- If you own a plasma cutter or are thinking of purchasing one, this video is for you! Using wood templates with your plasma cutter is a cost effective and simple was to make accurate and repeatable cuts without an expensive CNC machine.
I've made many template from 18 gauge steel and have added magnets with two part epoxy. This eliminates claps and raises the steel enough that the tip follows well.
Hey Bud, I tried your idea and it works fantastic. I have a wood cutting bandsaw and bought some 1/4 hard board and make an allowance of about 1/16" and it cuts beautifully WITHOUT damaging the template. Thanks a million for your video, it has made my plasma a precision tool. I did a series of hole sizes on a hardboard strip and can cut a perfect bolt holes in all the popular larger sizes. I also made some curved parallel slots to use for adjusting/locks.
Great explanation and demonstration.
I use sodium silicate (water glass) to brush on the edges of my fiberboard templates. It makes the edges pretty fire proof. They last longer that way
the part about the inside and outside templates was very helpful :)
Ha Ha. You had me at "if you're like me, you should probably have yourself checked out". Great vid. Thanks!
Ha, all the comments are ‘just bought a plasma cutter’ - we’ll have done too, and found your video really informative! Thanks for posting.
Mate I was thinking of getting a plasma cutter and I thought I would Google wooden templates because it seemed like a good idea to me fully expecting a big no-no on UA-cam videos. It was awesome to find your posts and very informative thank you very much!
Nice video. Just got a plasma cutter and this looks pretty useful. Good job on the video.
What kind of plasma cutter did you get? A cheap Amazon one or expensive one?
Ingenious! B.T.W. I called the number on your shirt and some girl named Jenny answered.
I saw Tommy Two Tone for 2.92 cents at Paramount theater in Portland Oregon in 1980 it was a fun show.
great tips there ! Love the inside / outside templates ..it's going to help a lot and thank you for sharing.
Nice job. I test my templates by making a disc from thick card stock with a hole in the middle for a mechanical pencil. Saves material.
Thicker metals can char, even with my fat nozzle 7/16" radius so I make aluminum templates. Cut with a sabre saw, then fine tune with die grinder and carbide burrs. Flap drum for final finish.
Fine video! Great idea, very helpful to someone new to plasma cutting like me.
I know its 2022 but this video was very helpful, Thanks for making it!
Recently picked up a plasma cutter and had thought about wooden templates but thought they may burn up. I presume the hardboard is durable enough. Great tips.
Helpful. And good ideas and explanation.
This was fantastic information. Thank you - I'm hoping to eventually get into using tools like this for my hobbies, so this info was invaluable!
Good video on templates. I see this as the step between free hand and CNC.
I have to try using wood templates with my everlast plasma cutter. Thanks for the great idea.
.Very practical and useful info. Good to see your channel from Manitoba.
This was an absolutely wonderful video, thank you very much for posting.
I have been using aluminum dryer vent pipe. I place magnets opposite each other in different places to lift the template off the steel and stick it to the metal. This will even work on curved material. You can cut the vent pipe with regular scissors.
Good stuff!
Thanks!
great video...cheers from NW Ontario
Very useful information, thank you!
Very cool man. This will come in very handy with my everlast plasma cutter.
If you paint all around the edges of the wood templates with sodium silicate they are more resistant to burning and last longer.
Your shirt made me LOL at myself. I thought, that number sounds familiar. You look too young to even know. Not trying to be disrespectful. Just thinking out loud. Thanks for the great video!
Great Video.... the current price of MDF or OSB is insane.... buy a CNC cutter cheaper now!
Fantastic tips, very helpful.
Very useful and helpful information, thanks.
About 3 minutes into the video, I realized what the phone number on your shirt is.😂 thanks for the video btw.
Thanks fellow Canadian!!
“I’ve you’re like me- well, you should probably get yourself checked out”
Lol
I started building a mpcnc to cut out wood templates. Then decided to see if it would just plasma my parts out for me without the template.
Awesome video thanks man. I'm starting welding school soon with intention to do crafts and stuff. Learning as much as possible. good luck with future videos.
thanks!
These are great tips. Thank you.
Great information. I'm purchasing a plasma cutter soon and this will come in handy.
wonder how many people tried dialing 867-5309 and asking for Jenny..... Love the use of templates I make mine from 1/8th hardboard tempered panel.
+johnsont963 hehe, yeah i actually use hardboard too.....not sure why i said mdf... ahh well, cant win em all
REDNIC79 do you design any of them on the computer if so what do you use? I liked the technique on the numbers, great stuff
good ideas... I thought of the round edges on the sharp edged original sample... makes me think of making some kind of a profile follower with thin strong pins ...the wood pieces seems to burn though..... Something like a plasma pantograph
Awesome job bud
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Good tips...I use 1/4 hardboard or whatever is cheap at the store....I like to glue the wood to the metal..what do you use to hold the small guys?
