  • Toneq Guitar No. 2, constructed by engineer Nils Fog Gjersøe.The Construction features a approx.1-2 mm thick spruce soundboard, which is balsa tree lattice braced with carbon fibre string reinforcement below and on top of the stiffeners. The carbon fibres, also used on the soundring, are laminated some places with standard hide glue some places with epoxy resin. Plywood sound ring construction inside the body provides amplification and and sustain to the soundboard movements. The guitar neck can be removed by two set srews and also the neck angle can be adjusted. The sides and back are mango tree, the neck is mahogany. Coating is epoxy all over. Music on the video are extracts from Bach´s Chaconne and from fuga BWV 998 and a slight bit of Villa Lobos as well, all played on the instrument by the builder himself.

    I truly appreciate this video, it gives a great hint for a lattice guitar construction.
    One think that isn't clear is that I can't figure the "glue points" between the wood support and the soundboard. I see that you have a traversal bar in the middle, beneath the ring - is that glued to the soundboard as well?

      Alberto, Thank you for that, yes the sound board is glued to the transverse and all front part of soundboard is not directly part of the moving top . However, glue points are very narrow all the way around the rim for the moving part of the top - this makes for more flexibility of the top to move and better sound.

    What's the superstructure under the doubletop made of? It looks like MDF

      Thank you for your comment, much appreciated. The aim is to develop a modern instrument with a balanced and equal tonality over the full range as well as improve sustain and volume for polyphonic solo playing and for relaxed ensemble playing with more loud instruments - considering classical and jazz primarily. The guitar is a step on that route, others did similar for the piano many hundred years ago....but some conservatism has to be negotiated, when it comes to the guitar :).
      There is a successor to the featured instrument available, finished in 2019, implementing a range of quite new construction principles, a simple sound sample for that instrument can be heard on:

    This guitar will weigh tons. Lifting this guitar is like lifting a chair. Can you imagine resting a chair on your thigh? It will be a lot lighter if the frame is made from aluminium.

      Thank you for your nice comments. Metallic materials can not be used as general construction material in guitar building due to the poor acoustic properties. The increased weight of the guitar is intended, because fixation of the sound board along the rim provides highly increased sustain and better tone separation. Ideal for polyphonic music playing. However, a newer design Toneq 3 with more optimised weight is reported on my Utube channel as well, please have a look. Furthermore, a new long scale (660 mm) instrument is on its way combining modern guitar construction with modified Ramirez style bracing...planned to be reported here when finished and tested :)

    How thick are the top, bottom and side woods?

      The top is 2-3 mm, the sides and bottom are only slightly thinned

    What is the final weight of the guitar?

    • @nilsfoggjersoe
      @nilsfoggjersoe  4 роки тому

      The weight of the guitar is around 6 kg. There is a successor to this guitar build in 2019 and reported on Utube/video. The new guitar is somewhat lighter and has a hybrid bracing system, furthermore includes features from the bowed string instruments as well as completely new double bridge concept to enhance the neck vibrations, see ua-cam.com/video/AOT14nar4wA/v-deo.html

    Not a very good way to glue up the back pieces either. They'll crack in ten or so years I'd bet. Such a waste of time, materials and effort. Jerry Rosa would think someone lost his mind on that heavy piece of junk.
