Europe sovereignty: ‘Pandemic, war made us discover we have to reduce our dependencies’ | DW News

- France's Macron says Europe must shape its own destiny:
French President Emmanuel Macron discussed his conception of "European sovereignty" in a key address at the Nexus institute in The Hague on Tuesday.
"It means that we must be able to choose our partners and shape our own destiny, rather than being, I would say, a mere witness of the dramatic evolution of this world," he said, adding that this could be done "in a cooperative manner in keeping with our spirit of openness and partnership."
His speech came after he caused a stir over the weekend with remarks on China the US and Taiwan.
"The question we need to answer, as Europeans, is the following: Is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No," Macron told Les Echos and Politico on Friday. "The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the US agenda and a Chinese overreaction."
Politicians in the United States, Europe and China criticized those remarks but the White House said on Monday it was "confident" in the relationship with France despite Macron's comments.
Macron spoke in English outlining his vision for a new era of "European sovereignty."
"Pandemic and war just pushed us in a situation to discover that we have to reduce our dependencies if you want to preserve the European identity," he said.
"We can set up a new economic doctrine which will allow us to reconcile creating jobs, financing our social model, dealing with climate change and being more sovereign and deciding for ourselves," he said.
"This is critical in this period when we have war and our economy is being weaponized," Macron added.
He said it should be based on five pillars: competitiveness, industrial policy, protectionism, reciprocity
The speech was part of the first formal state visit by a French president to the Netherlands in more than two decades.
Macron and his wife Brigitte were greeted by Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.
The royals were set to host Macron for a state dinner after the speech.
He was also scheduled to see the hot-ticket Johannes Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and meet Prime Minister Mark Rutte on a canal boat.
The visit coincides with widespread unrest and strikes back in France, after Macron sought to pass his increase in the pension age from 62 to 64 by decree, fearing it might be voted down in the lower house, the National Assembly.

France has always pushed for an independent Europe, led by France of course.
True that but He is kinda right you know? Europe has become a "tool" for greater Powers to Test their dominance in this World no matter if they are from the West or the East
I am not against more European independent decision making. But I support being an equal ally to the US over China. The Americans are our friends. But nothing wrong about an increasingly independent European position
Yep. The spirit of the little general is alive and well as
In all seriousness and without directly accusing an entire people for their leadership, either France or Germany always wanted to rule the European continent.
Spain has given up on it as it was probably too much effort.
And the British, other than controlling their own neighborhood and colonies, just wanted to be left alone.
They primarily wanted to control the sea lanes so that France, Spain, and later Germany would not come knocking on their doors.

Well he should be saying 'French identity' , there is no such thing as "European identity' because from the sound of it he speaks as if he is speaking for Europe. That is called interfering sovereignty. Europe and the EU are not only France and the French.

He's right in the fact that Europe must not be dependent on other nations like Russia, China and the US.
However, for this to happen, Europe has to invest more in defense, more in its industries, more in its energy supplies and start mining for its own resources.
Taboos would have to be broken, that have not been brought up in Europe for many decades.
Countries like France and Germany would have to take a leadership position and create a real viable army and be incredibly reliable for Eastern Europe to put their trust into.
Honestly, I don't see this happening today. Nor do I see this happening in the near future.
It can happen, but not with the France-Germany traditional axis. Poland is already becoming more important because of Ukraine, Belgium is rapidly evolving into the cultural and political center of the entire continent. The concept of Europe that Macron has in mind lies in the past, while a new Europe is already on the rise. This requires the voice and responsibility of the more fluid approach that the youth has, not rusty old farts who still believe in negotiating everything for 5+ years before acting. I’d like the 14 countries using the 14 African countries using the CFA franc to have independence too.
Replace it with a currency not controlled from Paris and that does not require African currency and gold to be held by France. CFA stands for French Colonies of Africa, and while they renamed this, the currency remained. It was a condition of independence from France.

It seems that you and the minister don't understand how things work in a codependent world.
A cold in a place like europe or us, is a pneumonia in some other places around the globe.
Europe is not the sole centre of the world but the supply of grain from ukraine still caused risks of famine for a huge number of people in many places.
A war in Taiwan will be everybody's problem, you can bet on that. Europe still remains a bit egocentric but it will learn to overcome it.
Macron is essentially trying to say leaning on US to minimise defence spending, going to China with business leaders to secure contracts and trying to convince of the world of Europe's relevance if not leadership is a difficult juggle
Add to that, preaching EU unity while crafting his own foreign policy without even calling up Berlin. The spectacle of him with Von Leiden on the same trip pushing two different agendas was embarrassing. Not sure why Von Leiden played ball.
It’s hard to ignore Europe’s obvious decline in global relevance. Small and insignificant tech sector, rapidly aging population with few young workers, and constant over reliance on the US for everything since WWII
@@luciustarquiniuspriscus1408 Wait, Berlin didn't play ball with Europe by creating an Energy price shield massively subsidised by the state.

