As far as i understand it Fascism was a reaction to Liberalism and Christianity. It’s more of a “Smash in case of emergency” tool to protect capital than a branch of Liberalism itself
I don’t think liberalism is fascism on bad times, I think liberals belief they oppose fascism deep down. But the incentives of liberalism mean they’ll always favor capital and order over anything threatening that order. For the liberal order and empire are greater than justice, ergo it is susceptible to allying with fascism where convenient. I think liberals end up fascist because their world view is inconsistent ultimately. But yea functionally the two are the same given the right circumstances.

The Democrats are considered to be left wing in the US while in other countries their policies would be considered center-right in other European countries. While the Republicans would be in other nations considered to be a far-right political party. Also what is considered to be a centrist position is also different in the Us a support for hyper-individualism, unfettered free markets, and support for capital punishment is considered sane at home, but extreme in most other countries. Even intellectual thinkers that succeed in the US would be considered extreme take success of thinkers like Ayn Rand who is considered a great thinker in the US while other nations would consider her ideas to be insane. The Us is also the only country that does not have a major electoral party that was founded on the labor movement which makes the US out of touch with the rest of the world.

I used to think arguments like the one in this video were exaggerated and simplistic. I thought, surely the history of liberalism is more morally complex than this. No doubt there have been many villains in this history, but what about all the heroes? But the more I find out about the history, the more horrified I am, and the more I realize that, if anything, this argument understates the matter. For example, when you read the details of how Britain destroyed the Indian textile industry -- plunging the people into poverty -- in order to replace it with British textiles (often imitating Indian styles), it's truly galling. Far from being about "free trade," it was exactly the opposite: the use of British power to suppress free trade for the sake of the Empire and its wealth, no matter the cost.
The same was true of the Soviet Union's (and Combloc in general, I believe) industries after its collapse. Especially in the Baltics. Productions, workshops, industrial sites were bought out not for the purpose of investing in them, modernization and production, but to shut it down and destroy the competitor.
Hakim, I'm not sure if you're going to see this comment but... Thank you. You (and the deprogram lads) have helped saved my life. Genuinely. I come from an insanely rich family in Canada. My dad is a multimillionaire who made his fortunes in the oil and gas industry. I've struggled with profound and crippling mental illness my whole life, but in the context of my upbringing, was only able to blame myself for my predicament in as many morally condemnatory ways as I could muster. I have had nothing but supreme material comfort my entire life, but in spite of having unlimited access the one thing that we have used to rob the rest of world of a dignified life, I have never, ever, been happy or content. Under the conditions I grew up in, in spite of the "success" of my family (even though my parents were always abusive to each other, including myself), I don't think I ever could have prevented myself from hating myself in this way. In being raised within the ideological confines of liberalism, to even consider that you may be a part of a larger social fabric that you don't have complete control over is considered one of the most heinous moral crimes. Why? In doing so you're not taking "personal accountability" for yourself. How can I be personally accountable to the fact that I probably have ADHD (according to the health professionals I am seeing now) and probably have some small level of psychosis? Liberal capitalism, not just as an economic system but even as an ideology, is inherently ablest. About 10 years ago in seeing the sorts of neurotic and deluded lives most people around me live, I made a conscious decision in myself that it is better to be a temporary hypocrite as you come to understand the material consequences of your individual life and choices, than to exist in complete denial of your external influence on the world. Well here I am now just coming to realize this is a reasonably Marxist outlook to have. I have always had a pessimistic outlook on life, not so much due to how I view other people, but more so as a response to the conditions I was born into. Whenever I would share my outlook on others I would almost always be bombarded with the same fantastical response: "Don't worry! The free market and science solves all problems!". Utter ideological nonsense. My pessimism only grew as I came to major in earth sciences and came to know in concrete detail just how f***** we have made this planet, and trust me, it is SO much worse than you think. Frankly, I found it quite astonishing that most of the students and even most of my professors didn't take it as the clear existential threat it obviously is. Nobody could deny the science of it, of course, but everyone seemingly did want to deny the severity of the issue in spite of the facts. I have been so much more open now with the way I feel and how I conceptualize things in my life. Witnessing the obvious G-side of Palestine has compelled me in ways I can't completely control to speak on these issues. But, without fail, in every single conversation I have had around issues like climate change, nuclear war, and Palestine, I eventually get the response "well, you know, there's nothing you can do about it.". To me, this is a casual and hilarious admission that we don't live in anything approaching a functional democracy. Not only this, but why else is there "nothing you can do?" Well, because socialism is EVIL, of course! And not only is it evil, it's even WORSE than fascism. How can anyone actually believe this? When the H man says he's gonna gas all the J's and goes on to do just that, there is no mystery there. It's the face of evil in its purest form. At some nonsensical and arbitrary point everyone here seems to come to the conclusion that too much social progress eventually becomes evil socialism. Shouldn't you at least take a moment to understand what socialism, Marxism, and communism are from their own philosophical conceptions of things before you try and critique them? Well, apparently not. The fact that we don't even get socialism right in our critique of it, in my mind, disproves the entire ideological underpinning of liberalism, the political ideology that foolishly claims to have complete authority over all reality. I had a complete psychotic break from reality last spring due to family trauma and abject horror over what has been happening in Palestine since Oct. 7th, and frankly, I take that as a badge of honour. The attitudes I've seen towards this conflict by the people I know are almost more disturbing to me on a personal level than the fact of everything Isreel is doing right now. Almost everyone I know denies the G-side in some way, even through attitudes as small as willful ignorance and not wanting to pay attention. I have spent a lot of time in my life wondering how my family might react if they were in Germany in the 30's and 40's.... Well, now I know. In majoring in the natural sciences I was absolutely dumbfounded by our complete empirical and scientific knowledge of the material world around us. Humans are nothing if not insanely capable problem solvers. Becoming a socialist has given me incredible hope for the future where I used to have none. Why? Because I believe in the human race and our capacity to solve problems. There is virtually no issue in science that, even if it can't be solved completely, can't at least be constrained through empirical scientific study. If problems faced in any issue aren't being solved, it's an issue of how the problems are conceptualized and the paradigm they exist in. At this point it is quite clear that liberal capitalism is the single largest problem to be overcome. Perhaps we won't solve this problem - with the dire straights we are in and the evil and rapidly increasing imperialist warmongering of the US and it allies (like my stoopid f'n country), I could see that coming to pass. In fighting for something better in solidarity with other people who understand what is going on, I hope I'll at least be able to tell myself that I actually did something concrete about it for the rest of my life. The last thing I want is a wasted live, jerking off and playing video games as the fabric of reality collapses around me. Oh my god, sorry for the length of this comment. Peace and love to you Hakim. If you are doing your part, I believe it's acceptable and even morally correct to shelter yourself from some realities. Past a certain point subjecting ourselves to more and more evidence of the violence being inflicted on innocents can be detrimental. It can affect our mental health severely and leave us in despair and in a feeling of lack of agency that can be counterproductive to our struggle. Do what you can to advance the cause, but also take care of yourself. And if you have access to money there's a lot you can do already. Fund organizations and get organized.
@@tasfa10 I completely agree with you. I have almost completely avoided looking at ground level footage in Gaza since Oct. because I know what seeing it will do to me. I have only seen a few clips of raw footage on the ground in Gaza and I still can't get what I saw out of my head. Yes absolutely, you can't be aware of everything all the time, but for some issues and crimes against humanity an unwillingness to peel back the curtain and look at what's going on (like this one) can absolutely fuel things. However, being paralyzed into inaction out of fear or discontent is solves nothing.

