Sherpas | Documentary on The True Heroes of Mount Everest

- Sherpas - the True Heroes of Mount Everest showcases the work, hardships, and life of the Sherpas at Mount Everest. The film follows the expedition of the Swiss mountain guide Kari Kobler and his European climbers as they climb the highest mountain in the world, a feat un-imaginable without the support and guidance of their hired Nepali Sherpas. Among the Sherpas is Dawa, who has peaked Everest thirteen times. Throughout the film, the Sherpas share their stories, feelings, and fears on the climb. They tell us bluntly what it means for them to work for Western climbers and to act as their leaders on the top of the world, sometimes risking their own lives to save a Western client.
Every climbers goal is to reach the top, while the sherpas is to come back to base camp. This is interesting but sad reality way of life of sherpas. And i absolutely salute them.
More respect for Sherpas, less respect for the mountaineers who have everything done for them. They didn't even bury their comrade, Gianni. It was the Sherpas who made a grave and held a service for them. The Sherpas should have more power to negotiate their pay and conditions for service on the mountain, with more clear terms, so they aren't as terribly exploited by the Westerners who visit Chomolungma.
I'm glad watching this, because now If I ever hear someone say ''They climbed Everest'' I know what they really mean is ''I climbed a pre-made path set-up by brave sherpas''.
So well put mate👌🙏
This documentary gives us a much deeper look at the hard working SHERPA that support all the Western climbers. I am astonished that so many climbers claim a climbing victory based on the fact that the SHERPAS have prepared the way for them, provided for them and carried all the supplies for them!! Tables for the paying members? Unbelievable luxury at the expense of laboring SHERPAS! It shocked me how many men were on that 5 piece ladder extension. Definitely had to smile at finding a bakery on Mount Everest! Thank you for posting this important documentary...much appreciated!!
why dyou keep putting Sherpas in all caps? just weird
Well, it's like the show Survivor. You have a group of people pretending they are pulling off an amazing feat of just " surviving". Meanwhile, out of the camera shot, you probably have a hospitality table laden with snacks, a whole bunch of tents or trailers filled with producers, boom boys, lighting and sound people, grips, etc. And let's not forget, probably a half a mile a way you have the actual ethnic population that lives in this area 365 days a year without a backup crew to assist them. That's what makes it so ridiculous; Westerners making a big deal and patting themselves on the back for doing something that the local population does all the time, and no one is giving them a magazine cover.
These guys manage to breathe and climb to the top, and make it back down, which granted is difficult; but everything is done for them. All they have to do is make it to the camp and crawl into the tent, and they get a big round of applause for accomplishing that. Meanwhile, the Sherpas have already made around 30 trips carrying food, pots and pans, bedding, equipment, oxygen, tents etc. plus set everything up. The Westerners manage to " get to " the tent, and " they're " considered the mountain climbers. Honestly, if the Sherpas hadn't been conditioned to work so cheaply, they could own all the guiding companies, organize everything, do the work, and make all the profits. Instead, they work for practically nothing. Other people are saying they are well paid because the normal income for a Sherpa is around $500 a year. So basically they take advantage of that. It's no different than American companies setting up their factories in Bangladesh because they can pay those workers less than $1 a day, and then turn around and sell the products at a 5000% markup and keep the profits. Just because you can get away with something doesn't make it right. Just because people have been conditioned to expect bad treatment and slave wages doesn't make it right.
@@wmnoffaith1 WELL SAID!!!
@@wmnoffaith1 the westerners lol your mindset betrayed what you said haha all but Nepali use Sherpa no? Not just westerners your ignorance is forgiven though as you are clearly biased based on geography.

