hey, so i decided to show you my portfolio to help whom need help. I know that some of you might be applying for university and been asked for a portfolio. tbh, I am also applying for university as well. I did get some offers and i am still taking interviews. I had applied for both foundation art and Product design
If you have any question about portfolios or interviews or wanting me to ask me any question please feel free do to do I really love to help and love to read your comments.

The intro was made by the amazing and only RedOpTicZero go an subscribe to him www.youtube.co... - Навчання та стиль
Dee Khawaja so basically pick and chose your best art work / photography/graphic design work that you had done that you feel proud with. pick pieces that show that you can develop and idea and experiment with different mediums.
as graphic design includes many computer design work, show your computer design skills as well.
do you have to have a video or sth of you drawing- like a proof that you did the work. Ive heard some universities ask for that im not sure
lol play this on x2 speed you will still understand everything and nothing goes too fast.
Thank you SO much for this video! I'm a English major/Graphic Design minor and I'm definately thinking about doing my graduate studies in graphic design. I have to make a portfolio but I had no idea how to and until now, no other video has given me clarity. Thank you SO much! You're an amazing artist!
thank you! glad my video helped :)
As somebody who will be applying for uni (product design) I am really amazed by your portfolio and especially the prototypes you have made. However, it is also making me quite concerned as I don't have any of those (I have various drawings/paintings and photography). And so I would like to ask are prototypes mandatory for such a portfolio and did you have any previous experience from school or did you create them entirely on your own?
Did you get into a uni you liked for product design
MissKookiii i remember when we were setting up the exhibition for AS, I lost my mock piece, i placed it in the pile with the others but it just dissapeared , i was looking for it for 3 days before the examiner comes to mark it but couldn't find it until someone found it when I started year 13. I hope you find them. however in year 13 when i was setting my exhibition i lost my photography books, it was me and three other people, we looked though two classes that we used (we had 4 art classes in my school) and then i found them with some year 7-11 art teacher in her shelf. things get really stressful. and I think that if you placed it in your shelf, it should be the staff who must help you out to find it because they told you to put your stuff in the shelf you are meant to put it. however i think that if you have few photographed pieces in your portfolio it would be okay as long as they are not all photographed so they interviewers can have a sense of material and texture you use. if you looked through my whole portfolio i photographed many pieces which were on canvas. i think the best thing to do is to do more stuff at home that is outside of the school to show that you are doing art because you like it and not because you have to do it because of your course and you can also redo the pieces, which i know will be a pain, if you absolutely cannot find it. make sure you check the other art class rooms if you have more than one at your college/school. :) good luck on your portfolio :D
Thank you so much!!! I'm not applying for college but for a private art school I'm still freshman in highschool (just turned into a sophomore) but I need a portfolio and I didn't know exactly what was needed or how to organize it.
Thank you! the paper I used was an A2 size Cartridge paper,it's the paper usually used in sketchbooks because many media work on it, it is cheap but can crumple with water. I wouldn't go for print paper as it does leak through. but the best paper for watercolour would be watercolour paper, it is thick and it doesn't leak through but it can have a slight of a texture to it and can be expensive. A4 paper is okay, however I recommend the bigger the better, try A3. it depends on the portfolio size.
aw thanks. Yes, you are supposedly meant of have some experience with art before apply for an art uni couse. I gained experience only through my GCSE and Alevel art and never really had any job or did work experience before uni. some people are self taught artist and if you can show a good portfolio and a sketchbook with some drawings, research, analytical skills and show that you really need that particular art degree then they can accept you (any college digree is needed, doesn't have to be art
i wanna apply for the foundation because i didnt choose product design at a level but the only problem is that i have no portfolio because i did not do product design at a level
well im applying for a degree in industrial design I need my portfolio done by the end of this year lol
This is going back awhile now....the qualification was for a Ba Hons in illustration.
Your portfolio IS important obviously but they also want to see sketch books to back up your art - which can consist of anything really. Figure drawing is also important and your own personality and how that relates to your work :)
This takes me back - I had to do this back in the 90s :) They can be soooo tough too in the interviews even though your work is the best it could be.
What is written in the right corner ? Can't reed it. And what kind of paper have you used?
Do you have any tips for a portfolio that you have to submit online? And is there a specific length that it must be? :/ thanks!
+Tingu Loh yes! I have submitted online portfolios so I can give you few tips. Usually the university tells you how many pages they want to see, if they haven't mentioned how much they want to see, send them 10 pages. but same rules go as the physical version, put your best pieces and show development.
