Ultra high density grazing pioneer Johann Zietsman of South Africa, joins us for a three day workshop on sustainable ranching. We are also taught by regenerative grazing expert Jim Elizondo and cattle mineral expert Mark Bader. Learn key ways to maximize profitability and sustainability while building soil fertility and raising animals that are healthier, more adaptable and fulfill their role in healthy range management.

Very interesting, even though it's contrary to what Elizondo and Zietsmann are teaching in the previous videos.

@@jamesanderson677 I didn't hear them say that, did you? Where?
But actually my comment was on grazing height. This guy recommends (and has very good points) grazing only the top of the grass, and Zietsmann and Elizondo recommend grazing all the way down.

@@jotapits Elizondo says grazing the top 1/3 isn't practical. The cattle graze the best plants all the way down and leave the less desirable ones alone.

Just a thought… maybe by stock density ratio (finding the sweet spot) the cattle’s behavior changes and the more desirable grasses wouldn’t get grazed all the way down because they want to move onto to the next thing with a competition mindset… in theory this would leave a half or more of the plant to recover. I think it makes a lot of sense versus grazing the plant all the way to the ground. My cows prefer certain plants absolutely but they will go into a feeding frenzy when they think another may get something better and their selection of plants becomes less picky and they move around a lot more.

Surely he meant calories per KILOgram

downbntout I heard him give this presentation at Greg Judy’s and he also said per gram. I definitely don’t understand all the chemistry, but a gram of carbon (9000 calories) does not mean that the animal will have a net gain of 9000 calories per gram. Some of them are burned by oxygen, some are utilized for maintenance of the animal. The excess are utilized for fat, milk and growing babies.
Mark passed away in August. We lost a great mind in our field. And he was a super nice guy, willing to share knowledge freely.

One gram of carbohydrate is four calories, very often-repeated medical fact. Protein, 4/gm, fat, 9/gm

downbntout I tried to do some research into what you’re talking about, probably several months ago. I think there is some discrepancy between what Mark is saying and the common science, but I think it’s more semantics than anything.
