The whole flashback sequence of this film is by far one of the best, most chilling sequences in all of Batman media imo I love this film. Idk if it’s better than Mask of Phantasm, but it’s def on the same level
Fun Fact: the torture and transformation of Tim Drake’s Robin gave me nightmares, when I was younger. Yes it’s for kids, but the way it continues to resonate with others of all ages is a testament to how wonderful this movie really is.
I used to have nightmares with the Joker of that movie. Specially with when he invades the batcave and we get a close in on him. The red eyes. The abnormally large smile. The laughter. It scared the shit out of me.
This whole movie is one of Joker's creepiest moments. The black skin-tight suit & slick back hair, plus the piercing red eyes; this Joker is no frills, just fear.
When Terry goes to Wayne Manor and finds "HA" in what looks like blood just like when Derek Powers's hitman Mr Fixx killed Warren McGinnis and made it look like the Jokerz had done it. And Bruce on the Joker Toxin uncontrollably laughing scared me when I was younger.
I knew this film was going to be different when I was first watching the scene where we see Joker for the first time in the movie, just bathed in darkness, as he pulls a "prank" gun out and just outright kills his henchman for talking back. I think that was the first time we actually see Joker visibly shoot someone in the DCAU because in the Animated Series and in Mask of the Phantasm his main weapon was laughing gas due to creative guidelines. This Joker just stepped it up a few notches and he got more intense throughout the film.
There’s something about him that just feels very Jack Nicholson-like. Fitting considering just how Tim Burton-inspired the original animated series was.
In one of the deleted scenes for this film, they originally were going to use the design from the new adventures of Batman for the old joker’s decomposing body
The movie that cemented Terry maginnis as batman in my point of view. Nobody until this point could ever beat the joker legitimately as Terry did and to this day nobody ever has had a complete victory like he did in this movie. I wish they did more for terry maginnis because hes one of my all time favorite heros in fiction but if this was his magnum opus than it was a great way to go out
We really should have had an Arkham style Batman Betond game as Kevin Conroys last performance,it would have been so much more fitting than just killing him in Suicide Squad
This probably ranks high for me in DC animated, and even live action movies, mainly because it's Batman Beyond, Terry McGuiness is the only person I can accept taking on the cowl. Plus I think Beyond is probably the best comic adaptation, I know it's more of its own thing, and it's different from the material as it's a sequel to the one we are used to but that's what makes it so good.
Terry is the sleek new young Batman with the badass futuristic suit who has the OG Batman watching, listening, helping, and training him behind the scenes. Mind you this is Batman after he has gone through nearly his whole life! Terry is the shit
It's very underrated and has to be the best batman animated movie Especially being connected to Batman beyond. I remember this film when I was younger and a good film.
@ULGROTHA Okay look it's my opinion to say that the underrated batman movie is Return of the joker if you want to look up on any batman movies you'll see Batman beyond return of the joker and lego batman movie what is your problem.
I feel like this RObin story had more of an inpact on Robin than the comics because in the comics Batman bounces back and has like 4 new Robins after. Once this happens DCAU Batman takes 40 years to recover. And seeing Jasons body blown up will never be more traumatising than the brainwashing scene and the bit where Tim starts crying.
BB: ROTJ is without a doubt one of my favorite animated Batman films alongside Mask of the Phatasm & Under the Red Hood. I first watched the film it was the edited version, but when I finally watched the uncut version I actually consider it a way better version and finally made me loved the film. The action and animation is impressive, the voice acting is brilliant and the plot twist is enough to shocked a BTAS fan. And if you ever plan on doing a follow up I recommended reviewing the Epilogue episode of JLU as it is consider a fitting end to not just Batman Beyond but the DCAU.
Epilogue is a mixed bag for me. On one hand we get the great flashback in which Bruce saves ace and stays with her as she dies. Thats a truly amazing moment. Plus it has the great ending scene that homages the first episode of batman the animated series. But...most of the episode is based around the creepy revelation that Terry isn't just a random kid who became batman and he's actually the product of eugenics. It perpetuates the idea that you need a special "batman gene" to be batman and that's really gross.
@@galactic85 honestly, I don’t consider that canon AT ALL. It’s interesting to think about it at first, but the more you think about it ruins the best part of the show (and what ROTJ iterates): Batman doesn’t make the person who wears the cowl, the person wearing the cowl is what makes Batman.
