He had to finish the album using the lowest gage string he could find because he didn't have the strength to do bends. It's heartbreaking what happened to him.
If you are a DLR fan, that is a good album, A Little Ain't Enough. Jason is great on that album, as is the other guitar player (I don't recall the name). Edit: Steve Hunter, played slide guitar and rhythm. I felt I was remiss in leaving him out.
I thought he landed a gig with Eddie Van Halen he was supposed to go on tour with Eddie when he got sick I haven't heard anything about him playing with David Lee Roth.
No he auditioned for DLR and got the gig.. there are JB VH demos of his audition on yt. He wound up recording the DLR album sitting on a stool..DLR did not know how to respond cause his whole life was one big success.. So he said Jason didn't work out live..which angered Jason. There is a video of Jason at home when he first got sick and before his breathing was stabilized..where EVH goes to Beckers house to visit..it is very touching to see EVH holding Jason like he wished his hands could cure him. After EVH died the Becker family released it on youtube. RIP EVH.
Jeff Loomis said it took him like 3 months to learn perpetual burn when he covered it a couple years back. That's so insane for any song to take somebody as good as Loomis that long to learn
Thanks for that info, it's great to know that even monster shredders like Loomis find it very hard to nail. I tried to learn that song a decade ago and Perpetual Burn probably was the hardest song I've ever attempted although YngYang Milkshake's Far Beyond the Sun is very close to its difficulty. The most effective method i'm using is to just learn 1 song but master it in a week, By comparison I've learned EVH Eruption in 1 week, Enter Sandman in 3 days, Crazy Train in 3 days, Glassgow Kiss in 3 weeks, Far Beyond the Sun - 4 months..........here's the crazy part, tried learning Perpetual Burn and I'm stuck in the intro for 2 months before I finally nailed it. (Just the opening 3 arpeggio lightning sweeps)....Then I decided to just QUIT because it's really hard and if I continue, it would consume ALL my time, so I decided to just learn easy songs you can play on your sleep.😆 I'd rather learn Creeds "My Sacrifice" and Green Days "Wake me Up when ". 😁(sarc only). Jason Becker is awesome and he rocks!🤘
I remember when I first heard this album, I was completely blown away by it. He is truly gifted musician and I’ve always like his playing better than Marty. Mike Varney introduced people to all the best shredders.🤘🍻
What is worth noticing in that device is that device tracks eyes movement, which taken in consideration the era when his dad made this is truly great engineering!

Hey, thanks for the comment, but the system Jasons dad created isnt software and doesnt track eye movement. It is called Vocal Eyes and you can see how it works on his website or on UA-cam. Still, genius and saved Jasons life! This is a common misconception.

Huge respect for Jason Becker Truly great he was. And not just because of the disease and now we are over praising him... it's really not that at all. He was legitimately that good. Certainly up in the realms of Steve Vai and Martin Freeman. The Ultra elite. The top 1%. The best of the best Run-of-the-mill shredders just pale in comparison to Jason Try learning altitude s, if you ever want a lesson in humility!
Air was the one that got me. his perspectives was really good . Jason is an great modern composer. I think Jason and Marty both are easily as good as Philip Glass or Kitaro, Frank Zappa well that's another story
In my opinion Jason is the most gifted guitarist ever and Perpetual Burn is my all time favorite album, any genre of music! Thanks for spotlighting Jason's genius so others can appreciate the magnitude of what he created in such a short period of time!!!
Becker at the age of 16 was better than most great guitarists get after 40 - 50 year careers. The only person I can think of that comes close is Jason Richardson but even then becker was way younger

Malmsteen or Jason Becker and further back in time didn't. . They didn't have that advantage, they didn't have UA-cam...
I’ve always thought that, I still think perpetual burn is his greatest and most ironic overall shred piece but the second half of Mabel’s fatal fable is the most expressive shred solo I’ve ever heard
This was a great in depth of Jason’s playing and using music theory to show what he’s doing and how it works is a good way to look at someone’s playing
I dunno...first time I've heard it and noooo...I cannot play like this, however my ear, while admiring the absolute stunning masterpiece of skill by his playing...my ear wanted something at some point to take me in a completely different direction. Some kind of, I don't know, at least in the middle. Can't take anything from him however, excellent!

