  • The last few days in the nest are devoted to eating and removing the sheath that surrounds their flight feathers. These bluebirds fledged 13 and 14 days after hatching. That is a little early the normal being between 16-21 days. From the looks of progress cleaning their wings, they could have used a couple more days in the nest. The second one to fledge, did not have a lot of lift on his first flight. Mom and dad make adjustments for that and feed them on the ground.while they continue to work on their feathers.

Sorry for the delay, I've not responded to comments before. No special food during nesting, however we feed mealworms in the winter.

@ 2:22....this is why I glue a small little ledge inside the birdhouses I make so they have something to stand on when they wanna get out.

My birds fledged the day before we had a bad tropical storm blow through. I found one chick dead near my porch. I'm assuming it flew into it and died. I have no idea what else could have happened. Another chick was out in the open on my lawn and I shooed it over to where I had the cover of a young Alberta spruce. It didn't seem to have any ability to fly. I wish luck to them. This pair raised 2 broods this season.

Hi Nels, any idea what the big ruckus was when the first baby fledged? Hopefully he/she didn't get nabbed by other birds. Tks for the video.

I'd love to know what kind of camera he uses, too. I want one, but don't know much about them. I have 5 babies in my nest box right now. They just hatched a day or two ago. Wish I could see inside the nest and watch what they're doing.

It could be a Hi Def camera, I purchased the "Hawk Eye" HD bird camera on Amazon. It is the best that I have found. It is much better than the low resolution ones you get on Ebay.

@@leamercatwild3354 - Does your camera also have audio? I'd like to have both video and audio like Nels has. And thank you so much for your reply.

@@vrexy Yes, and the sound is quite good.
I have it showing on my 55" HD TV in the living room. We love it, we call it the Bird Channel.

An inner perch would help the fledglings to get to the hole easier. If no inner perch it would be a good idea to at least rough up the wood under the hole or cut some horizontal grooves. Nice video with high quality audio.

Allah brings out the living from the dead, and brings out the dead from the living. And He revives the earth after its death. And thus shall you be brought out (resurrected).) (Sûrat Ar-Rûm- verse 19).
