The Abandoned Detroit Kettering High School: Everything Was Destroyed But the Dishes
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- I love exploring abandoned schools almost as much as I love exploring abandoned hospitals. Detroit Kettering High School in Detroit was home to many of the people I run into on a regular basis in and around Metro Detroit. It was only right that do an urban explore and capture this place before it deteriorated any further.

Kettering High School closed for good in June of 2012. In March of 2014, DPS announced that Kettering would be converted into an urban farm called the Kettering Urban Agricultural Campus that would provide fresh food to local schools. Early phases would involve building hoop houses on the parking lot and football field, as well as planting crops where the baseball fields were located.
Later phases would renovate the auditorium and athletic wings of the building for food production, while the classroom wings and administrative wings would be demolished. Though some early site preparation work was completed, including fencing off the property and installing security cameras, the project stalled as the district fell into a financial crisis. The plan was revived again in late 2016, but the property has deteriorated significantly as scrappers strip the building.

What was your favorite part of the video? Additional pictures are on my Instagram: instagram.com/1antondaniels/
Anton Daniels The basketball hoops. What a waste! Why don’t they donate them to a place that can use them? Crazy.
Michelle Walker there are no solutions, only questions. And the more we ask them, the more confused we will be 🤷🏾♂️
My favorite part was the stage area.
I work for a school district out west. It makes me sick to see such a beautiful building go down like that. The best part that I like about your videos is that you're documenting at least some of the history before it's gone. Keep up the good work.
Lots of these buildings get demolished after I explore them
This is so heartbreaking . My mom , aunt , uncles, and myself went to Kettering. Class of 96 sad.
Wow... so many people
Anton Daniels Kettering was my family tradition.
My uncles and mom went to my uncle was class of 1996 too
My grandma went to Cooley
My Oldest Sister , Graduated from Kettering in 1969 Class . And my second Oldest Sister was the Kettering Class of 1973 . And me and my Oldest Sister by 1 year Older than me .We Attended Kettering in 1979 . But We ended up ! Transferring to Finney High School after our first Semester. My Sister got kicked out of Kettering High School, for Fighting .And I just Transferred to Another School with her . I know alit of People who went, and Graduated from this School over the Years . My Grandmother stayed on Van Dyke for Years. In fact until her and my Grandfather died .😊
i graduated from that school, back in 01 and watching that video brought back alot of memories. Thank you for sharing
Glad I can bring some good memories back. What was it like then?
Anton Daniels for me personally, it was great..made a lot of friends and i lived on that stage because i took dance classes there for three years ( that was that one room with all the mirrors). It was just sad that we, or other schools for that matter, didn't get as much attention as Cass, King, or Renaissance High School. I think that help lead to alot of those schools downfall.
My first year was my last year there. Such a shame. I loved it there.
jason edwards KE had the best dance class period
I miss this school hell I miss walking the hallways. Class 07 KE Pioneer
Glad I could capture what was left for you
Kimberly Wright yes!! The same here C/O 89 btw😄
Awesome my Mom attended here... This School was built after Northeastern closed and it was built in sections, which explains the maze type layout of the school. Me being a DPS graduate, l love the old Detroit High Schools. It's hard and heartbreaking to see these schools in this condition... Detroit history down the drain. Keep up the work tho... I'm loving these videos!
Wow, where did you graduate from?
tanila porter Actually, The addition at Kettering was built after Northeastern closed.
Great video! It looked like they tried to make something amazing for the students with the baking classes and cosmetology area. It's unfortunate that it had to be closed.
My thoughts exactly. It was unique and amazing in that I’ve never seen anything like that in a high school before. Wish it could’ve been something more than what it was.
Class of 86.... cry eveytime I see my school in such condition. KE was an awesome school. I kept screaming at you "the gym is on the side" 😄😄😄... that hallway after you came out of the drafting room with the lockers across from the bay of windows was Senior Row for the senior classmen 😀..... Love my school
I'm looking at this and very sad crying I was class of 79 and my Big brother was the first graduate from The Big K.E. as we call Charles Francis "Kettering" High School. We had and still have so much love for old Kettering High School.
A developer bought the property and they are building a supplier plant there now
This is SUPER cool. It's really interesting to see these abandoned places and think about how they were bustling with people at one time.
I agree. That’s the best part for me because I know how significant these places were to so many people.