Good Lord Shred, you really do have some fecking great ears. I bought this album on vinyl when it first arrived and even now it's never failed to blow my mind. IIRC Marty always claimed Jason had superior technique, and improved incredibly after they started jamming regularly.......hard to imagine.
I assume the sounds like Steve Vai-like part you are referring to is "For the love of God"? Altitudes came out in '88 and Passion and Warfare in '90. The whammy bar work is definitely a hallmark of Vai. And lastly the two parts share an Asian influence where Altitudes is possibly emulating pitch bending which is common in Asian music. Maybe Marty, the Japanophile that he was/is had an influence on that section? And For the love of God" has an obvious Asian tonality as well. So yeah, not disagreeing at all that it sounds like Vai, just pointing out it likely wasn't inspired by or copied from Master Vai, though obviously Marty and Jason knew of Vai and his earlier works than Passion and Warfare. Brilliant video breakdown and thanks for sharing Jason's work far and wide!
when I met Jason in 2011 I was able to play all of his guitars, he also told me he used the white HURRICANE guitar on perpetual burn and a BOSS overdrive pedal with Marshall JCM800 head. no effects, once he kicks in the OVERDRIVE the first time his technique is flawless, check out MABLES FATAL FABLE!!
Jason was one of my favorites as a kid, couldn't believe what him and Marty were doing, Shrapnel records had some good ones, what ever happened to Bernd Steidl? That guy was an acoustic playing speed demon, if anyone reads this and hasn't heard "irrlichter" you should check it out
I had always noticed guitarists look and feel somewhat nervous around Yngwie. Well if their was ever a guitarist that could match Yngwie,it was Jason. It would be something amazing if all theses guitarists we grew up on, collaborated on something.

@@KepperKleen Just an opinion. I've been listening to instrumental guitar since the 80s. I've got literally thousands of songs by hundreds of guitarists known and unknown. And IF you realize "Air" was composed by Jason at 16(I believe) you might agree. It is breathtaking in its sophistication, arrangement, composition and execution. After the multiple THOUSANDS of original guitar-centric instrumentals I've heard since the mid-80"s to now, personally "Air" and "Altitudes" still stand out as astounding due to Jason being in his mid-teens at the time. I've heard all the other young "phenoms" and teen guitarists over the last three decades. Yngwie Malmsteen. Blues Saraceno. Marty Friedman. They were then/are now phenomenal musicians. But TO MY EARS and in my personal opinion Jason Becker was something truly special. He still is. He is still alive decades after having received a life expectancy from ALS(at the time) of single-digit years. Watch his incredibly moving documentary "Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet" for the full story of his incredibly sad yet inspirational story. Jason truly is "one-of-a-kind."

I think it should be mentioned that despite being confined to a wheelchair, Jason is still writing and recording new music with the help of technology and his family. His legacy will live on after he's gone, but he's not gone yet and he still has a lot to say!

I remember the day my cousin who gave me guitar lessons lent me perpetual burn to discover Jason Becker. It blew my mind ! Bigger impact than EVH and YJM a few month before. It sure was from another planet in comparison with Metallica that i was so into at that period. Jason had everything : technique, sens of melody, genius songwritting abilities ... And he also had the will to evolve as a musician. The only one that reminds me Jason in the current days is Guthrie Govan. So YES : it's the best shred song ever ! BTW maybe my memory is tricking me but i'm quiet sure to remember an interview of Jason or Marty saying that they reached that sound playing BOSS OD pedals ... SICK !
I'm hoping the best for "Guitar Lord Becker." Wouldn't it be something if new technology could at least return a small portion of his physical ability? One can dream.
Via, malmsteen, marty and even randy rhodes. Jason becker was doing things on guitar that no one in that era could dream of. Jason is and was amazing! He was unmatched in ability. For some reason, God touched that man's hands with gifts and also decided to take it away. I have no doubt that God still loves Jason and is blessing his life with meaning. The dude is beyond amazing. No one ever could hang with Jason. Malmsteen crys in his bedroom screaming that he doesn't eat doughnuts after listening to Becker.
I think the lead track is probably harder and a more technically difficult piece to play. There are loads of covers out there but few that sound great, even Lady Nita Strauss struggled to learn it. All that being said there are few, very few that have had the virtuosity of Jason Becker at the age he had it and who knows just where he'd have ended up. Every track on this album is insane when you consider just how young he was. He also took lessons from Lord Friedman who is attributed as saying he was incredibly difficult to teach because he would return to lessons being able to play whatever he had been shown faster and cleaner than Lord Friedman could. I can highly encourage everyone to buy his DVD, Not Dead Yet, and give it a watch, but please don't scalp it as each sale helps pay for Jason's on-going care
But first Niccolo will need to take a few lessons from Mr. Roman Kim to get updated on progress made with violin technique in 2000s. Roman Kim plays 3-5 voices simultaneously on violin. Check his Beethoven's 5th Symphony violin 'solo' cover.