Cool, thanks for the video!
Great video, well explained, Thank you
Badass shirt!
Awesome thankyou verymuch
Thanks for the video man never thought of this
will smith right on
Don't forget about HDF, for long term use templates (say a set of circles in consecutive increasing sizes, a great addition for any plasma cutter tool box) it's better. There's also HDF that's treated against fire, so the plasma cutter won't even touch it, also, since it's HDF (high density vs medium density) the ride is smoother, as i've noticed.
sweet!
Great tips. I've never thought about using wood for templates with my powerplasma cutter. Its a great idea.
Very helpful.....couple customers in winnipeg want some house #'s never even gave it much thought on the inside outside shit.....tx bro
manitoba proud
Thanks!!
awesome video mate
hey rednic keep up the good videos -
Have you tried 3/4 or does that put the tip to far from the work piece
Awesome video. I enjoy your teaching style. Was curious if you ever have problems with the MDF catching fire and if so, what circumstances seem to make that more likely?
no actually, it has not caught on fire, i think there is too much glue in it. worst thing it has done is smoke a bit.
good video
Love the shirt, I got it, i got it
Just asking !!! Is it possible to attach your cutter on to a hand made pantograph in place of a template /C.N.C. machine . Thanks for the tip .. Cheers from down Under in Australia
Question: Can a person cut multiple sheets at the same time (to make more than 1 copy of an item) or will the resulting pieces simply be welded together during the process?
Solid info. You’re probably decent at chess.
Great video. Is it possible to make a video of you making some templates?
I wonder about screw holes
Good Vid! Bought a ProPoint 30 a few weeks ago. Not sure how I went this long without one. You don’t use a stand off when cutting?
I know this is an older video, but hopefully you will read this. I need you opinion... I am shopping for my first plasma cutter and I was going back and forth on whether to get a pilot arc no-touch, or a HF start and drag it. After considering what I will use it most for (metal art, sheet metal), I am convinced that I want the PT-31 style torch with the HF contact tip. I am thinking this mainly because of the style of the tip will be better for using stencils/templates. I just think that the straight style of the tip would be easier than the cone shaped tip usually seen with a pilot arc system when using wood templates. Do you agree? Please help, I am at my wits end!!
Mine is a pilot arc, but has a fairly pointy tip. I'd agree with you that a thinner tip is better for templates. I think the HF tip would work great for you. So, yes, I'd say your correct
Jenny called, She wants her shirt back
Does the tip of the torch touch the metal or do you keep it a bit off?
Why would it not be 3/8 bigger since it is 3/16 all the way around and the piece be 3/8 bigger? I am bad at math.
I was thinking about a HF Titanium 45 but the drag shield looks hard to use. Any thoughts?
Thanks Man
Jenny Jenny !
I want to 3D print some templates too, but im afraid it melts :_
On some of those complex designs how do you reduce/add the material for your torch? I'd think that would be complicated on something with a lot of radi.
it can be, but once you get the hang of it you can find it limitations. some things very intricate and small may not work for this style of templates.
Neat templates, can you buy pre-made quality templates for plasma cutting?
+Kamil Malewski not that i know of......
I know there are MDF guitar body templates for sale.
Should we call the number on your shirt?
Tommy Two Tone
great idea but my tip sticks
What are you using to cut out the details in your templates? A jigsaw?
+KING TROLL yes mainly jig saw
1. Beautiful kayak on the ceiling. 2. My templates catch on fire when cutting thick metal (3/8"). Any ideas?
+Alan Yelvington 1. Thanks 2. Are you using hardboard?
3/8" pluwood for a 1/16" standoff. Running 50 amps.
use a more glue based wood like hardboard
where do you get your drawings to make your wooden templates
I either draw them, or print them and cut them out
what web site do you get your prints from . thanks
If you learn to draw you can have any thing you want. CAD is nice by takes some time to learn. There are free ones on line. A cheap simple solution is to use a T square, drafting triangles and a compass.
great video man! Excellent info on templates.
Kinda like Jesus being a template of how we should live and act because one day our lives will be laid out before him and it'll be all up to him to find us worthy.
Take care man! and I hope to see you in Heaven!😉
what's the best way to cut the wood also can you make bolt holes with a wooden template?
I usually use a jig saw with a fine blade. bolt holes can be done, but may need some cleaning up afterwords. i prefer to drill holes instead. but for larger holes (1" and larger) i would plasma them. thanks for the comment!
Jenny
sic shirt
How many people got the Jenny number?
I'll give you my last slice of pizza for your shirt
+Shin Gle what kind of pizza
at the time my wife gave me some kinda meat and mushroom, but I'd give up a Pizza hut's meat loves slice for it
woodprix plans has very good designs and plans.
Excellent video, great job. Thank you
Thanks Man
Nice youtube name...
