As a dentist I believe that diet and meal frequency is central and the thoroughness of brushing/flossing . I don't use fluoride . Mouth breathing /xerostomia also can have negative effect.
I work in dental field, whenever a patient asks me about fluoride, I tell them, “according to the American Dental Association…”. If they catch on and ask, what do you use? Then I tell them, that I don’t use fluoride in any form. I filter all drinking water and do not brush with store bought toothpaste, etc. I have to recommend fluoride, diet changes, proper oral hygiene in order to maintain my license.

This is so interesting. Every symptom that was mentioned I had as child. I was told by numerous dentists that my mouth was too small for all my teeth. Some were removed to make room. Also, somewhere along the way I began to sleep with my mouth closed. Good thing is that my tongue rests in the top of my mouth with the tip pressed behind my front upper teeth. So much to know about all of this, and so few know about it. Good interview Mike.

I’m the same age as Mike, and I’ve never been a chronic mouth breather. I was hyperactive as a kid and diagnosed with ADHD, and of course medication through amphetamines was the only proposed solution. Looking back on it now I realize it was because I was under-stimulated physically, and very rarely was exposed to play and exercise to the point of exhaustion. If I had more physical activity in my daily routine, I guarantee that it would have been easier to focus, sit still, and listen to the teacher; basically act like a girl.
Mike I'm grateful to you and Dr Whitman for this podcast. Especially the information and research towards the use of fluoride. Over here in the U.K they are pasting a fluoride paste onto the back teeth of our children when they visit the dentist. My daughter had this once, didn't like it at all. She said she could still taste this weeks later. I then looked into this and decided not to agree to this being carried out. The dentist was not happy at all and really didn't understand my decision. I was questioned as to why I decided to disagree with this process. My answer, it's a neurotoxin. I was then told that it would have to be noted down that I had disagreed to this treatment. I'm sure that WE are the people that decide what happens to our OWN children.
The way that medical professionals in all fields think that they own you is disgusting. Because of this attitude, as well as their horrible track record in solving health problems, I've grown to really hate medical professionals. @@whitemakesright2177 this is why I decided I wouldn’t go to medical school unless/until the world greatly changes. Doctors aren’t free-thinkers, they’re generally ideologues. Advanced schooling breeds ideologues, imo.
@@ZacksRockingLifestyle I agree completely. I've found doctors and nurses to be some of the most ideological people in the world. I think medical school in particular filters out free thinkers, even more than other parts of academia.
City of Calgary, in Alberta, had water fluoridation removed many decades ago, but those that are for it, have never stopped pushing. On our last municipal election, the was a plebiscite in which 51% voted to bring back fluoridation to our drinking water. I do not consent to being medicated :(
Fascinating discussion on relatively under reported yet extremely impactful health issues. I think most people, myself included, really had no idea how serious this could get. Excellent job, once again. Hopefully, this information will reach those who are affected by this.
Been suffering with a blocked nose for weeks! I started having more honey and ginger. I also did this sonam exercise daily to help clear the blocked nose. It's day 3 and I have been able to close my mouth. It's not perfect but it's a daily practice!
Have you considered using capsaicin spices to clear your airway? I can understand honey for soothing a severely burnt or scarred throat, but not to reduce mucous and airway congestion. Sugar is absolutely terrible for our ability to breathe and heal our body. Sugar also stimulates mucous production, last I knew. Honey is essentially pure sugar. I used to have severe asthma. I stopped consuming sugar, including and especially honey, and my breathing has greatly improved. I’ve also lost 160lbs or so.
You might also do a little elimination diet to see if there’s a specific food triggering the congestion. Dairy is my nemesis for that one. And I used to have a lot of allergies two different foods and household chemicals and even water… And that happened pretty suddenly after getting certain kinds of shots before nursing school, and those cleared up with some meridian therapy. All but the dairy one. I later discovered from DNA testing that I just don’t do dairy well, so I limit it when I want to breathe through my nose!
Closely related to this topic of the oral microbiome is the use of mouthwashes and how it destroys the good bacteria and hinders the production of Nitric Oxide which improves blood flow and reduces blood pressure! Also read that *humming* and breathing technique (mediation) can help improve nitric oxide production. I learn something new everyday.
We were given fluoride packs at my school several times a year in my 4th and 5th grade years. This was in the 90s. These were the same.2 years that I started having tics and was diagnosed mild-moderate severity Tourette Syndrome. I always wondered if the fluoride was a contributing factor in this.
@@niellalien yeah, they came in plastic pouches and were labeled, "fluoride". You'd tear the top off, then swish it around in your mouth like mouthwash.