Class of ‘92! KE has everything! They actually taught classes that you could build a career on. Some of the rooms you went into...cooking class, cosmo classes, photo/film class, modern dance, sewing class, art, shop, drafting, ROTC, etc. The auditorium was epic...I remember when Guy performed there. KE had every team sport you could think of...basketball, baseball, football, golf, tennis, track, volleyball, weightlifting, swimming, and more....I remember when my counselor enrolled me in weightlifting....all the fellas laughed, the coach wouldn’t allow it...he said I was too small (4’11”, maybe 90lbs...a girl)! We had thee best & hypest Pep Rallies. Osborn & Pershing were rival schools. The common area was awesome.
The cool kids hallways were the Senior Strip & the Junior Strip...if you had a locker on one of these you were it. If you had an older sibling who attended prior to you, you knew everyone and had a locker on one of these strips...I was a lucky one.
I remember when apartheid in South Africa ended & Nelson Mandela was released we decorated the entire lunch room/school. I also remember when the movie Glory came out...we went to see it as a field trip.
What was in: Mustang 5.0, Levi Jeans all colors, Starter Jackets, Adidas Top 10’s, Cortez Nike, Fila, MCM, Gucci, Used, Gibaud Jeans, the Gap, Eastland Mall, Northland Mall, etc.
No shade but does anyone remember the name of officer with the clown-like hairdo??
It was a great place to visit
Anton Daniels THANK YOU for the video! I wanted to go “spelunking” in Kettering a few years back but I never did.
X Tubeit Remember we had a typing class the teacher name was Mrs. Barlow
@@AntonDaniels So much Talent utilized in this school and with all they had to offer it was perfect opportunity for an Awesome Uprising of Young Black Entrepreneurs but Of COURSE that was cut short because of the closing of the 1, the 1, the 1, HIGH SCHOOL in Detroit, out of all, to get shut down😡 this video is bittersweet...thanks for exploring taking us back down memory lane❤❤❤❤❤
My old school. Those hallways use to be lit just ran into Big Mac cool dude.I mss those fooball games, dances and swimming there Class of "93"
😂😂
Have you thought about bringing a friend along to your explorations? I mean, you're a brave dude for exploring solo, but it's always good to have some backup. Love your vids bro. 👍😎
Thanks friend... I’ve thought about it, but I just really don’t want to be responsible for another persons well being
Class of ‘08 This brought back some memories
I grew up on Van Dyke and Kenney. Kettering was our archrivals next to Cass Tech. I graduated from King High School in 83.' Back then, they had a "dog" at QB (Donovan Powell), who used to give us fits. We won every year though. Seeing this breaks my heart. What the hell happened to Detroit schools? Thanks for sharing my brother.
I want to thank you for the video; I was passing thru and happened upon here. This was a flashback for me I walked those halls and ran them trying to get to class, some classes were on the first floor and second. Class of 82' I believe the first class to graduate in the outside stadium. Kind of funny from what I remembered to get to the gym from the front( Office ) right inside front door as you came in and then you turned left and walked around to gym and cafeteria, Geez Memories. After graduation went into the military returned to Detroit on a few occasions, and yes they had quite a few vocational classes and tailoring was one of them, we used to actually order food from the cooking classes, you had to cross 94 for the automotive classes. Wow. Never thought it would look like that, but then again 30 odd years later.
It’s amazing what time does to these places. You’re welcome friend
My Dad used to live a couple of blocks from Kettering and this video brought back some memories.
That school had me running in circles at night, its like a maze. You missed the 4.5 million dollar pool bro. Very strange it had about a hundred tee lights all around the pool.
I heard they had a pool also, I just really couldn’t find it 🤔 if I had stayed any longer, my battery would’ve been dead anyway 😂 it was a fun explore though
Anton Daniels You were very close a few times lol. Unfortunately due to the scrappers, its difficult to navigate through the school. Good job Anton and stay safe.
Thanks friend. I hate when people tear these places up.
Oh yeah, and I subscribed to your channel... perhaps we will do a collab or run into each other one day. I love your Ohio videos
Anton Daniels for sure hit me up. Thanks for subbing. I have some cool locations, I would love to have someone else explore with me.
Wow! I am a Kettering alumni class of 94. Mr. McCoy was my favorite teacher. I remember hearing him singing "Dream Dream in the hallway, watching the movie Glory, and studying the assassination of J F K. I had some great times at Kettering, My other favorite teacher was Mr. Brown. He was the music teacher. I was in the ensemble. I really hate to see my old school in this condition.
thank you please keep this on here i went here it was the best 4 yrs of my life i will always love the k
Glad I was able to capture it for you friend
Anton Daniels you did good, and was you in there alone?
