Astro S10 Spring Upgrade Ruined My Van, The Internet is WRONG

- To get more lift, I had Chevy S10 Leaf Springs installed my Astro Van; both the forums and the Astro groups stated that S10 springs provide a 3-4" lift, but they're all wrong. S10 Springs have lifted the rear of my van a whopping 6-7" and it looks awful and drives terrible now.
I'm not sure what to do now. I have a huge road trip coming up very quickly and I need to fix this fast.

I used to have a 2wd '93 Sonoma pickup (same thing as an S10) and the 2wd and 4wd S10 trucks are totally different underneath. The 2wd trucks are spring under which means the leaf springs go under the axle. I don't remember how my 2wd was but some vehicles have the shackle under the leaf spring which is how those lowering shackles would lower a vehicle.
Maybe you're supposed to use leaf springs from the opposite configuration from what you bought? Like maybe you got the 2wd springs that are supposed to go under the axle which might mean they have more arch? Or vice versa.
I replaced my leafs with 1700lb leaf springs and added spring assist shocks. Van doesn’t bottom out and it sits about 3 inches higher. 2 inch lift up front, Van sits level.
ID just have the springs reset I done this to a set I had on my mini truck to drop them 2 inches. Also it would have been a good idea to take measurements before ( measuring from the centre of the hub to bottom of gaurd) any work is done so as to have a base line to work from ,as now with the springs raised and diffrent leaf hangers , then talk of adding other parts to drop it its hard to tell where your going to end up , your camber adjustment on the front will be all screwed now .
sounds like a pain .. but pull them and sell them to someone who wants 7" lift ... install 1700 lb Astro springs with the drop shackles and air shocks.. then you can adjust up and down with the shocks .
what about work van with some load?
The 1700 lb Springs are going to be stiff unless you're going to load it up I put the 960s on mine and cut a half a leaf off each bottom spring and added air shocks now it rides like an old oh maybe like a 95 Impala like a big old car
You pretty much lost me at "the internet said".
Remove a leaf and install air shocks and a air compressor. You can always use on board air.
I like that idea....
Just go buy a stock new van bro. Most of the stuff your are saying is wildly misinformed.
Explain?
22-687 is correct and should be about a 7.5" arch when new. Astro/ Safari springs should be about 4" arch new. Also, aren't you supposed to reverse them to center the rear wheels in the opening better? You're getting lift like the ZR2 springs which should have abouta 9" arch.
I have what I think may be the answer you're looking for, at least it has worked well for me
And that is, instead of messing with the leaf springs in rear, I replaced my standard shocks on my 1998 Astro with rear Monroe load lifter shocks. I can tow most anything that is within the vehicle's torque range without it bottoming out. And it leaves the vehicle looking normal.
i got upgraded springs for my 94 but i went with the actual astro part # (1195HD) opposed to the S10 springs. I have a lot of weight in the back of mine but after seeing this im glad i got the ones i did. They're supportive while giving the van a cool stance but not over the top like the S10 springs
Nice, looking chevy van. I, own a 93, chevy ASTRO van
I'am Your Newest Subscriber Great Videos. I Just Got A 1999 Astro Van 2WD 325k Miles Somebody Changed The Engine Feels Like A Crate Motor Runs Great. I Wanta Lift It To Get 235-75-15 Tires On All 4 Wheels. So Glad I Saw This Video I Was Going To Get S10 Leafs Put In
You can fit 235/75/15s without a lift if you massage the front fenderwell area. Check out the Astro build videos and you’ll see where I had interference. Mine required a 2” lift because my wheel width and offset made the interference worse but I’ve read that size fits stock wheels at stock ride height if you adjust that front inner fender area. Cheers!
Go back to stock Astro springs with the long shackles and run air bags when towing.
If axles were above springs instead of below, it would be perfect. That would drop it like 3 inches.
I tell everyone i work with on a daily to go with a set of helper bags. You’d get your lift and a smooth ride.
and easy to install.
I had an Astro for work years ago and that little fucker ripped.
Mine is slow AF
My Astro has a 2”Jor lift and I added Monroe air shocks that I inflate when towing or hauling the dirt bike on the hitch. Yank the S10 ones out and go that route is what I would recommend. Or/and add a leaf to the stockers.
Your ASTRO is BAD 💪 AF 👍
U need to find a real spring shop. They will make the correct springs for you and what you want to do . Look for a truck spring shop .
People may have been talking about a good set of used springs
That's what I used, off a '98 s10
@@AstroVanTribe did you do a 2” body lift and s10 springs in the rear? Did it hack up height?
@@andrewcropper237 I had the 5" JOR lift kit already installed but was running the factory springs which are garbage - THEN I added the s10 springs which gave around another 3" of height so I had to adjust the springs in the shackle holes to lower things. Had 3" spacers and the re-indexed torsion keys - My van is pretty tall with 32" tires, now
I'm sorry...but that was fricking hilarious. Air shocks?
Maybe stock wore out s10 springs is what people try
yeah or base model s10 springs?
leave it alone.

