  • Whether you like it or not, it seems like motors are taking over mountain biking. So should I test more of them or stick to my gurning guns and concentrate on conventional bikes? Genuinely interested what you guys think so please let me know in the comments.

From where I sit, EMTB's are more relevant to "MOUNTAIN BIKING" than slightly modified 'offroad' road bike/gravel bike reviews.
E-MTB's allow a lot of us to still ride with our much lighter and fitter friends, or make up for excessive years and or past injuries. Regardless of what some think, they are the future of MTB!

You should definitely do more e-bike reviews Guy!
I get the whole e-biles are great for those getting on, injured, new to biking etc etc, but I’m 46, been riding since i was 2. I’m fit, not injured, and went to e-bikes about 4 years ago after your Whyte e160 review. And I’ve never looked back. I kept both my Yeti SB160 and Giant Glory for about 12 months after getting an e-bike but ultimately sold both, as neither got a single ride after getting the e-bike.
They just let you do more biking, where’s the harm in that, I’ve never got it, never will???
And your style of review is what makes it, makes you unique in the UA-cam world. As mentioned, there are other reviewers out there, but a lot of their work is just like a paid advertisement.

It makes sense that you should be doing more reviews relevant to emtb’s as more and more people are choosing to ride them for whatever reason. For you to remain relevant you must bring your incisive and highly relevant comments to people who prefer to ride e bikes.

Yes is the short answer, it would be nice to hear unbiased opinions and reviews on e-bikes. When I was looking for an e-bike there were very few honest reviews out there. Lets face it, it's a minefield. lightweight, full fat, short travel, long travel, big batteries, small batteries, range extenders, I could go on. Due to work and family commitment's, ( and if I'm being honest, a lack of motivation ), I don't have the luxury of building my fitness up by riding three or four times a week. I switched from a Calibre Bossnut ( a bike I bought after watching one of your reviews) to a full fat Cube Stereo hpc 160 with a 750wh battery, and yes I'm overbiked but it allows me to ride with fitter, better riders than me. I ride regularly and predominately with "analogue" riders, and while I'm the subject of lots of banter it's an inclusive group. I've had the e-bike for 18 months and in that time I've become fitter, ( I ride in mostly eco and with the motor off now, yes you can do that 😮 as opposed to emtb and turbo when I started ), I've made lots of new riding friends and my bike skills are better, although mainly because the bike flatters me 🤣. I think a proper Kes review, ( one that cuts through the bullshite ), of various e-bikes would be invaluable to people looking to buy an e-bike.

Absolutely! I love your reviews and features on all things mtb and occasionally gravel - 2 of the things I spend my time doing on bikes. I succumbed a year ago and bought a trek rail 5 base model e-mtb and use it for holidays in Wales ( off there for 3 days riding with that and the gravel rig next week ) the Lakes and more hilly places than what we have here in flat Sufflok. I spend most of my time riding the gravel and occasionally my full sus or hardtail around here and use the e-bike as a bit of a holidays and hi days type treat bike. My wife and lad are trying to persuade me to by another e bike so one of them can go riding with me. So yes absolutely you should cover them as much as all the analouge bikes that we still all love and desire. As this video proves, they arent just a fad and open up a whole new experience. Techy climbs now become as fun as the descents - who would of thought that! Keep up the great videos Guy!

E-bikes are a big part of the cycle world these days. I tagged along with group of rides few months ago. I was the only one out of 8 riders on a human powered gravel/ road bike . I've marshalled Ard Rock for the past three years I was blown away by the number of motors I saw this year but I do think it is a good thing. Having owned a Focus Jam2 previously it helped me fall in love with mountain biking again at a time when I simply didn't have the time and fitness to ride the terrain and distances I love. I'm now in the same position again but without the Jam2 but I'm not up to date enough regarding the E-MTB market to know where to look. I would second another comment that states that Rob rides is more an advertisment for brands rather than providing honest reviews, I think the industry needs that to keep them honest and I don't think there is a better individual out there to deliver that other than yourself to be honest Guy.

Focus on manual bikes and watch your channel get smaller and smaller Guy. The future is eMTBs, on a recent trip to the Alps two large bicycle retailers stated that 90% of their sales are electric assisted, 5% manual and 5% children’s. Further, faster, explore more, still a great workout and ride with ALL your friends almost regardless of fitness, age or weight and that’s priceless.

I purchased an ebike in 2018, canyon spectral on. It was great fun at first , but I struggled with the extra weight, maybe because I'm a light rider , 10 stone. Also quickly realised how much more expensive they were, with the speed you are replacing components. Wasn't until I did the BHF peaks challenge on my mtb with a load of mates that I remember just how much I enjoyed the buzz from smashing a tricky climb. I quite like ebikes given I've got one, there's certainly a time and place for them. Problem is a huuuuge part of any review with them simply has to be about longevity of each of the motors to be really worthwhile. Suppose that could come from different long termers rather than a review of a specific bike over a couple of weeks.

I have a passing interest in ebikes but they're not there yet and very few people actually need them. I did the Ard Rock epic on a normal bike and weigh 125kg. Having tested a couple at the Santa Cruz demo day at Stainburn the only place they were more fun was on the climbs but they did mean I could do more, at least until the battery died.
From a review point of view it's useful to hear how they ride but your experience with battery life will be very different to mine due to the weight difference. No reviewers seem to talk about how much power they actually put out and how long it can be sustained for. The nominal 250W limit isn't even close to being true if I can nearly empty a 720wh battery in 1:30 with an EP801.