I always go alone.
Anton Daniels i heard that somebody baught the school
The pride of the Eastside. I graduated in 85. The science, upstairs were the Algebra and Geometry classes. My favorite part was the fine arts building for dance, drama instruments and choir classes. Best performances in that auditorium.
A lot of people loved this school
I’m surprised they left all the dishes. Awesome job on this exploration!
Thank you!
This was a bitter sweet one because my mom graduated from Kettering!!!
Thank you Anton, im class of 1984
You’re welcome
I was a graduate student from the class of 79 so what you showing when I attended it was much different in 79 and the pool then was beautiful.
Damn This Was My High School East Side Detroit I was There From Class 88 To Grad 91 sad How They Let This School Go My Mom Attended This School And Also My Aunty RIP To Both Of Them Now But Sad To See All These Memories Of This School Go
It is pretty sad
@@AntonDaniels yes it is
Explored this school about 6 months ago, the bookshelves were completely intact. It's wild to see it in this condition. So much has changed.
I did see yours... I missed the pool
The pool also had an underground tunnel system for the locker rooms. I've never seen anything like it.
Really... that’s wild
This School Like Any Other High School Got Alot Of Memeries And History To It Alot Of People 1960s1970s 1980s And 1990s to 2000s Went Here I Left There In 2003.
Dude! I would never go in there. You are a God for doing that 🙌🏿🙌🏿
🙌🏾 I have to capture these places before they are torn down. I can’t help it 🧐
Notification squad even though it's 5am CT! Early morning work as a unloader. Morning Anton, first Urban of 2018! Start it out right!
You know I’m going to make sure I give you that much needed video 😂
Love the video. I’m a high school teacher in Delaware. It’s surreal and a little creepy seeing an abandoned school.
It's being torn down now I believe
My momma graduated in '04 from here
Really... 🤔
Anton Daniels yes I'm young
@@bri3211 You're a baby diaper 😂
Went there 2000-2002 when they was still giving out “the wood” lol
Seriously loving your videos - I've been waiting for someone to create a legit channel for urban exploring and here you are! Thanks for sharing all your explorations!
Thanks for the love ❤️
Great video man this is by far my favorite place to explore
Thank you friend. Hopefully you are a respectable explorer like me 😉
As usual, amazing video. Great way to kick off a great 2018.
I’m looking forward to this year
Please don’t stop exploring I really needed to see these places
There is more coming soon. Thanks for the feedback friend.
So sad that we lost so many beautiful schools and architecture to the city , they just don’t care about the important stuff in the communities
My nephew graduated from Bates Academy in Detroit, I think it was 1997. Anyhow his 8th grade class had their graduation at Kettering. I remember how beautiful the auditorium was. I was so amazed at the architecture of it!!! Wow!!!
P.S. I'm a native Detroiter too! (Northwest side). Love your videos and I am subscribing right now!
Some company just bought the Kettering property
WOW....I used to ride past there back in the 80's....THAT BIG K USED TO STAND OUT. WOW.
Very sad. I graduated 76! Wow..
Sad, but good to move on
I would be *so* spooked in that situation. You must have balls to do that.
The biggest kahunas ever 😂
Anton don’t leave the crib without his Buddy. 🔨
I wish you would’ve went In the choir room there where I spent most of my time .... The pool is was beautiful site .... I really hate that school went down I have some good times there 00-02
I wish I would’ve too
The house behind you @17:41 is the home that I was raised in from 1975 to 1998.
The only abandoned school I've actually explored is the one Johnny Cash went to in Dyess, Arkansas. I live in Michigan, but we were there visiting my family. My great grandpa went to high school with JC. Oh, and, cool video. Watching it now.
That’s definitely history worth capturing. How long ago was this?
Man i miss this school , i graduated from there in 2009 never thought n a million years it would be like this 😢 every school i went to Chandler, Barbour, and Kettering is now closed.
That’s crazy
You got pictures of Kettering West Wing. Many of the rooms were KWW. I saw my old classroom 118 B Hygiene and grooming. Multipurpose room was our gym and lunch room. The ramps were there becuase we had wheelchair bound students. Our student population was 12-26. It brought back happy and sad memories. That low "table" in the multipurpose room minus the blue cushion was used for changing and other tables like this were used for physical therapy. Yes some of our kids had to wear diapers but they were the nicest kids around. When they closed KWW the kids went to Diann Banks Williamson an annex to East English Village and others went to Jerry L. White. Anton Daniels I hope you see this comment. It would answer a lot of your questions. We closed in 2012. Kettering HS closed earlier.