Batman Beyond is just as good as Batman the Animated Series. It just doesn't have the nostalgia factor for people as it doesn't feature many classic characters.
I doubt that. It's been 21 years since Batman Beyond premiered and the kids who grew up with the show are now adults, and they have a deep appreciation for the show.
The biggest issues with the show imo are there aren’t enough two-part episodes and the villains aren’t nearly as iconic. With that said, I actually prefer Beyond to BTAS due to its overall vibe and I absolutely adore the main cast
I think what happened to Tim in Return of the Joker and then near Apocalypse of 09 (if I had to Hazard a guess wonderwoman/Diana was probably killed in that event) could be considered the breaking point that causes Bruce to decide that he can no longer let anyone come close to him and choose to work alone, which would lead to him closing himself off from everyone with the exception of Alfred.
I wish they'd given us a Apocalypse 09 direct to DVD movie instead of the lame Harley Quinn and Justice League movies they've made over the last few years set in the DCAU.
@@captainjakemerica4579 absolutely agree. I wish we could see more of Jessica Cruz in the DCAU, she fit in so well. And the voice casting and design for her was top notch.
YES! One of my favorite Batman movies! With that said I wish I had known there was an "uncut" version as a kid. I was a huge fan of the TV show in elementary school so when I rented a copy of this movie at blockbuster I somehow missed the big PG-13 right on the cover of the DVD case. Needless to say it was kind of a traumatic experience. When I got older I finally rewatched it again and loved it. Thanks for taking the time to talk about it!
My sister and I used to watch this movie over and over again as kids. Considering how dark it is, I am surprised our parents let us watch it. But we loved it so much. I can recite every line of dialogue from the flashback scene. It is one of my favourite on screen interactions between Batman and the Joker.
"But all too soon the serums and the shocks took their toll. And the dear lad began to share such secrets with me. Secrets that are mine alone to know.....Bruce."
@@Xehanort10 It's true, Batsy! I know everything! And kinda like the kid who peeks at his Christmas presents, I must admit, it's sadly anti-climactic. Behind all the sturm and batarang, you're just a little boy in a playsuit, crying for mommy and daddy!
To me, the brilliant Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and the entire DCAU shows exactly why DCAU Batman and Joker are the best iterations of said characters imo, Bruce Timm and Paul Dini and crew understand the character in such ways no DC filmmaker could up to this point. Keep up the great work, Owen!
Funny thing about that. They actually we're going to make a movie about this in the early 2000s and they already had a script for it. The problem was the director didn't want to work on it. And this was a few months before Batman Beyond was canceled after its third season was finished.
@@psyifinotic yea, but if i recall the idea of it was much better than the actual implementation. Also, I didn't realize SNES had a version of it. The Adventures of Batman & Robin was an awesome SNES game.
Batman Beyond was a great story line but honestly the chapter of this set in the past makes it worth watching on its own. Batman Beyond 2.0 that features the love triangle between Bruce Dick and Babs would make a great animated movie but honestly Id watch any Batman Beyond story line. Over the year the best fancasting I've seen for Bruce were Kurt Russell and of course Michael Keaton
I love that they showed terry is not the fighter the past robins were. He had to fight dirty to win against the old robbin who is arguably the weakest robbin there was.
The flashback scene alone is one of my favorite scenes in all of film. It breaks my heart every time I watch it and is the main reason why Tim Drake is my preferred Robin because I feel so bad for him.
"Uh I was kidding Boss!" *pulls trigger...flag pops out* "So was I *chuckles*" *BOOM!* "OOP...No I wasn't" Hamill was menacing as hell in this version of the Joker
Why though seems about right. Heck can't even go on the he's like a father to her because Jim is Alright. Not abusive not absent legitimately a good dad so that role in her life is filled. With Barbra being the more normal of the batfamily also seems like a brutal response since she wouldn't be pining for a father figure to her Batman is just a guy. The coolest guy.
Why is it wrong though? Bruce once said Gordon was the same age his father would be if he was still alive, so how much of a jump can there be between Barbara and Bruce? I've certainly seen bigger leaps in age work out.
Dick Gori She is the same age as Dick, and Bruce is his father. There are plenty of relationships in real life with drastic age differences that work and are healthy, doesn’t mean I have to like it in Batman. Plus, it’s pretty low of Bruce to have a relationship with his son’s ex.
