    I really want to read the books but I don't want to get into something that might never get finished.

      It will. This spiel is the typical rhetoric of impatient ASOIAF fans. Read the books, it is of MUCH higher quality than the show AND includes MANY interesting characters, some of whom are VERY important that don't even exist on the show. The books are breathtakingly good, please try them out, one day.

      I doubt they'll ever finish. It'll take another 6 years at absolute minimum, most likely a lot more. And it's difficult to say GRRM will even last that long.

      He gave us 5 fantastic books... and yes it would be nice if he produced the last 2 chapters... However he owes us nothing per say! I hope rather than expect that he will. He has given a lot and is getting on... He might want to enjoy his life rather than just slave over writing an ending for us fans... maybe he might have writer block when it comes to this given story. All I can say I am grateful for the first 5... if ever more comes I will be delighted but I will not give out to him if he were not to finish the last 2 books...

      @@deenick8794 fair point but I'm just upset that we're seemingly aren't gonna get a proper conclusion to series, granted I understand George probably see the TV adaptation passing his books but at the same time I can't but have sneaky suspicion that he wrote himself into a corning and that's probably while Winds of Winter keep on getting delayed though I'm glad for as shitty as the show's ending was at least it was some form of resolution to the story, now do I hold this over his head? no, I just think he should've planned things ahead better early on so that way things wouldn't end up the way they are now but that's just my take.

      Meh, I'd do tons of hookers, but not young ones. Girls don't really know how to fuck until they're at least over 30. Sure, there's the instinctual attraction to a younger body, but a bit of exercise and plenty of practice make for a far better experience. Mid 30's Asian chicks = heaven.

      Yeah,fine - but why would he want to die with his series unfinished? He needs to step outside his ego and allow someone to help him. Otherwise, Winds will probably come out - but the next books(it won't likely be finished in 7 won't. If he allowed help, he could do it. I think he does owe his fans his best effort - and if that means sacrificing his personal ownership of the novels - by allowing others to get involved - then he should do it.
      The show does not count, the story is too different - I don't count that as giving us an ending.

      farsenor operant, kind of a cuckold answer. Good for him? He started a book series he cannot or won't finish. The fact that he doesn't sit around and write those 6 pages a day anymore means that he'll never write the books again. Or else we'd have the book already. He's a failure of a writer who cannot finish what he set out to do.

    As an artist I have a lot of sympathy for George. The majority of a painting tends to happen really fast, but most of the work time is that last 15% of the painting that brings it to life. Artists often don't feel their work is ever complete or perfect and that can cause us to abandon it. Creating in the public eye has to make this process so much harder. I doubt however it ends will satisfy him or the readers, because it's too built up now.

      Ashley Scott Remember though, that in all great pieces of film and art, some questions remain unanswered at the end... that's the profound beauty of it. And if you look at George's other works, there are actually still questions that people ponder and interpret. So no doubt, we won't get all the answers by the end. But where's the fun in getting all the answers? The mystery is the art. The mystery keeps it alive.

      Writing isn't really the same. In art you start by doing the main outline then add the finer detail on top. writing is completely different as the first words of a book are the most important and after that every part of the book is as imporant as the next bit. In other words compared with art its a much more balanced progression, to write well the first part of the book and the middle part require just as much attention/time as the end part.

    GRRM is a prolific writer, who doesn't use an outline. He has said before that he loses interest in a story if he can predict the plot. While he has a good idea of the bittersweet ending, he also has said he looks forward to writing the remaining books to see where the story takes him.He has been known to write 100,000 words in a month when inspired, and keeps producing additional ASOIAF related stories every year.
    Personally I suspect, that having seen and worked on the HBO series will affect how GRRM approaches the books. While he is a highly professional writer who has said "the books are the books, and the series is the series", he must be influenced by the series which may tangle with his original vision for the characters and plot arc. Similar to Itamar's point about not wanting to end the books, GRRM may potentially feel it's better to leave his masterpiece unfinished to keep the story alive for the fans and avoid the inevitable backlash from critics.
    Let's all wish GRRM a long and healthy life, and look forward to reading Winds of Winter.

      This is an interesting thought. The thing is because it's an ongoing fictional world the story never really ends. Just the plotlines we are currently following. And those don't end unless the character dies they just reach some type of resolution. A resolution that could even be temporary. So he could leave some things loosely open-ended while still giving us a satisfying story. Than open the world up for other writers, other creators. Think of the star wars universe here or comics. We have the first three stars wars movies. But the story still continues because the world still exists. I don't know. I think he actually has an opportunity to approach the story and story world in a completely different way. To open it in a way a story has never been done before. To create something even more living and breathing than star wars. But he probably won't do that...