Not That It Has Anything To Do With An Astro Van But That Rod Is plenty Long Enough To Drop Down And Stab The Ground Flipping The Van If It Breaks Towards The Front Keys.
I Never Herd Of This Happening To Anyone Else But If Any Of These Vans Just Flipped Over They Might Just Think It Was Some Unknown Random Shit In The Road And The Van Is Totaled So Who Would Investigate?

I used s10 leafs. Stock shackles. 2 inch lift in front with torsion bars cranked up, total front about 3inches.
About 1 1/2 inch higher in back. I think the older s10 had less of an arch.
Happy how mine turned out
Did you do the body lift as wel?
No
If you put bigger tires on a car/van. You will need to go higher gears in the differential. You should definitely check your axle tag to see what gears you running. If you put 29-32 inch tires on a car/van/truck. You will need to upgrade your gears to at least 4.10. Maybe even a 4.56
My research shows 373 for 29s. And speedo is right on.
@@davidgentz1731 sounds about right.
Bummer Dude,
I'm assuming those springs are new??? If so, I would back off the keys a smidge and drive it a bit loaded down or tow something with some moderate tongue wight and see if they settle in a bit.
if time and money are no object then you could LS swap, paint match the "Hung Ripper" sweet summer time mystery machine.
I put helper leaf springs and air shocks on my 2005 Astro. 265,000 miles.
you can put 1000 lbs of weight in da back and mash them down a little..Hull the weight a few days and you'll it drop an inch or two...Leave it sit a few days too helps...With the heavy weight init..
Beautiful Van
Needs BOOGIE WAGON on a spare tire cover! If this van is a rockin.....
Have you considered mounting the leaf springs under the axel and installing the taller shackles? Obviously under mounting the leaf springs would drop it too much but you can compensate with the shackles.
Ive driven my 94 astro awd at 95mph on the highway. Scary as shit but it did it
Put the 2.8L Duramax in it with 8 Speed Transmission
HahHahahahhahahahahahahahah. Man that’s cool stuff. Put the axle ABOVE the leaf springs
I'm 5 inches lifted with 30's. I cruise on the freeway at 70-75 everyday for a 50 minute commute, woth plenty of power left to push it to 80. It rides just as good as it did stock. I tow with it too. No issues there either. If your van drives like shit after lifting it, find a better alignment shop and het better shocks.
K now go up a 5% grade with a head wind.
@@ADDvanced lol I go over White Pass on hwy 12 in Washington regularly. At least 2 times a month. Thats a 6% grade and its almost always windy. The 4.3 is not under powered. One of the trucks at work is a Chevy 1500 with the 4.3 and it's got a utility bed lol
@@jethro9341 you are right HIS 4.3 is underpowered

