It also made me poop lol. Little did Chris know he made the first game for the horror genre in video games. Amnesia the dark descent? No. Ski Free gave me nightmares.
I still remember playing that game and seeing the yeti for the first time. My sister was watching me play, and when the yeti showed up, we both freaked out. I kept skiing but eventually got eaten. Then we just stared at each other for a bit, wondering what had happened. Then it became our quest to escape the yeti for as long as we could. We accidentally found the fast key by hitting all the keys we could.
This is one of my all time favorites. You can escape the snow monster by skiing past it with F toggled on. If you get far enough, it'll stop chasing you.
Weird coincidence - yesterday I found a 90s PC at the dump. Got it home and plugged it in to find that it still worked and booted into Win95. Rught on the root of the C: drive was SkiFree. Had a bit of fun playing it again after many years.
Duuuude my best friend Jaime and I played this all throughout the 90s and early 2000s; I can't even mention this game without those memories popping up. Takes me back to a much better time. Thanks for covering this little gem. I hope more youngsters learn about and play it. You can really get into a "zone" playing it.
You found my nostalgia. I played this on my aunt’s old laptop when I was like 4-5 years old. I never got past the yeti and have tried in vain to search for his game to see if it was possible to even get past it
I was quite young when i first played this, and I do remember a vague feeling of wonder associated to it. The mountain felt like this wide dynamic world I can just barely interact with. I guess that's what happens when a game is simple enough for your mind to fill the gaps.
90's kid here, when I was a kid that boogeyman/yeti and the dog crap, would always get me. I can remember skiing along making great progress then that yeti comes from the left side of the screen and just pwns me and I said "That's bullcrap!" Lol. Man. Time moves on.
This game is soo good, because it's humble, it doesn't have to tell a story but it still has mystery and awe to it. like, it has 3 game modes, it has moving trees, a carnivorous snowman, you can set fire to trees by going over them.. it's just a ton of fun
Definitely remember playing that game. Not at school though, as they were still using crappy green-screen RM Nimbus 186 machines up until I left in 1997. (yes, really. lol)
29 years ago played Ski Free on 286 at first time. And soon learned how to copy it alone without bothering about installing all Entertainment Pack. Because needed precious hard disk space for Stunts, LHX and Wolfenstein 3D. It was cool little time waster with funny effects.
Wow thanks for this vid. I am the same way, I can go years without thinking about this game till I see or hear about it and blam all those nostalgic feels comes back of playing the game as a kid and then the sudden urge to dig up the game and start playing it again.
Ah the nostalgia. It's videos like this that I love. They take me back to when I was a kid playing on my mothers Dell with Win 95... Thanks for taking me back to the good ol days.
Did it come built into all copies of Win95? It sure came with mine, on my first Windows home PC. I haven't thought about this amazing little game in... 19 years?! What a trip down memory lane!
This game may have been based on a real incident from 1950, where a skier going down Mt. St Helens was found dead after he entered Ape Canyon. He appears to have been chased down the mountain by some large creature.
I swear to God this happened! I thought this game was unbeatable that is to say never-ending. As a kid I remember that I was escaping the monster, dodging things left and right the screen picking up speed faster and faster and faster and faster going and going and going until eventually...my skier "took over" in a cut out fashion and skied out the bottom of the screen. The abominable snow man tantrummed and thumped his fists and legs and it had looked like, I won! The game had then restarted. I was a child playing on her mom's computer alone in the basement so I have 100% no one to vouch for me but I swear to God this happened! Did this happen for anyone else? Did they beat ski free? Was I a glitch in the matrix?
I had a friend in high school that hacked this game. He gave me a copy of it and played it on my home PC. Not sure if I’ve still got the hacked version. The hack is when the Yeti tried to attack you, instead of the Yeti eating the skier. The skier gets a sword out of his pocket and decapitates the Yeti. Also the trees have blood splatter on them some of the snow is yellow. That slows you down.