    Well, a big issue with A Song of Ice and Fire series is that Martin wrote the first 3 books at the tail-end of his prime. No matter what anyone wants to admit, writers (and everyone else) has a prime. Some people are so fantastic, that after their prime they are still quite good at what they do but that doesn't mean they haven't dropped in quality.
    Look at the dip in quality after book 3. Also, take into account how long it took taken him to write the first 3 books and then the next 2. It's obvious that what started out as a gritty, realistic dark fantasy has evolved into an epic Martin couldn't even have imagined himself. He's created a brilliant world but it's so complicated that it would tough for anyone to wrap their head around. Forgetting one little thing could destroy the entire story and create a massive plot-hole. It's much easier to write a book at the start then it is later on. Sadly, Martin isn't in his 40s or early 50s anymore.
    That being said, I'm exciting to read his earlier works. By many accounts, he's written some brilliant stuff. I appreciate the man as a writer. I'm not going to speculate on someone's life. I'm not blind though. He really did bite off more than he could chew with the story he's trying to tell now. Tolkien did the same thing with his Middle Earth world. There were many more plans for that but he at least got his main epic (The Lord of the Rings) out before he got bogged down with everything else he wanted write about his world.

  • @HebrewsElevenTwentyFive
    @HebrewsElevenTwentyFive 7 років тому +66

    I don't think people realise how many subplots there are. I won't even begin to explain how many. My prediction is WOW 2017, DOS 2023. Oh how stupid the impatient fans will feel when he completes the series in less than a decade. I will end with a quote from the man himself:
    "Ten years from now, no one is going to care how quickly the books came out. The only thing that will matter, the only thing anyone will remember, is how good they were. That's my main concern, and always will be." - George R.R. Martin

    • @mynameisbill022
      @mynameisbill022 7 років тому +17

      Yah YahYah Yah Yah you might want to push that prediction back a few years. You're basing a 2017 release on him estimating the book out this year. His estimates are crap. This is the same guy who released AFFC in 2005 and said ADWD would be released the following year. It wasn't released until 2011.

    • @HebrewsElevenTwentyFive
      @HebrewsElevenTwentyFive 7 років тому +2

      I'm basing a 2017 release on him saying he was close in January 2016. Yeah *16* . I am fully aware of his previous releases. I'm just saying you will be presently surprised and when these books are finished and the incredible ending blows you away, you won't give a shit how long it took because you have it.

    • @mynameisbill022
      @mynameisbill022 7 років тому +6

      Yah YahYah Yah Yah once again because of his writing process his own estimates are meaningless. He obviously was not as close in 2016, as you think he was because the lack of new information persists.
      And please have some realism in your predictions. TWOW is in all likelihood going to be the last book published in this series, if it ever releases. He is NOT going to finish and the only ending will be on HBO. I'm sorry if that's pessimistic but it's becoming increasingly likely

    • @HebrewsElevenTwentyFive
      @HebrewsElevenTwentyFive 7 років тому

      Are you always this dramatic, Jacob? Lets look at previous releases. Based on AFFC - ADWD it should take 5 - 7 years from ADWD (2011) until TWOW which means no longer than 2018 (I stick with my prediction of this year.) Then ADOS which, though I predict 2023, may take until 2025. Even allowing for 2 EXTRA years for 2027, that is still only a decade.
      Granted, we all want the ending but it's hardly difficult, waiting 10 years, more likely 8 for the books. This all stems from people not being able to have patience. There are literally thousands of VERY high quality Fantasy/Sci Fi novels and series out there. Maybe not as good but some come close. George himself has a LARGE catalogue for you to check out, some of those may give us tips on mysteries in ASOIAF such as Storms End and The Wall being beyond Westerosi architecture. 'Dying Of The Light' hints at worlds being destroyed by futuristic nuclear tech species and going back to a primitive level of technology whilst nuclear/air etc causes human mutations and magical beings to exist etc. Let me know if you want the actual quote, it's really cool when you think it may have happened in ASOIAF. Anyway...
      Time will fly faster than ever when you focus on other things in life. 10 years, more likely 7 or 8, is not a long time to wait for the last novel. Why would someone invest the second part of their life to a series and not finish "because he doesn't want to". If you said that to him in real life or on his blog he would vehemently disagree.

