I recently had the chance to drive the "Ultimate Corvette" -- the Chevy Corvette C6 ZR1. Here's what I think of it.

Doug, you have to realize that even though it's a top Vette, it's not supposed to brutish when driven normally. A Vette is made to be a normal car during normal driving ( even the mpg is good under normal driving) but when you need it to be an F-22, it's there!

That's a perfect car for celebrities or anyone who has a nice income that wants a car that people won't be looking for compared to a Lamborghini or Ferrari yet still has the agility and power house.

I’m not really into Corvettes either, but this is one of my favorites. Especially because it has a 638 horsepower supercharged V8.

Honestly that’s one of the cool aspects of the ZR1 it doesn’t need to look stupidly exotic to get people’s attention. It’s simple and mean. And damn does it look nice up close.

The ZR1's styling is subtle enough for people to pass it off as a base Corvette....which is cool because you can have all kinds of fun blowing people's doors off that don't know what you have. A good friend of mine has a 2010 CTS-V 4 door and people that don't know what that little V badge means get humbled....and it's funny!

This is the equivalent of a normal person blowing past a totally clean unmarked and full stealth police interceptor (Normal Paint, Civilian Plates, No obvious lights or radio pigtails) in the fast lane on an Interstate and all of a sudden it's glued to your back door and lights you up. Yes, and to top that: The Enzo's FRONT brakes are the same as the REAR ones of the ZR1's :) The ZR1 has even bigger brakes than the Enzo in the front, and it brakes like crazy because of its low weight as well. It's a p[roper no-nonsense track car.

It wasn't my intention to talk the Enzo/Ferrari down, or any car at all for that matter. I don't like 'Ferrari fans' though, I'd rather see gearheads, car enthusiasts, folks who can look behind the 'cheap' materials (read: Corvettes/other cheap cars) and see the underlying beauty. Maybe that will shed some light on my previous comment.

Probably 0 from Ferrari all of ferraris cars fall under this. But all of these companies cars anymore can be listed as luxury exotics because they aren't built for strictly being fast. They're art and I respect them for that. I cannot however respect a Lamborghini aventador for its performance for example.

My uncle passed away in 2020 from Lou Gehrig’s disease and I inherited his 2012 cyber grey with ebony interior zr1, within 2 weeks of having it I sold my 2014 viper. Absolutely incredible car.

bballkid7409 It did when it was new. I think it was 3yr/36000m or something like that. If you buy a used one, you can get an extended warranty, of course. The last year for C6 ZR1s was 2013, so the manufactures warranty is just about up.

Had one of these for about 2 years. You just NEED to be on a track to really get anywhere near what this car can do. You can only do on-ramp to 120mph runs so many times before it gets old.
Just didn't have time to take it to the track like I was hoping. Yeah, you can show up most everything on the road if there is enough room ahead of you. But, in a couple of seconds you are going fast enough to lose your license. On the plus side, it was reliable and dealer service, what little was required, cost no more than it would for any other Chevy.
It was a shame to just have it sit in the garage and stare at it. But, it was fun and evidently the new owner is tracking it regularly.
Now you can easily pick up a used one with low miles for 60K.
Another cool bit was the factory to dealer copy about the car. It was lengthy, describing how to protect the ceramic rotors so they're not chipped when removing a wheel, and stuff like that. But, there was this section which, in lay terms basically said "this is the most expensive car GM has ever built. The customers who buy this car are not your usual Chevy white trash. You have to treat them with white gloves, their expectations for customer service will be akin to a premium brand." It was pretty funny.

I'm not sure how excited you can get when you're going the speed limit in the suburbs. The Corvette is meant to be both a high performance sports car as well as a one/two person practical daily drive car. It's honestly a perfect balance.

Why is anyone arguing it's price? Look at what it can do performance wise (pretty much slaughtered every car on the planet when it came out) and yet it was only 100k. The brakes are the same units from a Ferrari FXX race car ($12,000 USD just for those thank you), you then have one of the strongest factory engines ever made ( they're over $20,000 new), the best tires money can buy, the most advanced suspension on road cars in 2009 etc etc. How much was a 458 back then, 250k? So should GM of spent the other 150k on "quirks" to please you? Hell for the other 150k GM probably could've stitched the seats with the popes nut hair, made the thing fly, and put you up in a Bilagio Villa for a month with as much coke as your nose and heart could take. My point is simply that it's extremely overpriced and no street legal aston martin has ever really been super fast yet he was amazed by it.

