I like the idea of a free Hawaii whether it is a republic or a monarchy but what I'd like to see before that is a flourishing of Hawaiian language in everything from folk culture to pop culture; that's something they could take from us Latinos in the US. Use your mother tongue tell folk stories, write rocks songs, publish books, think it all and do it all in Hawaiian also dub anything from the State of the Union to any and all English shows.

My wife and I visited Kauai last week. We have visited Hawaii 4 times since 1988.
    We will never visit again.
We witnessed repeated anger from Hawaiians, declaring their desire for independence.
I tried to better understand this, watched a PBS interview of 4 people expressing their desire for independence, with an ultimate goal of returning all land to the native peoples.
I felt very guilty about the way the US Government stole control of the Islands. The guilt was so extreme that my vacation was far from relaxing. I will never return, and in-fact, I would vote YES tomorrow for a vote to remove Hawaii from US Statehood.
I wish I could do more to help the Hawaiians regain their lands. For now, the best I can do is to no-longer support the Mega Corporations that have grabbed land from the native peoples, my family and I will look for other destinations for family vacations in places that have not so unfairly treated people. Honestly, these days that is getting harder and harder to achieve.

John SaintsSoft Dear John. Hawaii is part of the union.
it belongs to the United States of America.
These 4 people who appeared on PBS are mix-blooded.
Those who claims "Hawaiians", most of them have very little hawaiian bloods in them.
Most of them are 3/4 or 7/8 or 15/16 of non-hawaiian blood. (Caucasians, japanese, Chinese, Filipino etc etc)
Hawaii will fall into poverty if it is no longer part of the United States.
Tourists will no longer be willing to the place where there is so much political turmoil.
      Get over with, John.
      Stop liberal political correctness.

I don't think that ties to the US is what is keeping us from poverty.

i 100% agree, the way the US stole the islands was immoral & net effect no different than slavery. So i will stop patronizing a system of slavery & i pray the islanders get their independence. If they prefer to live more simply (see Tonga) then that's 100% their decision.
USA should also pay reparations to all blacks that can trace heritage to slavery, then follow that with a new constitutional convention only this time both women and minorities will have a say in how we construct our laws. First to go will of-course be citizenship for corporations, these evil institutions which now have all the natural rights of humans, but which never die and in-effect are immortal, are the modern incarnation of Vampires - all the rights & powers of humans, with superior strength & power and who can never die (short of 1oz high velocity silver slug or a sharp stick in the chest).
Other than that, i have no opinion.

Hawaii, where I was born, has been close to my heart always. The culture of Hawaii, has been Disneyfied by the media, making it cute, but not serious in any way, a shame. I find Hawaiian culture to be as rich as the Greeks, as beautiful as Celtic Culture and as spiritual as the Native Cultures of the Americas. I Love Hawaii and it's people, and hope that Hawaii never quits it's strides toward a revitalization of it's unique and rich culture.

What is used as the "State" flag today was originally the flag of the Hawaiian kingdom. The flag is a fine Koa wood floor that has been hidden under a hideous and fashion-fleeing carpet.

Hawaii is far and away better off than Tonga. I know many Tongans that live here in Hawaii and all wanted badly to leave Tonga for a better life in America. Primarily for educational opportunities for their children. I'm not justifying the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom but to elevate Tonga to Hawaii's status in terms of standard of living, economic opportunity, health care etc... is grossly misguided. All Tongans I have met here in Hawaii would trade Hawaii for Tonga any day.

Tonga is a poor kingdom. They are asking china and other countries for hand outs. Look at the 2019 Pacific games, they could not afford it or have the facilities to hold the games. The fact of being the only remaining kingdom is all good but the kingdom does not have the resources to better the lives of its commoners.

@@shin-ishikiri-no I disagree totally. I would say US has a higher standard of living. We have a higher per capita GDP. Japanese citizens work more and get paid less. US also lead the world in internationalization. We let in over 1,000,000 legal immigrants a year and many who come here illegally are allowed to stay. How many immigrants does Japan allow in a year?

