    Thank you! We put our first ever nest box up in April. Two days later, there was a nest! Today we are about a week away from having 5 little fledglings!

    I had the pleasure of having a bird house used by Blue Birds. What a treat! I never seen the babies. And my hard of hearing i couldn't never hear them. I missed the babies leaving the nest. Great pics and videos!!

    I have placed 11 bluebird houses around the farm land here and clean every year. Almost always all are used here in Irwin County Georgia. Love the Bluebirds

    Now that my yard has loads of hummingbirds and goldfinches because of the additional feed and plantings we provide, I asked my hubby to make and put up some cedar bluebird houses. Within 2 days of the houses going up, we have a pair of bluebirds we've been seeing every morning checking both houses out. He's been singing up a storm and it's been so exciting at the prospect that they may choose one of the houses to breed!!! Ive been a birder all my life and have NEVER HEARD BLUEBIRD SONG IN MY YARD TILL NOW! I suppose that next year, the second generation of blue lovelys may grace our lives with their presence, and so forth and so on! Your video has got me EXTRA EXCITED!

    One thing I learned this year : the night before the babies fledge, the parents seem to stop feeding, hang around not too far from the nest box and repeatedly call the babies. The next morning, presto! All gone! Wonder if this is something they always do? Anyone else have the same experience? And thanks for the great video! :)

    This was so beautiful to watch! Thank you for posting this. We have just experienced our first bluebird family here in NC; the babies hatched 10-12 days ago. It has been a wonderful experience from the beginning, from putting up the bluebird house one afternoon and witnessing a male bluebird sitting on the house and claiming his "real estate" the very next morning! What sheer joy! We are looking forward to many more such experiences with these amazing birds.

      Thank you so much for watching! I loved making this video and sharing all the sweet and funny things the bluebirds did. We weren't so lucky this year...the BBs nested in trees beside our house (on someone else's property) but brought the babies to feed in our feeders. The babies stuck around for a few weeks so we got to see them every day! Then the second brood hatched and followed the parents to our yard two days in a row so we got to see more babies! They're all gone now but hope to see them in late December!

      Here's several ideas for constructing an aviary:
      Give yourself plenty time.
      take advantage of ready made boat templates.
      (I learned about these and more from Aviary magic method site )

    Great Video. I am trying to get bluebirds this year, and 4 hours after putting up the box, I had a nest. I put it out kind of far, so I cant tell yet what type of bird it is. I think I am leaning toward swallow, so I cant evict it. Going to install another house on the other side today to see if we can attract a bluebird. They arent commonly seen here in Ashville OH, but maybe they will show up with the addition of a house and feeder today

    Extra diligent bird is right! I have a bird house in my front yard on a small tree (North of Houston TX). Didn't think birds would actually occupy this bird house because it was only 4-5 ft away from the side walk where there is a little traffic. Alone with the fact the bird house is only 3 ft off the ground on a relatively small tree but I have notice from time to time two birds building up it's nest inside. One of these birds is more "bluer" than the other. Yesterday as I casually walk onside from my garage, I noticed a small bird on the ground about 4-5 ft parallel from bird house, I thought that was odd because it was just sitting/standing there even as I walk 2-3 steps in the direction. Once I got a little too close (4-5 ft), the small and at this point unidentified bird flew away very low and awkwardly. Almost the very next second from the corner of my eye is saw something then heard the feathers flap as this bird came extremely close to flying into my head. At that point I realized the small unidentified bird must have been a baby from my bird house. I suppose I didn't move quickly the first time some almost immediately the "attacking bird" came full circle and came again extremely close to my head. At that point I thought "OK, I get it, I pissed you off", so I went back into my garage. This happened yesterday now I am in my garage where I can see the tree and doing a little research on the Eastern Bluebird. Very nice looking bird however do come near their babies! I have notice a week ago A mocking bird has started making a nest just 3 ft away from the bird house on the other side of the tree and the Eastern Bluebirds are very aggressive, I would say EXTREMELY aggressive as they tag team this Mocking Bird. Lots of action (lol). Thanks for posting this video..