I am a lifelong mouth breather. I have terrible allergies and my nose is always clogged. Yes, I get treatment for it, but it only helps to a degree. Thanks for the info!
I had that issue when younger and didn’t know mouth breathing was wrong! Mine was chronically clogged and ended up getting a septoplasty and turbinatplasty where they removed all that tissue! I regret that now…
The nasal passageway has a “use it or lose it property”. The bad news is your history has caused it to clog up, the good news is you can get it open again if you work toward it. Check out Oxygen Advantage on youtube for a lot more information. There’s an interesting technique they teach where you pinch your nose, hold your breath, and shake your head side to side and it clears your nasal passageway immediately but temporarily.

Young dentist from Germany here. I am at the very beginning of my "career" and can only attest to how universities are brainwashing the upcoming generations of dentists. We are trained to become biased repairmen and "educate" our patients mostly about fluoride or switching from sugar to whole grains. I remember once asking my former perio-professor, about his opinion on the change of our food's consistency and its effect on our gum and teeth health. He's very big on grains, fruits and nuts - not meat or eggs, though, because it's pro-inflammatory and cholesterol bla bla - and sort of viewed himself as a god of nutrition (I could not stand him, quite frankly). He did not even make the slightest effort to think and find an answer, but quickly continued his lecture. Mind you, I surely did not learn about this topic in uni, but through a video by What I've Learned. The entire system is a mess and only knows or accepts one narrative. In German, we informally call this "Leitlinien-Medizin" (= guideline medicine). This talk with Dr. Staci was eye opening and fortified my feeling that whatever we were being taught in uni is weird, mostly outdated and can only provide literal band aid medicine in the form of fillings, root canal treatments, prostheses or mouthguards for bruxism. Thank you so much. I'd like to encourage anyone to respectfully question their dentist's recommendations and treatment plans. Yes, fillings etc. still have their place, but as with everything else nowadays, vigilance on both sides is necessary.
No offense but your instructor sounds old. Lol I'm surprised the instructor did not talk about crunchy foods for periodontal ligament health. Evidence based medicine or leitlinien medizin is odd in that it incorporates the preferences of professionals and patients/clients. Prevention is big in other countries for dentistry right now, usually in the form of dental hygienists. But the one narrative, or profession's positions is to prevent garbage medicine. Things do change over the years for example amalgam is rare now, as is gross scaling or root planing "diseased" cementum... but dietary recommendations are typically government mandated with dental avoidance of cariogenic foods like sugar. Your English is fantastic.
Oh I wanted to add, your advice on questioning recommendations is excellent! That is a massive shift in dentistry in North America with regard to no longer calling them patients, but instead clients. The old way with patients was paternalistic, commanding... Clients means they have an equal partnership towards health promotion. Older professionals still cling to the old ways, I hope you strive to follow the client partnership perspective and involve your patients as deciding making parties in their health.
_"...I like everyone to know that I was a dentist who promoted fluoride; I was taught and trained very conventionally and it was up for vote in Portland ... and I was on the pro-fluoride campaign and I was picketing and wore the buttons and all the swag and everything. Now, why was that? Well, it's really because I hadn't done the work and I was just taking information that had been fed to me in dental school without ever questioning it, without ever looking at the other side or what the controversy was; and I would become very impassioned about this, that fluoride is saving lives, you know. But then I went to a debate and I remember hearing the opponents and things ...that I had never heard before in dental school, never had I heard about neurotoxicity and how this was having an impact on our children and so it really made me take a step back and look at a bigger picture and then I personally started digging into the research...." ._ This describes so well why the vast majority of medical professionals unquestioningly accepted the official soztoo narrative and are only now gradually waking up to the mounting evidence and open admissions by the double-yoo aitch oh et al. about so many aspects that were for one reason or another got wrong: safety and effectiveness of things applied, origins or things, advisability of smothering mouths and cowering indoors, vulnerability of young and healthy people and so on and so on.
As a person that has an unknown amount of cavities in my mouth and one 3/4 crown. I will say that the largest factor in preventing cavities for me was quitting soda. I brush less now and have very few new cavities in comparison.
One aspect related to the tongue position is also our overall physiology - our posture and especially tech-neck and forward head- posture that positions our jaw, but also tongue. Our musculature that holds our body is weakened and totally de-arranged due to not enough physical activity and sitting all day in a wrong position... Rarely see a person with straight back and long neck nowadays.
I can’t breath through my nose and use to breath out of my mouth as a kid until a fly flew in. My face is long as a result. I tried mouth taping and feel like I get better sleep.
I once had a fluoride treatment at the dentist's office when I was four or five. Some how, during the treatment someone turned the light out thinking no one was in the room. I was so small, I couldn't be seen in the chair. It was a long while before anyone noticed. I just sat there, with my mouth full of fluoride, for who knows how long.

