Lassie is an American television series that follows the adventures of a female Rough Collie dog named Lassie and her companions, both human and animal. The show was the creation of producer Robert Maxwell and animal trainer Rudd Weatherwax and was televised from September 12, 1954, to March 25, 1973. The fourth longest-running U.S. primetime television series after The Simpsons, Gunsmoke, and Law & Order, the show chalked up 17 seasons on CBS before entering first-run syndication for its final two seasons. Initially filmed in black and white, the show transitioned to color in 1965.
The show's first 10 seasons follow Lassie's adventures in a small farming community. Fictional eleven-year-old Jeff Miller, his mother, and his grandfather are Lassie's first human companions until seven-year-old Timmy Martin and his adoptive parents take over in the fourth season. When Lassie's exploits on the farm end in the eleventh season, she finds new adventures in the wilderness alongside United States Forest Service Rangers. After traveling on her own for a year, Lassie finally settles at a children's home for her final two syndicated seasons.
Lassie received critical favor at its debut and won two Emmy Awards in its first years. Stars Jan Clayton and June Lockhart were nominated for Emmys. Merchandise produced during the show's run included books, a Halloween costume, clothing, toys, and other items. Campbell's Soup, the show's lifelong sponsor, offered two premiums (a ring and a wallet), and distributed thousands to fans. A multi-part episode was edited into the feature film Lassie's Great Adventure and released in August 1963. Selected episodes have been released to DVD.

I was born in 1951 and had some rough times growing up in the late 50’s- early 60’s. But come Sunday night at 7 pm I had my weekly escape to forget everything for 30 minutes because that is when Lassie was on. It had the best acting, storylines and beautiful music. I will always have such warm memories of this show.

      "Grandpa
      Everything is changing fast
      We call it progress
      But I just don't know
And Grandpa, let's wander back into the past
And paint me a picture of long ago
Did lovers really fall in love to stay
Stand beside each other come what may
Was a promise really something people kept
Not just something they would say and then forget
Did families really bow their heads to pray
Did daddies really never go away

I watched Lassie while my mom rolled my hair in those dreadful pink foam rollers. There was an episode where Lassie lost her memory & I thought my heart was going to fall out! 💔 She had it back by the end of the show & everything was perfect again just like it was supposed to be. 😊

Maybe not at the time, because it was the only thing my brother and I was allowed to watch at grandma's, but now it resonates with me. Something about the simplicity of it all; stories about a boy and his best friend.

I’m 64 and the Lassie theme song has haunted me since I was a kid.The shows episodes were very sentimental and featured baby animals or Timmy in various perilous situations where Lassie would save them at the last minute. It was an intensely sentimental and emotional show but I really loved it.

I didn't watch many black and white shows, but Lassie was a must. I get teary eyed myself during this theme song because it brings back so many great childhood memories that I can never experience again. Oh, what I would give to be 6 years old again, watching Lassie with my own dog at that time, sitting right beside me 😢

I was an 80's kid and grew up with shows like lassie, and mr. Ed.
I know what you mean with "a real childhood" comment.
When we were kids we didn't have constant tech "controlling" or "influencing" our lives.
We had morals and good upbringing with our parents and he we had wholesome shows like lassie to teach us about character and being a good person.

Is there anything more sacred than the bond of a boy and his dog? The friendship and loyalty these companions bring to our lives is impossible to match. My own pup lies just a few feet away, and has been diagnosed with an inoperable tumor. Listening to this theme song brings tears, but also the joy of having this dog in our life and home for 13 years. We will remember his love and devotion for the rest of our lives. When he goes, the oceans will be deeper from our tears.

When the Vet urged us to put him down six months ago, we prayed for just a little more time with him, as the love and determination in his eyes told us he wasn't ready to go. Incredibly, his tumor shrunk and he began eating and running again. Because of his age, we know our time left with him is short, but we're forever grateful for the small extension granted by the Lord.

Regal Lassie sitting there during the closing credits warms the heart, and when she lifts her paw, it is enough to break it, so at one are you with her. So we bought alot of snacks to enjoy ourselves while watching the parade. We were so dumb because we had bought alot of chocolate bars that were called Ex-Lax. You know, and I don't want to make a whole big thing about it or anything, but I believe that Lassie was one of the first dogs to go into space in the early 1960's. Not only was Lassie a great actor, but she was also a National Hero.

I used to have a very smart shepherd mix who would put her paw up when she wanted something. We called it "Doing Lassie." Then we got a younger male and darned if he didn't learn the same trick from her (not from me)! Dogs are so special. On a side note, and not to ruin the sweet nostalgic mood, I often wondered if Clayton Moore ever had to have his pants surgically removed.

To this day I don't get it. Why, if this is a happy opening about a wonderful dog, does this theme feel so sad and down? I mean I wanna cry every time I use to hear this as though it was a theme about a dead dog or something. Which growing up I found out that in a way I was right as the dogs they used in these were long since passed on when I saw this show in the 80s as a kid. But still, why so sad and beautiful.

My Mom used to loveeeee Lassie the actual dog in real life and poodles but more the poodle skirts. She use to tell how she had a whole bunch of pretty poodle skirts growing up but sadly when they stole everything from Her and My Grandma when My Grandma passed away she lost everything she had they even kept all her pictures and family memobilia and things that could identify that she was she.
We used to laugh together and often cried about stories we would share with one another. And I'm so Proud of who My Mom was and My Family. She was the Best and will always be the Mother I could ever had had in my life. She lives in all of us. 😭

This is how TV should be today to show today's children what TV and life was like wayvon back. Problem with today's TV is there is way far to much trash garbage made and all the good old TV gone.