@@zakunick1 not really you shouldn't live your life in proxy to others especially when that said son leaves you and moves on he already broke off the relationship
So it's a story about rebirth and how the lessons from the past help the realizations of the present which also deconstructs and analyzes the world it is set in, asks questions about what it means, features the old generation passing on the torch to the next generation, and takes chances with lore continuity in order to make a gripping and unique story while paying respect to its source material? Also staring Mark Hamil? WOW. I wonder when the DCAU is going to release "The Rise of Wayne" and its only purpose will be to retcon it, cast shade on the chances the past one took, and just restore the status quo instead of going on a new and engaging path that takes chances with what it has!
Under the Red Hood has to be my favorite as well, but im definitely going to give this one a rewatch sometime very soon. I was never a Batman Beyond fan when I was younger but I think I'd be more open to it now.
I remember watching this when I was younger. I remember making 3 drawings about it(joker, joker junior, batgirl, batman) and taped it on to my bedroom wall. Then later when I was sleeping I had a nightmare about robin going crazy. I threw away my drawings afterwards.
i grew up watching this movie, i still have it on DVD. the sheer levels of creepy and artistry made this my gold standard for Batman, Batgirl, Harley, and the Joker. even if I'm not super happy with a lot of dc's choices lately, this is still what i think of when i think of a good batman story and continues to influence the kinds of fanfiction i enjoy (which honestly i think does a better job of understanding why these stories were so successful compared to the live action disasters)
Terry: It's funny. I know about all your other major enemies but you never mentioned him. He was the biggest wasn't he? Bruce: It wasn't a popularity contest. He was a psychopath, a monster.
I think the biggest accomplishments of the series is 2 fold. A show with a premise is a little laughable on the surface (batman as a teenager) which was really well made and very engaging and how disturbing it can get not with just the flashback but the semi body horror moment when Tim morphs into the joker.
Owen Batman Beyond was one of the greatest original animated TV shows to come out of the DCAU what did you like about it yourself personally I would like to know
Wow! Took me back to those days😌. I was in school, 7th grade, when I saw Batman Beyond in 2001 and its TV series and loved it! Wonderful memories....Batman TAS, Mask of the Phantasm, and Batman Beyond ❤
I don't think I ever considered this movie a kind of "Death In The Family", but it makes a lot of sense. Not the least of which because this animated Tim Drake was a lot more like Jason Todd.
My List of Greatest Batman Animated Movies: 1. Mask of the Phantasm 2. Beyond: Return of the Joker 3. the Dark Knight Returns 4. and Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero
Nice video, i strongly agree with you. I been loving this film since i was a kid. I would also add that anyone who likes this should watch the episode "Epilogue" from JLU Season 2 it being the end of the timeline and a great ending to the canon of this movie (it uses plot points from the film).
After binge watching the DCAU Movies (Flashpoint to Dark Apokolips War) I need to see more DC Animated movies. I loved Batman Beyond as a kid and rewatched it again a few years ago and its still amazing. I remember rewatching Return Of The Joker so many times as a kid too but I never did rewatch it in recent years. I think I'll rewatch both that and Under The Red Hood. Gotta see the others too. Wish Marvel did animated series and movies the way DC does it.
"I hope this video encourages you to go back and watch this film again..." Welp, y'all heard the man. Time to rewatch Return of the Joker for the nth time.
batman animated series was the definitive version, but my favorite was actually the new batman adventures. loved that animation look of it. batman beyond was a close second.
I still can’t believe that I was so lucky in finding an unedited version of this film when I was really young in a bargain store and weirdly thought that Batman was going to fight a giant flying joker head and was totally down for it. Did and still do love this film even if it doesn’t have a giant locating head of boy wonder.
In the original script the director made it clear the Harley Quinn was supposed to die in the Batman Beyond The Return of a joker which is fell into the river beneath Arkham Asylum and swept away by the Riptides and the guy who created Harley Quinn didn't want to do that so what he did at the end of the movie was he added in Nana Holly but her name is pronunciated different than Harley Quinn but the only reason the director allow this in is cuz it was a ambiguous anyone who seen the movie knew the Harley Quinn died when she fell into the water beneath Arkham Asylum
There was always another facet to Batman Beyond. Paying homage to DC's history of legacy characters. It was always tragic whenever they revisited an old Batman villain. Such as the episode with Bane, depicted was an old junkie. Acting as an allegory to his years of Venom use.