Liberalism is a wolf in sheep's clothing. If you look at Liberal theory, many consider it to be the philosophy which best embodies emancipatory values - humanism, freedom, etc. And yet, when we look at Liberalism is practice, it frequently adopts conservative (or even reactionary) positions, both at home and abroad, clearly opposing those alleged values. The little crumbs that we, as the working class, have managed to gain in our continuous process for emancipation, were always opposed by conservative Liberals of that time. These gains are only allowed to materialize because they allow popular unrest to be put to bed - for a time. And yet, other forms of oppression, domination, and privilege go on unscathed.

47:36 - nah man, this is a bit of a limited understanding. it's way worse than u think - for all of us. sure, the global north will be equipped to preserve itself a bit longer, but it's kind of meaningless in the context of worldwide collapse of agriculture and the subsequent shortages in food. worse storms is the tip of the iceberg. europe is already dealing with the beginnings of the issue, and when the sources of those great european rivers dry up in the alps, for one example, how will france cool their power plants? if amoc shuts down, or, more accurately, goes into a minimal state of function, models suggest, among other things, epic droughts for britain. it only takes a relatively short period of time for water reserves to dwindle. then at a bigger scale, we've pretty much ignored the unprecedented rate of loss in key parts of the food chain. for example, important insects are disappearing and being replaced by more resilient destructive species like beetles. the ecological collapse is well in motion, and many scientists in climate related fields (although, which field isnt related...) are becoming more depressed at what they are finding. the more we find out, the worse the prognosis gets. And for those whose standard of living is preserved the longest, we can be absolutely certain that they are not working class.
I'm Brazilian and we are probably in trouble, I'm in my 8th heat wave this year alone, we had the hottest winter, the hottest winter day in the historical set of measurements, electricity and food are more costly right now because there is severe draught in part of the country, while other parts are raining too much, the country is on fire, the future seems kinda bleak.

