    A few days ago a green space near my house got cut down, every time it rains i can see snails trying to go from it to another green space that hasn't been cut down, so every time i take every snails i see (generally 4 or 5) and transfer them to the other side by hand so that the population can survive, while there is still enough rain so that they have time to move around once there, now i have to say i live in Paris and people look at me like a fucking lunatic going back and forth at nigh looking at the ground and grabbing things only to put them 10 meters away for 5 minutes, but hey its worth it i love to see snails every time it rains, in a place like Paris were most people don't have a clue how nature works like the little spoiled kids of the universe they think they are, it feels good to reconnect with mother earth every time that's possible.

It's more likely there are different kinds of intelligence for different species (see Ed Yong's "An Immense World") rather than a linear progression. Plus there's the idea that if we are seen as more intelligence beings, it would probably be less akin to deities than to the antagonists.

    We've got a lot of those bridges here in Holland, we also have small tunnels for when toads want to cross the road during mating season. Some volunteers even help them get to the other side by letting them run into a barrier and led into a bucket, and then crossing the road with the bucket, setting them free again every now and then.

    The first animal bridge I came across was in the southern region of Carinthia in Austria. It was a bear bridge. When I asked a local about it, he said, "We lost them once, and so when we found out they had come back we built a bridge at their favorite crossing. We did not want to lose them again." Gotta love the Austrians, no fuss, just action.

      The last one who crossed the border a few years ago here in Germany was shot, stuffed and put on display in a museum...was the last bear sighting since the 19th century and all it got was declared a danger by politicians and getting shot, great shit...makes me want to hunt down politicians and stuff em too.

      Survival of the fittest. The animals and plants that do survive will evolve to the new environment. If they don't, then they'll die. That is life. Deal with it. Who cares if we're killing millions of animals? They weren't fit enough to continue to exist.

      Nature made us. By extension, all that we build are also natural. Even birds build nests, and bees make hives, so why should the things we build be any less natural?

    • @LuckyCoinFrog
      @LuckyCoinFrog 10 років тому +1

      ***** Because in nature everything an animal does will effect its environment in a way that fits its system. (a deer poops, a bug eats) We have ripped away from that system and almost everything we do benefits nearly no other native life. (humans poop, land is cleared for waste treatment plants and chemicals are introduce to make it better for us alone.)

    • @stevecarnegis4413
      @stevecarnegis4413 10 років тому +2

      ***** You're raising an interesting etymological question about what we mean by natural. Animals are and will keep adapting to the things we build and our other activities. But for now at least the chemical and physical nature of the things that we build can be so foreign to them that they cannot engage with it at any ecological level, and that is why many of our constructions cannot be considered natural. The intellectual and cultural revolutions that have allowed humanity to drastically change the chemistry and physics of the earth's surface within the past 200 years has vastly outpaced the rate at which animal populations, much less entire ecosystems, can accommodate those changes without suffering population bottlenecks and extinctions.
      So unless we want to condemn future generations to a much less biodiverse world for the next few million years until evolutionary forces can adapt using the weedy, homogenized pool of species we're currently pushing most ecosystems toward, we must accommodate the needs of animals (and plants for that matter, but that's a whole other issue--maybe MinuteEarth will make a video on assisted migration for climate change once the academic community reaches more of a consensus on it) for things like migration corridors: like bridges over highways.

    • @emperorpalpatine9841

    In Sanford, Florida on the S.R. 46 there is a patch of protected land that this road travels through. They built the road up above the ground level in spots to allow for small and larger (like alligators) to pass under. The rest of the road is fenced off on both sides to help funnel the animals toward these u dear ground passages.

    Too bad you left out the infamous "Toad Tunnel" in [my home town] Davis, Ca. The mayor was a real nut; she had some really strange ideas for the town like turning off the street lights at night so you could see the stars better. Not filling in "historic" pot-holes on the roads. Building the Police Station out of bails of hay... the list goes on.

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 9 років тому +3

      I'm not sure how turning off the street lights at night to see the stars better is nutty. Light pollution is a real thing, and most ppl won't be using street lights at night anyways. It'll save energy and reduce light pollution. Plus, who could object to seeing the stars better?

    • @cOmAtOrAn

      Here in my hometown they destroyed 4 parks to build new parks that looks crappier and lot less animal habbitants, because you know; 10% of budget goes for the construction and 90% goes to their pockets. basically a "valid" reason to steal money.

    • @Ixions
      @Ixions 9 років тому

      For some politicians "historic" is code for "too expensive to bring up to building code". I would never live or work in a historic building. I'm funny about fire sprinkles, fire escapes and proper electrical work.

    • @shriramvenu
      @shriramvenu 9 років тому +3

      there is nothing insane about turning off street lights to see stars better. its called light pollution and a lot of people care about seeing the stars, especially people interested in astronomy and astrophotography. just because YOU don't see the value of something doesnt mean that it doesnt have value.

    After backpacking a highway between my home and a state park this week I noticed way more roadkill and non-biodegradable litter than I did driving past at 55 mph. I concluded that speeding by on our highways psychologically compresses the space that includes the road and its margins. Speeding by doesn't allow us to think about that land in the same way as our lawns, parks, even city streets, which diminishes our sense of responsibility to care for it.

      Deviljho Squirrels, bunnies, chipmunks, small birds, etc. etc. are probably the vast majority. They reproduce quick so it doesn't "matter" to them. Would be nice to see the break down for each species though.

      Bluemofia I realize all this, but with no real figures on the population of animals, a million seems like way too much, even for smaller species. Haven't been able to find numbers by just googling "wild life population in the us", so I guess we'll never know.