    • @mynameisbill022
      @mynameisbill022 7 років тому +7

      He has major characters separated by thousands of miles who have to be in two places at the same time, he has introduced completely unnecessary subplots and has a bad habit of world building which doesn't move the plot forward. There is way too much story to resolve and wrap up the series in 7 books. We have barely started the second book of his originally planned trilogy, let that sink in

    He with a capital H seems like the Stanley Kubrick kind of person. Somebody who HAS to create and in full detail which consumes a lot of energy and time. On the other side this feeling cannot be switched off and therefore he could feel haunted by it. Kubrick often worked for decades on one single movie and sometimes didn't even film it for the most trivial of reasons, but when he did it always paid out and there's a reason he is considered on of the most innovating directors of all time. Same goes for George in my oppinion.

  • @inthefade
    @inthefade 7 років тому +16

    The problem is that ASoIaF has way too many sub-plots to wrap up. It is a tangled mess, and he is trying to figure out how it all resolves and comes together without huge parts of the story being pointlessly forgotten. He should have begun simplifying the plot around the fourth book, but he didn't. He may make the mistake of not simplify in the next book, and so it will never end, or it will never be finished, or he will just wrap it up in an unsatisfying way to get it over with.
    But that is me being pessimistic! On good days I think we'll have the next book this year, and the following one in 3 to 5 years.

      Jake Lafrance My theory has been that he's been waiting for this next season to come out. He noticed how D&D tried to make their own "better" version of his works and now he's just delaying the next book so that they don't have material to work with. This in turn will force the books and show to go in separate directions for a good many plot lines and they'll always be seen as separate works. The books a more true in depth reading and the shows an inaccurate portrayal of the books, but still a good show. I guess we'll see though.

      I assure you that it will be the hardest book for him to write. The trend has been going that way for some time now and i don't see that changing. Unless he finally realizes he needs an 8th book to round out the series, its gonna be the hardest. There are just too many plot lines to sow up, too many character threads to end. He has only killed off 3 POV's out of i believe 20 so far and one is on his way back.

Remember when Ayra has 3 deaths and she chooses nobodies instead of Tywin or the Mountain. Remember when a shadow baby came out of Mel. Imagine if that was not in the books, how silly and an example of bad writing those moments would be recieved. The show quality hasnt changed much. GRRM was never the greatest writer alive as many of his fans believe.

  • @TheFuryHasCome
    @TheFuryHasCome 6 років тому +3

    It's not that the current first 3 books were supposed to be the complete story. It's that he originally had the idea of putting everything he's written up to this point and more into 3 massive books. With the first being called A Game of Thrones which would have most if not all the content of the first 3 Song of Ice and Fire novels, which are GoT, CoK, and SoS. The second would be A Dance with Dragons which would have what we now know as books 4 and 5 in this massive novel. And for the final 3rd one it'd be named A Time of Wolves which would've featured the events of books 6 and 7. Obviously, his editor and publisher said those are much too large so spread them out, and so he did. So that's the story of why he had an idea to make it a trilogy in his original outline for the series.

      It wouldn't surprise me. GRRM has said that a large part of his editing process is deletion. On a side note, I once read a story about how Proust (another author famous for a gargantuan, many-charactered work) replaced something like 100 pages with three sentences because he realized he'd made an error. I can see GRRM getting into similar problems.

    I wasn't a massive fan of him being so dismissive to his fans who bought those points up, it might not be nice for him to hear the truth but it doesn't change reality and people are concerned for his health as well as the series, people aren't just vultures they do care about him as well as his work.

      Most people don't really care for his health, they just want the books to be finished and released. Imagine an alternate reality, where he releases all the books and then passes away not too long after the last book is released. A lot of people will say "well at least he completed the series before he died". Something people forget is that famous people are always asked the same questions by different people. Hearing "hey, you're old, you're fat, you might die, when are the books going to be released?" by hundreds of different people will probably drive anyone nuts, no matter how honest about themselves they truly are.

      Just because something is true that doesn't mean it's polite. When I see a stranger who's old and fat I don't go up and tell them so - and that's what most fans are to GRRM: strangers. As much as he may appreciate his fans, they're not on the level of close friends and family.
      If his wife tells him he needs to order the carrots instead of the fries, that's a different story.
      I mean I don't know. Maybe it's a cultural thing, but I'd find it uncomfortable to have that conversation with my own family... it just seems really weird to me to say that kind of thing (publically) about someone you don't even know.
      Obviously I can talk about stuff like that with friends, but in public forums? Ehh... feels like bad manners for no good reason to me. It's not like you or me saying he's fat and old in an internet comment section is gonna make him eat healthy and exercise.