Not a word about problem number one of offroad e-bikes. Motor reliability. Second one : repairable e-bike motors. Third one: compatibility : new motors and batteries not compatible with older frames. So if your 3 year old motor or batterie dies ferquently you end up with a frame for the waste bin. Four : specific internal batteries that can not be charged or taken off the bike. Five :lack of short cranks produced by shimano, sram etc : pedal strikes kill motors. The (e)bike press lacks criticicism. They never ride bikes for a long time and they don't have to pay for it. But I think if you will mention this too much you will not be test riding a lot of bikes.

I think it would difficult for you to give 100% to an ebike review. You’d always be comparing them to the equivalent normal version of said bike and how they’re all a bit heavier than your favourite bike. Rob is pretty unbiased these days, when he started out he compared every ebike to the Levo, as that was the best at the time, but these days he tests varied selections and gets varied outcomes. Steve (Embn) also does great reviews, but is hampered by sponsors and having to pretty much advertise the product at the same time. Sam’s Bikes also does great reviews of only ebikes, he has a vast and varied library of reviews. In the end, you probably don’t need to review too many ebikes, you’re more a fan of enduro, xc, gravel and road anyway, which is a great help to the cycling community!

I'm seriously considering an e bike cos everything bloody aches these days. Your opinion as an acoustic rider would resonate to many people like me who love to pedal XC bikes, love a hoon on a gravity rig but just feel the suffering of a worn out human chasis is possibly taking away just a bit of my enthusiasm for getting out on big days.

I built my own mtb ebike with one of the mid-drive kits that are available (primarily for cost, or rolling cost because I had enough bits to build a serviceable mtb at the time) and it's been brilliant. I've done the trails around Avemore / The Cairngorms many times and had no issues. (a couple of minor injuries 🙂)
I get the reliability thing, the rear cassette does wear faster (I haven't had any other issues), but I have accepted my fate.

I’m 57 and last year battled knee cap pain (patella femoral) and have kept my normal pedal bike, a giant trance, but bought an egravel and an emtb. Now, fitness hasn’t been impacted even though I’m 80% on the eebs, reason being, I’ve doubled the time in saddle plus I keep my heart rate (using wahoo elemnt roam as a visual training tool) to zone 2 which means I’m not finishing a ride completely knackered out. Stats: Cwmcarn Cafall and Twrch trail on emtb 2 hours average HR 125, max 146 compared to same loop on giant trance pedal bike 133 average, 167 max (moving time was 3:59. 1661 calories versus 1450 cals on the emtb and only 2 hours ridden in normal assist not turbo mode). The 26.5 kg weight of the emtb is an added work out with a lot of body English needed to move and jump it around compared to 14kg Trance. My knee pain has gone and I can do my day job which pulls 13k steps on average so I’m not a desk-dweller. Must mention reliability, on second motor on the emtb after 3 months from new due to water ingress plus eats cassettes and chains so it’s not cheap. Full warts defends future thwarts.

One of the things many of us like about your reviews is... YOU, so the subject is sometimes secondary. So if e-bike reviews means more you, then yes, if it compromises things and makes it different then maybe not. I like the experiments you make with the downcountry builds etc, I like the format and the cumulative knowledge you can put into ride reviews, does doing e-bikes open up more opportunities to do stuff like this? I agree with the lady on the specialized, longer travel doesn't normally appeal to me, but it does with a motor. I'm e-bike curious, but all the reviews feel like adverts at the moment, so I'd like your take on them. For instance - is an e-bike hardtail worth it? Why isn’t the fact that many people find eeb improves access a good reason to pay attention to them? There’s some really bizarre arguments made. There are downsides to everything. Would you stop reviewing non-electric bikes if I thought up a downside or two to non-eebs? Of course not, it’s an absurd concept. Frankly, review the bike’s you want to and need to. Most e-bikers are mountain bikers grown older, certainly in my circle they are. Personally I think you should stick to analogue bike reviews as you spent the whole video slagging e-bikes off - you obviously have an issue with them. Come back and done-bike reviews when you’ve mentally taken the plunge and ride them.

"tread it any worse than a naan bread" 😂 my issue is, pretty much any ebike you buy will be landfill in less than 8 years due to repair/battery replacement costs and tech obsolescence, the damage to the environment is huge, plus you are using electricity to power the most efficient means of transport man ever created, I've heard of conspicuous consumption, but that's beyond the pale

Personally I'd prefer you didn't. Your's is one of the few review channels that still focuses on mostly "proper" bikes. For me the ebike makes sense for blokes like the older guy with the heart attacks, totally makes sense. For people who are fit enough, they are simply excuse makers, and I've also noticed in the biking club format our midweek rides dwindled in numbers as there is no incentive to keep match fit for those on ebikes, a few weeks off the bike, just turn up the power. Whereas naturally aspirated riders are out week in week out in all weather to maintain and stay fit. Not for me.

  • @Cyclist-o6e
    @Cyclist-o6e Місяць тому

No. I’m not interested in e-bikes. I’d be unlikely to watch e-bike content. In terms of events like Ard Rock, I don’t see why e-bike people need to be on the course at the same time as mountain bikers.
I like content about British brands like Cotic and Hope, steel hardtails and full suspension bikes, bikes that are a good value for the money like Calibre, alloy bikes, titanium bikes.
