      This was the GOLD standard in instructional tapes in the day. Start licks was ok, but REH was much sharper. You could see Robin's fingers on each string. I remember I had just bought a new color TV and High-Fi VHS player... (wait for it)... $850 for the pair!! This video sold for $60-$80 depending on who was selling it. I would rent it for a week at a time for $4. Spent 27 hours a day playing it over and over again. This Fender Ultra guitar never sold that well and my local shop was blowing them out at $600 with the case! They were the PRS, before PRS made a name for himself.

    Wow! I was surprised to see how young he was for this presentation! He certainly grew to include more chordal scaling later in his career but those Jazz improvs are always icing on any Blues cake. I MISS the sound that only that Fender Master Series Guitar can make. I gave mine to my oldest son last year. I play it every time I visit him in L.A.

    • @BBQ1953
      @BBQ1953 3 роки тому +1

      You’re correct, Dimitris. Fender intended to make some inroad on the iron grip that Gibson had with their hollow body group of guitars. The Master series were brilliantly executed. I only wish Fender was run by luthiers instead of suits. The company quit making those guitars after only a few years. The guitars are extremely rare today.

      @@BBQ1953 btw that model is hollow?

    • @BBQ1953
      @BBQ1953 3 роки тому +1

      It has hollow bevels or channels running through the body, sealed inside. PRS makes one today that sounds similar but the neck on the PRS is chunky. That Fender is lean neck with wonderfully fast action and perfectly prepared frets.

      @karlwilson2021 4 роки тому +2

      You have a few options, you can use the same scale but land on the 4 when you go to the 4 chord, that sounds good. Or you can use the major pentatonic scale associated with the 4 chord, see what sounds good to your ears with this one. You can't really use the minor pentatonic associated with the 4 chord because the minor 3rd of that scale would be the b6 of the home key, which doesn't sound too good. On the 5 chord you can use major or minor pentatonic, mix them up!

      James Palermo This was recorded in 1990 & came out in 1991. Still got the old VHS tape & standard notation + tablature cookbook. Then came "The blues & beyond"about 18mth's later. Still got that too.
      After classical lessons since five I'm so glad to have come across those classics, pre-interweb. And this was down in Australia. Using the round edge of the plectrum/pick, comping properly etc made a lot of potential "mistake correcting" unnecessary when I got a one2one teacher for modern guitar. Robben Ford has always been the man.

    Hate to criticise the almighty, but the Bb over a G7 functions as a sharp 9, rather than a flat 3. What a player though.

    I realize this sounds hugely arrogant and Robben obviously makes it work but if you only play the Gm pentatonic on the C chord you will be leaving out the 3rd, E of the C chord, E is not part of the Gm pentatonic and it is a important chord tone, if you only play the G minor pentatonic over the D chord then you will be leaving out the A of the D chord which the 5th, another important chord tone....I'm just saying.

      True, but even though he mightn't have mentioned the major thirds, he plays them all through the solo in the video, e.g. the lick in bar 5 where he outlines the F7 chord nicely by bending from G (the second of F) up to A (the major third) at the start of the bar before going to the fifth, sixth and flat seventh of F and back to the fifth so that he's on C when the next bar moves to C7.

    I used to not know who he was and hearing his name just assumed he was a woman. Now I know why I didn’t know who he was. His influences are exactly the people who make jazz and blues seem incredibly boring and some of the most commercial jazz, ie take five, that sounds the very most like origins of dreadful smooth jazzers like Kenny G. A guitarist could go their whole life without hearing him play and miss absolutely nothing. And BB King- he is good but if i watch a concert I want to see BB King not 20 other random guys who sit on stage and play 90% of the solos. And Dumble amps… overrated, overpriced, and IMO sounds worse than average. His music is not rhythmic, it’s not moving, it doesn’t make me want to move, it doesn’t make me feel anything, it’s just “pretty.” It has none of the passion, it’s basically the watered down white version that was made to sell albums; except he obviously didn’t do a good job of selling anything except interest in ridiculously pompous amplifiers.
    And btw- listening to his voice, and abnormally puffy upper torso, and I am still not sure that he isn’t a woman. In old age he has bit of resemblance to Kaitlin. Not sure exactly where it’s common for men to talk like this certainly nowhere I ever went. Must be one of the places where those tough holy rolling southerners stem from. The kind of guys who confuse loving Jesus for being attracted to images of a muscular long haired ancient rock star lol.

      OK. Why are you bothering to post here then if you don't like it (unless you're a troll)? Why don't you just watch UA-cam videos you like instead of wasting your time and everyone else's time by posting nasty shit here?