TheSuperFunArt when you say development, do you mean the development on one particular piece or a development and progression of all your pieces in general? thank you so much!!
+Tingu Loh development of a project
Kind of a stupid question but how did you make the finished product for each work to where it fit perfectly in the folder. Did you take a picture of the finished product and then print it out on the same type of paper for each, or did you glue them on a sense onto the white paper?
I’m not going into a university but there is a art program for my school that I’m applying to and it requires a portfolio.
hi, this is an A2 portfolio, i thought an A1 was slightly too big for me to use for transport plus the biggest size the school printer could print was A3 and an A3 paper would look very small on an A1 paper, however my art teacher recomended an A1.
i recomend if you are going to do art go for A1 or A2, if you are going for product design go with A3 or A2
Just wondering..Does the work included in your portfolio have to be from school/college or can it be personal work done from home? Thanks
+Dajai Walker yes. It can be something personal and you done at home too. It's good to have a Viarity of both
Thankyou!
A good portion of what I do on my channel is talk about art degrees and tips from what I learned as an art major as well as what I life is like after an art degree...some of you might be interested in those videos but I am also taking requests ;) This is a great topic that I have not really addressed. Great video and advice!
so that means before you apply in Uni you've had a job already right?because you seem professional and had a lot experience.
did i need to put original works of mine in my portfolio
When u made ur portfolio what was the hardest and why
Very nice work you got there! You are going to do awesome in photography I'm sure. Gotta say, I love your intro as well.
What questions did they ask in interview? And for what qualification?
@TheSuperFanArt your work is great! Can I ask you, where you applied at?
Hi, Great work! just wondering what brand are the sketch books in that portfolio. ?
thank you so much this is really helpful, im stressing out about my portfolio because most of my work was stolen, so i dont have much to put into it
Product design, that's interesting! :) Looks professional indeed, and the 'childish' page as you said is so cute! Great and helpful video!

On the first project, what material did you use to cover a persons head?
Hello, can you include work that you have created outside of education?
Of course:)
+Dione Harrington yes! please do!
thanks love and good luck :) im in college already just want to illustrate childrens books so i want to have a portfolio to show me capabilities. thanks for your time
Am I allowed to apply for art in university even if I don't have any qualifications? Just artwork done in my free time?
so which point were you at here, were you coming from college after studying design now going to university, or coming from highschool?
so this video was made last year in which i was in my last year of high school studying Alevel art, product design and photography and I was applying to either to go to Foundation art year at college or Product deign degree at university. this year I am doing my first year product design at University and decided not to go to Foundation year. :)
right because it is different for you guys where you live right like in high school you study what you plan to do for a career right? because for us we study like english french math history geography science etc. in high school and only study our career subject in college or university. like we dont have classes like product design in high school
it's slightly the same, the last two years of highschool can also be studied in college. some highschools here don't have the last two years which we call "sixthform" so sixthform aka last two years would be year 12 and 13 and they are optional. what we have is from year 7 to 9 the school makes u do all the subjects, year 10 and 11 is when we start our GCSEs so the school makes us do science, english and maths and then we chose 4 subjects of our own, in year 12 we chose our favourite subjects usually we would chose 4 and then in year 13 which is the final year we drop one of the 4 so we only study 3 and then after that it's Uni.
okay thats right because i was watching another video which led me to believe that it worked differently out there where i live (canada) grade 7 and 8 and pretty much elementary or "middle school" then from 9-12 it is high school studying their 30 required credits and a few electives in there which we can choose but only out of the list what the individual school offers so there would be no design and most dont have photography we would have to take just fine art or visual are and then after grade 12 we go to college or uni but anyways lol great video it was awesome to see your portfolio it was great
the reason why i was asking actually was because i was so impressed with your portfolio i was like mine looks nothing like that going into design school lol so i was wondering why you were saying that a lot of it was assignments made me feel a little better lol
go ahead and show us your portfolio, I would defiantly watch it!
Thanks for your video!! Your artworks are so good!! Just a random question, where did you get your sketchbook? The big folder holds three sketchbooks seems really convenient! Thanks :)
thanks! glad you enjoyed my work! i got the sketchbook from school, you can buy them from there however you can easily find them at your local art shop, the company is called "seawhite of briton" or just seawhite . they have a website here " www.seawhite.com ", but it's cheaper when you buy them from school though. also another good company is called "Daler Rowney". I tried to look for a label on the portfolio to tell you the name but there wasn't a label but it's an A2 size and you can buy it from any art shop i think, it's a good price it was 21 pounds also it's water proof and has a nice pattern engraved to it. i recommend a water proof portfolio because let me tell you it rained a lot!
good luck with your application :)
any thoughts for me? I am applyig for a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.