49:10. Sherpa carrying 12 oxygen bottles, weighing 92 pounds, to an elevation of 26,000 feet. Wow! 👍
Emotional to see the sherpa's efforts on the himalayan. They deserve more and more. Salutes to the real sherpa pride of Nepal.. ✌
You must not realize how mountaineers all admire, and adore the Sherpas. They do get credit.
I had read that there were mountaineers who were carried on the shoulder by the sherpas because they were exhausted and absolutely wanted to reach the summit, do you have any confirmations?
@@conni-switzerland9515 I obviously do not know whether it is true or not (I couldn't find any source). However, I imagine carrying someone above 8000 meters on your shoulders seems very hard to do. In this height any physical activity is enormously more demanding and more tiring than at sea level. Hence, it would require a lot of effort to doing so, on top of that the technical challenges of the terrain.
@@Augenhose I've heard of Sherpas "short-roping" clients. Essentially tying a rope to the client to help them summit or get back to camp. Still an amazing feat of strength and endurance.
💯👍
On one of my first solo climbs (not everest, another himalayan peak) I carried 18 kg on my back, that was no joke. The pull you feel when you are climbing steep ice walls, is unimaginable, its like a person is pulling you from behind with straps on your shoulder. I had to leave some gear behind while descending. These guys absolute monster and I mean that in the most respectful way possible.
That one Sherpa carrying 42kg monsterrrr
Imagine the trash layed around that mountain, its devastating. I think these sherpas also cleaned up the stuff people leave behind.
what do ya want ? a medal? lol
great performance
What did you expect? That's how gravity works lol

You do realize Purba Tashi Sherpa is the best ever! He has summited more than anyone on the planet.

Its like modern day slavery. Where does all that money go? Its not for any technology, since people have been climbing with icepicks since the beginning.
Sherpas should be the ones to get their own movie, or even a book.

These are the mountaineers . The rest of the climbers are tourists on safari.
Well you need a Sherpa to climb Everest and the Nepalese government forbids you from climbing it without one. Either way its very dangerous to do without one. But mountaineers are mountaineers. Even if you had someone carry your stuff, the hike is no joke.

Sir Edmund Hillary ( 1st to climb Mt Everest 1951) died I 2008 aged 88yrs, 6mths after returning to NZ from Kathmandu. He never forgot the sherpas and built dozens of schools and medical centres in the Himalayas, he went there many times with his family. He was forever great full toTensing Norway the Sherpa and kept in contact with him and his family.
Plus he funded the runway so people can access the Solo Khumbu.
It's AMAZING what he has DONE!!!!
Edmund got a huge pay and he didnt have to work after that his whole life. But poor Tenzin Sherpa didnt get any more money to support himself and his family. He died while working for a Western team.
So please for the sake of humanity, dont compare those two men who became the first to step on the top the highest. mountain
Tenzing norgay*
it was 1953 the year hillary and Norgay made it to everest summit
fuck him
Sherpa mingma is a hero. He did everything he could, he did so much more that almost anyone would/could. Risking his own life like that. Incredible and brave man. So are all the sherpas, they deserve far more recognition for their bravery.
Probably the first time anyone has asked this Sherpa about his life and he just spills everything out: "well my father..." and in a minute he's already crying. The emotional constipation amongst these people is intense.
I am amazed by the super strength of the Sherpas. Respect.
and amazing fly hacks for the cammeraman
Genetics..Tibetans/sherpas have EGLN1 and EPAS1 genes that allows us to acclimate better at high elevation.
Most of the comments are the appreciation for the sacrifices made by the Sherpas, that’s nice but what about the cameraman....he’s the reason we could able to watch this extraordinary. So here,I give a very very big thanks to the cameraman 🙏🙏
what about him? his gear was taken up that mountain by Sherpas...
I believe they stated the camera was manned by a Sherpa
@@vindictivetiger3958 I don't think so, camera man had to do his job, filming the process. How could he even do it when the camera was carried by a Sherpa? Yes they help them with the standee, the battery, the extra film rolls and stuff, but he himself carries the camera, running around in the terrace finding a good spot to film. The documentary seems to be filmed long time ago, I wonder if by that time fly cam and 4K Go Pro was used. If not, the camera man is respectful.
@@TrangNguyen-my2xs... There is more than 1 sherpa.... You see the other sherpas being filmed, There is another sherpa with the cameraman, after the cameraman films the shot he wants he hands his equipment off to his sherpa to carry.... Most of these "tourist" climbers and cameraman can't walk without breathing extra oxygen so they need to carry their oxygen tanks... These sherpas don't need extra oxygen so they carry the equipment and supplies....lots of supplies, food, camping gear, climbing gear etc....
It's easy to carry a go pro lol
Now I have more respect for the sherpas and less for these "mountaineers". Can't believe they left their personal crap behind and the sherpas had to carry twice as much weight. How frustrating!
tlali the Europeans were so damned lazy. Nothing to be proud of.
That made my blood boil as well. How entitled can one person be? Also, at the beginning, when the Swiss guy said: "We bring our intelligence, you bring your strength", or something like that. Really, mate, you deem the Sherpas as less smart than you, because...??
Not every explorer was guided by Sherpas or “carried” metaphorically by them
Incredible Inverts They’re addressing the mountaineers who use sherpas
Not everyone is climatized with low oxygen!!!! People need to stop complaining! it doesn't matter if you are strong, it has to do with your hemoglobin, the less, the better to climatize!
The Sherpas are the true heroes. I have huge respect for their courage, humility and hard work. They should get paid far more for risking their lives.
What incredible respect these men show to a stranger who came to the mountain and died there.