Dr Whitman or any professional- Since one problem is that we don’t chew as much compared to our ancestors who chewed 4 hours per day, would u recommend chewing gum 4 hours a day as a way to improve jaw and breathing health? Maybe to improve facial aesthetics too?
@GymBum because doctors, nutritionists, and dieticians are brainwashed into telling people that going vegan fixes everything. I was vegan for a while, getting sicker and sicker because the "experts" said it was best, and red meat causes heart disease, colon cancer, HBP, etc. I finally got certified as a nutritionist, and saw the studies for myself (not just the biased conclusions that most docs have the time to read, but the WHOLE studies) and realized every "conclusion" was bought and paid for by grain companies, pharmaceutical companies, and others that stand to benefit if we remain sick. My whole family tries to "save" me from my new red meat daily diet with increased salt everytime they see me, but my HBP is finally coming down. Everything they tell us to do for health is opposite from the truth.
@GymBum Well, some people have deviations in their gut biome and/or chemical processes in the brain. I had to cut out (cow) products because they were causing me intense depressive episodes when I ingested them; butter being the worst. Took me a long time to figure out what was causing it, but to explain why is a mystery. Maybe I had Alpha-Gal at some point, or I have some gut biome anomaly. I honestly don't know. Once I cut out the butter and red meat, everything got better. I stick to eggs and coconut as the main sources of doing a higher fat diet
@GymBum why was I ever 330 pounds? Because I didn’t know better, my parents didn’t know how to feed me better, my school told me to eat “balanced,” “sugar is necessary for brain health” etc I can’t have been the only one.
I'm glad the drinking water where I live isn't fluoridated. I've been anti-water fluoridated since the early 2000s and most people thought I was a loony conspiracy theorist. I'm glad more people are now seeing the light.
I like how they talk about being open to new developments doing the research and the data unbiased approach and then making a decision. I remember getting the flouride rinse at dentist as last step after cleanings. I cut flouride out about five years ago. I also have trouble breathing through my nose. Interesting how we are more pron to cavities as mouth breather
I grew up in the first city in the US to fluoridate their water: Norfolk, VA. I don’t think it helped my cavities much. But my diet wasn’t all that great either. Did it make me dumb. Probably. I did end up graduating from an R1 engineering school just shy of a B average and went on to get a phd in engineering and an MS in food science. But going to a good dentist as a kid taught me good dental hygiene and 65 years later my current dentist says I have great teeth. Too many variables out there to pin things on fluoride only - in all cases. YMMV.
Fluoride in water can only help the developing teeth of a fetus. Topical fluoride (toothpaste, fluoride dental treatments) can make teeth stronger against acid (from diet, or bacteria excrement). Acid is what creates cavities.