I am handing in my portfolio in a week. I have gathered everything i have done. I have about 7-10 final pieces. A mixture of sizes. Varying from a small triptych A6(x3) to a few A4 and a few A3s. Besides these i have Observational drawings on an A1 (They dont take up the whole page). Do you think this is a good variation?
It ends up being around 12-20 sheets of paper which i am mounting on A1. I know Quality over Quantity but with 2 final pieces i have the process (2 a3 pages for both) showing how i got to finalising the idea and how i got to that point.
Then i have 2 sketchbooks and my Graphic Design Coursework to show.
Thanks for any comments.
P.S. One Uni wants 12 A1 observational drawings (Yes i know Massive lol) and as many other final pieces and ideas with it.
Hey!
Yes that's a perfect variation of final pieces and development work, that is exactly what they want. also your page count is good.
it seems like it's all good and you are on the right path, congratulations, you completed your portfolio to perfection :) good luck with your interview :)
oh, also for the uni that asked for 12 A1 observational drawings you can adjust your portfolio according to them and then change it back for the other interviews.
ok Thanks. That means a lot! :)
I love your Portfolio and Great Art Work too! :) it was nice see all your amazing Art..well done
Hi, lovely video! Imposing to do an interior and spatial design course. What sort of drawings should this have in my portfolio?
Thanks!:) For your course I would recommend to show off prototyping skills using cards and other materials and making card structures and also showing off your CAD skills. For example using Google Sketch up. hand drawing would be maybe making a structure and drawing from them. try exploring different perspectives of drawing objects and rooms.
Thank you very much!
cool I might have to dig out my end of HS portfolio...Wow, I'm not sure where it is located.
Very heavy breathing
basically i put all of my projects onto my shelf at college last week, i know i did because i organised it in order and put it there and a few days later i went to get it and most of it had gone, ive searched everyones stuff, my tutors said its my responsibility to look after it, urgh :( i photographed my work yeah but not all of it and i cant just have photographs in ky portfolio
what is the size of your portfolio?? is it A1?
Did you use this to apply to an undergraduate program from high school? A lot of works in the portfolio does not seems like what most high school students are capable of, and I'm talking about the product design part.
hi, yes, this was my high school work applying for undergraduate course. people should be able to do this work in year 12/13... it's a learning process of getting better every time.
At first I thought this was undergrad work as she was applying for grad school...this is awesome.
I'm shocked about the presentation because generally school doesn't teach that
Great video and thank you very much for the ideas :)
love doing this
hi i love your work hooe you get into your university of preferance but what paper do you use for water color ? is A4 paper okey just normal print paper
Does your portfolio need a constant theme? Ive been out education for 8 yrs, so I'm starting from scratch again. Just wondering if it's best to make a topic and follow, or just wing it a bit.
Dianne Graham: It's a good idea to have some thread which runs throughout the portfolio so you can evidence a "journey" in your work. However, this doesn't have to be a continuous theme; you could use similar subject matter or media to tie it together instead. I would still advise that you show a topic you are really interested in, as this can visibly give drive to your work.
Hi, I was wondering whether industrial design would require similar things in the portfolio? I'm rather unsure because I have many realistic (scenery) paintings but not much else other than a clay sculpture and a few original product designs made on Autodesk Inventor. I'm just worried that I may not have what it takes to have a "competitive" portfolio and get overlooked. Thanks!
hi, well I applied to Product design which is very similar (or exactly is) product design and I got offers from this portfolio that i showed in the video. so yes, art and paintings are acceptable because it shows your hand skills, your creativity, different ways of recording and that is a good thing. as long as you have some sort of a hint of product design then they would like you. you said that you had some product designs on autodesk which is a good thing to show how you draw using a computer and your computer skills as well as your design skills. In my portfolio less than 1/3 of my work was product design the rest was art and photography, so what you have is very good.
TheSuperFunArt Thanks for the reply!

Hey i applied to graphic design and they asked for a portfolio and im not sure what i should do exactly .. I must only show some drawings or i can take photos and put them in my portfolio .. And im scared it wont be good enough :/
+Dee Khawaja how did it go?
Great practical advice and great work which will really help our students, thanks:)
How much sketches I put in my portfolio
Thank you for sharing your artwork and experience, it was most helpful. Also lovely drawings! (If only I were as good as you...)
Hey, Do you know if it would be a waste of time if you do a foundation course if you already did a level 3 BTEC course because I am still unsure whether to go University or not ?
