When Yasu spoke to Gaap about a mystery novel, they referred to mystery novels being somewhat like a game; if you solve it before the story ends, you win, if not, you lose, but if you take away the ending then it becomes a fantasy story. If Clair = Yasu and the fragment Lion exists in is an example of Clair's fantasising of a world where they never had to live as Clair then this whole scenario is symbolism for Yasu's desire to have an ending or for someone to solve the mysteries they were devising themself. Yasu is struggling to fight for a happy ending but if there is an ending, it is no longer a fantasy, it's a mystery. If Yasu doesn't want a tragic ending, they will perpetuate the story so that it remains a fantasy without ending, if Yasu wants a happy ending, someone has to solve the mystery. "Please uncover the truth, that is my only wish."
Virgilia clarified that Magic exists to make people happy, this is half-true. Magic exists when people are happy. The final riddle of EP8 "Magic or Trick" dictates the endings because it comes down to whether or not one is willing to acknowledge the ending. It's often assumed that "Magic or Trick" is asking "Does Magic exist?" But the bottom line, as far as the question is concerned, is that magic exists regardless. Magic is the outcome, Trick is the method. Will you settle on an outcome, an ending the concludes the mystery, or will you stay inside of an unending fantasy?

I thought Will would jump in between Kyrie and Lion, beat Kyrie and save Lion, kinda like what Ange did in episode 3. But nope, he just straight up cut the universe in half.
I still maintain that Will was holding back. He could've easily used most of if not all of Van Dine's rules, but that would've compromised the gameboard, and that would have been the same as denying Lion a happy ending.
its not like will was trying to refute the board, he was only trying to refute the ending. He even said afterwards "we're gonna survive and make a Happy end" so Willard stood up to Bern to change a miracle into a happy ending, What a fucken boss
ShadowBaofu I disagree. I think the point with this whole scene here, and the manga seems to back this up, is that this is no longer a gameboard, no longer a mystery, and no longer fiction- Therefore, rules designed for literature, such as Van Dine's 20, are absolutely meaningless against it.
ShadowBaofu Well, whether or not you believe the Metaworld is real, I'd say it's safe to assume that Bernkastel's claims, no matter how cruel or wretched, are reality. Yasu really was trapped in an inescapable torment, and the family was at such dire straits each and any one of them would become a killer- And it really was Lion's destiny to be murdered by Kyrie. However, at this point in time, Lion hadn't been killed yet, as Bernkastel placed him back in time before Kyrie could kill him, so there was still hope, so Willard wasn't fighting a hopeless battle. Unfortunately, Willard wasn't prepared for the type of battle he was drawn into, but continued anyway, because the culprit deserved some form of happy ending. ...at least, that's my analysis. (Also, fuck yeah Persona 2!)
I think the "Care for it while it's alive and eat its guts after it dies" is an allusion to how cats (and dogs) tend to scavenge on the dead bodies of their owners.
Saber, I mean, Lion x Will FTW! Oh and talking about Fate, Rudolf = Kiritsugu (F/Z), Kyrie = Caster (F/SN), Beatrice = Irisviel (F/Z), Rosa = Caren (Fate/Hollow Ataraxia).
I feel like there's a contradiction in this scene when Bernkastel says the murders would have happened the same way. 1. Kinzo makes the epitaph and his children solve it. He could still say no take backs sense he's still alive. 2. How would they know about the bomb on the island if the one who showed the adults the bomb was Yasu? 3. If Yasu put the guns on the table in the "true" scenario, then why would they be in the same area in Lion's scenario? Kinzo is still alive and would probably not be stupid enough to put the guns in reach of his children where they can start shooting each other. I'm basically wondering, where the hell would Rudolf and Kyrie get the guns to shoot everyone. I just think Bern's reasoning for the scenario to end up the same for Lion is just a way to spite Claire more than anything else and she did what Erika did in EP 5 where the lie can become the truth if you couldn't prove it. Since Bernkastel was the one that found Lion's world, she probably made that shit up.
Feels like Umineko has an awful lot of contradictions or weird things... the only consistent stuff seems to be the individual episodes and the truth behind each individual murder scenario.
I'm just waiting for someone to explain this perfect world and why it still ends up in the murder of everyone despite all the important pieces not being present. I still get "the family is so fucked up they resorted to murder still." It doesn't seem to work if Kinzo has something to live for. No one is stupid to put guns on a table for a massacre especially if Kinzo is trying to keep Lion alive.
GintaxAlvissforever A common theory is that Rudolf and Kyrie had always planned on massacring the family, which is why they didn't bring Battler or Ange. However, my personal theory is simply that the guns were the ones in Kinzo's collection, which the family had used in previous Episodes.
***** It still seems counterproductive for them because if they survived while everyone else died, that makes things too easy and would make the other two miserable but whatever on Kyrie's end. The thing about the guns is that in almost all scenarios, the parents had a way of getting the guns usually because a.) They worked for Yasu therefore could easily be handed the gun (like Rosa) b.) Natsuhi/Krauss live in the mansion therefore would know where the guns are. In this scenario, people who have only been in the mansion like once a year would suddenly know where the guns are to shoot everyone? That's what bugs me a lot. And Kinzo placing them there is suicide because he would never put Lion in danger in this universe. And I honestly doubt they packed their own guns from home just to shoot everyone without getting caught.
GintaxAlvissforever Hmm. Good point. I'm still unsure of how it happened, but I'm not quite convinced of your "Bern lied" hypothesis. A lie can only become truth if it's outcome matches the lie: For example, Maria and Beatrice's cup story could have become truth because the result was clearly magic. However, Lion being attacked by a gun-wielding Kyrie is an outcome that necessitates some form of Kyrie obtaining a gun. and Lion witnessed it, so that can't be a lie too...
So, wait a second. If there's a world where Lion exists, would there be a world where Claire is thrown off the cliff and actually dies? I feel like those would be pretty common.
Siren Though, would the epitaph fiasco have happened if nobody forced their hand? Somehow, I doubt it. On that note, if the sea of fragments is truly endless, then I'm guessing there's at least one world where any given member of the family solves the riddle first. I wonder if any of those end differently.

I'm not so sure about that myself. Van Dine's first is undoubtedly the strongest and it allegedly had no effect.