Sad to see these heroes make 5000 dollars whereas companies have charged 40000 swiss francs per person
Most part of the money goes to Nepali officials for permits.
That’s why Nepal allows so much Tourists up there.
shashank kala They make twice as much as a teacher in a sixth of the time. And they get a ton of respect.
And the nerve to bargain at the mountain.. after the expedition has started.. Shame on Kobler.
@Clorox Bleach I don't know about Nepal but alot of impoverished countries have children risk their limbs and lives in mines for literal pennies. Look up thr mica mines. Mica goes into your car, airplanes, and makeup. Yes western products.
Of all western exploitation and greed Sherpas are hardly the bottom of the food chain. Since you're likely a consumer of a variety of goods that exploit workers and not an Everest climber it's probably more worth it to you to know about the former.
@Tee Bone well the companies can always take less am i right?? if they truly value the work the sherpas do then where's the harm in making a little less money in return for better pay for the sherpas, if there even is a 'fair pay' for them (which there isn't). So yea while it isn't the westerners fault that Nepal is poor, exploiting them isn't the right thing to do either, so curb that privilege a little

What I love is how you see humans having such a hard time but the Himalayan "blue sheep" live up at those high altitudes, it's home for them, and in so many of the scenes there are birds flying around without a care in the world.
I appreciate the plain reporting style of the documentary, without any deeper comment or criticism involved. That is all up to the audience.
A) It is obvious: Sherpas are exploited, at danger of their lives, for them making a living. This is shameful, this resembles bad practice originating back to times of colonialism. Still though they earn above average money the sherpas are denied of a sustainable profit, they cannot do this for forever. Exploitation.
B) Tourism in developing countries per se seems as a win-win situation. In fact money is transferred from the rich to the less rich. I support travelling. I believe it educates people. Eventually it is up to the individual to choose their destination, and the way they want to consume abroad. Being stingy on money abroad is embarrasing. Especially wrong it is to set a performance based loan on Mount Everest, where this implies people endangering their lives for making more money. Shameful practice.
C) Eventually the tourism at Mount Everest can hardly be considered as mountaneering no more. Listen to Reinhold Messner on that topic.
D) I very apprectiate to not see left out the tragic death of Gianni. While his compatriots were resting down, the Sherpas were trying to save his life... RIP.
it's not win-win as long as tourists leave their fucking trash behind and turn these pristine environments into landfills, like Everest is becoming.
Great comment
Thank you for your well thought out intelligent comment 🙏🏽
Respect to the Sherpas 99.9% and 0.1% respect for those foreign climbers.
cmon this is a stupid comment. Why not have 100% respect for both parties? I mean at least respect the foreign climbers for their bravery and courage to even take up this dangerous adventure
Exactly bleach
Without the foreign climbers there wouldn't be any use of sherpas
The foreign climbers provide an economy and jobs to the sherpas. Respect for both
I think this is an excellent comment. The gringos still get some respect, but the mighty sherpa gets big respect.