@subtropical ken topical fluoride also does not hurt the body. Because you spit it out, and the formulation is not reactive in the body, or insoluble. Interesting enamel is a 6 point crystalline formation... fluoride when remineralized into enamel makes the molecular bonds stronger against acid erosion. Thus reducing cavitation into the crystalline structure via acids. Most water fluoride isn't too problematic for adults, because of the low quantity and type (sodium fluoride)... it is the naturally occurring fluoride (soluble fluoride, and high uncontrolled quantity) we need to get out of our water. I filter all my water normally. I like to think of fluoride like salt..... too much is clearly a problem but technically you still need some... leaded salt is bad, stick with safe versions in safe quantities and you are good.
Fluoride was put in the water because someone figured out how to make money out of a toxic waste they previously had to pay massive amounts of money to safely dispose of.
The swollen adenoids are what’s causing the difficulty breathing nasally during sleep. Dairy and wheat are the root causes….but any food that the child has an allergy to can cause the inflammation. Taping is an excellent way to combat the developing malformation in the face, jaw and airway. My son began mouth breathing while exclusively nursing. Turned out, he has a huge dairy allergy and I was consuming dairy foods while breastfeeding transferring that protein through my milk.
I feel like Mike should create a nonprofit organization called, “Parents Against Mouth Breathing” with its core mission to educate parents on the dangers of prolonged thumb-sucking and mouth breathing, and the actions they can take to teach habits of nasal breathing, sleeping without snoring, and adequate exercise. :)
1:05:10 Re: Masks. - I'm a nose breather and have a lot of trouble wearing a mask. Anything longer than a few minutes and it becomes uncomfortable enough to need to take it off.
Today three major cities don't add fluoride to their water, but they already have naturally occurring levels at or above the 0.7 milligram-per-liter CDC recommendation to reduce decay. Those cities include Jacksonville, Florida; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and El Paso, Texas
I did a 51 day water fast. I brushed/flossed occasionally during that time, but I figured “If I’m not eating, I won’t get cavities”. I was wrong. I got 3 cavities. I find this to be interesting. Like a dog gnawing on a bone, the chewing that we do is actually really important for oral health.
When you fast for two long...you lose the diversity of the good bacteria in the mouth. The good bacteria needs to feed on what you eat :). They will struggle when you do not eat for too long. And depending on what you were brushing with...it may have hindered the flourishing of good bacteria in your mouth (as most mouth washes do).
Thanks this speaks to me, and my experience of life. My problems with phlegm have largely resolved itself with cutting most carbs, and processed foods out of my diet. I can now for the first time in my life breath through my nose except at night when my air passages seem to narrow enough to make this unnatural. Recently I started to take Benfotiamine, and fish oil, and my sleep recovery seems to be much better.