I watched this so much as a kid ON VHS. I was so happy when I saw rhat the blue ray set of Batman Beyond had the director's cut of return of the joker! It truly is a fantastic film and I will always cherish this film ❤️
I love batman beyond that animated series was fantastic the animated movie return of the joker was really awesome and i love terry mcginiss batman beyond he is one of my all time favorite characters in the dc universe. :)
Saw it on cable tv when i was a child. One of my all time fav. Happy to know that i actually saw the end of original batman animated series on tv itself.
I'm wondering how you feel about the JLU episode Epilogue. Do you like it, or do think it undermines this film as the perfect conclusion to an amazing storyline?
It is amazing amazing how Bruce Timm was riding great Batman stories with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in 1992, and still had a pretty good track record all the way till like 2000! Just fantastic the animation here was top notch, if this came out in 1992 I mean I think it's just as good as mask of the phantasm
Joker turning young tim into a joker drone basically freaked me out as a kid I cnt lie dat shit gave me slight nightmares It was so twisted and a scene like dat for a kids movie was ahead of its time
OMG The Joker magically turned Tim Drake into a midget temporarily, what a monster. How else do you explain that he still looks 13 when he's supposed to be at least 20
When I was in college for animation. I had some classes where I wrote short essays about Batman Beyond and this movie, most were just some scenes that I like or I thought were worth mentioning depending on what we were talking about that day. Well to be honest a lot of my essays were about superhero movies if I could get away with it.
I'd really love it if Batman Beyond gets continued with the same Voice actors, same animation, but an adult rating kinda like Samurai Jack. Although, we all know it would still end up with the Justice League Unlimited "Epilogue"
We can't pretend the explanation of the Joker existing in this movie is ridiculous... Stop it... I accept the explanation... I like the movie... Mask of the Phantasm is flawless and gives a heartfelt origin story and pushes fwd. Not even close
I always felt Batman Beyond ended way too soon. By the time that it got on it's feet, they took it off the air. I heard it was over the fact that it didn't sell toys. I loved it myself. It was unique. This animated feature made me love it even more. To the point where I started reading the comic that came out later on. I loved how dark this feature was. One of my all-time favorites. Btw, enjoyed the video.
This definitely had the best storyline out of all of them, but for me the best DCAU movie will always be Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm. It's like an opera without any of them singing. This is definitely number 2 on that list. Too bad it didn't get a theatrical release like Mask Of The Phantasm did. Then again the question is which version of this movie would they have put in the theater? Censored or uncensored? There was originally another version released which bad Tim pushing The Joker who slips, breaks a tube of water and gets electrocuted as opposed to shooting him. That was how it was originally released
2:05 Which REALLY made the expansions of the universe incredibly awkward with how of the way the show went to stay 'grounded' in reality. I thought Zatanna was a mere mortal in the comics like in the Batman cartoon she first appeared in... making her suddenly have superpowers in Justice League bewildering for me.
Kinda wish you'd do a video talking about Terry break though in the movie. Terry beings the movie thinking batman gives him meaning but at end Bruce says the one thing Terry needed to hear that he gives batman meaning not the other way around.
I do admit i would like to see a Superman beyond film with a Much older clark kent dealing with a new superman like Villain called Ultraman who would be Professor Hamilton nephew who would want revange on superman for his suicide and try and fame and discredit him leaving Superman to stop him as i feel this would be a Better DCAU movie than the last two we got as i feel Batman and Harley quinn and Justice league vs fatal five dont belong in the DCAU
Absolutely love this movie and even love both the censored and uncut versions! ❤ Although, i do find getting electrocuted much darker than getting shot anyday!

A show with a premise is a little laughable on the surface (batman as a teenager) which was really well made and very engaging and how disturbing it can get not with just the flashback but the semi body horror moment when Tim morphs into the joker.
ROTJ has to been one of the best content to come out of the DCAU.
Return of the Jedi
Return of the Joker
Nice video Owen. I LOVE RETURN OF THE JOKER. It is fantastic slice of BATMAN animation history. BEYOND the series is still quite underrated too.
Owen Batman Beyond was one of the greatest original animated TV shows to come out of the DCAU what did you like about it yourself personally I would like to know
Yeah batman beyond return of the Joker is my favourite movie of all time, it was the best memory for me and I'm a huge fan of batman beyond
I didn't like this video, Owen ... I loved it! A wonderful tribute to this awesome movie.
