- This is a long one. I decided to make a full video from start to finish of how my workflow has changed since the latest update to the SP 404 MKII. Hope you get something out of this and enjoy the video.

I have experience with making beats, but I am totally new to this device. Your tutorial structure & clear explaining is PERFECT. Roland should pay you for this as I totally wasted my time watching their sh for 1.5 hours. 😂. Big up to you man!

Not sure if someone has mentioned this yet, but when you are trying to set the start and end point of a sample, you can use shift+knob to zoom in to the start or end point without having to manipulate the point first. It's a lot less tedious. Works well when the knobs are set to catch mode also.

This is an excellent tutorial. So many of the other tutorials out there assume you're a long time SP404 user and don't explain the 'big picture, this is how the interface works' stuff. I have one of these on order and I've learned bits of how to do things elsewhere, but this video has given me the complete 'big picture' of how the interface is organized. By far the best tutorial on this thing I have watched. You're a good teacher.

This was a really great tutorial, got right into the meat and no long intros and vocalizing like a lot of UA-camrs. YT is an exercise in bypassing BS they jam into videos before saying anything real, so it’s nice to see it here laid out so logically, with respect to the listener

@SPITLOGIC - I am going to have to try and decode your easter egg desk flair. With all due respect, I want to discover the meanings behind your "desk flair." The Ragnar sticker reflects his love of the outdoors, hiking, adventure and exercise. The Freedom 4 Miler medal is again, his love of the outdoors, people and exercise, but most importantly, his love of America and freedoms and being a patriot. The small toy bear head. It appears to have stuffing coming out of the top of it's head. It also appears to have some age. I think this is a personal memento of some significant meaning from earlier in his life. And having it, holding it, seeing it, gives him a sense of warmth and happiness. Could be from someone who was very important to him. I have to say, I'm impressed. Most producers use very generic desk flair, a small plant, a small 3D printed miniature nick·nack of a groove box, drum machine, etc. No, not Spitlogic. He Instead used items that had meaning and inspiration for him. Care and thought was given. If i could afford a personal lesson from him on how to use my SP404 MK2 that I am still too scared to use out of the fear of failure and abandoning using the hardware probably forever, I would hire him for an hour or two just to be personally trained by him. It wouldn't just be a lesson but very inspirational to me personally as well.

Roland should put you on their paylist....best tutorial by far. Whiched I found you in February. Should have saved lots of frustration. That shift Pattern Select for automatic resampling is a major miss by me, thanx, you're the first one to bring this to my attention. Cool. Deep.
One part I do differently is BPM, though. What I always do is check the original BPM of my input material (in the Tempo window right bottom, small yet significant). I either do that by using the integrating (thanx Roland, that's how it's done) tap button, or I use my DJ system (Traktor), or the SP 404 (not as reliable as Traktor) to find it out. But however I find it, it's important to enter it in the damned right down section of the Tempo window. Since both key and tempo depend on it. If you just chop up a single sample your good without it, but if you combine samples from different source material, you need this common ground. Lets say you wanna combine a 78 bpm sample, with a 93 bpm drumloop. If you dont have the propper BPM (original BPM that is, set) you can't rely on the derived BPM setting. So if you set them both to 73 BPM, the 73 BPM from the sample will not be the same BPM as the 73 BPM from the drumloop, allthough they indicate both that they are running at 73 BPM. Same goes with any sampler (garbage in, garbage out).
That is a real good point. I use multiple samples at times and I struggle with matching different BOMs on a single song. It's extra work that could have been avoided if I did the work up front.

As a side note, when you mentioned the MKII count in wait sometime picks up the recording and sometimes doesnt...you can change the trigger sensitivity in shift + pad 13 -->System-->"Auto Trig level"

@@spitlogic A tutorial how to sequencing external devices would be cool as well, i just switched from Korg electribe 2s to Roland SP404 mk2, just now starting to feel its power, but sequencing i think is so so against Electribe, but as a sampler it's dope!
@@vaaksvakuums I've done some work with DAWs with the MK2 and am looking to acquire some gear to use with the SP 404. In the future I will likely go over it. Time and opportunity will tell. There are some synths and cord generators that I am considering.