OH MY GOD... Kickstarter for Ski-Free 2.... Artificial Intelligence, Networked Multiplayer.. I mena.. just those things alone are enough to make me want to cream my nostalgic 90s multicolour pants.
Ski Free MMORPG, mixed with pills from Ski Runner. In Hard level monster appear just after start and you must escape from both him and dancing bananas. Luckily he will stop on a second to eat occasional slow pink girls and dogs... but he does that really fast.
Aw man, so many hours wasted on this game! Great video! How about a follow up of other similar Win 3.1 games, like Chip's Challenge or JezzBall? I think both were part of one MS Entertainment pack or another.
I remember first playing this game when I got a copy of Best of Entertainment in 1995 for my birthday. When ever I didn't have access to a Doom capable PC at Hampton University I would play my BOWEP games. I still have them and installed them to an XP virtual machine.
I remember playing this game in Middle and High School. And whenever the Abominable Snow Monster would jump up and down for joy after eating me, I would sarcastically say, “Yay YOURSELF, Mr. Bear!”
I loved this game when I was young. I used to play this game a lot on both my old Windows 98-era Packard Bell as well as my old Windows XP-era Dell. I've always loved the early 90s Microsoft Best of Entertainment games. I even still have the floppy it came with.
I remember playing this on a family friend’s computer as a kid. This game randomly Popped into my head and typed in “old skiing computer game” In google haha glad to find this video
Usually, I'd expect LGR to cover this type of game. What a surprise! I cannot tell you how much time I've spent playing this game back in grade school. The yeti was terrifying, but that didn't stop me from coming back for more. One of my earliest experiences with computers. 😊
Fuuuuuck. This brings back SOO many memories. Thanks for making this vid (and thanks youtybe for recommending it) i think I'll download this game again.
My first video game EVER was the Intellivision Skiing game. I was 3 and I played it at my grandmother's house (the system and game belonged to my uncle). I've been gaming ever since, including many hours on SkiFree.
I remember this, I don't even remember how it ended up on my family PC, but yet there it was, and I played it a lot back in the days along with 'Horace Goes Skiing' on the ZX spectrum. Nerd.... you've got to do "The Ultimate 8bit Skiing guide" your style.
OMG I remember playing this game on my grandmas computer in like, 2008, and I couldn't remember what game it was. I asked my sister is she remembered and she didn't, nobody knew what I was talking about. NOSTALGIA
I remember playing this on the RM Windows 95 machines in school back in the 90s, I never knew it was an entertainment pack, but it was the only decent game that that had for us to kids play. 😂
I never forgot this game. SkiFree, along with Digger, was one of my favourite games to play on my uncle's PC, which was running Windows 3.1 at the time. Other memorable games include Microsoft Flight Simulator (by Bruce Artwick) and Jezzball.
There were a whopping 350 titles on that old Global Star shareware disk, and this is the only one of the 350 that is still talked about today. I could not have predicted this outcome, though it _is_ intriguing...
Ha, I never forgot skiFree as it was the first game I ever played on a actual windows PC. I also have another freeware game called Rattler Race, which was a Tron clone in essence. Never knew a 32bit version had been made.
The computers at my Elementary School had one of the entertainment packs, which was a mistake. All of us kids just played SkiFree and Chip's Challenge lol
Cool!! I haven't seen this game since the mid 90's playing it on the computers in the school! Now I rememeber the name of the game! Thanks a lot and a very nice video!
It's not often nowadays for a game enthusiast to hear about a game they had no idea existed. For me today it was that there is a Microsoft The Best of Entertainment Pack for GBC. Truly weird.
LGR had a bit of play on this game a couple of weeks back. I guess you may have seen it and been reminded of an awesome retro game to review! good video.
