1999 New York Knicks

  • Prior to the lockout-shortened 1998--99 season, the Knicks traded Starks in a package to the Golden State Warriors for 1994's 1st team all league shooting guard Latrell Sprewell (whose contract was voided by the Warriors after choking Warriors' head coach P. J. Carlesimo during the previous season), while also trading Charles Oakley for Marcus Camby. After barely getting into the playoffs with a 27--23 record, the Knicks started an improbable postseason run. It started with the Knicks eliminating the #1 seeded Heat in the first round after Allan Houston bounced in a running one-hander off the front of the rim, high off the backboard, and in with 0.8 seconds left in the deciding 5th game. This remarkable upset marked only the second time in NBA history that an 8-seed had defeated the 1-seed in the NBA playoffs. After defeating the Atlanta Hawks in the second round four games to none, they faced the Pacers yet again in the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite losing Ewing to injury for the rest of the playoffs prior to Game 3, the Knicks won the series (aided in part to a four-point play by Larry Johnson in the final seconds of Game 3) to become the first eighth-seeded playoff team to make it to the NBA Finals. However, in the Finals, the San Antonio Spurs, with superstars David Robinson and Tim Duncan, proved too much for the injury-laden Knicks, who lost in five games. The remarkable fifth game of this Finals is remembered for its 2nd half scoring duel between the Spurs' Tim Duncan and the Knicks' Latrell Sprewell, and was decided by a long jumper by Avery Johnson with less than 10 seconds left to clinch the title for the Spurs.

This squad deserved a ring, they played so hard, if Ewing never got hurt I honestly feel like they would’ve won, in the finals they were so undersized, they were already one of the shortest teams in the league, when u got a 6’5 Larry Johnson guarding a 6’11 Tim Duncan it’s a big mismatch, and LJ still produced, If it was any other team they would’ve won

Don't know if they would have beaten the Spurs but if they had Ewing they would have made it a more competitive series possibly forcing it to go full 7.

Frank Williamson camby couldn’t handle Robinson, Robinson was tossing him and then when Dudley would come in he would just foul him

Our 99 team was stacked. The Knicks weren't gonna beat us. Ewing was good but not in his prime. With healthy Ewing it could go 6 but its not even going 7. If this supporting cast was around Ewing in 92-94 then maybe they'd win it all. But nobody was beating the Spurs in 99

When Allan Houston hit that shot, I nearly went through my mama's roof! These 90's Knicks were everything. And of course, this brings a tear to my eyes because I always rooted for Allan Houston to succeed and "The Shot" propelled the Knicks into Stardom that year and forever more. He saved many careers with that shot....his own and as quiet as its kept...Van Gundy coaching job as well............

It was a fun series against New York seeing my Spurs win they're first of 5 championships in 1999. That kincks team in 1999 was a solid team and not 100% but was still dangerous. The Spurs had came into the finals with only one loss in the playoffs.. after beating the Timberwolves 3-1 and sweeping the Lakers and blazers in the always tough western conference... There was no way they were going to lose in the finals to the Knicks.

It's sad that most Knick fans, including myself, would settle for a playoff appearance. I think they have a chance to contend for division titles in a few years b/c Boston is old, but only if they get a better PG. People talk about Carmelo Anthony, but he's not going to get you a championship, he doesn't play defense.

  • @nachosjuan
    @nachosjuan 15 років тому

What you talking about man. The whole point is that in theory they shouldn't have even got past the 1st round, but they did and it was the greatest playoff run ever by any team. They were a tough hard team man and you have to respect them for their effort. I watched all of their playoff games that season, it was awesome.

Even 93 if it wasn't for Jordan, they probably could have won a title. Out of all those playoff teams the Knicks were in the 90s, the 92-93 Knicks were the best of all of them and they got to the ECF that year, which was far into the playoffs than the previous playoff Knicks teams. 92-93 and 93-94 were the best years for the Knicks to win.

What I mean by "they shouldn't have got past the first round" is the Heat won the first series. If the second half of Game 5 had been officiated properly, the Heat would've had a 12-15 point lead in the late 4th instead of 1. Houston made a great shot but he shouldn't have had the chance. I won't deny that the '99 Knicks were a great story, but the truth is, the Heat won that Game 5. And if that happened as it should have, this team wouldn't be any more remembered than most 8 seeds.

Who would’ve thought james dolan once he took over as solo owner next year would begin the process of turning the Knicks from a contender into a laughing stock which they still are today because of his narcissistic attitude? Under his leadership, this is how the Knicks have done since.
    5 winning seasons
    6 playoff appearances
    16 losing seasons
1 playoff series win in the last 20 years
    1 Atlantic Division title win
    4 first round exits.

I literally came to post the same thing! Nobody has those games! I remember reading in a fitness book that the Atlanta Hawks had donuts in their locker room during Game 1 of that series, while the Knicks had bran muffins in theirs, and the series was a landslide from there . Major 0-4 upset and the Hawks franchise did not recover for a long, long time.

    • @TRJ2241987

Game 4 of the Hawks/Knicks series was actually a pretty legendary moment in Knicks history too....that was the game where seemingly the entire 20,000 MSG crowd began chanting "JEFF VAN GUNDY" and would not stop. All through that regular season there were rumors that Jeff Van Gundy would not be rehired. That was the game where the people of New York city showed they were fully behind Van Gundy, and management decided to stick with him. The Knicks had a much better regular season in 1999-00, I remember Saturday Night Live even airing a cartoon depicting a Lakers/Knicks 2000 NBA Finals but it was not to be.

    • @asifchowdhury8005

TRJ2241987 Wow, thanks for sharing such a great moment in time during Knicks history. Man, there has to be a way to see at least some clips/highlights from that series. Maybe MSG or other Networks have rights to some clips, that they can possible release to the public?
If the series was indeed broadcasted, surely someone had to record it on VHS? We don't even have shitty VHS quality of the highlights lol.
