  • Retrieving an Iron Pig from Askam Foreshore - Furness Iron History.
Here we retrieve a Pig-Iron from the foreshore of Askam-in-Furness. Once there was a mighty set of blast furnaces here at the Askam Iron works. Although constructed in 1855 by the Wakefield Mackinnin Co, the iron works was not put into productive blast until 1865 under the company banner of the Furness Iron and Steel Co....... no steel was ever produced at Askam however. The iron works here operated until 1918 and were then mothballed for 15 years before their demolition in 1933.
The pig-iron will be kept safe for display at Newland Iron Furnace as another example/variant of the principal product (locally sourced haemetite pig-iron) of this district for so many centuries past.
    Thanks for watching.

If anyone any recollections or memories they would like to share regarding the Iron Furnaces at Askam, please feel free to leave a comment under this video. Does anyone ever recall seeing an Askam pig? If so, was it sort of faceted along it's upper surface like the one in this video? Please share your memories here. Kind Regards.
