- Here she is in the 3rd Act Pas (well...most of it except the intro) but you can still see her extraordinary musicality and style. Yes...dancers today have more beautiful feet and legs, and higher extensions, but none dance with the passion and daring....and SPEED. Her arms and hands alone are, for me at least. more interesting than the circus tricks so common today and interestingly, exactly the way Balanchine wanted.. Too each his own.
are these enough fouettes for those who say Maya Plisteskaya could not do fouettes, just because she chose not to do them in black swan pas de deux? she was amazing, her musicality was from another world, her hands, her expression... she was the best... inmortal Maya
Maya could do anything, that's why she did what she wanted. Nothing to prove.
The greatest ballerina musical and a fabulous Actress.
By the way, Plisetskaya is 43 on this record... amazing!
The authority she has! No smile, very fierce, proud, calm and strong. She reminds me of Leyla Gencer in Opera singers.
I like the way she walks flat feet on the ground when getting out of stage 😂

I saw every performance she danced in New York from 1962 on. She is one of the few dancers who could send audiences into genuine paroxysm of wild emotion - the other was Margot Fonteyn. They both had a femininity unlike today's mostly anorexic, barbie doll dancers, who are more gymnast than artists - albeit with very strong techniques.

pediatrapaola Didn't realise you weren't a fan of Diva Zakharova either, Enrico! I don't like her either; diva-wise she's this generation's Mathilde Kschessinskaya, who actually was a great dancer.
Svetlana Zakharova is the another great ballerina. I love both Indeed Maya and Svetlana!!!
Why are you always judging Zakharova in a negative way? (I have seen you in many videos). They are both brilliant ballerinas!
pediatrapaola, I feel the same way about SZ. She's a gymnast more than a dancer with her 180 degree extensions. No artistry that I can detect. Was it Sylvie Guillem who started the fad of hyperextensions? She leaves me cold too, except for her Raymonda piano variation which is the best I've seen.
Maya and Maris Liepa, here seen with her, were married at the time. I was a child when I saw her as Kitry, don't remember who Basil was, but Maya performance has been with me to this day.

Plisetskaya also had charisma in spades.
I think this was filmed not later than 1963, this is still done to the old decor. It was changed for a more 'modern' one around 1965 ...

Павлова в Китри была неплоха. И, вообще, она очень хорошая балерина, абсолютно недооценённая. Цискаридзе её очень ценит. Всегда была в тени тщеславного Гордеева. А он, как раз, очень посредственный и без Павловой кем бы был...

Not for nothing, the other dancer seen here is the great Bolshoi star and frequent partner of Plisetskaya, Maris Liepa.
By the way, Maris Liepa was Maya's first husband.
Moris Liepa is also great in this piece. Don't even know who of modern mail dancers can compare with him...
+Onora O'Neill , he - Maris. But you're right, with regard to dramatic talent, on the ballet stage with him hardly anyone can be compared.

Matter of opinion. I loved both and saw them live many, many, times, but for me Plisetskaya had the edge. Her energy and acting carried the day...and her technique was every bit as good as Maximova's, but Maximova had better shaped legs and feet...that's different than technique.
They are both exceptional but Maya owns the role and John was very discerning in what makes her dancing so special.
