- Camping in Botswana
As we enter the Nxai Pan National Park, on our way to South Camp, the first rains arrive properly. By the time we reach South Camp, it's pretty flooded all over. Luckily for us, we prebooked/requested a specific site (number 8) and it stands us in good stead, as it's one of the few sites not underwater. No shade but we don't mind too much in this case, as many other campers are forced to vacate their sites to camp along the road and wherever they can find dry-ish spots.
There is no Plan B for flooding of sites, so they have to make do as far as is possible. Other than that, camping at South Camp is all good. We have to build a bit of an extra level in our firepit as it's flooded with water, and precariously balance our campfire on there, but we manage just fine in the end. Make-shift rain and sun awning in place, and we're all set.
Too bad we won't see many animals, as they can now find water wherever they may roam. We have a regular jackal visitor in camp though.

I'm hoping to go there in February, so I will bring a snorkel for my tent.
Might be a good idea 😄😄😄
Hi my friends
In two weeks time we start our adventure and somewhere in October we will be in Nxai Pan but site No 10😉
See you on the roads👋
I think October will be a good time to be there!
What is the cost to camp?
South Camp fees we paid for 2 nights at SADC rates:
- Camping fees: USD86
- Foreign vehicle entry fee: P525 for both Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pans NP combined.
- Conservation and other fees: P380 per day for both of us.
Fees are a bit complicated to work out. They only sent totals for the national parks' fee aspects (i.e. not camping fees, all other fees).
Can one Google Camping & Park Entry Fees or is that Info restricted ……?
It's difficult to get hold of the Botswana booking process and fees. You have to contact the relevant concession management and figure it out. Contact details are in the campsite reviews.
Dry season (& hot) is July, Aug, Sept, & Oct ……. ?
Dry season from about April to October. Can get quite hot in the latter months of the dry season.