OMG YES! this is the game that has been burned into my mind lately cause im kinda reminiscing my childhood at the moment and my goodness man i know this game is really isnt much but its very so to me cause i remember the yeti but for the live of me i couldnt remember the name until i ran into a twitch stream! even though i was born in 91 i think that i've known its existence somewhere around in my toddler-ish into young kid years visting someone in the family that had a pc that had this on it. man.. now my brain can rest for a while with this on it for the longest time for me lol
For me, this was a little game found on the Windows95 486 laptop my best friend gave me. Wish I had this video earlier, just to know it worked on windows 3.x so I'll be able to play it on my DosBox Win 3.1 installation... By the way, that same friend would run away from the monster with ease at least the two first times. But as the game says, the course never ends so it is impossible to "beat" the game. Also, while the first two times where easy for him (I must say he was the kind of guy who would beat any arcade with just one credit), I never saw him running from the Yety a fourth time and very rarely a third time, so I have a theory that it goes increasingly fast each time you encounter him.
I've only encountered the third Yeti once. Can't believe there're three. Dodging two Yetis is already difficult. One may stop chasing before suddenly popping back from the side of the screen you're skiing towards, lol.
Does anyone remember a 'game' where you controlled how many rabbits where in an area and then you could add a rabbit with mixi? was this all a dream? is this all a dream? am i dreaming now?
Who puts a video live at 3am?!
Nostalgia Nerd who's awake at 3am?!
I heard Columbo used to do it when he was on a ribena fueled bender.
You asking us or yourself? I get my best work done at 3am (when i'm not procrastinating on youtube)
I saw SkiFree and can't sleep anymore. Had to watch your video and (of couse) turn on my K6 and play it on win98
Weird people who are awake at 3am? :P
That yeti freaked me out SO much when I was a kid.
I Thought I'd be the Only one
Now we're three... Literally that yeti just shocked me the first time I played that I've never touched that thing again...
My cousins and I would take turns playing this and scream when the bear (we thought it was a bear) appears and starts chasing. Good times.
Me too bruv like wtf!!
It also made me poop lol. Little did Chris know he made the first game for the horror genre in video games. Amnesia the dark descent? No. Ski Free gave me nightmares.
For years I tried outrunning that thing.
I have the icon as my profile pic. Been that way for a few years, and since people seem to appreciate it, I'll not be changing it...EVER!
Gabe's YT I’ll believe it.
Gabe's YT we shall see about that
69th like
I hope you ski fast cuz the -yeti- abominable snow monster is there!
Hello. You still do
The abominable snowman really is weirdly iconic though noone talks about it. I can’t believe it runs on Windows 10, def gonna track this down
The renewed 32 bit version? Sure.
And in case the old one is your target and you got no real old hardware around there is DOSBox.
No one talks about it? The whole game was staying away from it!
You can run the original game in DOSBox.
The game drove me nuts back than that snowman pissed me off so much I raged now they have it on Edge on mobile
Fun time 😂
This is one of my all time favorites. You can escape the snow monster by skiing past it with F toggled on. If you get far enough, it'll stop chasing you.
Whhhhhaaaaattttt!!!!? Now I wish I could go back and do this
I love ski free. Getting eaten by the Yeti and running over dogs to get them to pee are the best. Playing with the numeric keypad is the best.
MontieMongoose Don’t forget getting the dead trees to catch on fire if you run over them repeatedly!
"Getting eaten by the Yeti and running over dogs to get them to pee are the best" without context is weird.
Weird coincidence - yesterday I found a 90s PC at the dump. Got it home and plugged it in to find that it still worked and booted into Win95. Rught on the root of the C: drive was SkiFree. Had a bit of fun playing it again after many years.
Idk why I just suddenly thought about this game. That Yeti definitely scared me as a kid
When you passed the trees with no leaves, they caught fire... It was very fun
When I was about 3 I started playing this game and my parents made me stop cause the snowman would give me nightmares
You found my nostalgia.
I played this on my aunt’s old laptop when I was like 4-5 years old. I never got past the yeti and have tried in vain to search for his game to see if it was possible to even get past it
I used to spend hours trying to find a way to evade the snowman. At one point I just gave up and concluded that this is impossible.
I remember playing this as a kid. The snowman scared the shit out of me 😆
I was quite young when i first played this, and I do remember a vague feeling of wonder associated to it. The mountain felt like this wide dynamic world I can just barely interact with.