@@eln0n01 It's a garbage motor designed in the early 80s. I hate it.
I've had S10 springs in my van for 5 years with no issues. I now have 24 inches of lift on coil springs.
Coils?
@@ADDvanced Yes, coils. I am putting solid axles in from a Dodge
spring under and use the lowering shackle
Put the Trailer on there and see how much it drops with the weight
You can have the new rear leaf springs recurved at a spring shop .. typically a place that does heavy truck stuff, we use L&M spring in a Lowell Ma. Must be a place out by you. Good luck
The lowering shackles didn't work because on a truck they are flipped. The spring hanger is on bottom, then shackles, then the spring. The van has essentially a flipped shackle. A lot of 4wd guys do that for more lift.
Remove the very bottom over load leaf. It’s actually a pretty easy process and don’t even have to remove the leaf pack, although it does make it a little easier.
That might be my best option. I think I'm going to put the trailer on it tomorrow and see what happens.
@@ADDvanced Looks funny now, but once you get your stuff in the back, and a trailer on it, you'll wish you didnt mess with it.
It looked better at the end of the video, after the front adjustment. The question really is the handling and the ride.
If it rides well enough, leave it. I know for every project I have done through the years, I sometimes hyper focused on perfection.
Let is settle for a while.
Tow or haul with a little tongue weight in it.
Re visit it later.
In the video, it looks kind of cool to me.
It's been a year and a half, and it hasn't settled at all. I was hoping it would.
Lol lmao yea looks really stupid my eyes are watering
You need to change the rear end to keep up with the tires and then the motor will be just fine that's where you guys miss the point I just did a 2-in lift on my 205 Astro van and got the 29-in tire so I'm going from a 342 to a 373 and I'll be right where I'm supposed to be that's where they f****** they don't finish the
I'm AWD so that'd be a bit complicated.
When I needed extra capacity on my 1/2 ton pickup for a truck camper, I installed airbags & compressor without changing springs. Worked peachy and the ride remained stock regardless of load. Perhaps change the springs back to (new) stock Astro and consider a bag kit?
Probably would have been a better move
I just did the same on my astro cargo van. I dumped the heavy put the softest springs on and added air shocks and compressor with auto pressure control. Rides like a mid size car not a truck. My astro will never have to work hard again
Maybe a tent cooler camp stove. It has 2 body lift. With 29. Shes a sassy looking van.
@@davidgentz1731 Hi, do you mind sharing the air parts you used please?
the geometry is all f@cked up....lol
Go back to stock, just put air bags and a trac bar
Put the Trailer on it and where does it sit?
If you don't need the lift all the time why didn't you just go with air shocks and leave everything else stock?
I was running shackles before w stock springs and the entire Astro safari community claims these s10 springs are only 3” of lift, so removing the lift shackles and installing these should have resulted in no additional lift with a stiffer rear end able to handle more weight while towing and improving handling.
Instead it lifts 7-8”
Gonna say take out those leafs and try again
Put a few bags of sand in the back.
If you had a fork lift you could push back end down till you take some arch out of the springs
Good idea, I'll call your mom! jk. :D
I like the way it looks. The rake is cool. Why not just get a 1/2 to 1 inch puck in front
I already have 2" pucks in front and the torsion bars cranked. If I go any higher I'll need to extend the steering shaft and the CV axles will probably start wearing out real quickly.
@@ADDvanced I see. Wont new leaf springs settle after a few weeks maybe enough that you wont mind it. Anyways dude I enjoy your content and I dig your van man!
@@3941602 So far it hasn't settled much. I'm going to live with it until I hook up the BackAstro project and see how it sits, and go from there. Thanks for the support man! Cheers!
Farout! Go with it! You got the 70's hair going . I'm gonna do it! Thanks.
In retrospect I think adding a leaf and air bags would have been a better move. Might change again, need to tow the BakAstro first and see how it does.
I’d de-arch the springs. Any competent shop can do this. It would avoid needing to play around with shock height and allow you to put back on the Bilsteins. So sorry this happened. Thanks for sharing the experience since it’ll help others who might get misinformed.
This is correct. Might be difficult to find a spring shop this competent though...
So pull out your overload and don't buy extended 'tension' shackles...
Those aren’t extended shackles those are stock ones.
Use a little heat on then and and it will lower it
Seems uncontrollable. Thinking about lifting the front more, with torsion keys, but worried about the geometry of the CVs.
Had your old springs rear.
What about 4:10 dif
It looks dorky... the axle tube looks too far forward too. I'd like to find out the fix. They call that jury rigged.
Not sure what to do. It looks okay when towing and loaded up. :/
@@ADDvanced Is it possible to have a new spring shackle further forward (from the forward... no that would move the axle... I think if it functions well and safe live with it... the higher it is the higher price you can demand for it when you sell it (🙂)

