  • France's Macron says Europe must shape its own destiny:
French President Emmanuel Macron discussed his conception of "European sovereignty" in a key address at the Nexus institute in The Hague on Tuesday.
"It means that we must be able to choose our partners and shape our own destiny, rather than being, I would say, a mere witness of the dramatic evolution of this world," he said, adding that this could be done "in a cooperative manner in keeping with our spirit of openness and partnership."
His speech came after he caused a stir over the weekend with remarks on China the US and Taiwan.
"The question we need to answer, as Europeans, is the following: Is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No," Macron told Les Echos and Politico on Friday. "The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the US agenda and a Chinese overreaction."
Politicians in the United States, Europe and China criticized those remarks but the White House said on Monday it was "confident" in the relationship with France despite Macron's comments.
Macron spoke in English outlining his vision for a new era of "European sovereignty."
"Pandemic and war just pushed us in a situation to discover that we have to reduce our dependencies if you want to preserve the European identity," he said.
"We can set up a new economic doctrine which will allow us to reconcile creating jobs, financing our social model, dealing with climate change and being more sovereign and deciding for ourselves," he said.
"This is critical in this period when we have war and our economy is being weaponized," Macron added.
He said it should be based on five pillars: competitiveness, industrial policy, protectionism, reciprocity
The speech was part of the first formal state visit by a French president to the Netherlands in more than two decades.
Macron and his wife Brigitte were greeted by Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.
The royals were set to host Macron for a state dinner after the speech.
He was also scheduled to see the hot-ticket Johannes Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and meet Prime Minister Mark Rutte on a canal boat.
The visit coincides with widespread unrest and strikes back in France, after Macron sought to pass his increase in the pension age from 62 to 64 by decree, fearing it might be voted down in the lower house, the National Assembly.

Yep. The spirit of the little general is alive and well as
In all seriousness and without directly accusing an entire people for their leadership, either France or Germany always wanted to rule the European continent.
Spain has given up on it as it was probably too much effort.
And the British, other than controlling their own neighborhood and colonies, just wanted to be left alone.
They primarily wanted to control the sea lanes so that France, Spain, and later Germany would not come knocking on their doors.

He's right in the fact that Europe must not be dependent on other nations like Russia, China and the US.
However, for this to happen, Europe has to invest more in defense, more in its industries, more in its energy supplies and start mining for its own resources.
Taboos would have to be broken, that have not been brought up in Europe for many decades.
Countries like France and Germany would have to take a leadership position and create a real viable army and be incredibly reliable for Eastern Europe to put their trust into.
Honestly, I don't see this happening today. Nor do I see this happening in the near future.

It can happen, but not with the France-Germany traditional axis. Poland is already becoming more important because of Ukraine, Belgium is rapidly evolving into the cultural and political center of the entire continent. The concept of Europe that Macron has in mind lies in the past, while a new Europe is already on the rise. This requires the voice and responsibility of the more fluid approach that the youth has, not rusty old farts who still believe in negotiating everything for 5+ years before acting. We have specialized in making things to sell to other countries And be involved in globalization. It has given us as people the ability to consume great amounts of products without producing it all on our own, But in consequence we have negated every other product that we should be able to consume. I mean who do you know knows how to farm or build a house? Who do you know that can live without gasoline, natural gas, or coal. We have become so dependent on each other and have forgotten to produce things of quality for each other. We just consume.

how is "think for your self" turning against ally? isn't it the opposite? If it isn't, you should really reconsider your "ally". I don't know about you, but I would much prefer a friend who welcomes me to think for my self.

Looks like India is an impotent bystander.
Watching their russian weapons dealer get mauled in Ukraine and in economic war with the West.
What you gonna do about it India?
Screech "hipocrisy" and desperately buy more russian energy resources?
Right now Indian military is crying because their weapons dealer cannot give them what they bought. They will buy from the West instead.
So give me a break about India ..

Chinese media absolutely love him. "ROCK STAR PRESIDENT in CHINA" Chinese Communist love him as much as they secretly loved Trump who seemed to be against China yet every action he did somehow helped China no matter what.. like a double agent of sorts except Macron is transparent about he being a puppet for China.
Perhaps France should consider their place in EU if this continues

France lost its masculinity in WW1. Now they only know how to flip flop and bend over. They'll let anyone spread their cheeks, it makes them feel like they have a spine.
Macron already walked back his comments... Flip flipper.
He is not a leader of Europe, he only has his self interest in mine and being reelected.

@@MsElleAime So in world war II should of England, United States and Russia liberated France? The French only care about themselves and when it applies to them.
And when your women gave it up to a German soldier. They were beaten, tard and feathered for having relationships with the enemy... By the same Frenchman that did nothing when the Germans came.
You can let your women and children be raped and tortured. That's your french prerogative.
As an American, we value human life and defend women and children. Will not stand by idly as free country gets annihilated.
But as a French person, you're welcome to bend over and pull down your pants and then blame your own women for doing so as well.

Be damn who try to so division between Us and Europe the greatest alliance of all times.People from both sides of the ocean won't allow division.

The “alliance” that invaded Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria for no good reason apart from good-old imperialism. Europe and the US deserve to rot together for the centuries of colonialism they forced upon the rest of the world.
