Lyrics:
Up above me are the skies like the twinkle in your eyes
These things are the color of the blues
In the mail your letter came, the ink and paper looked the same
Yes, blue must be the color of the blues
Bluebird sitting in the tree seems to sympathize with me
For he's not singing like he used to do
The pretty waters in the sea feel as cold as you left me
Yes, blue must be the color of the blues
There's a rainbow overhead with more blue than gold and red
Blue must be the color angels choose
A blue dress you proudly wore when you left to return no more
Yes, blue must be the color of the blues
Blue days come and blue days go, how I feel nobody knows
Life is mighty empty without you
There's a blue note in each song that I sing since you are gone
Yes, blue must be the color of the blues
Yes, blue must be the color of the blues
Many moons ago, over 50 years, John Prine was just starting out. I had the divine privilege to see him close up acoustic on a local community college gymnasium floor with only about 20 people in attendance. He was unknown at the time, but what an immediate awesome presence! His music was incredible! Such a unique talent. Lots of story telling in between songs. He captured everyone's attention. I was an instant fan. To this day I'm grateful to have had that experience. I'll miss him forever....
I've never seen him perform. My introduction to him was on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973. He sang Sam Stone which moved me very much. Just a young lad with a guitar. He blew me away. I'm glad you saw him around that time. It sounds like a wonderful experience. (I am a little envious!)
I love his music and glad his music lives on.
Have been a lifelong fan of John's...saw him live in Ithaca NY at a small venue in the 1970s. Have many of his albums. An incredible talent! Love the way he melds life's experiences into his songs...both with humor and sorrow. He's greatly missed. There will never be another!
WOW What a great memory
I play music and one of my styles I try to pattern after John Prine. What a fine person and musician.
It may be ironic , but I must agree with Jason Isbell , that American poet , John Prine , aged like whiskey. His vocal delivery got better with his recovery from "C" RIP...Beautiful American Man.
For John to honor one of his heroes, George Jones, and have Susan do a duet with him on this 1958 gem, is my favorite of his duets. Susan Tedeschi has evolved into one of the best voices out there. And this tribute is just another side of John that made him John. I miss him.
Massive fan of Susan
If that don't tug at yer heart strings , you ain't got none . Thanx John for all the years ...
just heard this
I wonder if JP wrote this. I know George Jones also performed this.
Joe Hiett; You are soo right! John and Susan sound GREAT together!!!!!
John Prine is a national treasure.
Indeed he is. Being Canadian I'll call him a worldly treasure, but yes, he's yours.
Amen to that...a thousand times.
he's the greatest love song written ever! !
Yes, yes. That's true... But let's not ignore Susan. She's true blue.
Great tune!
I'm so glad he chose women who have aged with him to make this album instead of younger women. Just one more tribute to his character. Love you, John!
there all younger than him.
He loved singing duets with young ladies. He liked the irony in the lyrics. He liked beautiful feminine voices. He liked the contrast between his gruff presentation and their songbird deliveries. I think.
Can’t believe he’s gone now the world is a much darker place John thanks for all the great music
just listening to blue is the color of the blues what a song what a man rip John x
I actually thinks it's brighter because of the songs he left behind.
argullo5150 yes I agree with that point as well Spanish pipedream & souvenirs are the 2 I’m currently listening to
Good music like this lightens up darker places.
How does anyone give this a negative vote? Regardless of whether a fan or not, this is a fantastic song and performed very well.
Hey Pablo don't get your panties in a bunch.. Take a chill pill ..ain't nobody talking trash over it. Y'all like stirring up problems ?
cause they don't know crap
Saw John Prine at Texas Opra House in Houston back in the 70’s. Followed up Delbert McClintock. Go to go back stage and shake hands with a legend.
Outstanding, if you don't get John Prine, you don't get good music...absolutely one of the best this side of Dylan...any doubts just listen to Angel from Montgomery !
Thinking of John today. Holding him and his family in the Light. Wishing him peace.
I never heard anybody , in my 58 year's ,,with so many great great song's ,and sadly I just discovered is music two week's ago ,RP John .
You have a long path! So many great songs from John. Mexican home, picture in a picture show, bruised orange, angel from Montgomery, fish and whistle, paradise, all the best, you got gold
Enjoy the ruse
E
Same happened to me!
I challenge you to break down the lyrics of a few of his songs...starting with Donald and Lydia