Within liberalism Social Democracy and Neoliberalism represent the poles of class forces. Social democratic policy represents the reformist desires of the privileged citizens of the Imperial core, meanwhile Neoliberalism represents the desires of the capitalist class to reverse said gains by their own domestic population. In a sense it could be said; that the US used to be a social democracy, but this came to an end as the rate of profit fell to the point of making it unsustainable for the capitalists. Yes, it was proto-fascists from the Freikorps, but they were only captured thanks to the treachery of the Social Democrats, who wanted to get rid of the “radical Bolsheviks”, during their seizure of power during the November Revolution in Germany. Their ideological supporters tried to join the forces of the White Movement during the Russian Civil War. However, they did not always succeed, because the proto-fascists in the person of the same Kolchak did not always appreciate what they were doing, for example, by shooting them. Therefore, Stalin knew perfectly well - with whom he was dealing and what he was talking about. Social Democrats are of course better than fascists, but to the extent that they themselves always (always!) betray and sell out the more radical movements in exchange for the illusion of peace and as a choice of the “lesser evil”. This is why social democrats are in the same bed as reactionaries and even fascists - they close other paths for themselves.

Infact it wouldn't be too far out to say most of every right the american working class has today was earned by socialists like bill haywood, mother jones, MLK et cetera. Hello! As a Brazilian who lives in the state that houses the Paraopeba valley, things have gotten somehow worse over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries. To sum things up, foreign capital enterprises are quickly sucking our lifeblood and leaving us with the immense ecological consequences, while we wallow in poverty and precarity in all angles, meanwhile our state is suffering with fires caused by tue agricultural elites who use extreme violence to prevent an agriculture reform. I feel hopeless about things ever getting better.

Colonialism undermined and later shattered their ways of life, which made them far more susceptible to foreign diseases. In short, the notion that they "all died from smallpox" is basically just a cover-up for the real cause of their destruction, which was settler colonial violence. Disease is a convenient narrative for colonizers, as it makes it seem like the death of indigenous peoples' was outside the white settler's control, since the managing and curing of diseases was far more difficult back then. I say this as a white American myself.
But there was no "sheer violence they faced from the colonizers"... It didn't exist. European settlers had to fight hard to defend themselves and their settlements from the sheer violence of the natives...

It would be nice but I think they are a bit uncomfortable, if I'm honest. I was really excited that they had FD Signifier on the show and I felt like JT wasn't really comfortable. He kept laying into the anime thing when FD is extremely vocal about black American issues. It was disappointing to listen to. Also, if I'm not mistaken, JTs wife is a white Zimbabwean and I think he's mentioned that she isn't a communist so I think really getting into black issues deeply might be challenging.

I think a lot of people say liberalism is bad because of its relationship to fascism, it’s similarities with fascism, etc. I think, however, that this is a limited perspective. As communists, we don’t exist to fight fascism, and we don’t exist to fight liberalism to the extent that it is fascist - we fight liberalism because liberalism in itself upholds capitalism and all of its evils. Things can be bad without necessarily being fascist. I worry sometimes that our overuse of the term fascist encourages liberals to portray themselves as left wing allies to communists, whereas that can’t be further from the truth. At the end of the day, we need to learn how to combat liberalism, the hegemonic viewpoint of capitalism, not fascism, a dangerous but ultimately fringe ideology.
As a brother in humanity who wants no gain from you, i can only wholeheartedly recommend that you educate youreself on the real Islam. I say "real" because where i came from, there are a handful people who felt like leaving Islam and when i talked to them it turned out they were never taught Islam. They always came from a backround were outside factors made it impossible for them to see Islam for what it is. Liberalism is basically a softer version Fascism. It typically exists whenever the state of things is bearable enough, and social unrest in subdued enough. Fascism is whenever that bubble pops, and the grace period ends. People eventually get so tired of the TERRIBLE results of Liberalism, they decide to recover an idealized version of the past - re-edifying reactionary social values, while re-creating a Liberal economic order - but this time under ultra-conservative/traditional social values. I should add: the greatest difference between Liberalism and Fascism is that Liberalism at least PRETENDS to be Democratic. It hides beneath the cloak of Democracy. However, the Imperialist (and often times far-right) tendencies of Liberal regimes have been quite well documented throughout history. Let's remind ourselves that Racism and Eugenics were commonplace beliefs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, at a time when Fascism hadn't yet been conceptualized. Typically, Liberal regimes are not as bad as a Fascist regimes - or at least, they're better at hiding and/or justifying their misdeeds and outcomes. In large part, this is due to a matter of public perception, as the Allies won WWII. Had Germany won WII, and they were allowed to write history, they'd also find justifications for the atrocities they committed - much like Liberal Empires do for theirs, nowadays.

