This was sung at every Requiem Mass until Pope John XXIII stopped the use of Latin. I feel like a young choirboy every time I hear this chant but oddly this sad chant gives me comfort.
Just a little comment. The Pope John XXIII was not who stopped with the use of Latin but Second Vatican Council (that is, approved by the plenary of cardenals, bishops, patriarchs, etc, after after the analysys in commission). Even so... this song is deeply inspiring.
@@nestor6565 It was neither John XXIII not the II Vatican. Quote from Vat.II document Sacrosanctum Concilium: "36. 1. Particular law remaining in force, the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites. 2. But since the use of the mother tongue, whether in the Mass, the administration of the sacraments, or other parts of the liturgy, frequently may be of great advantage to the people, the limits of its employment may be extended. This will apply in the first place to the readings and directives, and to some of the prayers and chants, according to the regulations on this matter to be laid down separately in subsequent chapters. 3. These norms being observed, it is for the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority mentioned in Art. 22, 2, to decide whether, and to what extent, the vernacular language is to be used; their decrees are to be approved, that is, confirmed, by the Apostolic See. And, whenever it seems to be called for, this authority is to consult with bishops of neighboring regions which have the same language. 4. Translations from the Latin text into the mother tongue intended for use in the liturgy must be approved by the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority mentioned above." As you can see it does not abolish latin, but unfortunately the modernists in the Church used this documents as an excuse to get rid of latin completely, something that Vat. II never demanded. That is why the proper interpretation of the council in accordance with the Tradition must be enforced.

I'm a Evangelical Christian ( still not an appropriate term, maybe protestant but still not accurate ) I believe our holy family on earth has been attacked multiple times by evil in the past causing separation and war amongst us. When I listen to these chants it just gives me another sense of peace. We are all in the family of Christ, even though we have different ways of reading and interpreting scripture, one thing is certain. God came made flesh. He died on a cross for all of us, and rose from the dead. I will extend love to all brethren, and I try to pray for my enemies, although truly a immensely difficult task, but our true war is with entities, not the flesh. May God bless you all, and I hope we all sing together before God in his Glorious kingdom come. The bottom line I guess is, Jesus is God, one of three people in one being. The singularity, the beginning and the end. May we all worship his greatness, his love, his glory over all that is or ever will be. For He is LORD. God bless you all. Love from Brazil