Growing up I was majorly influenced by Metallica I have to admit. Some would even say I sound like Kirk Hammett when I play. Lol But cacophony was an absolute inspiration to me. Hell, it’s why I learned to sweep pick in the first place.
Yes Jason what a progeny. Why did he contact ALS ? That’s one of the questions I’ll ask the big G if there is a big G to ask. In 20 years he climbed to the mountain top. I could practice 20 lifetimes and not even come close
Alex Masi DFWM is like an eruption. He has some great stuff..Becker started on acoustic and learned lots of Bob Dylan when he was like 9. His parents was his secret weapon and their encouragement allowed his musical excellence. Plus he was disciplined from his Triumphant heart. 🪔💌📫🎸🧏🕊️

I think it should be mentioned that despite being confined to a wheelchair, Jason is still writing and recording new music with the help of technology and his family. His legacy will live on after he's gone, but he's not gone yet and he still has a lot to say!

I remember the day my cousin who gave me guitar lessons lent me perpetual burn to discover Jason Becker.
It blew my mind !

It sure was from another planet in comparison with Metallica that i was so into at that period.
Jason had everything : technique, sens of melody, genius songwritting abilities ...
And he also had the will to evolve as a musician.
The only one that reminds me Jason in the current days is Guthrie Govan.
So YES : it's the best shred song ever !
BTW maybe my memory is tricking me but i'm quiet sure to remember an interview of Jason or Marty saying that they reached that sound playing BOSS OD pedals ... SICK !

Via, malmsteen, marty and even randy rhodes. Jason becker was doing things on guitar that no one in that era could dream of. Jason is and was amazing! He was unmatched in ability. For some reason, God touched that man's hands with gifts and also decided to take it away. I have no doubt that God still loves Jason and is blessing his life with meaning. The dude is beyond amazing. No one ever could hang with Jason. Malmsteen crys in his bedroom screaming that he doesn't eat doughnuts after listening to Becker.
I think the lead track is probably harder and a more technically difficult piece to play. There are loads of covers out there but few that sound great, even Lady Nita Strauss struggled to learn it. All that being said there are few, very few that have had the virtuosity of Jason Becker at the age he had it and who knows just where he'd have ended up. Every track on this album is insane when you consider just how young he was. He also took lessons from Lord Friedman who is attributed as saying he was incredibly difficult to teach because he would return to lessons being able to play whatever he had been shown faster and cleaner than Lord Friedman could.
I can highly encourage everyone to buy his DVD, Not Dead Yet, and give it a watch, but please don't scalp it as each sale helps pay for Jason's on-going care

Growing up I was majorly influenced by Metallica I have to admit. Some would even say I sound like Kirk Hammett when I play. Lol
But cacophony was an absolute inspiration to me. Hell, it’s why I learned to sweep pick in the first place.

Alex Masi DFWM is like an eruption. He has some great stuff..Becker started on acoustic and learned lots of Bob Dylan when he was like 9. His parents was his secret weapon and their encouragement allowed his musical excellence. Plus he was disciplined from his Triumphant heart. 🪔💌📫🎸🧏🕊️
