  • A Whoa Deere moment. What could be wrong with this Transmission/Self-Propelled unit on this Free John Deere with the optional blue painters tape. Took off the Belt Cover, the Rear Wheels, all looks good started it with the cover off to see what is moving. Belt is driving the transmission pulley and not slipping, shafts are turning but opposite directions when holding the rear up is that correct? Something oh Deere is just not right here? See Part I for the first look of this free John Deere Craigslist find:

Hey good point Lakeslake79 thanks. I got the JD Manual with this and the service section shows lubricating those drive shaft hub bushings, light grease on the axles and those drive gears. Also how to adjustment the clutch spring & transmission cables. Going to do all that service next. Sure none of that has ever been done, seems everything is working just watching it with the belt cover off. Hey I liked your Cold starts particular the Snapper!

I know any tractor ive seen has the wheels turning oppisite directions as you mentioned, and so does my self propelled snapper push mower. If im not mistaken, only one wheel on your mower should turn at a time.

forgot to mention that the wheels should 'take turns' as to which one is driven

The noise you hear is the pulley rubbing on the spring. Notice the shinny metal on the spring. It will eventually wear more and snapped in two. Please don't ask me how I know. Someone sells an after market kit for about $150 (new tranny, pulley, and belt). JD does not sell this kit, nor do they accept responsibility on this design flaw. Kit should last another 20-25 years if parts are as well made as the JD originals. I bought another spring/line assembly for $25 from JD. Can't find a replacement pulley so may try JB Welding the pulley. Better yet, if I can find a proper size bushing at Ace Hardware I may try and bore out the pulley to accept an oil lite bushing, if possible?

One thing I did was there was just enough depth after removing the eclip to cut with a die 10mm threads into the shaft then thread a nut with red loctite a few threads onto it, worked very well

Take off the wheels then remove with circlip pliers the two gears (noting on each side they are facing the other way because they drive different directions) theres a ratcheting mechanism in there with one key and one spring in a slot and then three ratchet grooves in the gear, clean this out and pack this with grease. I think the left wheel in this video has the little key getting jammed and not driving the wheel quite properly

Great advice Diddleshot, that's what I was thinking too. I wonder if he tried that, or if he ever fixed the issue?
