at a huge disadvantage against german up to day planes. But when Poles got to fly in modern for their time planes they showed their experience and killed a score of jerries. Then in England they have shown their wrath in hurricane's.

There is a wonderful book about 303 Squadron written by American writers Lynne Olson and Stanley Cloud entitled "A Question of Honor: The Kosciuszko Squadron: Forgotten Heroes of World War II".

Dry your uninformed crocodile tears and read how In 1947 the UK passed the "1947 Polish Resettlement Act". It was the act of UK parliament that granted FULL UK citizenship and residency rights to over 250,000 Polish ex service personnel AND their families. Britain was the FIRST allied nation to pass such legislation, followed by the French in 1948 and finally the USA was shamed into doing likewise in 1949. NO Polish service personnel were forcible returned to Poland post WW2. A small number CHOSE to return (after all they weren't prisoners of the UK) but in most cases those who did lived (and sometimes died) regretting that choice.

There was also an American squadron flying for the British Air Force. A good old movie to watch is The Battle of Britain which includes The Polish pilots.
The Eagle Squadron did NOT take part in the battle of Britain, as it only became operational in Feb 1941. The NINE US pilots who did take part, did so as gallant individuals, and against the wishes of their neutral government, who during the battle of Britain were happily supplying BOTH sides of the European conflict.

I've got the video of 303 Squadron and I often watch it. I've got nothing but admiration for the Polish pilots and we owe them a huge debt of thanks. These are men that I call true heroes!! It's disgusting that the government bowed down to Stalin and wouldn't let them march in the victory parade.

Wing Commander Witold Urbanowicz died in 1996, in New York. He lived long enough to visit a free Poland, where he was welcomed as he deserved, like a hero. He was also promoted to general.

Yes, we learned about the Polish, especially in our Air Force. They were so darned angry at the Germans they wouldn't be held back. I know some stayed in England as when I was first married, my landlord (married to an English girl) was our Landlord. More recently, 60+ years after the war I +my daughter, were holding a motorbike a friend wanted to sell. The person who applied to purchase it was Polish. He turned up, happy, friendly and the deal was done. He later texted my daughter to query if I was really her mother - 'because she (me) was gorgeous'. My daughter laughed as I had been a war baby and this sale/meeting was back about 4 years ago. No wonder I'm all for the Polish people who are, even still, proud and strong! Those who chose to stay or, later came to live here, are welcome indeed.

Any documentary film on the subject of war is extremely important, because it shows what a senselessness and what a great evil every war is without exception. During World War II, young healthy people, instead of living, died to defend their countries, families, homes. Innocent people, civilians, children died horrible and cruel deaths - shootings, starvation, concentration camps, torture, rape, experiments. We must always remember that no war is justified, cannot be justified. The conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, the conflicts in Africa, the Russian onslaught on Ukraine, the war in Syria - all these things should not happen after the experience of World War II. Yet we still fight, kill, destroy and hate each other. I am from Poland, I watch with trepidation what is happening in the world, I look to the future with fear.