Ask 4 bob
Maybe:
Sell that s 10 spring set

Too high
Too high and hella expensive to ship
Purchase after market Astro springs that are the second option above stock 1,300 /or 1,350 weight limit up to i believe at 1,700 +-
SD springs
Maybe a refresh of your clamshell u bolts as slightly longer and fresh bolts
Use the journey shackles and adjust accordingly !!!!
Do not order heavier duty Astro 4-leaf springs to harsh at 2,100 spec
Make sure leaf’s are not reversed - on end in two inches longer than the other and impacts wheel centering in wheel well
One side 24” the other 26”
I also had a 3 inch body lift and zero torsion bar lift
And had the higher torsion bar keys installed
New torsion bars are nearly impossible to find only one of 2 can be sourced
My van was lifted but essentially level
Hmm... I don't agree with a few things you mention at the beginning of this video about the engine being under powered - I've got the '04 AWD converted to 4x4 with the JOR 5+ lift, larger/reindexed torsion keys and 3+1 S10 springs (used out of a '98 s10) AND the JOR rear shackles.... I regularly find myself driving over 90mph with 29.75 tires and I can do that up hill if I manage my throttle correctly when I see the incline coming... I'm running the 3:42 gearing. I've driven the van across the country and back twice with this set-up, now.....
With the 29.75" tires, from the ground to the center of the rear fenders it's 37" and at the front it's 36" - I could drop the rear an inch but it settles when loaded up with gear/tools so I like it - I had to do the "ball joint flip" - My van handles like it's on rails, drives awesome and I've got plenty of power.... I was getting pretty great gas mileage too until my injectors got clogged up - I'm working on that now and think I've solved it but we'll see.... I did put a new Jasper transmission in it a few years ago
I don't know what happened with your springs but something isn't right....
I have the same gearing as you, and I don't know how what you're saying is possible. 75mph is maybe 12mpg with this thing. Can it do 80? Yeah, but it doesn't like it. I've hit 85+ coming down a mountain grade, but you're saying when you crossed the rockies, at altitude, you were going over 70 on those long uphill grades with 30" tires and 5" lift? With stock tall gearing?
I think your speedometer is off. That does not add up at all.
@@ADDvanced the Rockies were the toughest part of the drive for sure, definitely felt the power drop but 5k-7k is no sweat... I'm in the fast lane passing people... I try to keep it under 75mph for the fuel economy but regularly find myself cruising over 80mph - my van loves it... there's 4mph difference due to the tire size and, on long trips, I rely more on the maps speed so I know my speed is accurate. If your van is a dog you need to really get into it, my van is pretty much new at this point...
I speak about it here:
ua-cam.com/video/tECWCPz48kM/v-deo.html
I have the 2/3 inch body lift kit to install . This makes me think new stock astro springs with journeys shackles should lift the back and sturdy the ride . About 3 inches .
Yeah I'd go with the stiffer Astro springs if you tow anything....
@@ADDvanced I'll probably just be towing a old Honda on a trailer . Stock or a little more heavy duty if I can buy them . That's a great looking van !
I had the 3 inch lift installed . I have p235 75 15s . Driving is ok but they run in the front . I have the flairs too . What size tires do you have on your van ?
Stock springs with a gas charged shock has a great ride and handling .
From what I just seen they did an axle over instead of an axle under if you do an axle under you will get your 3 in back I have a Sonoma 99 Sonoma
You could still pu your leaf spring at the bottom ton get the 3inch drop and put the longer shackles you got... still a lot of pita
Those lowering shackles mount with the spring bushing end going up towards the floor. Most people put spacers between the suffrage and body so it salmost levels out.
Under sling the leaf springs I'm cut the shackles back on
You can easily lower it with an aluminum block of the size you prefer, 2 or 3 inches and they serve in both ways to raise or lower the van. and it is very easy to install. And I don't know now, but before, you could get them in any auto parts store.
You mean flip the axle? Kind of waiting for these springs to sag a little.
Don’t know if this has already been said or not but it looks like you still have the journey off road front shackles in which is part of there lift kit
Nope. Stock shackles. Still way too high.
Just from what I saw on the ground, those new S10 springs have a much larger arch on them of which would translate to a higher body lift! By all means, correct me if I am wrong.
Internet said 3” of lift. Was more like 5-6”
What side of tire you got?
235/75/15
@@ADDvanced Ok thank you