I guess that's what happens when a game is simple enough for your mind to fill the gaps.
omg you just unlocked a childhood memory that i didn’t know i had , i was terrified of that monster lmaoo
Press F to -pay respects- go faster.
90's kid here, when I was a kid that boogeyman/yeti and the dog crap, would always get me.
I can remember skiing along making great progress then that yeti comes from the left side of the screen and just pwns me and I said "That's bullcrap!" Lol. Man. Time moves on.
I played the hell out of AAAALLL those games as a kid. My parents didn’t spend money on computer games.
This game is soo good, because it's humble, it doesn't have to tell a story but it still has mystery and awe to it.
like, it has 3 game modes, it has moving trees, a carnivorous snowman, you can set fire to trees by going over them.. it's just a ton of fun
To set fire to the trees and follow the dogs! What a lovely time!
One of my favorite memories of my childhood
I was scared of the abominable snowman but man is he adorable once he gets the hopping about screaming what looks like obscenities
Definitely remember playing that game.
Not at school though, as they were still using crappy green-screen RM Nimbus 186 machines up until I left in 1997.
(yes, really. lol)
Still using 186s in 1997!! That's ridiculous. Socket 7 Pentium 1s and slot 1 pentium 2 were available then.
Was the same at our school. We didn't get an xp pc til I left in 2003!
RM nimbus. What machines they were..
My high school was using 286 computers with turbo buttons up until I moved away in early 2000.
I remember my infant school having Windows 9X machines in 2003-6 (they might have upgraded by then, I can't 100% recall)
My school had apple 2e and macs. So i played alot of oregon trail and where in the world is carmen sandiego
This is a great trip down memory lane. Friends and I would snap screenshots of this game and make goofy GIFs with them. Good times.
29 years ago played Ski Free on 286 at first time. And soon learned how to copy it alone without bothering about installing all Entertainment Pack. Because needed precious hard disk space for Stunts, LHX and Wolfenstein 3D. It was cool little time waster with funny effects.
I dont know but these game with such graphics makes me happier than games of today....Old is gold
Wow thanks for this vid. I am the same way, I can go years without thinking about this game till I see or hear about it and blam all those nostalgic feels comes back of playing the game as a kid and then the sudden urge to dig up the game and start playing it again.

I remember watching this game in computer shops. Computers were really expensive back then.
Loved this game when I was young. Wish I still had a version. I beat the Abominable Snowman once! I'll never forget that.
I had a friend in high school that hacked this game. He gave me a copy of it and played it on my home PC. Not sure if I’ve still got the hacked version. Did you know there is Chip's Challenge on steam? There is also a Chip's Challenge 2!
*Chips motherf***ing Challenge* !!!!
Rattler race, rodents revenge, Howies tuneland. Classics!!
That game drove me insane never get pass the robot my grandma had a old Computer back than man Ski free was insane
What was that golf one?
I remember first playing this game when I got a copy of Best of Entertainment in 1995 for my birthday. When ever I didn't have access to a Doom capable PC at Hampton University I would play my BOWEP games. I still have them and installed them to an XP virtual machine.

I remember playing this at my mothers workplace, waiting for her to finish her shift. Fun times. 😁
I put so many damn hours into this game on my Mom's work computer in the early 90s!!!
ah, i loved this game as a kid
I remember playing this on a family friend’s computer as a kid. This game randomly
Popped into my head and typed in “old skiing computer game”

0:30 What WAS that game? I've been trying to remember the name for YEARS.
Fuji Golf.
Fuuuuuck. This brings back SOO many memories. Thanks for making this vid (and thanks youtybe for recommending it) i think I'll download this game again.
This game is a gem. Childhood classic for me :)

Holy shit. I completely forgot about SkiFree. Well, there goes the rest of my day.
How is this not the most trending nostalgic app
i remember playing this as a kid. the yeti would never fail to freak me out.
I never forgot this game. SkiFree, along with Digger, was one of my favourite games to play on my uncle's PC, which was running Windows 3.1 at the time.