GO BLUE HOUSE PIONEERS!!!!
Thanks for the feedback and insight.
I remember this one!! I just saw your other ones today
Thank you for the love and support
I was in Woonsocket and I found some leftover yearbooks dating back to 2007.
Man I’m so hurt seeing this cool closed I graduated from Kettering in 2005 but boy did we have a lot of fun in this school. And yes it’s was a very popular high school too attend
A new company bought the property now.
Yes I heard it’s going to be turned into a Chrysler supplier I think
Keep doing these explores! So many abandoned places in Detroit.
There are, but some of them aren’t worth seeing... trust me 😂
Oh my gosh!! You went to Cass Tech?? I went to school in St. Johns and our orchestra came to Cass Tech and went to class with them for a day two years in a row. It's such a weird feeling that CT is long gone - so big and beautiful.
That’s awesome... the school isn’t gone, they just built a new one
I thought they had to tear it down after someone set it on fire?? Either way - so sad. One of the most interesting things I ever got to do in high school was visit Cass Tech.
Damn I wish you had more subscribers, these videos are awsome
You and I both... wouldn’t that be nice?!
John Adam he just getting started . Remember you don’t need a million ppl. 1 person can change your life
You know why this video is so good? Because he uses a REAL flashlight, not the teensy thing on his cell phone. We can actually see down some of the dark hallways. Flashlights don't cost a fortune. I've bought a tiny one for about $9 online that is only 2" long and runs on one AA battery. And it lights up TWICE as much space as a silly iphone camera flash.
PS Anton, I also took drafting in high school. Unfortunately, so did all the bullies and losers. They thought they could just draw a bunch of lines and get an A. They were so lazy that I drew the floor plans for a VERY basic house (one bedroom, one bathroom, one kitchen, one living room and a 2 car garage.). They all gathered around and said "Damn! I don't know how he does it!" Even in the late 90s, schools were starting to decline partly because they didn't care about bullying and only wanted to show their authority. I'm glad I got out of school before it turned into a political indoctrination clinic.
Great comment... thanks for the feedback
That was very concise and I've had the same experiences when it comes to dealing with people that have a lack of knowledge or even common sense , I'm 18 just graduated last year , and the type of classrooms you describe sound identical to ones I came up in . I can definitely say the decline is generational and essentially hereditary . The only way to break the cycle is too start from the Nuclues and build out
Wow! Memories
Awesome video! I graduated from there in 98.
Thank you friend
Awesome vids man - I just subscribed - from mad heights
Shout out to Madison Heights! Thanks for the love friend!
I'm late and someone might have already answered this, but they bust the windows out and take the doors off so people don't move in there, if you make it ineffective shelter it stays empty.
Great video. This is the 3rd one I've watched. The 1st was the truth about Detroit and the 2nd gave more information and history about the sections of the city(everything you want to know about Woodard Ave). I really have enjoyed the videos.
Glad you find my content impactful
Never liked school, bad memories. But very interesting.Love old buildings!
Most people share your sentiment
I Missed This School O4
Wow, must be interesting to see it like this.
Miss my school class of 2004
Great videos!! I'm really enjoying them. Thank you for sharing. :)
Love from Canada
Thanks friend
this was the school where the boys from Drexciya first met. i wonder if they spent any time in that room with the wall of mirrors (i imagine it was a dance studio). sad that such a historic place will never bear a plaque memorializing them, and has likely been torn down now.
I’ll have to do some research on the people you stated are
Nice video Anton
Thank you so much!
I would be bothered if my high school looked like that but it's going to be a long time till then. My high school opened in 2009 just in time for my Freshman year
Wow, a relatively new school... that’s refreshing
Anton Daniels yeah it was real nice
www.sandstromarchitecture.com/project/wasatch-high-school/
Class of '97
What do you think about the school today?
Hard to believe I actually graduated from here 8 years ago.
You’re still a baby 👶
Exactly at 11:00 min in the video when he was saying can I get any louder if you look behind him down the hallway you will see a ghost pass by ! Clearly ....
marcus graham I think you may be right... I watched the scene like 100 times now that youve said that. Sheesh
😳😳😳 so did I...woowww scary!!!
that was my school so sad
I think its getting torn down soon
The gym is the best part of it
I agree wholeheartedly
Looks like that school offered everything. What a waste for it to die like that. Wonder why it closed. Great explore. Thanks
It was a pretty nice school in its hey day I hear
Another good exploration with you!!! Isn't funny how you can walk into all these places, they never fix broken fences etc. I just googled earthed this school, and I see not to far, I think the factory with the cards maybe. Anyhow, you have lots to explore over there in Detroit. Sad that the exit of mfg destroyed your city!!