A very similar process has happened in the aftermath of the pandemic, and now generation Z kids are experiencing a very similar economic situation that millennials did 15 years earlier. Bourgeois institutions are constantly trying to instill false hope in gullible people who are either intellectually or emotionally incapable of recognizing the consistent general downward trend towards collapse that we've been living under over the last 20 years that the current economic and political structure in the Western imperialist bloc could somehow get better for the population at some point in the foreseeable future without making any fundamental structural changes to society's dominant beliefs or institutions, and it is this false hope that so many people are clinging to that has prevented us from mobilizing and radicalizing the population towards a revolutionary mass movement capable of creating a better future. Nobody wants to believe that it's as bad as it really is and won't get better without serious structural changes despite the overwhelming body of evidence proving it. I used to think arguments like the one in this video were exaggerated and simplistic. I thought, surely the history of liberalism is more morally complex than this. No doubt there have been many villains in this history, but what about all the heroes? But the more I find out about the history, the more horrified I am, and the more I realize that, if anything, this argument understates the matter. For example, when you read the details of how Britain destroyed the Indian textile industry -- plunging the people into poverty -- in order to replace it with British textiles (often imitating Indian styles), it's truly galling. Far from being about "free trade," it was exactly the opposite: the use of British power to suppress free trade for the sake of the Empire and its wealth, no matter the cost.

I come from an insanely rich family in Canada. My dad is a multimillionaire who made his fortunes in the oil and gas industry. I've struggled with profound and crippling mental illness my whole life, but in the context of my upbringing, was only able to blame myself for my predicament in as many morally condemnatory ways as I could muster. I have had nothing but supreme material comfort my entire life, but in spite of having unlimited access the one thing that we have used to rob the rest of world of a dignified life, I have never, ever, been happy or content. Under the conditions I grew up in, in spite of the "success" of my family (even though my parents were always abusive to each other, including myself), I don't think I ever could have prevented myself from hating myself in this way. In being raised within the ideological confines of liberalism, to even consider that you may be a part of a larger social fabric that you don't have complete control over is considered one of the most heinous moral crimes. Why? In doing so you're not taking "personal accountability" for yourself. How can I be personally accountable to the fact that I probably have ADHD (according to the health professionals I am seeing now) and probably have some small level of psychosis? Liberal capitalism, not just as an economic system but even as an ideology, is inherently ablest.
About 10 years ago in seeing the sorts of neurotic and deluded lives most people around me live, I made a conscious decision in myself that it is better to be a temporary hypocrite as you come to understand the material consequences of your individual life and choices, than to exist in complete denial of your external influence on the world. Well here I am now just coming to realize this is a reasonably Marxist outlook to have.
I have always had a pessimistic outlook on life, not so much due to how I view other people, but more so as a response to the conditions I was born into. Whenever I would share my outlook on others I would almost always be bombarded with the same fantastical response: "Don't worry! The free market and science solves all problems!". Utter ideological nonsense. My pessimism only grew as I came to major in earth sciences and came to know in concrete detail just how f***** we have made this planet, and trust me, it is SO much worse than you think. Frankly, I found it quite astonishing that most of the students and even most of my professors didn't take it as the clear existential threat it obviously is. Nobody could deny the science of it, of course, but everyone seemingly did want to deny the severity of the issue in spite of the facts.
I have been so much more open now with the way I feel and how I conceptualize things in my life. Witnessing the obvious G-side of Palestine has compelled me in ways I can't completely control to speak on these issues. But, without fail, in every single conversation I have had around issues like climate change, nuclear war, and Palestine, I eventually get the response "well, you know, there's nothing you can do about it.".
To me, this is a casual and hilarious admission that we don't live in anything approaching a functional democracy. Not only this, but why else is there "nothing you can do?" Well, because socialism is EVIL, of course! And not only is it evil, it's even WORSE than fascism. How can anyone actually believe this? When the H man says he's gonna gas all the J's and goes on to do just that, there is no mystery there. It's the face of evil in its purest form.
At some nonsensical and arbitrary point everyone here seems to come to the conclusion that too much social progress eventually becomes evil socialism. Shouldn't you at least take a moment to understand what socialism, Marxism, and communism are from their own philosophical conceptions of things before you try and critique them? Well, apparently not. The fact that we don't even get socialism right in our critique of it, in my mind, disproves the entire ideological underpinning of liberalism, the political ideology that foolishly claims to have complete authority over all reality.
I had a complete psychotic break from reality last spring due to family trauma and abject horror over what has been happening in Palestine since Oct. 7th, and frankly, I take that as a badge of honour. The attitudes I've seen towards this conflict by the people I know are almost more disturbing to me on a personal level than the fact of everything Isreel is doing right now. Almost everyone I know denies the G-side in some way, even through attitudes as small as willful ignorance and not wanting to pay attention. I have spent a lot of time in my life wondering how my family might react if they were in Germany in the 30's and 40's.... Well, now I know.
In majoring in the natural sciences I was absolutely dumbfounded by our complete empirical and scientific knowledge of the material world around us. Humans are nothing if not insanely capable problem solvers. Becoming a socialist has given me incredible hope for the future where I used to have none. Why? Because I believe in the human race and our capacity to solve problems. There is virtually no issue in science that, even if it can't be solved completely, can't at least be constrained through empirical scientific study. If problems faced in any issue aren't being solved, it's an issue of how the problems are conceptualized and the paradigm they exist in.
At this point it is quite clear that liberal capitalism is the single largest problem to be overcome. Perhaps we won't solve this problem - with the dire straights we are in and the evil and rapidly increasing imperialist warmongering of the US and it allies (like my stoopid f'n country), I could see that coming to pass. In fighting for something better in solidarity with other people who understand what is going on, I hope I'll at least be able to tell myself that I actually did something concrete about it for the rest of my life. The last thing I want is a wasted live, jerking off and playing video games as the fabric of reality collapses around me.