    • @shin-ishikiri-no
      @shin-ishikiri-no 4 роки тому

@@Champstarrable Have you ever lived in Japan? If not, then your "disagreement" is just a baseless opinion.
The work culture in Japan is largely self-imposed, and as such it means that Japanese voluntarily go along with it, because a lot of them like to "keep up with the Tanakas." There are some that don't follow this trend, and they tend to gravitate towards more modern work environments or become entrepreneurs.
Almost every aspect of Japanese society is more civilized than the US. In fact, some might argue it's *too civilized*, which could explain Americans suddenly realizing how loud, awkward and clumsy they are upon arrival (and they very often are). Japanese people are generally self-motivated, calm, and have a realistic outlook on human nature. The islands are not inhabited with a lot of non-Asians, so the few that are here will get noticed, but acts of violent racism are almost completely unheard of. Basically, despite any silent prejudices, if you speak at least 80% fluent Japanese, you have a Japanese passport or Permanent Residency, and you're not a part of any suspicious religious groups or the Yakuza, you'll be able to do everything a native can. Possibly more, if you don't look ethnic Asian. The only caveat to this might be major political roles, such as Prime Minister. I've even seen Japanese-African police officers (admittedly only two).
Japan is especially more civilized with regards to public order and law enforcement. Japan doesn't have police asking for your ID and then shooting you 5 times when you went to grab for it. Sure, guns aren't standard for day officers, but they don't beat suspects with batons either.
In Hawaii, homeless are shuffled around the islands and terrorized for sleeping basically anywhere. In Japan, they are a lot kinder to the few homeless they have so long as they keep their sleeping areas tidy. Go to any 24hr McDonalds in Japan at 3AM and you'll see a mix of people studying, eating, and taking naps. No violent and aggressive police are being called for homeless catching Z's in public so long as they aren't causing trouble or inhibiting business. If the homeless in the US that arrive on Oahu are worse to have around, then that's just a further testament to the cultural inferiority of the United States.
Both nations have their bad points, but in terms of being "civilized" the United States isn't even in the top 10. Japan is number one. S.Korea is further up the list than the USA. Hawaii should NOT be emulating the "mainland..." In fact, that is one of the core problems with Hawaii (Hawaiian Kingdom). Too much US influence. For starters, Hawaii needs to stop using US-style vehicles which are too big and fuel inefficient. Japan's 軽自動車 (keijidousha) are far superior for island life. Second, public toilets...!! Oahu especially needs that, as business owners are basically intolerant of anyone taking a whizz in their establishment. In Japan, I can go to any 24hr convenience store to use a lavatory. Free of charge.
In terms of GDP and getting paid "less" well you first have to consider values. I can go and live in a ghetto and improve my disposable income by a 40% margin, but I'm still living in the ghetto... Do I want to be in the ghetto, or am I willing to pay a premium for a safe environment with modern transportation infrastructure (bullet trains allowing quick, seamless travel to any part of the nation), decent intelligent people (even if a bit boring), healthy food, etc? That additional income you speak of is basically to offset the cesspool of the US "mainland" environment. I could be filthy rich in Papua New Guinea, but is it worth it? I'd say no.

Hawaii has no treaty of annexation and therefore doesn't need to justify their sovereignty. There are still treaties in existence that were signed with Britain, France and Japan recognizing the sovereignty of Hawaii as a nation in 1843. I am not a Hawaiian citizen. Federal recognition does nothing but prove to the U.S. that we are/were a state/territory needing “their” permission to become independent. Plus we already are internationally acknowledged as an independent state/nation.

    • @adamlevy8971

I'm a supporter of Hawaiian sovereignty, but in all practicality, the US has a superiority of force, and regards Native Hawaiians as its own citizens. It would be much more pragmatic for the Hawaiians to get federal recognition with the benefits that come with it and then from there work to gain sovereignty. The black Americans cheered on the Emancipation Proclamation, which was a huge step forward for them, but continued to work towards a more just society. Unless there is an "end of claims" clause in the federal recognition agreement, I see only positives.