I am just finishing a BTEC level 3 course and im applying and going to interviews for foundation now. The reason i chose to do this is mainly because in the foundation year they help you build a stronger portfolio for degree. If you dont do foundation you'll be applying to degree against people who have most likely done a foundation already and ,depending on how confident you are in your portfolio from btec, it could put you at a disadvantage. also i dont know exactly what i want to specialise in yet and foundation gives you time to get a broader scope to experiment with all the options before deciding. Another draw is if you're under 19 its free from most places to (unless private)
thanks for the tip jack, im trying my best. you had to see how long the video was, it was 20 mins and had alot of umms and uhhs, i tried to edit them out. hopefully this youtube video blogging will improve my confidence in speech :P
oh cool, children's illustration. yeah, I think An A4 would be a good size. I would recommend if you used watercolour paper for a children's illustation book portfolio, it adds the high quality to it and makes it good to work with. good luck!
which university are you in?
I'm applying for architecture, do you have any advice for me? I mostly just use graphite and oil pastel or watercolors. Also some photography
hi, that's good, yes i would put all this work in. also show some use of model making and drawing geometric shapes
Because i'm doing Digital Media as well as A-Level fine art, do you reckon that it would be good to include some of my digital media work as well as the arty stuff even though i don't intend to carry on the digital media after i have finished my A-Levels?
hi, i recommend if you are applying to the top 20 unis for art you should stick to for example if you are doing art just show your artwork. two of the universities i applied to were in the top 20 art unis in london and they didn't accept me because i had a large viarity of work and top unis tend to want to only focus on the subject that you are applying for. one of these two unis said why did I not take photography because i showed them lots of photography work and they told me to take a foundation before coming into their course. however the other unis I applied to were in the top 50-100 and they liked the viarity of stuff i had. one of the interviewers actually was very interested in one painting in particular even though the course i applied to was product design.
I think if you are thinking of including your digital media is not include essays or news articals, if there was some piece that is "arty" such as a digital drawing (graphic design) you made or maybe you designed a full magazine and you want to show off your talents and you really love the piece you can pop at the back of the portfolio. However my final recommendation is to just keep it art related because digital media seems more "literature and language", however if you did Graphic design then put it in because it has the "pop art" feature.
oh, not to forget that in your personal statement you can write how the subjects that you took for a levels had helped you develop your work or get your inspirations or how the skills you learnt could help with your uni work. such you did digital media which gained you analytical skills, or getting inspiration from stories and putting it in your artwork in a way, we all have different reasons.
good luck on your application and you future :)
What university did you get into?!
can i get into a foundation year with 5 o levels only ?
Hi! Im actually planning to send in my portfolio in the next few days and its a digital one mainly because Im applying overseas. Im wondering how many life drawings are needed? I havent really included anything that I have seen to be called a lie drawing but I do have some pieces that include figures and portraits and still life. They've given me a limit of 12 images, do you fee that its enough?
grass.grows heya! if you are applying to an art course you should show your life drawing techniques. Are the portraite's and still life drawn from a picture or did you live draw them? if they're from a picture yes you can put them in but i think the interviewers would want to see some actual live life drawing. As i do understand that you have to hand in your portfolio in few days i would ask a friend or a family friend to model for you if they are comfortable to do so.
i personally didn't do life drawing because of religious reasons, i wasn't comfortable with it and I wasn't applying for Art.
but life drawing doesn't have to be about nudes, the models can wear underwear and a tank top.
also if you really don't want to draw people you can draw objects. for me I did the tool kit and the violin as my object live drawing and one was a self portrait of me where I looked in a mirror.
as for how much you need to put it's up to you, if life drawing is your strongest skill put more of it, if it is not then put less of it.
I want to apply too. But I want to get into architecture or art&design. For architecture shpuld it only be about technical drawings and construction or can I include other paintings? And for A&D can I draw whatever I want? Should my portfolio with hand drawings? Or should my portfolio be done in computer? If so, I have no idea on how to draw things on computer! Should I add pictures from the internet and photoshop it on my will? Or do I have to create photoes digitally and then photoshop them? I am very lost. Please help me!
for architecture you can have other paintings or drawings, doesn't all have to be building based or technical drawing.
for art and design show your style and what you are good at. if you think digital art is not your style and you think are not good at it then don't include it. fine art is mostly traditional so don't worry. unless you are applying for graphic design then digital art would be useful.
