    Duck weed is unbelievable!!! Thanks for sharing all this information. My Aunt when I was 8 gave me my first aquarium this was 54 years ago. It was a 20 gallon long ( I still have it! ). This is my most favorite of all the aquariums I currently have. It's one of the old style with a stainless steel frame, and slate back, and bottom. This aquarium was and still is heavily planted. The plants are descendents of her original plants. The Duck Weed is also descendents, as is the guppies, mollies, and swordfish.
    Over the many years I can't tell you how many starter aquariums have been started from this one unit!! All the fish are mutts. They are fancy guppies. I sale from them and feed larger fish with them. Even though I now line breed fish. This very much loved aquarium stays just as I got it go many years ago. It even still has the air operated diver, and treasure chest.
    Great video my friend!!!

    I was just reading about African annual killifish, and how the smectites in the soil and botanical components(root link between tannin and botanical?) Affect whether the eggs will hatch or not, and most US states have areas with vernal ponds, even if there aren't "fish" that doesn't mean the fairy shrimp and triops and salamanders don't rely on similar soil and tannin compositions as well.
    Thank you for drawing attention to this often overlooked aspect of the hobby, Tannins and botanicals can be more than just aesthetic choices for your tank.

    This was interesting. Got me subbed, even though I've poked around your channel for a couple weeks.
    Random thought; I have a particular interest in bio-camouflage, and while I don't have special knowledge regarding the actual biology of it in fish, it's a pretty standardized thing across most life forms; except for freshwater tropical fish. That always puzzled me, as to why so many of them have bright colors yet so few are actually toxic or live in coral reefs and while that probably plays a role in their evolution, this video actually offers an alternative explanation. If tropical fish are typically living in tannin tea-colored water, on top of the potential direct biochemical effects, it would make sense that their bio-camo would evolve relatively more colorful than their stream dwelling counterparts.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 дні тому

      So I have videos on this....but they're old live streams... I should remake them as videos ... in fact, I'll probably do this ASAP because it's super interesting on a biological and evolutionary sense. Chromataphores, pigment, iridiphores and rockfish venom... all on the dockett!

    I would love a deep dive into salt(s). They also have alot of research for use in this hobby, and I find them quite underutilized. You rarely find habbitats in nature with 0 salinity, and so I wonder why that is not the first thing we should add, and maintain, in any aquarium.

    I'm not even halfway through and my mind is blown.
    Not sure if you touch on this, but some orchid-growers will soak media and roots of some orchids that are having problems in black tea specifically for the tannins so that the plants are triggered to grow more and healthier roots. Many people don't know that orchid seeds have no endosperm and can only grow in nature with the help of mycorrhizal fungi. So now I'm wondering what interplay there is between mycorrhizae and the tannins found in vascular plants. We already know that these fungi are the only microbes that are capable of breaking down lignin (and thus fixing N).

    Great video!! Just today, I added a few small, dry, Magnolia grandiflora leaves to the 75 gallon river scape aquarium I mentioned yesterday in the comments of another of your videos. I also added a nerite snail, some water wisteria and bacopa.
    The tank is designed to to be a habitat focused on loaches. Namely dojo, hillstream, and khuli loaches.
    I'm not going for a black water tank per se, but I I thought the tannins from the Magnolia leaves would be a good addition.

    You're the best Aquarium based UA-camr. I stumbled upon this video a while back and it helped with an issue I had with a new betta. It's fins got shredded up by the filter. It kept lying on the bottom of the tank and not being very active. After watching this video for the first time, I put some chunks of coco coir mulch in his tank, which tinted the water a bit. After that, his fins grew more in a day than the previous week.

    I'm new to the aquarium world and had to find out a lot of stuff the hard way unfortunately losing fish ect more recently couldn't get the bad levels down even after water changes, recently been watching some videos on here talking about leaves being a good thing for the tanks so another amateur mistake I guess but went into my back garden to my grape Vine where the leaves are now brown and falling so put 3 or 4 in the tank and within a day the levels started to drop day 3 and dropped even further fish are looking good and loving the leaves so far so good but will keep my eye on it 😊

      So guppies and shrimp can't handle a ph under 6.5 or so .... so just check the ph or boil the leaves and pour off the water and some tannins if you want the leaf material and not the organic acids in the leaves

    I’m trying to work out your background, I tend to listen to columnist/media/UA-camrs somewhat loyally for a while, so I know what to trust and in what context they are strongest.
    I’m an industrial chemist but that doesn’t always help in something complex like an aquarium. Honesty, the more you know the harder it gets, because there are layers of understanding and then the many many interactions. In general, science tends to work in isolation, single compounds, and not on the system level, at least what you get from Google. In fact it’s the interactions and systems where the real discovery is, but that takes so long to untangle, a body of science can begin to loose some information along the way. In a way, even an MD ends up being a technician, where you know what works but time and cost may not always allow for understanding it all, before a new problem arises. Often an experienced scientist will have an instinct that goes beyond written science, and a careful hobbyist too.
    The main thing I’m getting is you have kept and shared a sense of wonder in nature, pretty cool.

      Haha so I was schooled for Archaeology/cultural anthropology and History. Then i proceeded to do nothing with archaeology, not finish the phd, due to family and health/money issues, then due to that, I started tattooing and graphic design, as well as painting and woodcarving for 15 years or so, owning my own studios...until tada youtube the last couple years is my full time gig. As for other disciplines, I just love learning!
      Basically name a hobby or feild of study and i was probably obsessed with it for a few months haha.
      For instance, i have a chemistry background for clandestine hobbies as a teen... but that's about it beyond honors chem in high school.
      Anyhow big systems are where the magic come out, for sure! Cheers

    Alex, around 27 minutes where you are talking about tannins sequestering metals, would this cause salt (NaCl) to lock up tannins and prevent them from being useful? A lot of us add a little salt to a tank on occasion , so would this mean that adding tannins afterwards would remove any salts, but also waste any potential benefit of the tannins?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Рік тому

      Great question! It can form into some more complex salts, yes...but it can only sequester or bond to a small amount relatively, compared to water dissolving it also. So it may take 10 or 20% But its not significant for most aquarists

    So, is it possible to have a tank rich in tannins that also has a neutral pH? I want to do a “lower aggression” well planted betta home with Amano shrimp and Malaysian trumpet and maybe other snails, and Pygmy cories. Here and there in your other videos it seems you were saying this is possible-but HOW? Sorry if this is confused newbie question.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Рік тому +1

      Yes its possible, but it requires a bit of skill. So you add crushed coral or carbonate....or gss co2, then get the tds to 150 or 200 with crushed coral... and near neutral ph... by adding leaves...so the tds isnt low and the water isnt soft. So with a balanced ph and tannins in the water, your offset the acidity with the crushed coral...and likely use botanicals, aquasoil and slowly add them...until you can see the colors you want....then just add a table spoon or quarter cup lf aragonite or crushed coral until the ph isnt so acidic.

    • @MelodieRose727
      @MelodieRose727 Рік тому

      I’ve been adding a catappa leaf to each of my tanks for the last year or so, and if the ph ever gets below 7, I add a handful of crushed coral or argonite sand. In a week or two (or longer? Unsure precisely but I do test the tanks regularly), it is back up to a nice 7 or 7.5. It may matter that my tap water is super hard, the gh is always off the charts. My understanding of these things is rudimentary and I’m trying to learn if that will even work long term. Just anecdotal evidence from a newbie who keeps livebearers. 😊
