That's because racism is far more prevalent in the south. I get that it sounds good to say that in the north they just hide it better, but the fact of the matter is that those in the north hide it because they know they won't fare as well by making their racism public.
Just look at the difference in how we vote: Trump won overwhelmingly in the south, particularly among white men. In the northeast, we saw a completely different outcome. Just in these past primaries alone, Bernie Sanders won in New Hampshire, in Vermont, and throughout the northeast.
To pretend that this doesn't matter -- that somehow we're just playing the long game up here -- is just plain bogus. Racism is certainly still way too common, but the south is despicable. There's no other way around it, and it's irresponsible (IMO) to claim that the only difference is in how they show it.