Thank you! I've also heard that there are portfolio maker app or something. Do you have any idea on this matter?
yes, there are many portolio softwares/apps. however colleges tend to want the portfolio to be presented in traditional paper forum, unless you are applying over seas and cannot physically meet them up for an interview. for digital portfolios it's sometimes good to use powerpoint, adobe products and usually you save it in a PDF format
+TheSuperFunArt yes I am applying abroad. So can I draw pictures and scan them and then photoshop on my own pictures? Or do I have to draw digitally and then photoshop? I would really prefer to draw and scan and thdn photoshop. But I want others opinion on this.
yes, so thats fine you can just scan your work and make it into a PDF document. it's your choice, you can have both digital computer drawings and had drawings.
Would it be a good idea to use coursework from product design? i'm applying to a games design course?
I don't know how the game design application goes but if you did product design i think it would be very useful to show them your work especially the CAD work!
Hey, great video, really informative! I'm new to the art, like a novice, i'm doing art at AS level, and i was wondering like do i need to follow a specific structure? Say for example i was doing a topic on something like people running, how exactly do i show development with that? Do i start by drawing stick figures then building them up bit by bit, or can i also bring in a bunch of other unrelated topics? I don't know much about what the examiners are looking for, if anyone could help, i'd appreciate it! XD
+Mugiwara pk sorry for the late reply i just saw your comment on my video. development is the process that got you to the final peace. for example show that you started with life drawing of people's movements, then your work progressed into researching different drawing techniques such as artist research and soon enough making your pieces better and better though styles.
Hi, your reply would really be helpful for me if you could help! I'm applying for interior design and I really need help in making my portfolio. I searched online and most portfolios for interior design are based in computer design and all that. Is it necessary to have a portfolio based in CD/Microsoft kind of format? Or is it also possible to do a portfolio of just pieces that I have drawn/created,,,? I'm really confused. Worst thing is that I don't have much art background... I'm really lost. But I really want to do interior designing.
Hi enuice. in your porfolio you can have some CAD designs to show off your skills but it's a bad idea to fill in the whole portfolio with CAD when applying to undergraduate course. I am thinking that the examples you looked at were work of people who finished their undergraduate degree or they are applying for MA or they are applying for a job.
as you are applying for an undergraduate course, don't have too much CAD drawings because the university wants to see other things your are good at like hand drawing techniques and model making. I have two second cousins that studied interior design, it's a nice course, my cousins didn't have a background in art either but they they studied in the middle east where why have different rules than in the UK. But usually here in the UK they expect you to have some kind of background in art unless you prove your passion to interior design and you can do that in the interview, your personal statement and the work you chose in your portfolio.
yes, you can make your portfolio based on drawings and things that you made.
the university would like to see developed drawings, thinking process, model making techniques, drawing techniques. if you have a sketchbook bring it in the interview. take a sketchbook in your free time and go around your city drawing things by looking at them like how things are positioned, you can even take photos.
hope this helps :) good luck :)
did you go cheam high?
"Wow some amazing pieces there, this is quite helpful I regret not pursuing Fine Arts instead of BA history." I like the photographs of the apple, egg and marbles/candy? I'm not sure to be exact if 12 photos is the limit for the portfolio or could I add more?
aww, thank you for your kind words :) you can add more than 12 photos. it mostly depends if the place that you are applying to have a limit to how many pages they want in a portfolio. some ask for 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 pages or pieces. I think you should defiantly go for more. maybe aim for 15 to 20 seems like a good number. good luck :)
oh my god! how did it get stolen? but anyway you still have time to make more or recreate your work, and if you photographed your work you can also put it in your portfolio. I've photographed nearly all of my work just in case I lose my portfolio on the train. If you need any more help with your portfolio, don't hesitate to ask :) i'm here to help :D
Hi, thanks for the lovely video, it was really helpful.
I will apply soon for UAL foundation course, but I've never had art classes in my school or private academy and also didn't prepare for the portfolio too. Additionally, my hand drawing skill is poor. I just have nearly 2 months left. Is that possible to prepare all the skills and projects in 2 months..? ( I do have 3 notebooks which I wrote and sketched my ideas and maybe 3 design projects I did in my school.)
hi, UAL is very high and competitive course, they usually expect you to have studied art before hand. I applied to them and sadly didn't get accepted even though I have done three arty subjects. it depends how skilled you are to get that portfolio done. yes, your previous design projects it could help, also try drawing 24/7 and see if you can get into a short portfolio course there are come colleges that do them. I recommend you not to just apply to UAL but to other courses or foundation courses in other universities and colleges too because UAL is highly competitive. good luck.
