The black piece is called the pre filter. In cold weather, below 50 degrees it should be installed with the solid side up, as was done in the video, and has a little snowflake symbol showing. When temps above 50 degrees it should be screen side facing up, and has a little symbol of a sun on that side. Good detailed video.
The black plastic screen that is on top of the air filter has 2 positions: winter and summer. The way you placed it would be for winter. You should see a snowflake on one side and the sun on the other. That tells you which way it should be positioned. It fits 2 ways in the slot.
I have heard that the black peace that you did not know what direction it went in is for different Temps. Sumer and winter for allowing heat into the intake in winter and blocks heat for summer. But I'm new to chainsaws so I could be mistaken.
All plugs are pre-gapped. Look at the side electrode after checking the gap, it should always be 90 degrees to the center electrode, they are designed that way.

Sounds right, thanks for sharing!!! that make sense. I will look into it.
My farm boss doing the same thing not starting ty for your video it definitely needs help
Took it to the local shop they said it's flooding itself out. I got it running good again for the time being
Shouldn't the plug Come pre-gapped since it's a model-specific kit?
I would think but I gues its good to check.

Thank you for sharing the know how
Any time!
Mine came with 20" bar?
The Stihl Farm Boss MS 290 uses a 20 inch bar, not an 18 inch.
I put all that new already an a new carburetor
NOT A Stihl Certified Tech I'm guessing. But still, basic instruction for the basic DIY guy or gal.
Nothing you did would likely help a starting problem. If you didn't have a running problem.