Wow! Took me back to those days😌. I was in school, 7th grade, when I saw Batman Beyond in 2001 and its TV series and loved it! Wonderful memories....Batman TAS, Mask of the Phantasm, and Batman Beyond ❤
This film is phenomenal. Hard to decide between this and Mask of the Phantasm.
Under The Red Hood and The Dark Knight Returns (Pt-1 & 2) r great as well.
@@mrglass8129 Absolutely. 😎👍
I don't think I ever considered this movie a kind of "Death In The Family", but it makes a lot of sense. Not the least of which because this animated Tim Drake was a lot more like Jason Todd.
My List of Greatest Batman Animated Movies:
1. Mask of the Phantasm
2. Beyond: Return of the Joker
3. the Dark Knight Returns
Batman Beyond is one of my favorite series!
"I hope this video encourages you to go back and watch this film again..."
Welp, y'all heard the man. Time to rewatch Return of the Joker for the nth time.
batman animated series was the definitive version, but my favorite was actually the new batman adventures. loved that animation look of it. batman beyond was a close second.
The redesign of Scarecrow for the new adventures was amazing.
This takes me right back to my childhood. This is without a doubt a masterpiece.
Owen thank you for talking about Batman Sub-Zero
Would you really call Terry the Caped Crusaders if he doesn't wear a cape?
I still can’t believe that I was so lucky in finding an unedited version of this film when I was really young in a bargain store and weirdly thought that Batman was going to fight a giant flying joker head and was totally down for it. Did and still do love this film even if it doesn’t have a giant locating head of boy wonder.
I love TMS' work on this movie.
I LOVE THE JOKER! i hope they won't stop using him
Excellent video✌️ Thanks for making it
As a Batman fan I gotta say that Return of the Joker, the Killing Joke and Mask of the Phantasm are spot on.
Crazy how one of my favorite childhood shows was already over 7 days after I was born.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the futuristic crap but that final joker confrontation was amazingly well executed. Heh, literally 😂
guys search on youtube Batman Beyond Movie Cast ,(the video is awesome)
There was always another facet to Batman Beyond. Paying homage to DC's history of legacy characters. It was always tragic whenever they revisited an old Batman villain. Such as the episode with Bane, depicted was an old junkie. Acting as an allegory to his years of Venom use.
5:10 it also helped to explain why at the start of Batman Beyond, Bruce was working alone.
I love the reveal that the Dee Dee twins grandmother is actually Harley Quinn as an old woman. That is so funny
This is like the best Batman beyond episode ever
Hell yeah, love this movie!
God, I miss the DCAU...
Totally agree especially the uncut version. Great channel by the way 👍👊
I always felt Batman Beyond ended way too soon.
They probably wanted to work on Justice League too
8:15 I still find the death in the uncensored version better because it’s slapstick while still being...... shocking.
What's funny is that I think the censored version of Drake's torture and the Joker's death is far more disturbing than the original.
I imagine Joker's death scream shocked more kids than Tim shooting him dead in the chest.
Picked this dvd up at a game/video place near me for like $4, guy was like “I was wondering why no one had bought this yet”
God, i love BTAS and Beyond, it gives me so great nostalgia vibes)
Batman Beyond was surprisingly dark for a kid's cartoon, but Return of the Joker was probably the best movie in the series.
When I first watched this as a kid my first thought of Joker Returning was he and Harley actually had a secret son and that's why The Joker was back.
Under the Red Hood without a doubt is the best of the dcuniverse movies, with Hush and Batman Year One the runner ups...
Agreed. My favorite as well.
The ending of the film was really funny too
Spoilers for the epilogue episode:
Are you a fan of terry being Bruce Waynes son?
@@xxkai_xx2216 kinda?
I'm sorry... Mask of the Phantasm...
I want to see a real life version of this with Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne!
U might just be in luck.
I had burned this with my dvd recorder when it first aired on TV but lost it .
Absolutely love this movie and even love both the censored and uncut versions! ❤ Although, i do find getting electrocuted much darker than getting shot anyday!
11:32 who the hell is Tobi McGinnis?!
Batman beyond is so good, that is all
A well executed batman beyond live action 2 part movie or 5-6 50min episode series would make so much fuckin money. Hire me Hollywood.
If they ever make a live version of this , George Clooney could be Bruce Wayne again .
Mask of Phantasm..... Is my all time favorite... But this one nothing less
Phantasm is a close number 2 for me, its so good!
This and mask of the phantasm are amazing great movies