    My biggest fear for these last two (or possibly three) books is that George R. R. Martin will begin to remind us of George Lucas. I say this with two things in mind: 1.) The "make-it-up-as-you-go" style (particularly with Return of the Jedi); and, 2.) The prequels.
    Anyone who has read the original scripts of "The Star Wars" knows that George Lucas took a very complex sci-fi/fantasy story and turned it into a space opera that hearkened back to the old B movie sci-fi serials (like Flash Gordon). Still, I can give him the benefit of the doubt with the first two films. I cannot reason that Lucas EVER intended for Luke and Leia to be siblings or that Ewoks would defeat Imperial forces on Endor.
    Moreover, the stinging criticism from fans for the prequel trilogy -- the same fans who once sang his praises -- obviously affected Lucas tremendously. The fact that Lucas responded by changing certain aspects of the prequel sequels (e.g., removal of Jar Jar as a central character, etc.) shows us that Lucas was making up important aspects of the film as he was going instead of following his "outline" as he often claimed.
    George R. R. Martin has stated emphatically that he as a fairly straightforward outline that he doesn't deviate from. I just wonder whether or not he truly follows that outline. This is particularly due to the fact that the original outlined story included a conclusion -- one that was not reached by the end of the third book.

    1:20 Pretty much what I have thought - the story has gotten too big for him. I think he started with a simpler story with the fantasy trope of an ancient evil returning to the land which he wanted to make different from other fantasy novels of this sort but he got carried away with the present day intrigues and the histories of his other characters and their lands and houses many of which with the exception of the Starks had little or nothing to do with the ancient evil.
    It almost seems he wants to get away from his original story in that regard and focus more on the human drama that has unfolded. The Others/White Walkers along with the Wall and the Night Watch almost seem like intrusions from another story especially the White Walkers as they only appeared once and long before the Andals, the dragons, the Iron Throne. Dragons on the other hand have had a much bigger impact on this world first in Essos in helping create a mighty empire then in Westeros in creating the Iron Throne kingdom. Their return in the world naturally has a bigger impact given their long influence on the history of this world.
    I wonder if Martin could time travel, if he would go back to his younger self and tell himself to scrap the Others/White Walkers and tell himself to focus on the dragons and the resolving of the Game of Thrones while making the Doom of Vallyria be the ancient evil threat in the background.

      I don't think anyone would be against it getting finished by another writer, but he's emphatically against that, even if he dies. So of course people are pushing him to get it done before that happens. If everyone knew that it would get finished one way or the other, there would be less pressure on him, he's brought it on himself with that stance.

      I'd like to see him finish to the absolute point he creatively can't go any further, but not necessarily finishing the story, as another commenter said, the world of ASOIAF could be never ending essential, not dissimilar to star wars. Grrm has his own plot points ect and the story surrounding westeros and essos, but there are may other continents that could be picked up by other writers, either entwining with the current storyline or evolving into their own, i joked once about tamriel (skyrim), middle earth and ASOIAF possibly being within the same realm of existence, without knowing the other is truly there. lol

    As far as Lost is concerned, everything happened. They really crashed on the island, some of them really escaped only to go back three years later, some of them really traveled through time, some of them really died on the Island, one of them really died in a hotel room, a few of them really escaped in the end and lived out their lives and eventually died as all people do. The only thing that wasn't "real" or that only happened in a metaphysical sense was the "side flash" reality in the final season, which was a place for them to reunite after their lives were over so they could all move "on" together.
    This was explicitly stated by Christian in the show's final moments. I don't understand the confusion.

There’s enough pressure he feels due to his fame and the popularity of the show, he doesn’t need people telling him to hurry up and write the books before he dies because they want to know the ending. Thoroughly unenviable situation he’s in. He’s neither too old nor unhealthy. Fans of the Hobbit waited 12 years for its sequel and it was well worth it. Show some gratitude 🙏🏻

    I think Itamar is on to something when he say's that GRRM might not want to finish the books because he does not want to leave this story that he has created. He has the potential as an author to stay in the world of ASOIAF with his Dunk and Egg stories, or his idea for the Dance of the Dragons, but he doesn't want to say goodbye to characters like Daenerys or Jon or Arya or Tyrion or Bran! I can't blame him; as much as I want some conclusion, I don't really want to say goodbye either.
    That being said, I had read recently that Winds is actually in a proofreading state, and soon ready for publishing. I think it will come out probably late fall or early winter! Dream may always remain a dream!