This guy has a point, no nation should be dependent on a country that has a risk of entering a large war. Besides, the Europeans shouldn’t have to deal with conflict in Asia just because the
U.S is in a tense rivalry.
I am an American, I do not enjoy being American, I would rather be European.
Good!
Not being dependent on the US doesn’t mean being “against the US”
Not in the American mind. If your not a vassal you're an enemy...
You are clearly too naive to understand the U.S's mindset then
But in america government eyes, yes it is, look how CNN will twist the narrative
Lol they werent talking about independence in ww2....France would be speaking German...and so would Russia. and China would be speaking Japanese

I think the US would be happy if Europe could be militarily independent
You think wrong. The US would lose most of its influence and more importantly its ability to strong arm european countries to buy american weapons....
Despites what they say the US actually wants and love that europe give them the oportunity to keep influence in one of the most prosperous region in the world....
Witout it the balance of power would make China WAY above the US on the world stage !
Take a step back and try to analyse things from different angles...
that will question the existance of united states as super power
Europe independence will give less the leverage for US to control Europe, of course it will not be happy
No! Influence over EU is strategic in limiting Russia, and Americans never trusted Germany after WW2. They always remind them who won the war. The highest number of NATO camps and nuclear bombs are placed in Germany and Italy. Coincidence? USA wants a weak Europe.
u are delusional american.
not surprising tho
As if immigrant that grew up in America it makes me feel more entitled than ever to say this. We need more friends than enemies, we already have invested in the past, to make peaceful progress and success throughout the world. we do not want any problems or war.
Are you sure about that? You should read some history and come back.
Yeah a guy called Nev. Chamberlain wanted peace too.
whethere immigrants or not americans forget the 25+ countries they've ravaged war on in the last 50 years
@MegaClaw .. add to that Libya, Syria, Somalia. They are very good at pretending to "keep the peace" while they arm the same dissidents

Every nation must look first to its own people !!! Finally a good effort from Mr Macron ... and .... at last a small positive sign for all of us Europeen !!! Merci Monsieur Macron !!! - Looking for us and dealing with the world - ... that's what we need !
As an American Macron proposing europe to deal with conflicts on their own is good, but it seems like he wants Europe to be led by France ,and disregards other europeans opinion on what he’s proposing .
I don’t think he said they should deal with it on there own just that he doesn’t want to help his Allie’s probably because we already flipped the bill in ukraine now he’s like we don’t have to back u up at all

It’s nice to know when the time for “Allie’s” to do their part, they decide to become strangers.

Macrons main issue is that France is a second tier player and that hurts his ego.
and the fact that he want's to be the head of the EU, wishful thinking , building castles in the air.
I wouldnt say "2nd tier" since its technically a "1st tier" player in Europe
But the biggest issue comes with the idea that he wants France to be THE biggest player, not one amongst many but one in front of the rest, problem being, France ISNT anything close to the biggest player he wants it to be and no one else wants France to be said biggest player too.
Its quite amazing how Macron thinks more akin to early XXth France (aka Lead Europe) than anything close to Cold War France (be part of Europe, preferably as leading role, but not necessary (especially after De Gaulle left))
His ideas arent 100% terrible (aside from home front but lets be real, nearly no one like him back then in France, it hasnt really changed) but his ego just makes France looks worse than it actually wants to be

Europe should make it's own foreign and defense policies - as equal allies, capable of standing on their own feet. EU is the most powerful economic engine and a wealthiest union of countries of the world. They're certainly capable of being independent.

At some point Europe needs to come to a conclusion of wether it is an American ally/ vassal or just a colony
Of course
why there are not tens of thousands of French soldiers on the eastern border of Europe. If the US is not supposed to protect us, why france dont do it?
It's common sense for Europe to be less dependent on other countries.
Not when we all share the same planet as our home. we should be growing closer together not trying to stand alone.
Macron's days are numbered. I already told my operatives to fund more protests in France. He is doomed to fail in the next election. Just a matter of time before he gets kicked out of his presidency so no worries.

Europe is a continent not an individual country
It wouldn't be the first time that country turned on the USA. They did that in WW2 also. That's why a lot of ww2 veterans hated the French
It has always been like that - The US single-handedly fought the Pacific War - In Europe, France without the US is speaking German or Russian today.
It’s wasn’t single handed completely. The British did lose ships and men fighting there too.
