The Abandoned Detroit Kettering High School: Everything Was Destroyed But the Dishes

  • I love exploring abandoned schools almost as much as I love exploring abandoned hospitals. Detroit Kettering High School in Detroit was home to many of the people I run into on a regular basis in and around Metro Detroit. It was only right that do an urban explore and capture this place before it deteriorated any further.

Kettering High School closed for good in June of 2012. In March of 2014, DPS announced that Kettering would be converted into an urban farm called the Kettering Urban Agricultural Campus that would provide fresh food to local schools. Early phases would involve building hoop houses on the parking lot and football field, as well as planting crops where the baseball fields were located.
Later phases would renovate the auditorium and athletic wings of the building for food production, while the classroom wings and administrative wings would be demolished. Though some early site preparation work was completed, including fencing off the property and installing security cameras, the project stalled as the district fell into a financial crisis. The plan was revived again in late 2016, but the property has deteriorated significantly as scrappers strip the building.

I work for a school district out west. It makes me sick to see such a beautiful building go down like that. The best part that I like about your videos is that you're documenting at least some of the history before it's gone. Keep up the good work.

Anton Daniels for me personally, it was great..made a lot of friends and i lived on that stage because i took dance classes there for three years ( that was that one room with all the mirrors). It was just sad that we, or other schools for that matter, didn't get as much attention as Cass, King, or Renaissance High School. I think that help lead to alot of those schools downfall.

Awesome my Mom attended here... This School was built after Northeastern closed and it was built in sections, which explains the maze type layout of the school. Me being a DPS graduate, l love the old Detroit High Schools. It's hard and heartbreaking to see these schools in this condition... Detroit history down the drain. Keep up the work tho... Class of ‘92! KE has everything! They actually taught classes that you could build a career on. Some of the rooms you went into...cooking class, cosmo classes, photo/film class, modern dance, sewing class, art, shop, drafting, ROTC, etc. The auditorium was epic...I remember when Guy performed there. KE had every team sport you could think of...basketball, baseball, football, golf, tennis, track, volleyball, weightlifting, swimming, and more....I remember when my counselor enrolled me in weightlifting....all the fellas laughed, the coach wouldn’t allow it...he said I was too small (4’11”, maybe 90lbs...a girl)! We had thee best & hypest Pep Rallies. Osborn & Pershing were rival schools. The common area was awesome.
The cool kids hallways were the Senior Strip & the Junior Strip...if you had a locker on one of these you were it. If you had an older sibling who attended prior to you, you knew everyone and had a locker on one of these strips...I was a lucky one.
I remember when apartheid in South Africa ended & Nelson Mandela was released we decorated the entire lunch room/school. I also remember when the movie Glory came out...we went to see it as a field trip.
What was in: Mustang 5.0, Levi Jeans all colors, Starter Jackets, Adidas Top 10’s, Cortez Nike, Fila, MCM, Gucci, Used, Gibaud Jeans, the Gap, Eastland Mall, Northland Mall, etc.
No shade but does anyone remember the name of officer with the clown-like hairdo??

I grew up on Van Dyke and Kenney. Kettering was our archrivals next to Cass Tech. I graduated from King High School in 83.' Back then, they had a "dog" at QB (Donovan Powell), who used to give us fits. We won every year though. Seeing this breaks my heart. What the hell happened to Detroit schools? Thanks for sharing my brother.

I want to thank you for the video; I was passing thru and happened upon here. This was a flashback for me I walked those halls and ran them trying to get to class, some classes were on the first floor and second. Class of 82' I believe the first class to graduate in the outside stadium. Kind of funny from what I remembered to get to the gym from the front( Office ) right inside front door as you came in and then you turned left and walked around to gym and cafeteria, Geez Memories. After graduation went into the military returned to Detroit on a few occasions, and yes they had quite a few vocational classes and tailoring was one of them, we used to actually order food from the cooking classes, you had to cross 94 for the automotive classes. Wow. Never thought it would look like that, but then again 30 odd years later.

You got pictures of Kettering West Wing. Many of the rooms were KWW. I saw my old classroom 118 B Hygiene and grooming. Multipurpose room was our gym and lunch room. The ramps were there becuase we had wheelchair bound students. Our student population was 12-26. It brought back happy and sad memories. That low "table" in the multipurpose room minus the blue cushion was used for changing and other tables like this were used for physical therapy. Yes some of our kids had to wear diapers but they were the nicest kids around. When they closed KWW the kids went to Diann Banks Williamson an annex to East English Village and others went to Jerry L. White. Anton Daniels I hope you see this comment. It would answer a lot of your questions. We closed in 2012. Kettering HS closed earlier.

You know why this video is so good? Because he uses a REAL flashlight, not the teensy thing on his cell phone. We can actually see down some of the dark hallways. Flashlights don't cost a fortune. I've bought a tiny one for about $9 online that is only 2" long and runs on one AA battery. And it lights up TWICE as much space as a silly iphone camera flash.
PS Anton, I also took drafting in high school. Unfortunately, so did all the bullies and losers. They thought they could just draw a bunch of lines and get an A. They were so lazy that I drew the floor plans for a VERY basic house (one bedroom, one bathroom, one kitchen, one living room and a 2 car garage.). They all gathered around and said "Damn! I don't know how he does it!" Even in the late 90s, schools were starting to decline partly because they didn't care about bullying and only wanted to show their authority. I'm glad I got out of school before it turned into a political indoctrination clinic.

That was very concise and I've had the same experiences when it comes to dealing with people that have a lack of knowledge or even common sense , I'm 18 just graduated last year , and the type of classrooms you describe sound identical to ones I came up in . I can definitely say the decline is generational and essentially hereditary . The only way to break the cycle is too start from the Nuclues and build out

this was the school where the boys from Drexciya first met. i wonder if they spent any time in that room with the wall of mirrors (i imagine it was a dance studio). sad that such a historic place will never bear a plaque memorializing them, and has likely been torn down now.

I wish u left the location out the video... the second time I tired to visit the city must of notice the popularity bc they boarded it up with plexiglass

Okayyy Anton. I'm officially very Hooked on your vids. You do a great job of making all of your videos interesting. I'm from Ann Arbor, but my dad grew up in Detroit. He has told me so many Detroit stories from the 1980s & the '90s. It's So interesting, but So, So Sad what has happened. I'm a student at U of M and have an idea for a Detroit historical project that could include clips from your vids if it's okay with you.
This is the video that first hooked me because I remember the Blue Kettering "K" from one day in the spring of 2017. On that day, my brand new, 3-day old car broke down on the I-94 ramp right in front of it. An 18y/o clueless girl from the suburbs dressed for summer. It made for a VERY interesting couple hours until I got rescued or as my dad still calls it "The Extraction"
Thank you for the Love💖 & time you put into these. Maybe I'll see you at your restaurant one day.😃
