曾國渠生於1931的新竹新埔農家，民國40年到50年時，每年冬天稻子收割後的農閒期，就和家人凌晨兩點出發，從新埔走路到關西的深山馬武督，割茅草花挑回來做掃把。全村約有10幾戶人家都在做掃把，一年生產好幾千支，他們不只挑到隔壁鄉鎮例如竹北去賣，還挑到桃園縣的新屋、楊梅。賣完捨不得花錢吃東西，走回新埔才吃午餐。
他年幼時曾經看母親和祖母製作草鞋販售，當時草鞋是常民用具，挑擔走遠路一定要穿著保護雙足，不久汽機車普遍，慢慢的草鞋市場衰退，他擔任社區理事長期間，自己憑記憶試做草鞋，以及打草繩，在活動中推廣，他所使用的草鞋工具，以及草繩工具，是祖母留下的百年文物。
曾國渠雖然已經高齡93歲了，可他不但身體健康、耳聰目明，還是一位充滿了幽默感的老人家。他就像是一部行走的客語字典，在講述過往生命故事的時候，張口就是一句句的客家俗諺。例如：「新餔娘 舊草鞋」、再如「家裡沒個嘮叨公 樣樣空，家裡沒個嘮叨婆 樣樣無。」等，讓人在欣賞過往農家零廢棄的天然手做工藝之餘，還能享受客語的草根趣味。
Kuo-Chu Tseng was born into a farming family in Xinpu, Hsinchu, in 1931. From 1951 to 1961, every winter after the rice harvest, he and his family would set off at 2 am and walk from Xinpu to the deep mountains of Ma'oto in Guanxi to cut Chinese Silvergrass flowers and carry them back to make brooms. About 10 households in the village were making brooms, producing several thousand each year. They not only carried the brooms to neighboring towns such as Zhubei to sell, but also to Xinwu and Yangmei in Taoyuan County. After selling the brooms, they were reluctant to spend money on food and walked back to Xinpu for lunch.
When he was young, he saw his mother and grandmother making and selling straw sandals. At that time, straw sandals were daily necessities. When carrying a load on a long journey, they had to be worn to protect the feet. Shortly after, cars and motorcycles became popular, and the market for straw sandals gradually declined. During his tenure as chairman of the community council, he tried to make straw sandals and straw ropes from memory and promoted them in activities. The tools he used for making straw sandals and straw ropes were century-old artifacts left by his grandmother.
Although Kuo-Chu Tseng is already 93 years old, he is not only healthy and clear-headed, but also a humorous old man. He is like a walking Hakka dictionary. When he talks about his past life stories, he speaks with Hakka proverbs. For example, "New bride, old shoes." and "Without a nagging grandpa in the house, everything is empty; without a nagging grandma in the house, everything goes wrong." These proverbs allow people to enjoy the grassroots fun of Hakka while appreciating the natural handmade crafts of the past farming family with zero waste.
