Nice video! Just to say from your video description, it wasn't built BY the Normans, it was built by the IRISH to defend against the Normans after they invaded! It's an O'Mahony castle, who were nobility from South Ireland and used to rule most of what is now County Cork. They were from the Eóganachta dynasty that were kings of all Munster for 800 years. But their dynasty was deep in decline having spent years fighting Vikings, rival Irish warlords and eventually the Normans. They were very navy orientated and got wealthy trading and taxing their harbors, so built 12 castles around the south coast of Ireland to help defend their land, most of them in a lot more populated areas and by ports and bays. It's one of the first castles built by the Irish at all - previously the Irish would build mostly wooden hill fort type defenses of varying size (much like most early medieval populations did). With the shock and awe of Normans cutting into the country, this castle could be likened to 'Helms Deep' (the Riders of Rohans last defense fantasy castle from Lord of the Rings). This was very much a last defense for their existence if it came to it. The lake is walled, cliffs on either side and a narrow path through hilly terrain would put any army attacking this spot at a huge disadvantage. Allowing even a small garrison to hold off a much larger force, just as the small force of Spartans and other Greeks held off the vast army of Persians at Thermopylae. And indeed, it must have worked, the Normans never defeated this castle - nor did they manage to take over the lands of South west Munster in general. South west Munster were some of the last Irish royal families to eventually bend their knee to the English after hundreds of years and many rebellions.
Yes great info. I may just have TO rekindle that old proud O'Mahoney banner once more as a ruling kingdom in this new game I am making. Any suggestions on if they would more prefer their main keep located down near the central seas, or a bit higher up towards those scenic mountain pines..? :)
You always find the coolest places. I live in the oldest city in my country, (St. Augustine, Florida) and am so jealous of you - America really is so young.
Come to India theres are thousands of castles both small.. medium big n enormous.. you'll be astonished by their beauty architecture designs etc... that have withstood the test of time some over a thousands of years etc etc... most n majority of european castles are plain simple n boring....
@@truth6871 There are tens of thousands of castles in Europe with thousands of years of history. There are even regions named after the abundance of castles (Castille in Spain). If you think they are "plain simple n boring" you have just not researched enough and you are falling into stereotypes. Moreover, a castle is a defensive structure made for war, so it is not meant to be decorated, but strong. If you are looking for pretty buildings, then they are just palaces or chateaus, with less history, and I tell you those are the boring ones.
Thanks for sharing a place that I will never go but you brought me there as if I was there in person. I am Irish and love the old castles. It makes you wonder what the castle looked like back in the day, and who lived there. I'm sure it was huge.
Thank you! It’s quite muddy on the way there so bring appropriate shoes. It’s not signposted so make sure you have a vague idea of the direction by using Google maps. Worth a visit.
Man, I'd love to visit the Irish countryside one day. You just don't find this stuff in America! And if you do, it's already been turned into a tourist trap.
All i was thinking of the whole time was Skyrim xD especially with the way the remains of the castle looked. And even with the iron gates covering the door. And with the mountain and the lake and ocean n stuff. Everything about this looked like Skyrim
I just went to explore it. The first castle is about the same as well as the second one that’s closer to the water. The third one that’s in between the others however, has an open window that you can squeeze through. Once inside you can walk up about 15 spiral steps to get to the top and see an amazing view. I wouldn’t trust the floor on the top though.
Hi Demc7. Wonderful video!! magical place. is this castle still in ruinous state? Could you tell me if you know who owns it and if you have heard that one day it could be restored? Thank you
Interesting video! But why did you think it was booby trapped, or that the inner courtyard was a graveyard when it was just full of normal rock debris?
Heres the wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunlough_Castle This is pretty interesting too: www.ireland-highlights.com/sight/Three_Castle_Head_mizen-peninsula.html
But.. what all did they use TO make fire in all their ovens & fireplaces ?? Because I don't see ANY trees around thereabouts for like a mile or more... O_O
Also I bet that would be a cool place to go metal detecting ^_^

4:22 murder hole. Defenders would use that to rain death down on attackers who managed to get into the tower.

You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
This would be astounding. I live in the US but seeing and exploring a castle from hundreds of years ago would be awesome
Beautiful ruins .Thaks for sharing this . I have waited along time for this .
Lovely footage. The ocean view at 7:10 is simply
a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
That's more of a wall than a castle, but none the less it's still a pretty cool find.
this is the best video I could find about this amazing old castle. Thanks for posting this. Any advice to someone who might visit someday?
Thank you! It’s quite muddy on the way there so bring appropriate shoes. It’s not signposted so make sure you have a vague idea of the direction by using Google maps. Worth a visit.

I wonder what the rent-pe-month for staying there would run a bloke..?

*"I don't trust these old iron locks in these castles 'cause there could be traps anywhere. But let's go in anyway"*

It was built in 1207, the 13th century, not the 12th
Actually it was built in 1983 the year of the rattle snake 🐍

Just subbed. Awesome video! Real video, no Hollywood bs.
I went to a castle in North Scotland called Urquhart Castle which is similar to this one. Its nicely kept, not abandoned.
Cha J. Saint that’s right off Loch Ness if I’m not mistaken.

Amazing. I’d like to go back there with a drone one day, although with the wind and the nearby cliff it could be challenging.
was it just apart of one big castle they looked like they were connected by a wall at some point
Such a cool exploration! Loved the video :) subbing to you and cant wait to see more :)
Thank you so much 😁

nice find! what is the annoying scratchy noise? i can hear it through most of the video, sounds like a hard drive running or a dodgy case fan.
+mupps420 sound of a working DSLR camera (video mode)
What do you mean at 3:00 there could be traps anywhere?
Hahaha I thought the same thing!

My family on my mother’s side O’Mahony (original name of Irish Immigrant Families Mahoney/Mahony) built in defense against the Normans!
Yes, you've found the castle of Conner McCleod of the clan McCleod.
But.. what all did they use TO make fire in all their ovens & fireplaces ?? Because I don't see ANY trees around thereabouts for like a mile or more... O_O
That's why, they used all the wood.
@@carloscarvalho1441 lol is that true?
@@veng3r663 They used grass, cow dung, hay, twigs, etc. It isn't the coldest winters over there like in Northern USA or Canada.
God, that's beautiful. I wonder what it was used for.
+Zero that spider got me lol

Did people actually live in these castles?
why didnt u climb up top it looked reachable
looks like the coasts in Oregon
That is one castle with three towers. Not 3 separate castles
It's Dunlough Castle. It's very old, as you can tell by how primitive the stonework is.
Yamada Leon?
If only those walls could talk.
So relaxing
Hi…..thanks.... Nice stuff....I like it see ya'. *john

God sake
Your house is a fucking historic momument
why didn't you just... I don't know... UNLATCH THE DOORS... they're not even locked. wtf?
I leave mean comments: maybe he thought the door was old and that if he opens it-it would break?