The more features they implement - the more obvious it becomes that they need to make a big brother SP with improved UI making things more logical. I fear the clunky workflow will frustrate the hell out of me, but I still kinda want it.

just a quick question, if i wanna export to an sd a pattern that i played in pattern mute mode, how can i do that? or the mode is made only for jamming?
When I record the pattern in resample mode it records the pattern in mute mode. For some reason, the transfer of patterns to sample only does it in its original form. You'd have to resample to record the changes.
I'd like to find a way to produce patterns based on quintuplets or septuplets. Do you see any way of doing it? (resampling and looping 5 or 7 1/16 length parts of a pattern maybe?). Not sure I understand the different levels of BPM inside the machine, is it possible to loop "odd" length of a pattern?
Yes. During the record mode before you make your pattern you can hold the shift key and 2nd knob to change the time signature and the knob can change the length. I don't vary my time patterns much, but I was thinking about making a video about that.

@@mago1980 yes. It was pretty intimidating when i first got mine. It's still a lot i feel I don't know about it. At least this video gives the basics.
It's taking awhile for me to figure out the 404. I never touched the older models. I'm used to simple on-the-grid sequencers. I played with trackers in the late '90s, and I'm comfortable with regular 16, 32, or 64-step step sequencers. All the 404 videos I see are just going through features without showing a useful workflow for actually doing anything.
I mostly DJ. The things people really like about the 404 seem really bad to me. People love the effects, but I swear it doesn't even have a decent delay (but then I guess I'm used to using a Polymoon and Zen Delay). And the filters are super sketch low-bitrate digital-sounding filters.
The SP-404MKII is super interesting, though. It's too complicated and too simple at the same time. The DJ mode is awful! You can't define any hot cue loops. And mixing two tracks is super clumsy, like Roland has no idea what DJs do. Simply EQ-ing out the bass on one track or filtering it out with a HPF is not a smooth process. You need to constantly switch busses and reassign busses to the channels/samples! It's ridiculous that I can't just have a separate EQ (or HPF) for the left channel and right channel at the same time while I'm mixing.
This video seemed kinda slow and dumbed-down at first, but ... I think that's what I needed. Now I've watched it twice and decided it's the best tutorial available on the 404. It's actually helped me grasp the workflow. You're awesome. You're a great communicator! But maybe we're just on the same wavelength. I can understand what you're saying. But I'm a really technical introvert nerd and I'm definitely on the spectrum. I'm a software developer and a DJ and I've run 13 marathons and 20+ half marathons. And I have a Fenix 5. I totally see one on your wrist in the video!
It's funny. I can't stand groove boxes. They have no personality. But the 404 is kinda like a groove box that actually interests me. It's amazing as far as high-level track building! Nothing is even close!

I'm very happy to know this helped. I actually have been considering splitting the video up into more bite size for people who want specifics on use of the 404. With that said, there were some things you wrote that stood out to me. We do seem to have some things in common. For one, I have not touched DJ mode on the SP 404. I have zero desire for it since I use turntables myself. I hear good and bad things about it, but I'll stick with what I love.
I am a half marathon runner. I actually have a goal of doing a half in every state (I've done 14 states so far). I've only done one marathon. Not sure if I would ever use the amount of time it takes to train up for one to do it again, but never say never.
The SP 404 is my best investment in a while. I love it. For the price and size it has a lot of power. For someone like yourself who uses real effects I can understand how it may come up short to you. Me, on the other hand, have only used a few effects boxes in my life so my frame of reference is limited to DAWs in the effects department. I hope you find some new and interesting creations in your journey of using the SP404. I certainly have.