If you are doing your part, I believe it's acceptable and even morally correct to shelter yourself from some realities. Past a certain point subjecting ourselves to more and more evidence of the violence being inflicted on innocents can be detrimental. It can affect our mental health severely and leave us in despair and in a feeling of lack of agency that can be counterproductive to our struggle. Do what you can to advance the cause, but also take care of yourself. And if you have access to money there's a lot you can do already. Fund organizations and get organized.

And yet, when we look at Liberalism is practice, it frequently adopts conservative (or even reactionary) positions, both at home and abroad, clearly opposing those alleged values.

Hello! As a Brazilian who lives in the state that houses the Paraopeba valley, things have gotten somehow worse over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.
To sum things up, foreign capital enterprises are quickly sucking our lifeblood and leaving us with the immense ecological consequences, while we wallow in poverty and precarity in all angles, meanwhile our state is suffering with fires caused by tue agricultural elites who use extreme violence to prevent an agriculture reform. I think a lot of people say liberalism is bad because of its relationship to fascism, it’s similarities with fascism, etc. I think, however, that this is a limited perspective. As communists, we don’t exist to fight fascism, and we don’t exist to fight liberalism to the extent that it is fascist - we fight liberalism because liberalism in itself upholds capitalism and all of its evils. Things can be bad without necessarily being fascist. I worry sometimes that our overuse of the term fascist encourages liberals to portray themselves as left wing allies to communists, whereas that can’t be further from the truth. At the end of the day, we need to learn how to combat liberalism, the hegemonic viewpoint of capitalism, not fascism, a dangerous but ultimately fringe ideology.

Bourgeois institutions are constantly trying to instill false hope in gullible people who are either intellectually or emotionally incapable of recognizing the consistent general downward trend towards collapse that we've been living under over the last 20 years that the current economic and political structure in the Western imperialist bloc could somehow get better for the population at some point in the foreseeable future without making any fundamental structural changes to society's dominant beliefs or institutions, and it is this false hope that so many people are clinging to that has prevented us from mobilizing and radicalizing the population towards a revolutionary mass movement capable of creating a better future. Nobody wants to believe that it's as bad as it really is and won't get better without serious structural changes despite the overwhelming body of evidence proving it. The empire has cultivated our collective denial and delusional thinking and weaponized it against us in order to preserve and further expand their ill-gotten power and wealth.

And steam works fine but the price's are outrageous. My monthly salary as a logistics and rescue co-pilot is like 100 dollar's. I ain't crazy enough to spend that much for a game.
