  • Using the traditional corn binder, Lancaster County Amish harvest their corn to fill silos with silage. Each bundle, weighing in the neighborhood of 100 pounds, is stacked by hand on the harvest wagon and then unloaded by hand into the corn chopper. The chopper then blows the silage into the silo. Each wagonload of bound corn weighs about 4 tons. The harvest wagon is usually driven by a teenage boy or girl or sometimes a wife of one of the farmers. The men are doing the heavy work. The binder is sometimes run by a teenager or wife also.