+TheSuperFunArt you didn't get into UAL, wow i'm scared now
perfect into the point cheers .....
Hi, i'm applying for product design and i am very nervous about a group interview i have next month where i have to create a portfolio which can only be six sheets of work! As I do Fine Art at school and have nothing really product design based, what would you suggest I include? I'm in desperate need of some help as i know nobody who has applied for this course before!
ah, group interviews, they're not actually as bad as they sound. they're more laid back than one to one interview. what happened in my group interview was i went in a room with 4 people, the interviewer sat us down and talked about the course and the facilities. and he would ask us questions such "what is product design" and you have to just put your hand up and answer it and steal the spotlight. in a group interview they usually test your confidence and your knowledge about product design and your enthusiasm.
later the interviewer reminded us about telling us to bring in up to 10 sheets in our portfolio but we all failed that stage and we all got 30 sheets and did not read what he told us, but he said it was okay. so we then brain stormed "what makes a good portfolio" on a paper then we had to all come together in a group and pick 10 pieces all together and make one whole portfolio of 10 pages. later we were told to go on a tour around the uni so he could look at our portfolios, then we came back and he talked to us about what he liked from our personal portfolios, he also got some year 2 students so we can ask them some questions about the course.
the most important thing in a group work is to have some confidence and remember to respond and be talkative and engage in a conversation.
the group interview tests out how we can work as a group, our knowledge about product design and the content in out portfolio.
i know they said bring in 6 sheets of work, but get in your sketchbooks, the interviewer wants to know the materials you use and how you analyse things.
it's alright if you haven't studied product design in your life, there are some people in the course who haven't even studied art, they only studies science and math subjects. and having to study art is very important when it comes to product design too.
maybe in your portfolio you can have some pages of making could be anything from paper lanterns to sculptures, try to also show your drawing skills because that is very important, you can include life drawing, or if you can research 2 point perspective drawing and learn how they are made and draw some buildings or objects.
I also haven't heard anyone who did or does product design it was also something where i researched myself and fell in love with, however in secondary school i used to do design and technology which I loved a lot and I took product design for A-level, however no one really went on a product design course. Also in my culture is more like "you grow up and become a doctor" but i just liked to be different and went with what I liked.
hum... if your school had a section for design technology, or textiles or similar subjects you can ask their teacher for help with your portfolio.
if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask me. even if you want me to look at your portfolio and give you some feedback i'm fine with it, i can inbox you my email.
:)
TheSuperFunArt thank you so much for replying back and being extremely helpful! I know this is something i want to do, having been very indecisive in the past couple of years (and being told to grow up and become a doctor) not knowing what i want to study.. i just don't want to mess it up! I have already asked teachers at my school and nobody really knows what i should include which is a bit of a pain. It would be great if i could get your e-mail so that i could ask some more questions if you don't mind and if it also not too much trouble?
did you apply for product design?
yes i did
have you ended up studying it at university? if so which one?
yes, i ended up studying at university, but i don't tell people which one for privacy reasons.
it's nice of you to think that about my video :)
The portfolio has to be of size A1 right?
Hi, I used an A2 Portfolio here :)
Do you do music art cuz I want you to design my mixtape
no, but i can play 'Mary had a little lamb' on the piano :)
Is the bag HAVE TO be such a big size(A1) or not? i think it's very waste of space? Also, not easy to carry and keep.
minna cho hi. My portfolio is A2 size. Personally I found A1 is way big for me. For art and foundation they enjoy a1. For graphic design or product design a2 or A3 would be fine.
TheSuperFunArt Thank you for your answer ^^
I never took any art subjects at all, and i would wish to get to a uni/college for product design. Any tips on what i could do and how can i start? Like for my portfolio and stuff. thanks
hey, what i recommend if you are in year 13 then to try to apply to an art foundation course. it is a one year course that will teach you more about product design and art and will help you make a portfolio. you can also join some portfolio courses in the summer that will help you make some artwork for your portfolios, universities and collages do it, check their websites.
if you are in year 12 you can either take AS Art when you are in year 13 so you have something in your portfolio, unless if you want to reset the year or want to do the whole alevel in one year, it's your choice according to the time you have. and try to beg your teaches if they can allow you do do Alevel art.
in your UCAS application, for the personal statement try to make it as best as you can to show your passion towards the subject. also mention some designers that interest you and why. you can go to product design exhibitions when they pop up and you can say "i like to go to design exhibitions such as____/ i went to few design exhibitions such as_____" also the subjects you are currently taking, try to say how they can help with product design. such you can say "i took physics and maths and they can help me with measurements" something like that.
personally my sister didn't do any art subjects in her Alevels but she worked hard during her free time to make some sketches and models and she got into architecture. she also watched many videos on youtube to teach her stuff, so you can do that.
you don't have to have pages as much as I do, I have Alot of pages tbh, try to maybe have 10 pages if you like and try to put some "product design" within the pages. maybe design a lantern with card, show some "prototyping/ making" skills and some drawing skills and some development skills.
i know that universities do some expectations according to your passion towards the subject. when they give you an interview they will talk to you to get to know you so you can express your passion.
if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask, I'm here to help:)
thank you so much! I hope i get a good grade as well!