Costume offsets -
My dad and his brother put a olds 355 in one it was decently fast but eventually got sold(not a AWD though)
Put the leaf under the axle and use the adjustable shackles to get the ride that you want. This way you still have the stiffness of the spring to tow with and the look that you want
What a co-incidence. I actually spend day in and out on here looking at S10 stuff because I have a S10, and had a wild hair to look up astro van stuff the other day and subscribed to your channel and had no idea you had made this video. Thing is, i been studying how to both lift and drop my S10, and can't decide. But your problem is pretty obvious, your shop installed your axle under the springs and it gives another few inches height which is why you are getting that. If you don't believe, just check out how to lower or raise your S10 and you will find everyone from pimple popping space cadets to older drunk guys doing that. It isn't too late for yours, and it isn't too difficult to do the swap if you didn't want to mess with the garage again, which may just have not understood what you were wanting or something, idk.
Here is a simple lift, and the guy just bought longer shackles and the axle is still on the upper side of the leaf springs, here I timestamped it for the rear, the front is before it ua-cam.com/video/USkpIrlRots/v-deo.html
Looks good but how does it handle on freeway at 80?
Like a lifted van lol
Just got back from a 4000 mile road trip tho, so its alright
looks like 4 inches to me
There’s literally shots of a ruler
Yeah, but there was a gap before. It wasn’t slammed. 4 inches isn’t from the tire, it’s from the previous height.
@@Danger_jake I looked back at a different video of his and it definitely looks like a 3-4 inch increase
@@Danger_jake True, but I also have 29s.... bigger diameter
@@Danger_jake Right, stock gap plus 3 to 4 inches is what he got. Not sure on the misconception about this.

The s10 spring upgrade is mostly for van lifer when you add the weight of the camper build inside of the van it will go down a few inches to give you a better ride and ride hight and if you go higher they've done a engine swap
Yeah, I'm leaving them in for now, the van is empty at the moment. Putting in a diesel heater and house battery system.... we'll see how it looks once I get it all rigged up. Big trip in 2 weeks :)
I would def just undersling the axle and put on those adjustable shackles you already bought!
If nothing else, a cheap set of bags from AirLift is like 350 and can fill with a standard air chuck. That in conjunction with your stock springs and those new shackles would likely give you the 3" you were looking for too.
Honestly, I would much rather have the extra lift. Match up the front without messing the torsion bars.
I doubt the make drop brackets for the front diff like they do for the IFS in the S-10/Silverado.
The front is lifted w 2" pucks, and the torsion bars are 100% maxxed out. The only way to go taller is with bigger front pucks, and then extending the steering shaft.
Idk what you installed, but leafs from a 1994era s10 gave my rig 3-4in of lift. No problems whatsoever. I think you probably installed the wrong ones.
That's what I'm thinking to. There are quite a few S10 leafs springs for the 94' and up S10's. Standard 2wd, standard 4wd, ZR2, and ZQ8 all come to mind. I know front springs were different between the 4 cylinder and the 6 cylinder trucks, not sure if the rears were specific based off the engine size though. And being that all S10's have the axle above the leaf springs, maybe you actually need 2wd leafs as 4wd leafs combined with the axle below would make it really high.
I'm using the 66-287s that everyone says to use. This link: www.sdtrucksprings.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1430&fbclid=IwAR2OVGNSs2QRkhYkNuQobzRaqnhoLpFzbxmiSe2zGyD-XmtlRhAYZASpBI8

you do know that the s10 has many different leaf spring types ; one for 4x4 zr2 one for reg 4x4 and then 2x4 and another set for the extreme ,so yeah you bought the wrong type
No I did not. I bought the part number that was WIDELY suggested as the correct one in all the Astro safari forums. What part number spring do you claim to be the correct part?
My dude, your front end looks like its stock height. That's why the rake is so severe. Plus you have always needed longer rear shocks for any of the lift options.

ua-cam.com/video/A-sWorZKNek/v-deo.html
In addition to that, I then max out my stop torsion bars for the additional inch. This is what is called the 2+1 lift according to Journey's, which is a 3" lift. The front is lifted 3".