U.S. belligerent occupation is a war crime and a breach of treaties. No treaty of annexation is a legal issue. You are correct Ka'iama IS only one on the panel that knows what he's talking about. The Hawaiian Kingdom does have U.S. Federal International recognition already as peer to U.S.A. The Federal domestic/internal recognition is for a Native Hawaiian American tribe. Secy of interior and U.S. Congress have plenary authority over tribes.

I hope Hawaiians will reach self-government and independence. In the meantime, get rid of as much christian influence, buildings, and indoctrination as possible. The christian ideological cancer spread throughout the Pacific cultural areas of Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, the Philippines, and the aboriginal areas of Taiwan. It is an inhumane form of mindless belief, disrespectful of local cultures, elders, and women. Larry, Taiwan

Hawaii has become the most militarized state in the US.Seems very unlikely that US will ever consider giving it back.I beleive that Hawaiians could become sovereign in the way the Amish have.Hawiians need help getting off the tit of the US.Educate your own, starting with the language, childrens education, farming, fishing, hunting, building, natural medical care, history, ancient culture, etc.Focus on living a life as a sovereign people and less on political sovereignty.I believe this would strengthen the Hawaiin people which could lead to a chance of political sovereignty. And stay loving above all, hating will inhibit political sovereignty not enhance it.

There are many thoughts, we are making those changes to take care of all the people now in Hawaii...but they have to know, even if 85% are not Hawaiian, they come from somewhere, they need to search their hearts of hearts to choose who you are and where you came from...maybe you need to go back there to help your country...have you thought about that? if not, please do and take a minute to be honest within yourself for the sake of yourself, your family and friends.

The Inoue surname was adopted by Koreans pretending to be Japanese. There is no such thing as Japanese but Koreans and Koreans occupied the island now known as Japan and committed genocide against the Ainus, the island's indigenous people.
Therefore, the Japanese living in the U.S. are actually ethnic Koreans, just like the Japanese living in Japan.

Points taken but even with all the terrible problems facing native Hawaiians high rates of incarceration, homeless, etc. They are far better off than Filipinos or Cubans today. I think Native Hawaiians worry to much about what they may have lost and not enough about what they have. Just my opinion.

Filipinos have their land. Their languages, religions, and culture weren’t eradicated. But the U.S. did screw the Philippines in a totally different way. Hawaiians are homeless because they’re being forced off their own lands by rich outsiders. It’s the same reason more Hawaiians live on the American continent than the islands. Cuba is a totally different situation.

Semantically, and legally, there is no such thing as nation within a nation; it's belligerent occupation and the Hawaiian Kingdom still exists. Hawaiian tribe culls majority of the Hawaiian Kingdom subjects and applies the doctrines of Manifest Destiny.

On June 27, 1959, a referendum asked residents of Hawaii to vote on the statehood bill; 94.3% voted in favor of statehood. Therefore Hawaii is now legally part of the United States of America. Case Closed.

Wrong during that vote no hawaiians could vote plus over 95% of the population was u.s.a. citizens, not citizens of the hawaiian kingdom. Like i said citizens of the hawaiian kingdom was banned from voting so, no treaty, no land, case close, welcome to the hawaiian kingdom.

@@Ian-808 You wrong brah. The question on the ballot was:"Shall Hawaii immediately be admitted into the Union as a state?" Yes or No? All Hawaiians were allowed to vote. No one was discriminated against or not allowed to vote. Whoever told you that Hawaiians could NOT vote lied to you brah. Years prior to the vote, had Hawaii’s monarchy been overthrown by force? Yes. Was Hawaii illegally occupied and annexed? Yes. But Hawaii had the opportunity to correct that in 1959. That was the time to reclaim sovereignty or revolt. But the people spoke and chose statehood. Now, there is no going back. The Civil war settled that question. There can be no succession. Once you are in the Union you are in for life! Ride or die, USA!!!