Don't forget "Christmas in prison".
JP is A true American original-born in the Midwest and worked as a blue color worker. Depicted pain, love, emotion of all Americans. There will not be another JP!
Good God; there are so many people in this world with such great talent that never get the props they deserve.
He may have never been a superstar, but his work will be remembered, sung and cherished for as long as people sing and play guitar.
John definitely did...during the last 10 years of his life.
she brings integrity and talent,he brings legend... thanks both of you
Great music by John and Susan,it is a must have
John Prine had great taste in old country tunes. The duets he recorded in his later years, that includes Mac Wiseman too are such a pleasure to listen to. He truly knew how to hit it out of the park.
Robert..George Jones, Loretta Lynn have done a good job, but it's that good ol' boy way of Prine...nothing complicated but that guy could write about the most everyday thing and and get y'all out on da flo...
@@nonzerosum8943 he sure could though he didn’t write this song.
John Prine is a global treaure

Man should be given sainthood. I know of at least five miracles he's performed.
Know what you mean!
RIP John Prine! Great job on a George Jones classic!!
Any time you use colors in your songs as metaphors, it hits me right in the gut. This one, You Got Gold, Blue Umbrella, One Red Rose, Bruised Orange... Love, love, love JP.
God that's beautiful.
Wonderful marriage of voices.
Johnny we hardly knew ya! God bless, man!
Ever a buitifull song
Written by George Jones and Lawton Williams and released by Jones on January 15, 1958.
Ya,says so in the credits.

Thanks for witting out the words!
I'm still angry about his death. It didn't have to be. Thanks, John, for everything.
Another fan. Just sayin
Just superb so sad John is no longer with us....
A great George Jones written song. Great version.
Joe Blow (below) writes, "John Prine is a National Treasure". And he truly is. They should dedicate a National Park to him - or at least a highway!
There is-in western Ky.
Agreed..
Prayers for John 🙏💔
Thanks John. A diamond is what you are.
thanks a bunch John, for opening your own channel... man how this world has changed in 60 years. Either you live in my head, or I live in yours....no one has the power you have to share with planet Earth. Let the real change begin.
Huge Prine fan ... but I'm still chuckling over the humor of the placement of a full throaty rumble under the video of the MG midget pulling through the ticket booth.
So very Prinean.
I second that motion
I totally agree
MGB's and drive in theaters bring to mind Dad making me promise to move my pocket knife over to my left pocket when my date set close in the car... said it would warp the handle before a minner could swim a dipper! great Days they were. 61617
Two of my all-time favorite artist! Perfection!

Thank you for the video.I think I have been to that drive in movie. The music is fantastic.John Prine is one of those rare performers who never disappoints.Great duet.
UA-cam needs a 'LOVE' button!
you made me laugh, good on ya
Maybe my favorite in a while, I love both artists and they bless each other,
Why no love for John Prine in HOF?? I mean really the freakin' Cars and no John Prine??? WTF??????
He would more likely get into the country music hall of fame,he's not that much rock n roll.
He's a hell of a lot more RnR than Miles Davis,Joan Baez, Nat King,The Platters and many more of the inductees. Give a listen to Pink Cadillac and reconsider
@@jopopdrouse8220 John Prine is his own genre
RIP Storyteller

Don't we all...
Wonderful duet!
good one
Cancel please will do again very soon. Love JP s music same with Steve both fantastic. Miss them both!
That one hit me right in the feels.
nice song, nice video , nice car !
Yes, it's a good duet - I love Susan Tedeshi. But I've noticed on almost all of John's duets, he doesn't allow the girls to sing very much harmony, or noe at all like this one. I don't understand why he does that, when harmony vocals would make it sound so much better. If I had one question to ask of him, that would be he one.
My guess, his post surgery voice makes it too difficult now?
He did with his former wife RACHEL PEER, she backed him for years (Sound Of Loneliness, Bruised Orange). But they didn't fit in a different way.... Soo pity !!!!
He's the greatest of ALLtime
Loving this... This is going to be a great album.
❤️
You are missed everyday...
superbe !
I spent many Friday nights at the Sunset Drive-In in Union S.C. It's gone now, theys a factory sitting on top of it. :(
Wow awesome song
John I love what your doing. Advertising world has you and I pegged because every song I pick on UA-cam is preceded by Medicaid Program ads.