40:11 - mouth breathing increases risk for cavities and accumulation of health damaging anaerobic bacteria by lowering the pH of the mouth and drying out the protective effect of saliva. These bacteria can also affect gut health after being swallowed as some can survive the acidity of the stomach.

I would go from clear skin to looking like I had moderate acne in a day. I read that stopping using toothpaste with fluoride would help. Either that worked or I just aged out of it. I don’t have that issue anymore, curious is the removal of fluoride helped?
Children's diets of high carbs and processed foods also play a huge part of their behavior and sleep. I did notice how she recommended every single topic that you should see a doctor if you have a question on a certain topic. Umm NO. Mouth taping is something that sounds so weird to most people but I do it and have for about 3 months. I can say that it is very weird for the first few nights but it quickly became very comfortable for me. I wake up feeling rested and my mouth feels much cleaner. If someone tells me they're a doctor or a nurse, I assume they're a scumbag until proven otherwise. There are some good people in the medical industry, but they are very few and very far between.
@@whitemakesright2177 this is why I decided I wouldn’t go to medical school unless/until the world greatly changes. I’m not spending all that money to get a piece of paper that legally obligates me to lie to people and poison them just so I can say that I’m giving them “medical advice.”

Doctors aren’t free-thinkers, they’re generally ideologues. Advanced schooling breeds ideologues, imo.

Dr. Staci is amazing! I wish there were more health care providers like her
Fascinating discussion on relatively under reported yet extremely impactful health issues. I think most people, myself included, really had no idea how serious this could get. Excellent job, once again. Hopefully, this information will reach those who are affected by this.
More people need to talk about the dangers of fluoride.

We were given fluoride packs at my school several times a year in my 4th and 5th grade years. This was in the 90s. These were the same.2 years that I started having tics and was diagnosed mild-moderate severity Tourette Syndrome. I always wondered if the fluoride was a contributing factor in this.
Fluoride packs? To consume?

Same here, wish I could breathe through my nose on a regular basis especially when I sleep.. Hope you find a solution to the chronic problem.
@@kyliefan7 Why do you regret the surgery? I just got septoplasty to remove my polyps and now I can breathe so much better through my nose. My allergies have caused those tissues to inflame again, but now I tape my mouth shut and that helps with that.
@@whatup6557 I never had polyps thank God but was chronically congested so they removed that tissue! I think they are called turbinates so my nose literally CAN NOT CLOG!
Lol
I'm surprised the instructor did not talk about crunchy foods for periodontal ligament health.
_"...I like everyone to know that I was a dentist who promoted fluoride; I
was taught and trained very conventionally and it was up for vote in Portland
... and I was on the pro-fluoride campaign and
I was picketing and wore the buttons and all the swag and everything. Now, why was that? Well, it's really because I hadn't done the work and I was just taking information that had been fed to
me in dental school without ever questioning it, without ever looking at the other side or what the controversy
was; and I would become very impassioned about this, that fluoride is
saving lives, you know. But then I went to a debate and I remember hearing the
opponents and things ...that I had never heard before in dental school, never had I
heard about neurotoxicity and how this was having an impact on our children and so it really made me take a
step back and look at a bigger picture and then I personally started digging into the research...." ._
This describes so well why the vast majority of medical professionals unquestioningly accepted the official soztoo narrative and are only now gradually waking up to the mounting evidence and open admissions by the double-yoo aitch oh et al. about so many aspects that were for one reason or another got wrong: safety and effectiveness of things applied, origins or things, advisability of smothering mouths and cowering indoors, vulnerability of young and healthy people and so on and so on.

And how are you now?

Did you find a pediatric dentist for your children that you like?
Dr Whitman or any professional- Since one problem is that we don’t chew as much compared to our ancestors who chewed 4 hours per day, would u recommend chewing gum 4 hours a day as a way to improve jaw and breathing health? Maybe to improve facial aesthetics too?
You would need to be concious about chewing an even amount of time on each side I reckon.
Night urination is a sign of B1 deficiency. I put red meat back into my keto diet, and 2 weeks later I no longer urinate at night.
@GymBum Probably because everyone says it causes cancer!! 😂
Because I didn’t know better, my parents didn’t know how to feed me better, my school told me to eat “balanced,” “sugar is necessary for brain health” etc

Interesting how we are more pron to cavities as mouth breather
This was a fantastic conversation! 👏🏻
Regarding mouthwash, what about hydrogen peroxide? Is it beneficial to use this? if so, what strength etc?
@@AM.000 thanks for the info!
EXACTLY
Yup exactly!!

Terrific new information!
The swollen adenoids are what’s causing the difficulty breathing nasally during sleep. Dairy and wheat are the root causes….but any food that the child has an allergy to can cause the inflammation. Unbelievable that people don’t know this considering I discovered this in research 30 years ago. Guessing the info has be censored.
40:11 - mouth breathing increases risk for cavities and accumulation of health damaging anaerobic bacteria by lowering the pH of the mouth and drying out the protective effect of saliva.
These bacteria can also affect gut health after being swallowed as some can survive the acidity of the stomach.