What is the size of the paper ???
rachel horsford I'm pretty sure they're A2
I never took any art subjects at gcse and I'm going to do a levels but I can't take any of the art ones because of that. But there is a computer game design course I would like to do that requires a portfolio and I'm so lost xD any advice since I don't take any art subjects at all so I have nothing at all to show :c
Aminah Saleem hi, i would recommend you to find other sixth form colleges around you that could accept you to do art. or you can just talk to the teacher and show you how much you want to take art.
For me me I did GCSE Art but then I moved schools and I didn't want to do art in a level, then in the second month of alevel I felt like quitting one of my subjects and do art so i went to the art teacher in our school and begged him that i wanted to do art so he trialed me for 2 weeks (even though i did get an A for GCSE art), he gave me so much work and he told me if i can do such amount of work within these two weeks he will accept me in the course. so you can do something similar. Go and talk to the art teacher because this is your future and it will be a shame if art is something you are passionate about and want to have an art career and you are not allowed to do art for not choosing a subject when you were 14.
Aminah Saleem You can always consider taking extra lessons outside of your school.
I would bring some photos of the product to go with the certificate
***** yes, that's a good advise.
i ran out of space at the time, but i did however upload some images of the products on an online portfolio for a college I applied to.
is this for undergrad ?
+keepcalmanduseyahoomailAT THERATEgmailDOTcom yes, this is undergrad :)
i went to many interviews for graphic design vacancy job but one boss said my artwork look like kindergarten but how to show them best artwork. Is it necessary to show the drawing pencil to them since they are for graphic using computer design like photoshop illustrator
+Gabriel Chang i would recomend you not to follow this portfolio example if you are applying for a job because this portfolio is meant to be to apply to a university course or foundation year.
for job portfolio the layout has to be professional, show final work, no pencil drawings. everything has to be digital or if you are doing hand work have it inked in and you can photoshop it too.
the boss that told you your work looks like kindergarden work is meant to explain why he feels your work the way he thinks it is. there has to be an explination to why he would think that. if he hasnt explined his comment it means he is ignorent a doesnt apreciate art.
keep following your dreams and trying to apply to as much design jobs as you can and dont let that ignorent comment from that boss let you down.
Thank you sorry I was first time trying to find where the comment in UA-cam I can comment ho until now I just find the comment so I can reply your comment. Thanks even thought show as many artwork. Do you mean show those artwork which I design myself simply take anything poster and think creative design? Or just redid show the one I did on final project on thesis in college?
dont have as much as you can, put quality first. put your best pieces. if you have some things that you think are a good idea but you havent presented it well, redo it and make it better. yes show the stuff you did in university and if you took any internships put that in.
Ok thanks ha.. No wonder it's like this just press the word and reply
I have just sent him the artwork portfolio I did in final presentation college put in log book for thesis but he said: "Im sorry mr.. Actually i found some graphic designer already.. About your application your portfolio not really that convincing.. If u have more convincing design which u work. I would might consider it.. Email me if u have it.." ha how to have a convincing portfolio? Like design put all those college artwork corporate identity rebranding logo design in a html website? I still don't know why when I sent email to parent show them the website I design but fail nothing appear. Why like this
I was asked to upload my portfolio in Flickr. Is there any possible way no one can see it or find it except through a link? I don't want my work to be public.
hi, yes I had some universities ask me to upload on flicker too. unfortunately i didn't find a way to make them private.
also when they asked me to submit on flicker one of the requirements was to make it public. my recommendation is if your flicker account has past pictures that you don't want the uni to see or your friends to see your portfolio is make another flicker account, upload your portfolio but don't put any hash tags so your portfolio is less likely to be seen by strangers, when you get a reply from the uni about your offer you can then delete the images and account
thanks, you helped a lot :) i found an option where it said not to be found from search machines such as google. But yet my portfolio is public for flickr users.