    • @FlashOblue
      @FlashOblue  7 років тому +1

      Just wait until the mockingbird has chicks! Then you will see aggression! The mockingbirds chased almost all the birds from my backyard while their chicks were in the nest. The bluebirds (the bluer one is a male) are only aggressive when they feel their chicks are in danger. Strange they would build a nest so openly and low. You might want to put the house on a pole and move it to where there isn't so much foot traffic. Also once the nest is abandoned you can remove it and hose out the inside. As soon as it dries there will probably be more residents! Have fun and thanks for watching my video and for commenting!

    How did you photograph these beautiful birds?
    I once saw the family of bluebirds we (were watching that year) go to the nesting box after nesting season was over, mom and dad was checking out the box while their kids watched in a tree next to it. To have had that on film would of been amazing.
    I love the mugs in your video. 💕 Thankyou, it was all inspiring.

      I'm just seeing this post. This footage was taken the second year we had the nesting house up. I dedicated the weeks that passed to watching from dawn to dusk every day. I didn't want to miss anything. I was shooting with a 500mm zoom lens through a double-pained glass door in my laundry room so the birds didn't see me. I also didn't check the box like so many others do. I didn't want to disturb them or scare off the mama while sitting on the eggs. In years since the box attracted so many predators (other bird species, squirrels, and snakes). We lost a few nests with eggs and /or babies ( including a sudden hot spell that killed two of the babies) so we finally had to take the box down. We felt that we'd created a feeding ground for predators). A really sad day.

    • @resagelato
      @resagelato 22 дні тому

      @ Awesome 👏,
      Yes, it is really sad for sure, it must be heartbreaking for the birds to have the parents who have put down much time and effort into it.
      When I put a bluebird nesting box up, we only got bluebirds for three years and then they just didn’t nest there anymore for some reason.
      Other smaller birds did.
      Some years ago, I’ll never forget seeing a dead robin fledgling on the ground, I didn’t think much about it until I looked up and saw the male and female parents, looking down at it from the high wires, along with some other fledglings of theirs.
      As I recall they stayed there for a while, as if they were paying their respects.

    I do not understand why all the bluebird nesting boxes I have seen are made so narrow and cramped. Why can't the boxes be made to give the birds more room?

  • @leighann5308

    Beautiful shots and video. My pair have started going in and out of mine here in Cali it’s January so hoping they choose the box to nest. Did you take this handheld or use a tripod? I’m looking for a nest cam to put inside the box if someone could recommend one that uses a phone app that would be great. I was thinking of using a Wyze cam but don’t know if it would work.

    I think they were gonna do another clutch of eggs. Adults will do this just as they fledge and the young will help with their parents.
    May want to wait a week or so before dumping the nest out.

      Thanks for watching! I live in central North Carolina. Last year we had three broods of bluebirds and lots of baby birds (catbirds, mockingbirds, finches, cardinals, chickadees, titmice, wrens, etc.) and I got many darling photos of babies and parents feeding them!

    • @l.b.9785
      @l.b.9785 7 років тому

      One of the benefits of living in a warmer climate - more birds to watch! We sometimes get 2 broods from our bbirds but they don't start serious nesting for another month or so. Right now they are scouting out the nesting boxes and fighting with the tree swallows who want to monopolize them all.

    • @l.b.9785
      @l.b.9785 7 років тому

      Just wondering if you had any idea about what's going on with my bluebirds. They had been fighting with a flock of tree swallows, trying to claim a nest box. (There are 6 nest boxes in similar locations in the yard and the swallows try to get them all.) Finally, it seems that the bbs managed to prevail and stake a claim on one - not the one they used last year - and have built a nest and laid 5 eggs. However, it is very early for this - in the past we have not seen eggs until late May. And they are not incubating them - the box is empty except for the eggs. Do you know if this means they have abandoned the nest? Should I clean it out in preparation for a second try? Thanks

    • @FlashOblue
      @FlashOblue  7 років тому

      Wish I could help. You might want to contact "All About Birds". They always answer my questions. I've heard of tree swallows causing similar problems but so far haven't seen any of them around here. Our BB looked over out boxes and chose to go somewhere else. Then a pair of chickadees chose the box the BBs used last year....