For some reason there are a lot of Corvettes in my area, so I guess I'm used to the general shape? Maybe I'd change my mind if I saw the car in person. I love the way the Audi R8 looks. It's a preference thing, I guess. I don't see many of those around though, so maybe that's a factor for me.
Honestly 80,000 usd would be just right for a car with this much performance in a GM car.
the CTS-V is a crazy fast sedan, of course you can´t get the look of vette, but is more roomy and they have a "sleeper factor" which is very interesting

The Joker you said corners matter so I have you information that proves that it has good handling, and it does hold a candle to other recent supercars such as the 488. Not familiar to the build quality as I don't know all of the materials that are used other than a ton of carbon fiber. The cars will have to be around for a little longer to see after a few years what parts break and what parts don't.

I drove my bosses 2011 ZR1 on multiple occasions. Easily the most fun I've ever had driving anything. Brutal acceleration, and the cornering grip was insane with the 335 rear tires. The sound of that engine too!

I learned to drive in a 71 LT 1/4 speed. At the time I was excited because it was a Corvette and my father and I had just finished restoring it. But it rode poorly, had awful foot room, and wasn't quick... We had it up to 125 a few times, but it wasn't an earth shattering accelerator

I actually love the that it mostly looks like a standard corvette. I love the sleeper look. I absolutely love understated sports cars. My favorite car is a 2000 Ferrari 550.

the glass on the hood was put there to meet specs out of the factory to pass inspection and so the supercharger would fit the hood. not meant to replicate super cars but only put there for functionality

It's funny all the things you don't like about it are all the things Porsche fans tout. It's tame everyday drivability. It's ability to be normal. Until you want to go nuts. I think you missed the boat on this one. This car is like a Porche. Polarizing but undeniably awesome. Worth every penny.

The C6 ZR1 has been, and will remain to be, my favorite Corvette ever. Ever since I saw the video of it riding that LP670-4 SV's bumper, which was supposed to be Lamborghini's best attempt at a race car for the road at the time, I was hooked. For under $100,000, you can own a car that keeps pace with a $500,000 stripped out, V12 track-focused flagship Lamborghini. Amazing. (Don't get me wrong, the ZR1 sounds good, but that final iteration of the Bizzarrini V12 is my favorite sounding car of all time and I understand that given the chance I would own the LP670-4 SV over the ZR1 10 times out of 10)

Even base c4 vettes were one of the best cars at it's time sure cause of regulations the hp wasn't there but they still had torque for days and handled better than most sport cars today

I loved my 99 Passat 1.8T. It had great motorway performance, solid handling, smooth clutch and buttery smooth shifter, and it was extremely reliable. I had to sell it when I moved back to the U.S. but I sold it at 160k miles. Only a few little things went wrong as expected for a car with such mileage. It was well worth the 2000 pounds I paid for it.

I had a Corvette completely modded beside the original engine block that was bored out. Redone exhaust, intake, drive train. It looked like every other C5, one good push of the throttle and it sounded like I was at the race track
Since this car is actually a track weapon, its pretty impressive that it can also be mundane on city streets. Funny how now, in 2023, these have creapt back up to the six figure price range.
Once you put that loud pedal down and wind it out, you soon realize what all the hype is about. There are not even a handful of other cars to compare it to in that price range that offer that kind of all around performance / handling / braking let alone Huge Grin / Smiles Per Gallon. I don't care if you are a Corvette hater or "never liked Corvettes" kind of guy - anyone who drives it will get that same huge grin on their face after putting that pedal down.
The fact that it is still docile to drive around town is even better. Last thing you want out of car is one to beat you up around town and the only good thing about it is it's quick.
Sure the Corvette interior is boring and lame but do you really have time to knit pick those details when you actually just enjoy driving the car?
Funny thing is that is actually the "nicer" interior - had you compared to a regular C6 base you'd see the difference. There is a lot more plastic in a base and a lot less leather and stitching.
Of course a regular Joe may just think "it's a normal Corvette" but any marginal enthusiast (regardless of taste in cars) should surely know the difference between a base model and a ZR1. If you put them together they have a significant difference in looks / stand / appearance all around.
MrMhmm my dad absolutely hated corvettes his entire life. All of em. Till the corvette zr1 came out. Nearly 10 years later now he bought one. After owning a string of BMW m3's and he will NEVER be going back