How dud you print?
hey, my sixthform offered us free printing, i just printed on normal printer paper.
Hi!)) I love your works!) I want to go to graphic design school but I dont have any appropriate experience I even dont have any portfolio but I want to be enrolled SOOOO much. This is my dream))Maybe you could give me advice. I dont know what will be good for my portfolio.
hi tanya :)
do you have any art experience? in your Alevel or GCSE?
you can put that in your portfolio, also some drawings that you might had done in your own time.
for graphic design they are looking for editing skills such as the usage of Photoshop or or a similar program. they are also looking at the usage of materials, development and drawing skills.
you can always also apply to go to a foundation art year where they will teach you more about graphic design and drawing and will help you make a portfolio especially for graphic design and you will also get more ucas points on the way.
there are also some "protfolio" classes some unis make where it is a 5 or 10 day course (1 or 2 weeks) where they do something different everyday like life drawing, usage of materials and such and you can put that in your portfolio. the portfolio lessons are usually free, also the foundation year is free if you join when your are under 19 years of age.
try to make your personal statement very strong and show how passionate you are to take the subject.
to get you started get a paper and list all things that relate to graphic design. such as: t-shirt design, book illustration, packaging, package labelling, poster design, logo..... make a huge list. then pick few of them and try to make some designs.
lets say you chose packaging... try to make few pages for initial ideas, then develop your idea/design/s then show a final outcome. this will show your developing skills.
...also experiment with designing and making your plans and final outcomes by hand on paper and by computer.... this will show usage of materials.
hope that helped :)
Oh thank you very much for answer!!)) Your advices are really helpful. Unfortunately I have nothing to show.
How much time it will take to create a portfolio from the beginning? I want to go to American art & design university. Is it possible to get there if you dont have much money? I am an international student and by myself. Actually it seems unrealizable especially for foreigners.
tanya k hey, i mean you can always take extra years to take an art or graphic design course if you like.
as for the time it takes to make a portfolio it all depends on how fast you can work. my sister went to do architecture but she didn't do any art related subjects for her Alevels so she made a portfolio within 2/3 weeks. but she took time off school to make the work and stayed up long hours, she also put some work she did from her GCSE art and she made a lot of drawings and sculptures in her free time, so it is possible to make it within few weeks from scratch.
unfortunately you have to have to money to go to university. i don't know if USA has student finance/loan, but in the UK they have student finance for home and eu students so you can basically get into uni for free then pay back the money when you get a job when you had finished uni. but they don't give it to international students.
there is a possibility to get into uni with a scholarship, but it's hard.
if you feel you need to get more money and more experience so you can get to your dream uni, i would recommend you to take a year studying graphic design/ art subject in a college and taking a part time job or find a uni that might be close by and accepts you. most unis are actually bothered about ucas points at the end.
there isn't really much of a rush to get into uni, in my class there are people from 18 year olds to 35.
you can also wait until results day and check for clearance, many unis would just accept because they might have a shortage of students and would just accept anyone.
wow. so helpful. thank you!
Lina Y glad i could help :)
Thats simply awesome..... But still I Wanna See your face, your real working tools (those of digitals...) NO OFFENCE but this wat my DAD ever helped me for my first assignment during my highschool days..... THIS IS HELPLESS so far;show ur full clips if it is... so THE WORLD AGREES...

what is your accent?
well I am british and arabic and I lived in the middle east for a part of the time where their english accent is american and the other part of my time i lived in the UK so i have this slight of a british accent, I also speak arabic. so all this results my accent being very messed up! lol (and that's some history about me :))

I really want to do this n want to get in the school. i can draw really well and have drawing made with charcoal pencils. can u guide me how to make a portfolio for graphic designing? (need help badly) plzz respond ASAP
hey ur works are amazing! i think i need ur advice if you dun mind. thanq =)
hi, thanks! glad you liked my work! yes, go ahead, ask me anything, I am here to help :)
do i need to submit all my aS and a2 works? actlly i want to apply for International Preparation for Fashion and they want a portfolio so i just wanted an idea. thank you.
it's a nice idea to have a good range of your AS and A2 but i would go with the best work Ive done in the last two years so far, Don't put all of it, it will be too much, the uni usually tells you how many pages you might need some ask for 10 some ask for 20. i wouldn't really give them work from my GCSEs or anything earlier. I would also include work that you did at home that were not part of your studies but something you did at home as a hobby to show that you are able to do more than what they want and how much you like the subject.
Thank You so very much
yeah, i don't mind seeing your work and giving you feedback :)
you sound exactly like chiwithac
I like your accent!
