Paul Verhoeven is really into theology and attends seminars and such and his movies are full of allegory, but interestingly he is not actually religious.
He has described himself as a atheïst Jesus-fan.

@@terryfuldsgaming7995 the problem with Athirst + crowd like yourself do not understand is this. When the Christian's broke away from Jewish tradition and founded Catholicism. They kept the old Torah known as the Old Testament. Sort of as a warning/knowledge of the original sins caused by their Jewish Ancestry. The New Testament are the four gospels and works by the Dispiles of Christ.
It's more of a acknowledgement of that yes, in some cases mixing theology with governance leads to bad things. Often this was chided in the early church (Before the papacy lost all governing power). It still somewhat a vision still held by Catholics and Christian's that people have faults and can be redeemed.

@AmeriFolksFellow V-M. Rhaefnhyrst see the thing with Paul Verhoeven is that he doesn't strife to give the masses or the big wigs what they want , his work is meant to be be a challenge and is often hedonistic as a reaction to performative prudishness in society.
He came to the US because he felt Dutch film boards that the industry rely on here for subsidies were too limiting.
His American work is a critique of America from a european lens, starship troopers is calling out latent fascism.
I think Paul sees himself more as chasing the money lenders away, willing to burn bridges to get to the truth.

There was actually an episode of the RoboCop TV series that I remember where the gun could only be fired by RoboCop, as there's a scene where some guy picks it and tries to fire it but the gun won't work. This is the original RoboCop design like in the first three films though, isn't DNA coded but more likely electronically... plus I'm not sure how canon the TV series even is.

It was secretly filmed by a shitty camera in german cinema and dubbed over by a single guy monotonously reading the script in my native language. That was the only way you could watch these "western movies" in communist countries, because they were banned. My dad was ripping and selling these tapes on the black market as a teenager. He got caught and almost went to jail for VHS piracy, but fortunately his uncle was a chief of police and bailed him out.

That's why i love a lot of sci fi, it deals with those questions of what is humanity, how much can you strip away before it ceases to be human. And aparently the power people get from their faith, because i missed that completely in robocop. You can attack the church for what some priests do, deconstruct the entire bible and say it's illogical, but it's undeniable that many people draw strength from their beliefs and it makes them better people. Sci fi portrays that like nothing else and i love it.

One of the most interesting videos. Before watching it I expected it to be about Catholics believing in the resurrection of the dead, which makes Alex Murphy accept his own “resurrection” easier. Didn’t know Catholics looked at suicide that way.

    • @Liandra24
      @Liandra24 4 роки тому

barkeep312 it is much more complicated than that. We really hate suicide that is not a sacrifice for others. I think I am saying it wrong, but basically suicide for suicides sake is not looked kindly at. It has been looked at now that we have a more deeper understanding of how suffering can lead a person to suicide, so it really depends and only God has the last judgment on considering the person’s reason for ending their life. Dante’s book Inferno has the old view of how suicide was considered bad, and that is what people usually think of in reference when talking about Catholics and suicide. The movie Constantine is an example of how the old Catholic views on suicide is mainly thought of in media.

The fact that Murphy was marked for death right from the beginning by OCP (rather than his death just being a convenient accident) is explicitly stated by Bob Morton in an early scene, right after ED 209 fucks up in the boardroom and he's telling the Old Man how quickly he can get the RoboCop program operational, he says "we've already placed prime candidates according to risk factor".
Translated from corporate euphemism speak, he's saying "we've already found some people who'd probably cope with being forced into a robot shell, now we're making it as likely as possible that they get killed"
I'm always surprised that no one seems to pick us on this, it's the most chilling line in the film, and a perfect illustration of the anti-corporate message, yet it goes by so fast!
Ah, I just remembered later on.."he signed the release forms when he joined the force, we can do pretty much whatever we want" - you literally have to give up ownership of your mortal remains to get a reasonable paying job in this universe!
Unquestionably one of the most thoughtful and clever films ever made. Paul verhoeven is a goddamn genius (plus ed neumeier, the same writer he worked with on starship troopers).

The part where RoboCop keeps the hand in the 2014 reboot makes sense when you take in account that the Keaton character basically WANTED a man in a robot suit whereas OCP in the original RoboCop didn‘t want him to be a man at all.
Also, they meant the face being cold when RoboCop told Murphy‘s wife „they did that to honor him“. If the face was „fake“, why bother including the bullet hole or why even use Murphy‘s face at all? His original face was put on a metallic skull IMO.
Aaaaand I don’t think the rudimentary digestive system is made of „original parts“ from Murphy.
I also think the fact that half of Murphys brain sprayed all over the floor makes it even more special to the audience and unexpected to his OCP creators that he more and more returns to be Murphy again, with most or even all of his memories intact.

A couple of things, I think in robocop 2 the new versions of robocop killed themselves bc they had more human parts. The one you showed had a Full human skull. The other had a full human head. Also Alex may not have killed himself out of a sense of vengeance and justice. He became a golem. Going after the men that killed him. We don't know how the 2 suicide robocops died.

MY gripe with the Old Robocop (chill i know it's satire) is that they say things like Robocop is the ultimate fusion of human and machine, with unprecedented reflexes, skill, and accuracy.
What we get instead is a slow smack-talking clanker that can barely walk downstairs and takes half an hour to aim his gun.
The 2014 robocop got it right from that perspective - meld a trained human's mind with top-tier cybernetics and you get an absolute CYBER-F-ING-NINJA

  • @FrJacobSJ

@Fact Fiend - With Karl Smallwood, I wanted to comment here for two reasons I thought you would appreciate:
    1) I have the same last name as RoboCop's nemesis in the first movie.
    2) I am a Catholic priest.
I appreciate you bringing to light something I didn't know about RoboCop. I would say that the Church doesn't quite teach that suicide is one of the worst sins a person can commit, though in more ancient times it was likely seen in a far more negative light. Now with a better understanding of the role that psychological illness and intense suffering can play in a person's decision to take their own life, the Church teaches in the Catechism:
2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.
2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.
2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.
Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.
2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.
If Murphy was as devout as you say, according to the expanded universe, I would posit a different theory as to his resistance to taking his own life. Rather than a fear of hell because of suicide, it could perhaps be the Catholic understanding of suffering. In our religious tradition we see a redemptive value to suffering, that suffering can actually be good for the soul and unite one closer to Jesus, who suffered for our salvation. I'd bet Murphy went to a Catholic school, nuns and all, and grew up with the philosophy of "offer it up" whenever he suffered or struggled, which was the notion of offering your suffering for souls in purgatory. It could very well have been his Catholic perspective on suffering itself that allowed him to gradually accept his new reality. Just some thoughts your video got moving in my head, in case you'd like to buy them for a dollar.

Fr. Jacob Boddicker, SJ thanks for this, it expands on my knowledge of a conversation I learned in catechism that of a child asked the pope about what would happen to her father’s soul as he had committed suicide, and the pope had said something along the lines of considering the long suffering of the girl’s father, he would be welcomed to heaven.

He fought back as hard as he could but the real triump was literally his human side. He shot him with his real hand. The hand they left him to shake hands. The "gift" they allowed him to keep was the undoing of ocp. His humanity.