I agree... and it is sad. Thankfully, it is making a phenomenal resurgence. Detroit is in a much better place today than maybe 10 years ago. Thanks friend!
If I’m not mistaken they use to have vocational technology classes there. That’s why they had the industrial kitchen and the cosmetology lab.
I think you’re correct.
Thank you for having the courage to do this stuff because I could not do this.
I certainly wouldn’t advice anyone doing this
Cool location and a great video, good work.
Thanks friend. As always, I appreciate it
I never seen that in my high school
seen what exactly?
All of my family went there my grandma, my momma class of 98 (R.I.P), my uncles, and my god mom. My grandad also was the athletic director and his name is the name of the football field (R.I.P)
Sorry to see it go.
I use attended KE Back in 07-08 the worst time to attend that school
Really? That's actually really great insight.
Anton Daniels I was a Freshman & Sophomore then, I can tell you that was bound to happen
My brother went to Kettering High School
Make sure you share this video with him. I’d love to hear his thoughts.
Anton Daniels i got u
You should do all the high schools in the city that's close down
That’s a really good idea 💡
Class of 2008 wow!
It’s crazy how much it’s deteriorated in just 7 years
Incredible
Yes alot of remembered just love this school
Glad you have great memories of this place
Nice video anton
Thanks friend. Lotsa work go into it.
The homeless must not know this place exist
I went there from 01-04
Hopefully this gives you some insight on the current state of things
Another very great video this channel is so good 😁
Glad you’re loving the content. You know I do it for you!
I went back when u posted this video to see it, and all of it was destroyed the kitchen supplies stolen, that room with the plates was trashed they knocked down the shelves... my favorite area was the cosmetology class all the mirrors were beautiful but when I went I could of cried at the sight of all the mirrors being shattered, not one was left alone... I wish u left the location out the video... the second time I tired to visit the city must of notice the popularity bc they boarded it up with plexiglass
Yeah, it is unfortunate... but what can you do?
That’s true it was gonna happen one way or another...
Such a waste. All that kitchen equipment could still be in use somewhere. Place only closed 7 years ago.
It’s being torn down I think
Nice video you missed the big pool. have seen video from this place before.
Yeah, apparently I did miss it... 🤨
Mane all my aunties and uncles couple cousins went there should really bring it back
It’s pretty much dead. They are building something else there now.
Anton Daniels yea I heard but it would be good for them to bring it back 😭 just like how they doing with Joyce elementary school not to far from the big K
Okayyy Anton. I'm officially very Hooked on your vids. You do a great job of making all of your videos interesting. I'm from Ann Arbor, but my dad grew up in Detroit. He has told me so many Detroit stories from the 1980s & the '90s. It's So interesting, but So, So Sad what has happened. I'm a student at U of M and have an idea for a Detroit historical project that could include clips from your vids if it's okay with you.
This is the video that first hooked me because I remember the Blue Kettering "K" from one day in the spring of 2017. On that day, my brand new, 3-day old car broke down on the I-94 ramp right in front of it. An 18y/o clueless girl from the suburbs dressed for summer. It made for a VERY interesting couple hours until I got rescued or as my dad still calls it "The Extraction"
Thank you for the Love💖 & time you put into these. Maybe I'll see you at your restaurant one day.😃
Hit me up on IG 😉
KE Bluehouse Class Of 03!!!!!😭😔😔😔
I went here for my sister and cousin's graduation
That dark room is super cool
I think so also
I enjoy your videos.
Wow, thank you. Much appreciated friend!
Miss The K C/04
❤️
Another great video Anton!
🙌🏾 thanks bro. It means a lot to me when you truly enjoy it.
Person walking in the hallway at 10:57 .......
I mustve missed it
I can't figure why anyone would go to the effort to purposely destroy parts of those abandoned buildings even just to spray paint graffiti.. Ohwell Nice Video Thank you.
You’re welcome
You missed so much that's really interesting. They have what looks like a JROTC room with a rifle range. And behind there's a door that leads into what looks like a bullet catcher and it had bullet marks in it.
I couldn’t put EVERYTHING in just 1 video
@@AntonDaniels go back and do part 2
i went to this skool in 88 0r 89 the big daddy kane days when hip-hop was real
😂