Digger was DOS game tho. And too fast for playing if PC hadn't 8086 CPU or Turbo button.
Damn the memories..I used to love playing this and leisure suit Larry
Don't ever minimize the game while the yeti is on screen before he catches you.
Truly appreciate this video. I used to love this as a kid. My mom would play Jezzball and I would play Ski Free. Fond memories from a simpler time.
Heh, I spotted a Facebook post about SkiFree the other day in a retro gaming group. It's great to see it covered, I used to love playing it at school.
There were a whopping 350 titles on that old Global Star shareware disk, and this is the only one of the 350 that is still talked about today.
I could not have predicted this outcome, though it _is_ intriguing...
That's a rock, not a stump!!!
Excited for the inevitable Chip's Challenge video
Now this is some nostalgia
I cant believe how much that abominable snow man scared the shit outta my 5 year old mind..
Ha, I never forgot skiFree as it was the first game I ever played on a actual windows PC. I also have another freeware game called Rattler Race, which was a Tron clone in essence. Never knew a 32bit version had been made.
Ah, SkiFree. I had a lot of fun with this, although that monster use to terrify me when I was a kid!
Holy crap it redhotsonic
The computers at my Elementary School had one of the entertainment packs, which was a mistake. All of us kids just played SkiFree and Chip's Challenge lol
Cool!! I haven't seen this game since the mid 90's playing it on the computers in the school! Now I rememeber the name of the game! Thanks a lot and a very nice video!
my aunt said, I used to play this game with three. Also Super Mario DOS. It calmed me down, when mom went to work
It's not often nowadays for a game enthusiast to hear about a game they had no idea existed. For me today it was that there is a Microsoft The Best of Entertainment Pack for GBC. Truly weird.
We used to play this like in the 90s or something I was very young, could not remember the name of it until today. :)
I had forgotten all about this....got the memories flowing.
SkiFree was not only a classic game, but also the first file I ever sent someone over DCC on IRC.
Actually I found this game on an old floppy yesterday, Quite good timing for the video ;)
I remember going to Dixons with my parents as a kid in the early '90s and playing this on one of the display PCs.
Wow... I played the heck out of this :)
This is great. I truly enjoyed this game as a kid.
LGR had a bit of play on this game a couple of weeks back. I guess you may have seen it and been reminded of an awesome retro game to review! good video.
Ah grew up with this and Winter Olympics where you had to mash the spacebar xD
Oh my god I played this game so much when I was younger. Holy bringing me back nerd. Great video.
For me this was my first horror experience in a video game. xD
Lmao same
This was the game that was always played in the computer shops
Chip's Challenge.
OMG YES! this is the game that has been burned into my mind lately cause im kinda reminiscing my childhood at the moment and my goodness man i know this game is really isnt much but its very so to me cause i remember the yeti but for the live of me i couldnt remember the name until i ran into a twitch stream! even though i was born in 91 i think that i've known its existence somewhere around in my toddler-ish into young kid years visting someone in the family that had a pc that had this on it. man.. now my brain can rest for a while with this on it for the longest time for me lol

Ugh! The monster haunted my dreams. I wasn't even expecting it to appear out of nowhere and kill the skier.
I remember those MS Entertainment Packs :)
I've only encountered the third Yeti once. Can't believe there're three. Dodging two Yetis is already difficult. One may stop chasing before suddenly popping back from the side of the screen you're skiing towards, lol.
The main character looks just like the Nostalgia Nerd
True
I was addicted to it!
4:47 Damn, that Game Boy Color version of the snow monster be T H I C C. Must be that all fame and fortune .
Remember jumping the bare trees? That would make them catch fire!
Dude, that golf game was sick, too!
I had nightmares of the monster as a kid
Does anyone remember a 'game' where you controlled how many rabbits where in an area and then you could add a rabbit with mixi? was this all a dream? is this all a dream? am i dreaming now?
Please talk about other Windows games, such as Space Cadet pinball for Windows 95!
yo space cadet still works on Windows 10
