- Another special live service at the start of he 1st Gulf War, again presented by Colin Morris. The choir and congregation sing "Thy Hand Oh God Has Guided" with choir only for the second verse.
This is just so wonderful within Christendom, to see David Shephard,
Derek Warlock and John Newton, together, as they always were, uniting our churches in praise of God. May we please and truly rekindle this in the name of Christ, our Risen Lord.
The beauty of creation and the joy of human recitals.
God is great.
Thanks for sharing.
Welldone and God bless †
I LOVE that last line of each verse: One Church, One Faith, One Lord :)
This was one of my favourite hymns when I was a chorister!
A great hymn which is not as popular as a lot of others are,but its great to hear it once again. Great Organ accompliment with this great rendition.
Indeed... as the info says, it was a service at the time of the start of the first Gulf War (1990)
2007 is when the clip was uploaded to UA-cam.
An aecumencal hymn sung in the yearning for Christian unity one day.
Thanks. Changed it now. And thanks for all the great vids you've been alerting me to.
Takes me back to being a choirboy
David Cope I agree, u can still sing in the choir, i'm back after 30 years, and still loves every moment of it
The choirboy who swung his hair at 2:45 is cute. The video reminds me of my visit to this Cathedral in 2015 with my friend from Manchester.
They have been changed in several hymnals, and to me it makes the meaning more clear and relevant. It is true that care must be taken not to distort the meaning.
It is in the A&M. I'm in New Zealand. If you have one of those, if not, I have three!
I thought for a moment it said Liverpool FC Cathedral... that's nice, I thought...."you'll nevaaaa waaaalk alooone"
The only thing with changing words of hymns is, if you're not careful, the meaning of the hymn is lost.
how could it not be in any hymnbooks over there? Its in basically all in england
It is in the Seventh-day Adventist hymnal #351
it's in the new english hymnal
i don't know what number it is, i will find ut for you.
I'm an american organist who had the wonderful pleasure of attending the RCM. I have one question, I can't seem to find this hymn ANYWHERE. Could one of you british chaps help me out in locating this hymn? Thanks and great choir and organ also.
Christopher Maynard, FHCO, FASC, FIGOC, FSCO This hymn can be found in the Hymns Ancient & Modern New Standard 171 or Ancient & Modern Revised 256
If you just want the tune, it's Thornbury, also sometimes used for O Jesus I have promised...
Even if the title of this clip didn't have "RC" in it, you'd know it was one of our churches because of the full-blown misinterpretation of Vatican II architecture of the cathedral.
Philacav yeah it's sad the Anglican churches look more Catholic than the Catholic ones even the newer ones like coventry cathedral
Philacav Thankfully traditional architecture is reviving with the younger generation.
@@AmericansAlwaysFree Of course many of the Anglican ones were built when England was still Catholic (although not the new Coventry)
Is that Philip Duffy conducting?
Yep =)
nanogeekpro2 Thought so..and Terry on the organ..Phillip Duffy's Wiki page does him no justice, particularly the transition between 'Woolton College' and SFX...a huge gap with nothing explained..I was in the choir mid 60's during the transition between the Crypt and the Wigwam.Plainsong!!
timmy lumsden Nice to meet you then timmy, I was the unfortunate dude at the end who got zoomed in on by the camera man who expertly placed himself between me and the conductor lol.
nanogeekpro2 I have your message but can't work out how to reply! Will have to search old laptop for original mp4 or find original VHS and retransfer (which would prob give better quality!)
nanogeekpro2 ..And to meet you too Sir...Some of the happiest days of my life
I wish a few words could be changed: instead of "Our fathers owned Thy goodness" say "Thy ancients..." then in the second verse: "They bade men rise and hasten to share the great King's feast" "and bade them rise and hasten to share Thy gracious feast" In the last verse: "and then by saints and angels" instead of "and then by men and angels". Or something similar. Then it wouldn't contain sexist language. It's a beautiful hymn, otherwise!
churchwhistles There is no need to deny the Kingship of Christ. That is a step towards denying the ordination of women but only pagans have priestesses.
Oh for God's sake!
@9pnzifpe : An archbishop who is a warlock is a contradiction in terms unless one is referring to the roman Catholic Church
In our times, these words seem to exclude our mothers and omit the invitation of women to the feast.
churchwhistles Not for anyone who studied English in school and has an appreciation of the need for music to flow.
Over 100 years ago, Pope Pius X of the "Roman Catholic" Church would NEVER have ordinarily tolerated this vernacular singing of hymns in the English language during High Mass! Neither would Pius XI nor Pius XII!!
*Canon VII:* The language proper to the Roman Church is Latin. Hence it is forbidden to sing anything whatever [yea, even congregationally or chorally sung HYMNS] in the vernacular in solemn liturgical functions - much more to sing in the vernacular the variable or common parts of the Mass and Office. - Pope Saint Pius X, _Motu Proprio (Tra le Sollecitudini),_ November 22, 1903.
*Canon IX of the Decrees of the Council of Trent:* If any man shall AFFIRM ... that the Mass ought to be celebrated in the vernacular languages only ... LET HIM BE ANATHEMA!! (Council of Trent, sess. xxii., can. 9.)
I mean no offence to the Roman Catholic Church but how are people expected to understand what is being said or being sung if it is in Latin? You can't expect people to have to learn another language just so they can learn from the gospel. It is ridiculous! I'm glad the Roman Catholic Church has moved on from always speaking in Latin during services however there are other problems which need to be addressed. I am Protestant and I pray that closer connections would be made with the Catholic and Protestant churches. GOD BLESS YOU
What the hell is this fresh mess?
