I recall Beverly Sills saying she had not had a happy life, but it had been joyful. A profound difference of perception, faith and perseverance.

One of the things I have often admired about Sills is her bedrock realism and total lack of self pity. In many ways life dealt her some heartbreaks, but she made her way through with such warmth and integrity. A very special lady and artist - the musical world is much the poorer without her.
Really nice to see this insightful interview between 4 beloved singers.

Very true but being married to a multimillionaire I'm sure helped. He gave her a 10 carat solitaire diamond ring!

      @@jimbuxton2187Wow. How cynical you are!

I was lucky enough to hear live two of these fabulous artists: Heidi Grant Murphy and Angelika Kirchschlager. In Vienna, Angelika was playing in "The Merry Widow" and she really made that operetta so alive. In Oklahoma City, I went to the recital of Heidi Grant Murphy. She was such an impressive innovative singer and I was so lucky to be able to meet her. She is a very lovely lady.

Sills says her husband "never offered any opinion [of Sills' singing] whatsoever." Extraordinary!

Itersting fact....I did not know. She continues then..to contribute to a long legacy of performers/ teachers. Martha Lipton, Virginia MacWaters (who I adored), Eileen Ferrell (I turned pages for an accompanist in her studio,) Willaim Shriner,
Camilla Williams, the list seems endless...to me.

I think Beverly was wise to retire from singing when she did.