    I think that the biggest problems are with the fans and how GRRM writes. He is writing about Westeros currently, probably prolifically. You mentioned The World of Ice and Fire. He is also working on future Dunk and Egg novels as well as the history of the Targaryens. Here is where I think most fans go awry. They expect him to finish the main series, then go into the deeper history. The problem there is that GRRM likes to have events in the current book reflect or mirror those of the past. So in order to know how things will go for the current events, he has to write out how things happened in the past, and as he develops more about the past it can potentially affect how his current story will develop. I believe that he has the ending, and most of the events along the way already sketched out, but he will continue to tweak things in the current books as he comes up with new ideas while writing other Planetos stories. He is writing on several different fronts, each dependent on the other. He can't write the specifics of how the current conflict with the Others will end until he has written out how the previous long night ended. He can't tell us more about what will happen to Brienne of Tarth until he has written more about her (assumed) ancestor Duncan the Tall. He has to know more where the story started before he can write how it ends. I believe that if he is able to finish the main series it will be one of the last things he publishes, and that until that point he will continue to give us more and more of the backstory and history of this immense world he has created. Each new work will add to the overall scope and grandeur of the tales, giving theory crafters, pod casters and UA-camrs plenty of fodder for comment and speculation until the very end, which will be the end, because he will not be around anymore to write. This will also be his way of controlling his work, by not finishing until his death (or retirement), he keeps the doors closed to outside parties.

    On June 23, 2020, Martin said, "It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go." It's 2021 and no publication date in sight.

    I can get the idea of loving his creation so much he doesn't want it to end. But truthfully, it wouldn't have to end once ADOS is finished. He has mentioned more Dunk and Egg stories and a Targaryan history. He could explain the mystery of Ashai, or the 5 Forts. Or give us a story set in Valayria. The history he has hinted at is huge so he wouldn't need to leave it.
    I do think that it may be a case of not feeling it is finished. When I paint, I will keep working and working on it, thinking it just needs this or this to be finished. If I'm not careful and willing to walk away, I can mess it up so badly that it could be easier to just start over.

    I really hope he finishes it of course, but I've also heard that he gave the ending plot points to a few very close and trusted friends/authors who can finish the book if he does end up dying before he finishes it, so I think we will get the ending no matter what, but I really want it to come all from him as others will never be able to write in the same in depth style w/such careful planning of what words to use where, etc.

    Once he realized he wouldn't beat HBO to the ending, perhaps he decided to hold back, let HBO finish their version, then release his final vision of the book version. Hell he might have most of both books done by now and is just holding back to keep the realtime comparisons to the show from happening.

    Martin himself said in an interview, that it took him 4 years to write "a game of thrones". So he was always a slow writer. In addition, he has many projects going on now, he wrote dunc and egg, WOIAF, fire and blood which is almost finished as well. So he definitely isn't slowing down, he has maintained his pace.

    And there is also something else I think you forgot to comment: he has been building the story. Story-building is definitely easier than solving the problems (plots) you built. So it's a harder book...

    George actually said that if he unfortunately dies before the books are finished he'll have a backup of writers that he knows that he told the story to. Those writers also worked on the World of Ice and Fire book with George.

    Completely agree with the guy on the right. G.R.R. Will never finish Dreams of Spring. And Dreams of Spring for sure will not end the story. He got lost in his world. He loves it too much to ever want to leave it. 100% truth.

    He keeps adding things and characters and storylines with each new book. So as one story ends two more threads begin.

    As we’ve seen with the show, the ending is just as important as the beginning. Not only is George pressured to finish, but he’s pressured to finish WELL. Also keep in mind that the show has spoiled most of the big reveals, so that’s a factor too.

    Maybe GRRM is having a hard time finishing because he knows the ending. He's said several times that once he knows where the story goes, he loses interest

      So for the first couple of books, he quickly wrote and published them - as he built the story bigger and bigger. With the latter half of the series, he has to come to a conclusion and that's when it gets boring

      Would be his own fault; I mean he seriously backed himself into a corner with the whole White Walker thing. How could the story ever have moved off the final confrontation with them? If there were no Walkers and the story was solely about the fight for the Iron Throne, it could've gone in any number of directions. Frankly, it was a horrible story idea if he really did just want to wing it through the whole series.

    I'd have Elio and Linda, paired up with Preston Jacobs to finish the story.
    They all know the canon incredibly well, and they'd come up with a fantastic ending I reckon.
    Someone crowdfund this!

    I personally wouldn't mind if the books aren't finished so long as...
    1: We get Winds of Winter (he kept us waiting for too long).
    2: We get the ending (we'll at least get that with the show).
    3: He tells us the secrets of the story (how can we sleep at night without knowing what the walkers want? Or Littlefinger's grand plan? Or who is the prince that was promised? Or Varys' endgame?).