Didn't know only westerners were allowed to climb mount everest
Most of the alpinists aren't close to the elite athletes I imagined for this truly superhuman feat, if you look at their age or overall form. Only the sherpas' work makes it possible for rich guys in their forties and fifties to make their trip up Mt Everest. Those westerners are confirmed climbers, but honestly, they aren't in their prime and rely so heavily on the cheap labour of local people to achieve this "ultimate prowess". Cheers to that documentary for giving more insight on their lives and answering many questions I asked myself when watching other " Vlogs" about white people surpassing themselves on the tallest mountains... Without ever mentioning all the carrying and camps, ropes, ladders, oxygen, cooking, trash...set up by those brave guys. Himalayan mouteneering is a rich man's leisure.

Bob Billings They don't. 14 sherpas died in 2014 and the tour company gave their families not 1 cent.
It’s modern day slave labour. They are paid pennies compared to their European and American business counterparts. It’s horrific and any climber who chooses to pay these companies either ignorantly willingly or willingly is not a true mountaineer!

My student's father used to be a Sherpa guide. I'm so shocked that they don't always get a lot of compensation for putting their lives on the line.
there're a lot of gringos writing books about the "quest of the everest". Come on, the sherpas are doing everything. Those guys are the true heroes, and they do that only for feeding thier families not for "ego" or "personal glory"

I don't know if this people have some sindicate, socual secure, life ensurance, etc etc ... Thanks for opening my eyes on this "dark side" of the alpinists
These Sherpas should look into collective bargaining. None of these high dollar Everest expeditions would be possible without their grueling labor.
Nepal and Tibet need to outlaw non-Nepalese/Tibetans from arranging expeditions on any of their mountains.. They need to snatch that up like the King of Bhutan did.
@@vindictivetiger3958 That wouldn't be in their best interest, Nepal is a poor country and brings in 300million$ on mountain permits alone. These sherpas - What amazing men, incredible bodies, fantastic attitudes, the best of humanity
At 1:17:55 the words from Sherpa Norbu hit me hard, feeling the exhilaration and close to something that feels spiritual and mystic is why a mountaineer tries to climb any summit of a mountain... This documentary moved me, of course, a sherpa is the best climber doing the most technical and hard work while ascending, but for real mountaineers, those who really climb up without any support, sometimes for them the will to succeed to the summit is more than the will to survive. Mountains are really sacred.
Hillary Step, named after the first person to climb Everest?? What about Tenzing Norgay..? Who did all the hard work, cooking, ropes, ladders carrying the loads etc.. Not a word about him... Shameful..
I agree. This is just bullshit and such documentaries expose hidden injustices and cruelty
They would’ve never climbed it without Hillary Step and the others before him initiating the climb anyway. Wouldn’t have had the gear needed or the motivation to do it. Get fucked. The locals NEVER climbed anywhere near that altitude until whites initiated the climbs. The locals can call that spot whatever they want. They have their own language. Why are you not protesting calling it Mount Everest?? The locals call it Chomolungma. Yep, now stfu.

For all those comments saying a real climber should climb the Everest without support, please remember this is Everest, not Mont Blanc. No one has ever climbed Everest without any kind of support carrying all his gear and food from Kathmandu. Messner did climbed alone and without oxygen from the base camp carrying his gear (alpine style) but he still used the fixed ropes over the icefall and up high in the mountain. The fastest climb up and back is 8h by a sherpa, again he used the fixed ropes. Just crossing the ice fall without using the fixed ladders and ropes is simply humanly impossible, so there's no pure alpine style possible on Everest
